Worlds might collide in London this Saturday, should the Boss meet the Bear.
As Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White warmed his voice and practiced his guitar to prepare for the Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” he initially kept a distance from his storied subject to better ease into the role.
“I’m trying to have a bit of my own process,” he told Variety in June. “I wanna try to have an understanding, so when I meet him, I’ll have a bit of confidence somewhere in me to stand there.”
That day may soon be near. Speaking from the red carpet at a glitzy, pre-Olympics bash held at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, White revealed that he and Springsteen have now “texted and emailed” and might finally meet in person after Springsteen’s show at London’s Wembley Stadium this Saturday.

Last week, Sofia Vergara made history at the Emmys as the first Latina to be nominated for best lead actress in a limited series for her role in Netflix's "Griselda." This nomination comes after years of Vergara battling a double-edged sword: her undeniable talent and her Colombian accent, which were both part of the path she'd carved with her iconic portrayal of Gloria Pritchett on "Modern Family." Despite the success that "Modern Family" had - winning 22 Primetime Emmy Awards and garnering 85 nominations since its 2009 debut - Vergara has been vocal about the limitations the industry placed on her because of her accent.
"I'm always looking for characters because there's not much that I can play with this stupid accent," she told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year. "I can't play a scientist or be in 'Schindler's List.' My acting jobs are kind of limited."

Joe Biden has made his decision, and will not seek a second term. The announcement on a sleepy July Sunday morning rocked social media.
After a Saturday that saw both Donald Trump and his running mate Sen J.D. Vance (R-oh) campaigning, as was Vice President Kamala Harris, the one-page correspondence from Biden, who has been at his Delaware home recovering from Covid, also noted that Potus intends to “speak to the nation later this week.
Biden’s decision and announcement came after weeks of revolt among party donors, supporters and congressional members that the president’s electoral chances and already shaky polls were dimming following a disastrous debate performance that raised new concerns about his age.

The Criterion Channel’s August lineup pays tribute to auteurs of all kinds: directors, actors, and photographers, fictional or otherwise. In a notable act of preservation and advocacy, they’ll stream 20 titles by the Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine, here introduced by the great Richard Peña. More known (but fun all the same) is a five-title Paul Thomas Anderson series including the exclusive stream of Licorice Pizza, as well as a Philip Seymour Hoffman series that overlaps with Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love (a Criterion Edition this month), and The Master, plus 25th Hour, Love Liza, and his own directing effort Jack Goes Boating. Preston Sturges gets five movies, with Sullivan’s Travels arriving in October.

Madonna is back at work on her biopic, as the iconic singer confirmed on social media.
Madonna shared on Instagram that she is back writing the film’s screenplay, with the feature now titled “Who’s That Girl,” a classic reference in the annals of Madonna lore. “Who’s That Girl” is also the title of James Foley’s 1987 comedy feature (which marked one of Madonna’s first movie roles and co-starred Griffin Dunne), a soundtrack single for the film, and Madonna’s world tour that same year.
“I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..Okay,” Madonna captioned, adding, “Story of my life.”

Timothée Chalamet is to star in Josh Safdie's new A24 movie 'Marty Supreme'. The US independent entertainment company - which was behind movies such as 'Uncut Gems', 'Everything Everywhere All At Once', and 'Lady Bird' - took to social media to confirm Chalamet has joined their latest project. A post on A24's X account read: "Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme starring @RealChalamet. Coming soon (sic)"According to Variety, the motion picture will take inspiration from late professional table tennis player Marty Reisman. But sources close to the movie told the publication it is a fictionalised story. Safdie, who is re-teaming with A24 after they distributed his previous films 'Uncut Gems' and 'Good Time', has penned the script alongside Ronald Bronstein. Reisman, who was known as the "wizard of table tennis", won 22 major table tennis titles from 1946 to 2002.He passed away in December 2012 aged...

With Timothée Chalamet next playing Bob Dylan, he’ll next be trading singing for ping pong slinging.
The actor, who is portraying Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” is in final negotiations to star in and produce Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” about a professional ping pong champ, A24 announced on Monday.
The movie is a fictionalized, original film written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, and official plot details are being kept under wraps.
Though as Variety is reporting, the film may be loosely inspired by the life of Marty Reisman, a ping pong champion who won 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships across his career. He also made history as the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport while competing in the United States National Hardbat Championship. He died in 2012.

