Job done for Ireland in Six Nations, but they can’t afford to rest on their laurels

Ireland celebrate with the Six Nations trophy after defeating Scotland at the Aviva Stadium

Well, the job got done. Certainly not in the style that had been intended, but then, Scotland came with serious intent on spoiling the party – or at least negating any notion that this would be a lap of honour – while Ireland clearly struggled with what was in front of them, and not only from the defensive shift produced by those in blue but maybe also with the weight of expectation.

But they did it and have emulated the achievements of 2014 and ‘15 by becoming back-to-back Six Nations champions; neatly enough the sixth time this has been done by Ireland since Italy came on board to make this historic tournament an even-numbered event.
