David Lynch’s career as a renowned filmmaker, screenwriter, and artist is distinguished by his unique style, delving deeply into the human psyche with captivating, dreamlike visuals. As an auteur, he masterfully fuses experimental film techniques, blending unconventional horror and avant-garde cinema with box office profits.
Before making his first experimental shorts he studied painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the sixties. His foray into film began with a one-minute short he created for a contest in Philadelphia that led him to the American Film Institute, where he made The Grandmother (1970) and started working on the indie cult classic, Eraserhead (1976).
Lynch went mainstream with The Elephant Man (1980) and ventured into science fiction with Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s novel and starring Kyle MacLachlan. Lynch would continue to collaborate with MacLachlan in future projects, including his next art house project,...

David Lynch has taken to X to clarify his comments in a recent interview about his battle with emphysema and isolation for fear of Covid.
“Ladies and Gentlemen,” Lynch writes, “Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking. I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco – the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them – but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema. I have now quit smoking for over two years. Recently I had many tests and the good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema. I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire. I want you all to know that I really appreciate your concern. Love, David”

She wore bluuueeeee velvettttt – but she didn’t wear a cap and gown along with it. Laura Dern spent a whopping two days at UCLA before dropping out to play Sandy Williams in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. Just imagine how much Pabst Blue Ribbon she missed out on in the dorm!
Appearing on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Laura Dern remembered being excited to land the part in Blue Velvet but running into issues with the university, who rebuked her request to take time off to work on the film. Dern insisted she would do all the required work, which the department head was reluctant to approve. “I said, ‘I have this opportunity and he said, ‘Well, I’ll look at the script if you want to give me the script, but, you know, you’re not going to get a leave of absence. It’s not going to happen.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph has already had a great 2024. The performer won an Oscar on her first nomination — taking home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Alexander Payne‘s “The Holdovers.” However, her year just got even better with an Emmy nomination on the cards for her guest role in Hulu’s comedy series “Only Murders in the Building.” Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, the comedy series follows Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three occupants of a New York City apartment building who are drawn into solving murders due to their love of true crime. The first season was so popular that two more seasons quickly followed, along with a host of A-list actors joining the cast including Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd.

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Carol Burnett is entering the “Palm Royale” episode “Maxine Shakes the Tree” as her 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. “Maxine Shakes the Tree” aired on April 3 and is the fifth episode of the first season of the Apple TV+ series.
In this episode, Norma (Burnett) has awaken from her coma but is unable to pronounce words, engaging in conversations through lots of mumbling and groaning. Maxine interprets one of Norma’s murmurs to mean she should confront Douglas (Josh Lucas) about his past engagement to Linda (Laura Dern), so she brings Norma along in a wheelchair. A flashback reveals that Norma was the one who helped Douglas run away to Chattanooga for Maxine and ditch Linda at the altar. At the end, Linda tells Norma that it’s over and tosses her Rolodex’s contents into the fire while all Norma can do is groan.

Laura Dern may now have an Oscar, an Emmy, a BAFTA, and multiple Golden Globes, she may have even benefited from nepotism as the child of actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, but as a fresh-faced 17 year-old student at UCLA, she was largely treated like everyone else. At least for as long as she actually got to attend the school. In a recent interview with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson on their podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Dern lamented over her experience being asked to leave the prestigious university after getting cast in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet.”

Laura Dern is probably not contributing to the UCLA alumni fund anytime soon.
On a recent visit to Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” (cue the “I understood that reference” Gif), the Oscar-winning actress remembered back to her school days, when she was advised not to participate in making David Lynch’s 1986 film “Blue Velvet.” The faculty didn’t just tell her she’d be dismissed due to the absence, but she was actually insulted for considering it a worthwhile project.