More than 1,400 people have already predicted the Oscar nominations as of this writing, and as I recently wrote, the prison drama “Sing Sing” is the very early front-runner for Best Picture in our racetrack odds. But that film’s mastermind, Greg Kwedar, ranks fifth for Best Director. Instead, our early favorite for that coveted prize is Steve McQueen for “Blitz.”
“Blitz” has yet to be seen by critics or audiences, but its distributor and scheduling look mighty promising. It’s from Apple Original Films, the studio behind Best Picture winner “Coda” and Best Picture nominee “Killers of the Flower Moon.” It’s set to premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9 ahead of a theatrical premiere on November 1 and a streaming premiere on November 22, smack dab in the middle of fall when most major film awards contenders are released.
The film’s subject matter is also typically awards-friendly.

France’s Deauville American Film Festival has announced a retrospective gathering 50 U.S. features that have challenged perceptions of the world to mark its 50th anniversary.
The selection ranges from D. W. Griffith’s 1916 silent epic Intolerance to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and also includes Ida Lupino’s groundbreaking 1950 rape drama Outrage as well as Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. (see full list below)
“Cinema has always made us dream, travel, desire, fantasize, laugh, cry. But how many films have been able to shake up our certainties, question our beliefs, question our prejudices and put our own views into perspective?,” said the festival.
“The Deauville American Film Festival wanted to highlight a selection of 50 films that have changed the way we look at the world,” it continued.

Clive Owen has worked with many of the great filmmakers, from Robert Altman to Spike Lee and most notably Alfonso Cuarón in “Children of Men.” But Owen called his collaboration on “Closer” with filmmaker Mike Nichols “one of the highlights of his career.”

Clive Owen has not forgotten his roots. Growing up in a working-class family in Coventry in the 1970s U.K., he yearned to explore different roles in life — and the youth wing of the city’s civic Belgrade Theatre gave him that opportunity.
More than four decades later, Owen — who most recently appeared in “Monsieur Spade” as an aging Sam Spade drawn back into the game to solve a post-World War II murder mystery in the south of France — credits that experience as the foundation for his career.
“That is where it all started for me — joining the youth theater was a life changer for me,” he tells Variety at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he receives the President’s Award Saturday night. “The city is still a very tough one, and places like the youth theater are a lifeline for kids like me to...

Spike Lee didn’t care that Madonna wasn’t quite in vogue when casting his 1996 film “Girl 6.”
Lee, who has counted Madonna as a personal friend for years, told Vulture that he wanted the “Material Girl” singer to have a cameo in the feature after her bestie Debi Mazar was also cast. Mazar played a phone-sex operator whose coworker (Theresa Randle) is an aspiring actress. Madonna stars as their boss.
Yet Madonna’s acting career was in a downward spiral at the time after her two box office flops, “Body of Evidence” and “Dangerous Game.” Lee, regardless, was undeterred.

From Spike Lee’s Inside Man and Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men to Robert Altman’s Gosford Park and Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick, the actor has worked with a range of filmmakers across an expanse of projects spanning film, television and the stage.
“I like to choose things that scare me a little bit, something that I haven’t done before. When you look at everything I’ve done, it’s a very mixed bag,” says Owen.
When it came to the Mike Nichols film Closer, it was one of the few instances where Owen was willing to retread some known territory. He had starred in the first staging of the Patrick Marber play about the intertwining lives of two couples at the Royal Theater Company and, less than a decade later, he got word that Nichols would like...

In a career that lasted four decades, the great character actor Ned Beatty worked with a number of the greatest film directors in history, starting out with John Boorman and 1972’s “Deliverance,” in which he made his spectacular screen debut. From there, he went on to work with such screen legends as Robert Altman, Sidney Lumet, John Huston, Mike Nichols and Spike Lee.
Beatty was nominated for an Academy Award for 1976’s “Network,” directed by Lumet, as well as a Golden Globe Award nomination for portraying an Irish tenor in 1991’s “Hear My Song.” Beatty did not appear in films until he was 35 years old and was immediately pegged as a character actor, a category in which he flourished. His other film credits include “Nashville,” “Superman,” “Wise Blood” and “Toy Story 3.” He died in 2021.

