An Essex primary school that was previously told to improve has now been rated "good" with "outstanding" aspects by a watchdog. Ofsted paid a visit to North Crescent Primary School in Wickford last month to assess the provisions, following a previous inspector two years ago.
The 2022 inspection rated the school as "requires improvement" overall, with some good aspects. But now Ofsted said the school has improved in all areas with an overall "good" rating, with inspectors deeming the early years provision and personal development of pupils as outstanding.
Inspectors noted pupils at the school to be “happy and safe”, “caring for others” and “motivated and resilient learners”, adding that they “follow the school’s values of being ethical, altruistic and caring”. Pupils were also found to be "proud of their leadership roles” and “strive for rewards that directly benefit others”.

It was reported that "the school caters exceptionally well for pupils’ personal development". The report continued that the staff are proud to work at the school and that they “feel well supported in managing their workload” and "they value leaders’ support for their professional development, advice and encouragement".
The inspectors said: "Pupils are happy and safe here. They make valuable contributions to their community, including visiting a care home to entertain the residents and supporting local charities. Pupils follow the school’s values of being ‘ethical, altruistic and pioneering’. They warmly and knowledgeably celebrate different cultures. For example, they learn about Gypsy, Roma and Traveller lifestyles."
They added: "Pupils love learning outdoors. They cook on campfires and build woodland shelters. This develops pupils’ confidence and team-building skills. Pupils understand the importance of mutual respect and helping everyone in the community. Discussing the weekly news and reflecting on assemblies helps embed this learning."
Following the report, headteacher Sharon Walker said, “Whilst we celebrate being the only Wickford primary school to have an “outstanding” Early Years provision, our team remains committed to striving for excellence in everything we do. We are dedicated to providing the best possible education that ‘Nurtures Brilliance, Guides Exploration and Cultivates Respect’."
In a letter to parents, she added: "On behalf of North Crescent Primary School and Schools For Every Child, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your continued support and partnership in your child's learning journey."
