Escape from Ukraine: Brendan Murphy on how his home turned into a warzone, and how he escaped
Over 3,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022
Today, Brendan Murphy lives in the hills above Omeath in County Louth.
But on the 24 February 2022, he was living in Irpin, a small city close to Kyiv.
He awoke to news that Russia had launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Brendan and his family got in his car and drove for Ireland, trying their best to avoid the fighting.
Russian troops reached Irpin three days later – they were driven out after a month.
Brendan has now published a book about his experience ‘War in Ukraine: An Irishman's Journey’.
He joins Ciarán Dunbar to tell his experience of how his life in Ukraine turned into the life of a civilian in a warzone.
