Oscar Experts predict ‘Maestro’ will win Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and they say the trophy will go to “Maestro” (Kazu Hiro, Kay Georgiou & Lori McCoy-Bell). The other four Academy Award nominees are “Poor Things” (Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier & Josh Weston), “Oppenheimer” (Luisa Abel), “Society of the Snow” (Ana López-Puigcerver, David Martí & Montse Ribé) and “Golda” (Karen Hartley Thomas, Suzi Battersby & Ashra Kelly-Blue).

As of this writing, a leading 23 out of our 27 Oscar Experts predict a victory for “Oppenheimer”: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kevin Polowy (CBR), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Peter Travers (ABC), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Scott Mantz (KTLA-TV), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).

“Maestro” recently dominated the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards by winning two trophies for period/character makeup and for special makeup effects. The film is notable for physically turning actor/writer/producer/director Bradley Cooper into American composer Leonard Bernstein, complete with a much larger nose. Four other Oscarologists — Erik Davis (Fandango), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Tariq Khan (Gold Derby) — instead believe “Poor Things” will prevail. The Victorian-era dark comedy won this race at the BAFTA Awards thanks to transforming Emma Stone into Bella Baxter, an adult woman with the brain of a child, and Willem Dafoe into the physically deformed Dr. Godwin Baxter.

Currently at Gold Derby, none of the Experts are predicting a win for the other three Best Makeup and Hairstyling nominees: “Oppenheimer,” “Society of the Snow” and “Golda.” However, many of our awards pundits will continue to update their Oscar predictions between now and Sunday night, so keep checking back.
