This book falls logically in two parts: the rise of Harold Holt to be Prime Minister of Australia in 1966, and then his short term in office until his death in 1967. In the first part, the author charts what seems like an almost effortless rise through the political ranks. Little explanation of Holts success is given other than his affability and hard work. The second half of the book is more interesting - there is more activity, more drama and political infighting and the weakness of Holt become more apparent. He is unwilling to impose discipline on his party, and his lack of a clear aim for his government becomes obvious. The author does bring out the fact that Holt foresee the rise and Asia and worked hard to make sure Australia was prepared.
