Alexandria THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy are on a list of "thrillers"?
Seems misplaced, to say the least.
Alexandria Constantinova Szeman

message 2: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis I think the subtext justifies it. However, we have the individual books, as well as the Rings trilogy separate from The Hobbit, as well as all 4 books lumped into one. I went with the last, because that way I got more votes, but if others can agree on which way to represent Tolkien in a uniform way, I will knock some off my list in order to conform to theirs. I would just like to see some consistency. It also misrepresents the votes when we all vote in separate ways, because it dilutes the vote count. Those of you who voted for Tolkien...which of the 3 options do you like? And the creator of the list ought to weigh in, and if they are still among us, maybe do the zapping. I have librarian privileges, but did not start the list.

message 3: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis The two that seem a little out of place to me, are the Mitch Albom books, but once again, if the person who added them (and I loved them both, by the way; I only question the category) feels they, too, meet the subtext, than we have to let that stand. I understand Tuesdays With Morrie, in that Morrie said death would be a great adventure (paraphrasing Peter Pan in JM.. Barrie's classic), but I have a hard time seeing it as THIS kind of an adventure. Five People...? This was a deeply moving story, and it held my attention; I didn't regard it as a thriller. Maybe those of a religious bent feel otherwise.

Grada (BoekenTrol) The books I have voted for are all nrs. 1, if you ask me. Hard to choose which one will be my all time favorite....

Jaclyn Harrison How are there books on here with more votes than ratings? For example, #5 The Pyramid Legacy. There are several books in the Top 15 that have hardly any ratings.

Donna Davis Jaclyn wrote: "How are there books on here with more votes than ratings? For example, #5 The Pyramid Legacy. There are several books in the Top 15 that have hardly any ratings."
When you vote for your favorite book, it is scored as 100 points. Your second favorite is 99, and so on till you max out at your 100th book. I don't see anything here that looks suspicious; take the number of voters, multiply that number x100, and if the result is larger than the number that comes up, then it is suspicious. I don't see anywhere where that is the case.

It does seem to me that a lot of readers are suggestible. For example, the book in the #1 slot right now had to get the #1 or #2 rating from a lot of people, so the first 50 books or so tend to stay right up near the top because a lot of readers won't flip through all of the pages to see what else is there later, or take the time to add books that aren't on the list.

Thank you for your response, Donna. I was referring to the number of people that voted for the book, though, not the score it received. For this list, 120 people voted for The Pyramid Legacy; however, only 108 people actually read and rated the book.

Donna Davis Hunter S. wrote: "Can a Librarian remove my book, September Ends, please? It isn't a thriller. Thank you very much!"
I ran a scan and removed 5 duplicates but could not find your title. Has it been removed already? If not, please let me know what page number it's on. This is a mighty long list, and I may have missed it.

message 11: by Hunter (new)

Hunter Jones Hi Donna, thank you for the reply. I'm seeing September Ends at # 380. Not a threat to the actual books which are thrillers, but the list does show on my book's page, which will mislead readers. Thank you for anything you can do. All the best!

Thank you for pointing it out. It is gone, along with Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven (a favorite of mine, and a page-turner, but surely not a thriller).

Ryan Donna wrote: "It seems like such a pointless form of fraud."

I tend to think the best of people. I can see how someone would scan a list and go "Oh yeah, I read that," and vote for it even though they haven't taken the time to add it to their own shelves or rate it.

Where are Karen Rose books?

message 15: by Subha Prasad (new)

Subha Prasad Six idiots think that Watership Down is a thriller.

message 16: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis The Red Velvet Rose wrote: "Where are Karen Rose books?"
Velvet, if you want books added, you have to do it yourself. At the top of the page are two tabs. The one on the right says "add books to this list". Hit the tab. A window will pop up. Enter the title. When it comes up, enter and then click "vote for this book". You can do this with up to 100 books, since that is the number of votes you get.

Librarians do not add books unless we add those we wish to vote for.

message 17: by Rosemary (last edited Jun 10, 2015 10:26AM) (new)

Rosemary Lombard I just added my edition of COYOTE WILLOWS to the list--a terrific eco-thriller just out, an important book that's a page-turner, too. I'm new here but am excited to introduce it to other readers. Some components of this well-written, complexly plotted, knowledgeable book: radioactive storage, leakage, government issues at Hanford nuclear plant; the threatened Columbia River; eastern Oregon ranch country, Willamette Falls; Native American rock art; main character with post-traumatic stress; lots of action. Search it by title, not author--incomplete information there.