“If you make this choice, you are no longer welcome at UCLA,” Laura Dern was told when she requested time off to make Blue Velvet.
Then aged 17, Laura Dern was thrilled to land a major part in David Lynch’s 1986 thriller, Blue Velvet. Unfortunately, the powers that be at her university were less impressed.
Speaking to Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson on their podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name (via Variety), Dern recounted the moment where she had to choose between her education and working with one of America’s great maverick directors. She’d only been at UCLA for two days, she recalled, when she successfully auditioned for the part of Sandy Williams – one of the film’s central characters.

At the start of her film career, Laura Dern took a big risk, quitting college to star in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet.
The Big Little Lies star recalled she learned she had landed the role of Sandy Williams in the 1986 psychological thriller two days after starting college.

At the time, Dern was studying psychology and minoring in journalism. She asked the head of the film department for a leave of absence but was denied.
Dern tried to plead her case, saying she would “write papers” and “double-up classes” when she returned, but the UCLA administrators did not waver.

Laura Dern appeared on a recent episode of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast (via People) and remembered being forced to drop out of UCLA film school after she won the role of Sandy Williams in David Lynch’s 1986 masterpiece “Blue Velvet.” While Dern had already appeared in films such as “Mask,” it was “Blue Velvet” that served as her acting breakthrough and kicked off a career-spanning collaboration with Lynch.
“I was 17, so excited to get into UCLA,” Dern said. “I was there for two days, and I had auditioned and got offered the role in ‘Blue Velvet.’”
Dern was “ecstatic” over getting the film as she “worshipped” Lynch, who was already an Oscar-nominated filmmaker at that point in his career, thanks to 1980’s “The Elephant Man.” But when Dern went to speak to the head of her college department about getting a leave...

Laura Dern gave up her college education for David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. The actress recalled this week that the University of California, Los Angeles, refused to grant her a leave of absence to film the movie, meaning she left for the project and never returned.
“I was 17, so excited to get into UCLA,” Dern said on Wednesday’s installment of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name. “I was there for two days, and I had auditioned and got offered the role in Blue Velvet.”
Dern said she was “ecstatic” at the opportunity, especially given her affinity for writer-director Lynch, but the school refused to grant her a leave of absence “for any reason.”
The Big Little Lies star said she tried will all her might to change the school’s mind. “I will write papers. I’ll come back and, double up classes,...

Back in January, Universal Pictures made a surprising announcement: not only did they have a new Jurassic World movie in development, but the screenplay – by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, returning to the franchise for the first time since The Lost World: Jurassic Park – had already been written, and the movie was on the fast track to production. Soon after, we learned that it’s aiming for a July 2, 2025 theatrical release. Assembled in a mad scramble, the movie is now filming with Godzilla director Gareth Edwards at the helm… and while a title has never been officially announced (we’ve heard that people involved with the production were referring to it as Jurassic World 4 and/or Jurassic City), the title might have just been given away by trademark filings. A few days ago, Amblin Entertainment filed to trademark the title Jurassic World: Rebirth for several products.

Besides his appearances as Nick Fury in the MCU and frequent collaborations with Quentin Tarantino, Samuel L. Jackson is also popular for getting some of the most bizarre on-screen deaths. From being blown in Django Unchained to being stabbed by a weaponized leg in Kingsman 2, and turning to dust in Avengers: Infinity War, Jackson has openly stated that he loves to die in his films.
However, when Samuel L. Jackson appeared in a minor role in Jurassic Park, his wish to get another memorable on-screen death went unfulfilled due to a unique reason, a hurricane.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

