They’re here, there, they’re everywhere — those little rectangular boxes by the side of the road called Dollar General stores.

In fact, according to the Tennessee-based company, there were 19,643 of them spread across the U.S. as of this past January. There’s at least one more now, thanks to the new one on the western edge of Hedgesville, between Murphy’s gas station and the post office.

The Dollar General closest to us is not open half the time because they can’t get help.

OOPS! Must be hungry. It was summer work. Chopping weeds out of a cotton field.

Living in very small communities in Texas meant we had to time our catalog purchases carefully. If I wanted a new camera for the family reunion (around the 4th of July) I had to earn enough money in my supper work to pay and order it early enough to arrive on tie. likely I got the camera after the reunion or (one year) it arrived in the mail the day we left to go to the reunion in Oklahoma. And I used it the next year. Still have the pictures. One shot shows my cousins and uncles lined up to photograph me. And my camera.

Loved the roadside sign -"Last Dollar General for a quarter mile."

There's also over 8,000 Dollar Trees... and over 12,000 Seven Elevens.

They used to be gas stations on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. How times have changed.