Coyote Willows

No problem, Donna. I can see how saying "my edition" would be confusing. Goodreads is separating the paperbacks from the e-books. Mine is the bound version, a sizable and handsome book.

message 23: by Steve (new)

Steve Some of the books listed do not belong here. it would be nice to see the creator of this list to an edit.

message 24: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis Steve wrote: "Some of the books listed do not belong here. it would be nice to see the creator of this list to an edit."

If you see books that are of a different genre, please tell us the titles and the pages on which they are found. Volunteer librarians like me can go in an remove them, but with a list this long, it could take hours to go over every title. If we know which titles and what they are, it can be done in a matter of minutes.

Please note that we cannot remove titles simply as a matter of taste; there are strict guidelines set by Goodreads, and the list is intended to be democratic. But any that are simply on the wrong list can be zapped.

message 25: by Diane (new)

Diane Why are the The Lord of the Rings, The Clan of the Cave Bear, The Mammoth Hunters and The Red Tent on here? Just because a book has action or tension doesn't make it a thriller.

message 26: by Diane (new)

Diane I forgot to mention Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Animal Farm. Seriously?

message 27: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis Diane wrote: "I forgot to mention Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Animal Farm. Seriously?"

I will be happy to find them and zap them if you give me page numbers. I don't have time to wade through 21 pages to search for them, and these open-ended listopias are largely edited by volunteers like me.

If you think you might qualify, you could also apply to be a librarian.

message 28: by Diane (last edited Oct 26, 2015 08:49PM) (new)

Diane I went through the list and made a list of my own. I need to put it in a little more manageable form. I just included books that I have read and am familiar with. I left the dystopian novels like 1984 and The Hunger Games Trilogy. I think some people are thinking thriller = adventure, so they're adding fantasy epics like Tolkien and Jordan. I don't quite understand the reason behind the Jane Austen, James Harriot, and Louisa May Alcott books, though. Then there's the history book on Thomas Jefferson. Weird, to say the least.

Obviously some don't belong. Happy to assist if needed.

Diane I have a typed Word list. It's in Courier, 11 pt. Two full pages and a handful on page three. How do you want it?

message 31: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis If you have included the page numbers, you can cut and paste it here. Again, I am a volunteer, and so to do this, I do want page numbers for each of the titles. I can get it done in an hour or two if I know where each is listed.

Good gravy! Some of these are perched on the ragged edge, and Goodreads is very strict about what we can and cannot remove, but there are a large number of titles here that are clearly, obviously on the wrong list. Got my sleeves rolled up, and here we go.

That completes my evening's work of cleaning up Diane's prodigiously documented list (thank you, Diane). I will be back tomorrow to work on the next sections. Did not find Jules Verne. I wimped out on the Tolkien titles and Watership Down, because there is sort of a tradition that once a title garners a large enough number of votes, the people have spoken and we have to live with it.

I will get through section 2 tomorrow, probably section 3, and possibly section 4.

More to come.

Diane I was very careful about what I listed. Anything borderline, anything I wasn't sure about, anything that just might be considered a "thriller," I left it on. However, epic fantasy (Jordan & Feist), memoirs (Jeannette Walls), history (the Thomas Jefferson book), Louisa May Alcott, James Herriot, etc., just don't make sense to me. "Mrs Mike" is historical fiction (based on a true story). I've read it and it's definitely not a thriller.

Memoirs and other nonfiction are coming down. I'm working on it. There are some titles that are listed by a lot of users as "adventure" and so there may be some crossover there. Ultimately, if a book is removed and Goodreads/amazon doesn't like it, it is my membership on the line, so I am being careful, but don't worry, I am a long way from being done here. Probably will finish section 1 tonight, then come back tomorrow.

I searched for the Thomas Jefferson title on pp 10-13 and could not find it. Perhaps another librarian knocked it off the list before I got there. You are certainly correct that a lot of titles have been misplaced on this list. I imagine tired people got online, their brains half-numbed from the day's activity, and someone confused "thrillers" with "books that thrill me", which is sort of...everything.

The one book on your section 2 list that I would defend as being at least partially a thriller is Hawaii. Someone who isn't me will have to remove it, or else it stays. Huge numbers of James Herriot memoirs made their way onto this list, which is just nuts.
I meant to go one organized section at a time, but in actuality I got most of section 2 and bits and pieces of sections 3 and 4, just looking for Herriot and Feist in large measure. I will be back to do more either tonight or tomorrow.

