In 1896, the first college basketball game was played. Now, 127 years later, March Madness 2023 draws 68 men’s and 68 women’s teams from more than 350 NCAA Division 1 basketball colleges.
This year, 26 schools have double madness as both their men’s and women’s teams were selected.
The state with the most men’s teams this year? Texas with seven: Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-CC and Texas Southern.
Explore these college towns through Census Bureau profiles that provide not just population counts but social, demographic and economic data.
Here’s a handy data-finding tip for all D1 basketball college towns: locate each school’s home city and state on this list and check out their profiles at data.census.gov/profile.
Select and play in each region. In the first game, find the men’s team in the place with the largest local population. In the second game, find the women's teams. You can play as many games as you like. Can you reach the perfect score of 63?
