In July 2021, police visited his San Antonio home and were told by his father and stepmother that Benji caused the injuries himself, though he was filmed repeatedly asking for food. Benji, who was locked in his room and deprived of food, weighed only 28 pounds at the time of his death. His father faces trial, while his stepmother was already sentenced to 25 years for child abuse. Authorities are also facing scrutiny for not intervening in time.
