ASK THE EXPERTS

How should I play the 30-yard bunker shot?

By GM Top 50 Coach Murray Patterson

The longer greenside bunker shot is renowned for being one of the toughest in golf. A common fault I see is club golfers automatically reaching for a sand or lob wedgeget over most lips and it will be much easier to control the distance and spin. Take a nice, wide stance with the weight favouring your lead side, set up with the ball position just forward of centre and use your normal bunker swing. Experiment with your club selection – the lower the loft, the further the ball should travel.
