Poland's Swiatek, 22, begins her bid for a fourth French Open title in five years against French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.

She heads into the tournament in fine form, after securing back-to-back titles in Madrid and Rome this year.

Swiatek boasts an impressive French Open record, having won 28 of her 30 matches there.

She is bidding to become the first woman to win three consecutive Roland Garros titles since Justine Henin, in 2007.

Rafael Nadal returns to action at his favourite tournament on Monday - but he faces his trickiest French Open opener for many years.

The Spanish great, a record 14-time champion at Roland Garros, faces fourth seed Alexander Zverev.

Given his success at Roland Garros, tournament organisers are keen to mark his final appearance.

It had seemed like this would be the 37-year-old's final French Open appearance but he said earlier this week he would not "close the door" on extending his career.

Consequently, a planned farewell ceremony has been scrapped by tournament organisers.

In the men's singles, Carlos Alcaraz said his injured forearm is getting "better and better" after claiming a dominant first-round French Open win over J.J. Wolf.

The 21-year-old pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters in April with a muscle strain and arrived in Paris without much match practice.

However he dropped just four games in an 6-1 6-2 6-1 dispatching of American lucky loser Wolf.

Elsewhere, sixth seed Andrey Rublev came through a tough test against Taro Daniel, while French number one and 17th seed Ugo Humbert lost 6-4 2-6 6-4 6-3 to Lorenzo Sonego of Italy.

Poland's eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz went the distance in his match against Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki, eventually winning 4-6 6-3 3-6 6-0 6-3, while Bulgarian 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov defeated American Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets.

In the women's singles draw four-time major winner Naomi Osaka said her first-round win over Italy's Lucia Bronzetti at the French Open was "like a rollercoaster".

Japan's Osaka came through 6-1 4-6 7-5 for her first victory at Roland Garros in three years. You can read more here.

Elsewhere, Latvian ninth seed Jelena Ostapenko cruised into the second round with a 6-4 7-5 win over Romanian Jaqueline Cristian.

Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska, seeded 30th, came from a set down to beat Australian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6 6-3 6-3.

French home hope and 21st seed Caroline Garcia fought back from a set down to survive a scare against German qualifier Eva Lys, winning 4-6 7-5 6-2, while Ukrainian 18th seed Marta Kostyuk also came back to beat Brazilian qualifer Laura Pigossi 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-4.

But Russian 29th seed Veronika Kudermetova became the first seed to fall with a 6-2 6-4 loss to Czech Marie Bouzkova.

Let's remember this is Murray who had torn ankle ligaments a couple of months ago and only recently returned to a surface that was never his favourite anyway... So maybe let's not write off his whole career on this one game shall we?

"I love to work in front of a crowd like this. I've shared a lot of emotion with this crowd and they gave me a lot of energy to fight. In my head I'm still a young guy, still a kid."
