Food preparation and serving related occupations had employment of 13.2 million in May 2023, representing 8.7 percent of total U.S. employment. Fast food and counter workers (3.7 million) and waiters and waitresses (2.2 million) made up 44.6 percent of food preparation and serving related jobs. After fast food and counter workers and waiters and waitresses, the largest food preparation and serving related occupations were restaurant cooks (1.4 million), first-line supervisors of food preparation and serving workers (1.2 million), and food preparation workers (879,610).