A24 has received an influx of cash from Josh Kushner’s Thrive Capital that now values the indie studio at $3.5 billion (enterprise value), a source with knowledge of the investment told IndieWire. The studio’s new valuation is 40 percent higher than it was for the last round of funding: 2022’s $225 million investment at a $2.5 billion valuation.
That doesn’t mean Kushner threw $1 billion into the pot — far from it. Existing investors from the previous round have also upped their financial support for this new round, A24 said on Wednesday. Additionally, the A24 brand has just organically grown its valuation with its successes in recent years, including “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022), “Talk to Me” (2022), and this year’s “Civil War.”
But still, it must have been substantial. The Financial Times reported Kushner’s investment was $100 million, which we understand to be in the ballpark.

A24 has closed an investment round led by Thrive Capital, the New York investment firm of Josh Kushner, who will join the indie distributor’s board of directors.
The company also received increased support from existing investors who participated in the previous round including Ken Fox’s private equity firm Stripes, and investment fund Neuberger Berman.
There was no dollar figure given in the announcement of the fund raise, the company’s second. In 2022, it secured a $225 million equity investment led by Stripes that valued A24 at $2.5 billion. Deadline hears the investment announced today reps an increase in valuation of 40% since then, valuing it at just over $3.5 billion.
Nor did the company behind Civil War and Beef specify how it will use the funds. Deadline hears it will invest in and expand production and distribution and continue work on initiatives beyond the screen from music and publishing to consumer products and live theater.

Exclusive: Edward Norton has signed on to narrate Fasting And The Longevity Revolution, a health and wellness documentary directed by Barry Alexander Brown, best known as a longtime editor on projects directed by Spike Lee.
The doc, which is currently in production, is produced by Chiara Tilesi through her production outfit Frequency Production. Her most recent feature credit is the Oscar-nominated anthology Tell it like a Woman. She is also the founder of the non-profit We Do It Together.
Based on research by Italian-American biologist Dr. Valter Longo and other field experts, the film’s synopsis reads: Fasting and the Longevity Revolution travels from tiny villages in Calabria and Sardinia to cities like Milan, Genoa, and Los Angeles, and into the mountains of southern Ecuador to reveal that genetic mutations, fasting, or both can make simple organisms live 10 times longer and protect humans from cancer, diabetes, dementia and heart disease.

Mia Goth has been making waves with her portrayal of Maxine Minx in Ti West’s upcoming film MaXXXine. Set in 1980s Los Angeles, the film follows Maxine’s journey to stardom while grappling with dark and surreal elements that blur the lines between horror and reality. The director, Ti West, has noted the unique stylistic choices for the film, inspired by none other than Spike Lee’s Summer of Sam. West describes how MaXXXine inverts his usual style, commenting it has more in common with Summer of Sam…it does play a significant role in the story but in its own particular way.

It’s a whodunit with a whole lot of drama. Jennifer Lawrence will get to feud, day-drink and access oodles of disposable income, at least until a body turns up, in “The Wives,” a murder mystery that is in the vein of “The Real Housewives.”
Apple Original Films acquired the project in what it is describing as a “highly competitive situation.” Lawrence will produce the film alongside Justine Ciarrocchi for her company, Excellent Cadaver. Tony and Independent Spirit Award nominee Jeremy O. Harris and Josh Godfrey will also produce the picture under their bb2 banner. It is currently in development, so no word on the final plot or when it might shoot.

Joining Lawrence on the producing team is Justine Ciarrocchi, her partner at the duo’s Excellent Cadaver production banner, as well as Tony and Independent Spirit Award nominee Jeremy O. Harris (Zola, Slave Play) and Josh Godfrey. The latter two will produce under their bb2 banner.

Jonathan Majors has landed his first film role following his much-publicized trial and misdemeanor conviction. The actor will star in the supernatural revenge thriller Merciless from filmmaker Martin Villeneuve, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
