Relaying the government’s anxiety in the wake of the wildfire that struck Attica last week, a high-ranking official stressed, “The fire season is not yet over and conditions remain extremely difficult due to the particularly hot summer and prolonged drought.”

A wildfire broke out on Saturday afternoon on the Eastern Aegean island complex of Fourni, the fire service said. The blaze is burning low vegetation in the Kamari area of the Fourni Korseon municipality, on the main island.

Firefighters on Evia are battling two forest wildfires. Shortly before 8 a.m. fire was noticed in the central Mesochoria area, while another fire broke out in nearby Zarakes about half an hour later.

A number of regions in the country have been designated as having a very high risk of fire (Category 4) on Saturday, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

The platform where people who incurred damages from this week’s Attica wildfire can apply for compensation will open on August 21, according to Deputy Civil Protection Minister Christos Triandopoulos. Inspections in the affected municipalities are ongoing, with 130 having been conducted by Thursday.