Shelley Duvall, the big-eyed, waifish performer who won the Cannes actress award for Robert Altman’s “3 Women” and endured Stanley Kubrick’s intense directing techniques to star in “The Shining,” died Thursday in Blanco, Texas, Variety confirmed with her partner Dan Gilroy. She was 75.
Duvall was known for working with director Altman, who cast her in “Brewster McCloud” as her first screen role. As Scarlett Johansson begins filming the latest installment of Universal’s enduring dino-centric action-adventure, she received a warm welcome to Jurassic World from franchise veteran Jeff Goldblum.
Johansson, who recently outed herself as a “huge nerd” for all things Jurassic Park and Jurassic World appeared on NBC’s Today on Tuesday morning to promote her new romantic comedy, Fly Me to the Moon. As the interview with host Savannah Guthrie concluded, the Avengers star was informed that “somebody wanted to welcome you aboard to the team.”
Johansson appeared slightly perplexed but that quickly turned to a delightful smile when a video of Goldblum was played on air.
“Dr Johansson, this is Jeff Goldblum,” the veteran actor, donning his trademark glasses and a dinosaur sweater, says to the camera. “Here’s what I want to say to you. This I know: Scarlett will find a way. Don’t get eaten, unless you want to.

Scarlett Johansson seems to be jumping from one franchise to another these past few years. After leaving her iconic role as the Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she moved on to star in the upcoming Transformers film, and recently, it was announced that the actress would also be starring in a reboot, a fresh story from the Jurassic World series.
The iconic dinosaur franchise has become a classic for many reasons, one of the biggest being its cast and director. With Steven Spielberg heading the series and actors like Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Chris Pratt, and Sam Neill starring in it, it is not surprising that another A-list star like Johansson would join the ship.

Her entry into the series also seems to be very welcome, as Goldblum recently publicly congratulated the actress on joining the franchise.

Wow. The power of women.
I remember Nicole Kidman's speech at the 2018 Golden Globes like it was yesterday. You certainly could sense a genuine sisterhood between the five principle stars of Big Little Lies, HBO's unexpectedly titanic, initially limited series. Amid the backdrop of #MeToo, it was quite a moment for Nicole Kidman and company.
The actress's output in the 2010s was, charitably, something of a mixed bag. For every dazzling turn in Rabbit Hole (2010), The Paperboy (2012), or Paddington (2014), there were plenty of barely released (if at all) misfires like Tresspass (2011), The Railway Man (2013), and Queen of the Desert (2015). With the notable exception of Lion (2016), things looked awfully bleak for Kidmaniacs stateside heading into a post-presidential election year...

With the notable exception of Lion (2016), things looked awfully bleak for Kidmaniacs stateside heading into a post-presidential election year...

But ahead of its release, let us take a quick look at Hugh’s last five films at the worldwide box office.
As a leading man, Hugh has reportedly appeared in about twenty-nine movies. He has been featured as Logan in seven films, excluding his cameos in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Apocalypse. Three of them are his stand-alone movies, and he retired from the role in 2017 with Logan. Besides the X-Men movies, he has also appeared in other critically acclaimed films, such as Les Miserables.

Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World trilogy came to its conclusion in 2022 with Jurassic World: Dominion. It didn’t take long for Universal to move forward with a follow-up despite the arc for those characters coming to an end. Production has just taken off and the new Jurassic World movie will be filming in Thailand through July 16th, with locations including Bangkok, Trang, Phang Nga, Phuket, Chiang Mai and the Huai To Waterfall, which is within the Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi province. Filming at the waterfall is expected to take a full week. Outside of Thailand, the movie will be filming at studios in Malta and the U.K. The writer of the two original Spielberg movies, David Koepp, returns to the series with this sequel and the star, Scarlett Johansson, couldn’t be more excited as she spoke about the project with ComicBook.com. According to Variety, the Black Widow actress said,...

Two llamas are bounding up a small hill in Ojai, drawn to the sounds of filmmaker Rebecca Tickell yelling in a high-pitched voice, “Rama! Yoda!” Tickell has in her hand a bucket full of feed, and the two shaggy, snow-colored mammals are ready to eat.
“When the chickens got to an excessive number, they started getting picked off by coyotes,” explains Rebecca’s husband and collaborator, Josh. “These guys, they probably get rid of about 60, 70 percent of the coyotes.” What about the other 30 to 40 percent? “What happens is when you run a farm, you begin the cycle of predator and prey,” Josh says. He adds, “Most people have a bucolic fairy tale [image] of what sustainability in farming looks like. And then you get into it and you realize, ‘Wow, this is really hard.’”
At their all-encompassing home, film studio and farm in Ojai, the Tickells are working to practice what they preach.