Thank you for all your work. I really do appreciate it. I'm sorry I made so much work for you. I don't normally react to lists like this. However, the mystery/thriller genre is my favorite, and it annoys me to see so many obviously wrong books added to this list. What really amazed me were "Little Women," "Pride and Prejudice," and the James Herriot books. I agree that people are adding books that they found "thrilling," not necessarily books that are "thrillers."

No problem. The specific reason I volunteered to be a Goodreads librarian is because it sticks in my craw when I see things that so obviously don't belong in a listopia. I am a retired English teacher, so they decided I would do.

I will be back for one more go at it tomorrow. Thanks for all your work listing the titles and page numbers.

I have no idea what relationship the thriller genre has to paranormal and vampire stuff, especially when they are mixed with erotica. I will leave those titles for others to consider. Moving on:

The Eye of the World, Sci Fi/Fantasy
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
The Dragon Reborn, Sci Fi/Fantasy
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
The Great Hunt, Sci Fi/Fantasy

Eragon, Fantasy/Magic

Towers of Midnight, Sci Fi/Fantasy
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...

Diane, there were a couple of titles on your list (Sybil was one of them) that were no longer there when I looked. Whoever else has been tidying this list, thank you, thank you. The list is clean, or at least it is a whole lot cleaner. Goodnight, all.

Deborah Starling Fantastic list! I have added a couple of these to my TBR list this winter!! When it's dark and gloomy outside I love to have a dark and suspenseful book! They seem to complement each other well. I have a book recommendation that must be added to a future thriller list by author R. Breuer Stearns entitled, "The Question" http://rbreuerstearns.com/. The book focuses on a group of scientists who are exploring a new way of thinking, a method powerful enough to answer very complex questions (e.g. Is there a God? Why are we here?) There are a lot of organizations out there who do not want these questions answered and will do what's necessary to put a stop to it. This book is written so well that it almost feels like it something that can really happen in today's day and age (or is happening for all we know!). This novel really has it all and will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Dipanshi Um please correct me if I am wrong, but should the Hunger Games series be counted as a thriller? It is a wonderful series no doubt, but it doesn't seem to conform to the genre.. It is a dystopian fantasy I think, certainly doesn't seem to be of the same tone as the Langdon series posted here or any of Harlan Coben works.

You may be correct, and there are 3 other titles on the first page--two of Stephen King's horror novels and The Hobbit, which is fantasy and nothing else, that also do not belong. However, there is a policy, maybe informal although as a volunteer I am not sure, but it's a rule that is observed: once a book makes it onto page 1 and gets more than a couple dozen votes or thereabouts, it is there to stay. So as much as I would love to lift them, I'm not going to touch them, because anyone that misuses her Goodreads librarian status can lose not only that title and privilege, but also her Goodreads membership. No listopia is worth that risk to me. That said, you can try taking it to the super-librarians and see what they have to say, but I don't think you'll get anywhere with it.

I suspect a number of readers interpret the genre "thriller" as any-book-that-really-thrilled-me. No, no, and no. So we mop up as best we can, and then some books that have snuck in are too secure to budge.

Donna Davis It's clean up time. If in doubt, please read the tags at the bottom of the list. Nonfiction does not qualify as a thriller; titles that belong to a different genre but are very exciting are also unlikely to be thrillers. Here we go.

From #212, To Kill a Mockingbird:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

#120, 1984 by George Orwell
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

Also from page 2, Water for Elephants
:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Years ago the topic of LOTR titles on this list came up, and I was a total marshmallow and said we should leave it alone. What was wrong with me? I checked and out of thousands of raters and reviewers, zero people shelved any LOTR title as mystery, thriller, or spy fiction. The one at the top of the list is too entrenched for me to feel confident zapping it now, but the rest are leaving, because they are fantasy, adventure, and classics, but they are absolutely not thrillers, no matter how much they thrill us. From page 2, The Two Towers:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Also from page 2, The Return of the King:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Page 2 The Help, shelved as historical fiction and as adult fiction:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Page 2 Clan of the Cave Bear, historical fiction:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

From #174, Interview with a Vampire, listed as horror and paranormal, but not as thriller by anyone at all:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Watership Down, from p.3, fantasy, classics, and (ahem) animal stories (!)...but not thrillers:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...

The system found and eliminated 17 duplicates.
