The event is set to culminate in an action-oriented political outcome document, reflecting a collective commitment to future initiatives.

Advocating for fairness in global relations

During a poignant address at the reception, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed gratitude to the hosts and underscored the critical need for resilience and prosperity in small island developing states.

He emphasized the importance of fairness in international economic and financial relations, pointing out the disproportionate impact of climate change on these regions, despite their minimal contribution to the phenomenon.

The irony of economic classifications

Guterres highlighted the paradox faced by many islands, which have transformed their natural beauty into thriving tourism hubs, only to be classified as middle-income countries.

This classification restricts their access to concessional funding and debt relief, despite being among the most affected by climate change and global economic shifts, such as those spurred by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A call to action for justice and sustainability

The conference is not just a platform for acknowledging the struggles and resilience of SIDS but also serves as a critical call to action.

Guterres urged for a revision of international rules to better support the realities of SIDS, advocating for a system that ensures both resilience and prosperity through justice in climate policy, finance, and economic systems.