Saying Steven Spielberg is a veteran director would dishonor his legendary career as his imaginative mind has changed cinema as we know it. From creating iconic movies like Jaws and Jurassic Park to Oscar-winning films like Schindler’s List, Spielberg has had quite a filmography to his name.

Throughout his entire career, it has been noted and observed by people around him that Spielberg only does seven takes for a scene. Not furthering the number any higher, Spielberg’s shots are usually done in seven takes. However, one scene from Jurassic Park needed so much perfection that the director had to break his golden rule!

Actor Hugh Jackman is making his much-awaited return to the iconic role of Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. The Australian actor originated the role more than two decades ago and has a Hollywood career that spans even longer. During this time, Jackman has rarely been accused of being anything less than being the nicest person in Hollywood.

In an interview, co-star Kate Beckinsale spoke about the experience of working with Jackman, and praised him for his calm and kind demeanor. As a result, the nicest guy tag continued to follow Jackman throughout his career. However, the actor has himself denounced the tag and shared the perils of holding it. Here is what Beckinsale and Jackman had to say about the latter being the nicest person.

It was a surprise to many of her admiring fans that the legendary Carol Burnett was not already immortalized with her handprints in the iconic Hollywood cement. That fact finally changed on Thursday as she was surrounded by friends, co-stars and family at a brief ceremony outside of the Tcl Chinese Theater.
Before cementing herself for decades of tourists to visit, she said, “I grew up just a few blocks from here, Yucca and Wilcox. It was a block north of Hollywood Boulevard. And when I was a little girl, I can’t begin to count the times my grandmother and I would walk up her to Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Betty Grable was one of my favorites, and I remember bending down and putting my hands on her handprints, never dreaming that someday I’d be putting my hands here 80 years later.”

A galaxy far, far away keeps getting bigger and bigger thanks to Disney+ expanding the “Star Wars” franchise with several TV shows, such as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka,” to go alongside their film output. As such, “Star Wars” fans have gotten used to seeing actors from the franchise popping up at various awards shows — either for “Star Wars” projects or for other works. Giancarlo Esposito was Emmy-nominated for his villainous work in “The Mandalorian,” for example,” while last year’s Best Drama Actor Emmys lineup included Mando himself, Pedro Pascal, who was cited for “The Last of Us.” With this in mind, here are eight “Star Wars” actors who could be nominated at this year’s Emmys.

The most direct metaphor in David Lynch’s canon arrives early on in 1986’s Blue Velvet. After an opening credits sequence set against blue velvet curtains and accompanied by Angelo Badalamenti’s swooning score, Lynch offers up a montage of classic Americana, including gleaming white picket fences, a fire truck with a dog, and roses that gleam with a feverish red hue. Bobby Vinton’s version of the title song serves as the soundtrack to these images, and, with this song, Lynch signals both his yearning for and disbelief in this idyllic world—a conflict in emotions that would drive his subsequent film and television productions. In case this conflict is lost on viewers, Lynch ends his montage with a father collapsing from a malady as he waters his front yard, and the camera homes in on blades of grass, pressing further into the ground until we can see black insects festering underneath the surface.

Woody Harrelson revealed on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast that he got into a motorcycle accident while he was driving to the studio to record the interview alongside his “Cheers” co-star and longtime friend Ted Danson. Harrelson collided with a Tesla and was thrown over his handlebars and over the hood of the car. He was wearing a helmet and avoided any potential head injury.
“A tumble is a fair term. I did go over my handlebars,” Harrelson revealed on the podcast following the accident. “I was honestly and embarrassingly passing this Tesla on the left that I felt was moving a little slow and I didn’t realize he was moving slow because he was taking a left. I was on a motorcycle.”

Adria Arjona says she was destined for pop stardom. She dreamed of becoming the next Beyoncé or Britney Spears as she crisscrossed the Americas with her father, the Guatemalan singer Ricardo Arjona, watching him serenade audiences with Latin pop ballads. Her home became a hotel room. She jetted between tour dates and stood backstage cheering him on. There was only one thing missing from her supersized expectations:
“I can’t sing,” Arjona says. “So, that was not in the books for me.”
Instead, Arjona has paved her own path in Hollywood.

In Palm Royale, about a woman named Maxine (Kristen Wiig) infiltrating the wealthy elite of Palm Beach, Florida, in 1969, Laura Dern plays Linda, the local feminist of the community. In episode six, titled “Maxine Takes a Step,” Dern shares the screen with her real-life father, Bruce Dern, for the first time ever.
“It’s such an iconic moment on television, obviously, the two of them acting together,” says director Stephanie Laing. “But more than that, it signifies the journey they’re about to take in the story.”

Receiving the IndieWire Honors Vanguard Award at Citizen News on June 6, Carol Burnett reflected on her years spent as a teenage reporter. The comedy legend further praised journalists as “essential” to the entertainment industry and described the evening as a “full circle” moment in her illustrious career. (Watch her interview on our red carpet above.)
“This actually happens to be the neighborhood I grew up in just a few blocks from here,” Burnett said in her speech. “At one point, I was editor of my Hollywood High School newspaper and one of my assignments was to interview the editor of the Hollywood Citizen News. That was in this building.”
Speaking to IndieWire in May, the actress said that in addition to interviewing Citizen News editor Lowell E. Redelings — who Innovation Award winner John Mulaney would later accuse of Communism during his predictably hilarious acceptance speech — she narrowly missed a chance to speak with Lana Turner.

Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” is packed heels to highlights with legendary actresses, but Carol Burnett wants to add at least one more when they’re back for Season 2.
In an exclusive interview ahead of the 2024 IndieWire Honors — which took place on June 6 at Citizen News in Hollywood and saw the beloved comedienne winning the Vanguard Award for a lifetime of achievements in television — Burnett revealed that her old scene partner Vicki Lawrence not only watched but “loved” creator Abe Sylvia’s sparkling ‘60s satire about well-to-do Palm Beach.
“I wish they could find something for [Vicki] on the show,” said Burnett, who guest starred as the larger-than-life Norma Dellacorte in “Palm Royale” Season 1. “I’m going to ask Abe if there’s a part that might come up because that would be fun to have Vicki on. That would really be something. And not just a mercy booking. That’s not what I mean.

The project has been assembled in a mad scramble over the last five months. At one point, The Fall Guy director David Leitch was in talks to direct, but he had a different vision than Universal was looking forward, so they turned to Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. And with Edwards at the helm, the movie officially went into production today, filming in Thailand.

Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the master filmmakers currently working today. The director has been working since the 70s and is one of the most versatile filmmakers in the industry. He has dabbled in every genre of film with great conviction. His work in the sci-fi space especially has stayed in the hearts and minds of fans to this day.

The director pushed boundaries with what could be achieved in filmmaking with films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, and Jurassic Park. The latter is one of the most groundbreaking and influential films ever made. One might be surprised to know that Harrison Ford was the first choice for the role of Dr. Alan Grant, but the actor turned it down.

So, can you resist the high-energy action of Jurassic Park, a cinematic marvel that not only shaped our childhoods but also stands out as a jewel in Steven Spielberg’s illustrious filmography?
The 1993 film, based on a screenplay by Michael Crichton and David Koepp, is undeniably entertaining, with those awe-inspiring dinosaurs romping through the primordial landscapes of our imaginations. Did we forget to mention the remote, scary island of Isla Nublar?
While the film is a masterpiece that integrates innovative visual effects & gripping storytelling, there is a lesser-known tidbit that adds a layer of human intrigue to the story. Behind the scenes, Sam Neill, our beloved Dr. Alan Grant, grappled with what he described as “an actor’s nightmare”: the quest for the perfect American accent.
