Released in 2008, Kate Winslet’s The Reader is one of a kind. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, the film left its viewers speechless. Based on a German novel of the same name, The Reader was nominated for five Academy Awards in 2009, out of which it won one – Kate Winslet’s first and only Oscar so far.
The Reader (2008) | Mirage Enterprises
There is a scene in the film where Kate Winslet’s Hanna Schmitz is trying to prove her innocence at a trial where several SS guards were accused of letting 300 Jewish women and children die in a fire. The trial ended with Hanna pleading guilty to writing a report which stated that the guards did not know about the fire until the morning. While Hanna was not the one to write the report, the reason why she lied still breaks the heart of many viewers, and rightly so.

Kate Winslet, an icon whose name sparkles in the firmament of film history with the gloss of a polished diamond. From her unforgettable appearance in James Cameron’s Titanic to the gritty streets of Mare of Easttown, the Oscar-winning actress has carved a niche where complex, resilient, and authentically depicted women reign supreme.
But, you may wonder, does her influence waft far beyond the big screen? Well, Winslet, 48, has channeled her passion into championing the unfiltered representation of women’s narratives.

Stepping into the fragrant embrace of Lancôme’s Tresor in 2007, Winslet infused the essence of true joy and poignant moments into this ‘hug me’ scent.

The ‘90s are back – also in Naima Mohamud’s upcoming “Halima,” produced by Finland’s It’s Alive Films, behind Oscar entry “Euthanizer,” and No-Office Films.
“It was a wild time. The hair! The clothes! I really wanted to go back to when boybands, Tamagotchis and popper pants were all the rage. And Aqua, the greatest ‘90s pop band in the world, [behind] ‘Barbie Girl’!” enthused the director, who used to be “obsessed” with its singer Lene Nystrøm.
“I tried cutting my own bangs and dyeing my hair with food coloring to rock her hairstyle. It didn’t work, of course, and the following months were agony. I got told off for wasting food coloring my mother needed to make Somali dessert halwa.”
In Mohamud’s partly autobiographical “down-to-earth dramedy about loneliness, childhood and conquering your fears” – currently in development and eyeing a 2025 shoot – it will be Halima’s turn to experience such “heartwarming and humorous” misadventures.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have long been major fan favorites, especially as lovers onscreen. This is because of the outstanding chemistry the duo has successfully displayed all along, resulting in some of the most critically acclaimed masterpieces of all time. However, the pair didn’t exactly say yes to starring opposite each other the entire time.

Well, Winslet for one most certainly didn’t, and ended up turning down one too many roles that asked her to be the onscreen lover of DiCaprio. The same was the case for Inception as well, which is, unarguably, one of DiCaprio’s highest-grossing movies. As it turns out, the actress was asked to play the actor’s lover once again, but her response was a big no.

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” When she won back then Stone was 28 and joined the ranks of 31 other winners in their 20s. Another 35, including Stone the second time around, have been thirtysomething when they took to the stage to collect their Oscars.
Bracketing Stone’s two wins were women who defied this bias toward youth: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand (who was 60 and 63 when she won for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “Nomadland” respectively), 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). Julianne Nicholson on Embracing Challenging Roles Julianne Nicholson has never shied away from taking on demanding roles, proving her mettle once again in the upcoming feature, ‘Janet Planet’. From her lauded performance alongside Kate Winslet in ‘Mare of Easttown’, where she played a challenging role, she’s kept audiences captivated with her nuanced portrayals. The Story Behind Janet Planet ‘Janet Planet‘ is an evocative coming-of-age story directed by playwright Annie Baker in her feature film debut. Described as a tiny masterpiece, this film offers a unique perspective akin to a child’s-eye view, free from nostalgia, directly representing the mind of an...

And we’re back.
Just six months after Fox aired the strike-delayed, wildly anticlimactic, 75th Emmy awards, ABC is prepping for the 76th.
Earlier today, the TV Academy revealed the 2024 Emmy nominees, who will convene on Sept. 15 at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. The telecast, which will air live on both coasts, will celebrate programming and performances that aired between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024. We’ll have plenty of time to debate who should win, who will win (and who definitely will not) as the new crop of nominees returns to the campaign trail.
In the meantime, let’s break down what just happened: the snubs, the surprises and what it all means for the big show.

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

Roadside Attractions has released a fresh trailer for Kate Winslet’s upcoming film Lee, centered around the celebrated war photographer Lee Miller. This film promises to be an intense and compelling look into the life of Miller, a fashion model-turned-war correspondent for Vogue magazine during WWII. A Pivotal Decade in Lee Miller’s Life The narrative begins in the South of France, 1938, where Lee Miller vacations with her artist and poet friends. The film is not a generic biopic but rather focuses on the critical decade that changed her life. It portrays her as a middle-aged woman who defied societal expectations...

As with any massive awards announcement, some nominees are celebrating this morning, and some who decidedly are not. Despite what was once considered a generally weak year in several categories, the 2024 Emmy Awards were full of deserving talent who were unfortunately not recognized for their efforts. The biggest omission was for “The Curse” across multiple categories. But not everyone can get into the party, right? Keeping all that in mind, here are some of the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2024 Emmy Awards nominations.

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.

Sky Cinema has dropped the highly anticipated trailer for Lee, the World War II drama starring Kate Winslet. Based on the true story of Lee Miller, an American photographer determined to document the truth of the Nazi regime, this film promises a gripping portrayal. Despite the odds stacked against female correspondents, Miller captured some of the war’s most critical images, paying an enormous personal price. Exploring Lee Miller’s Story The film stars Kate Winslet as Lee Miller, who was a celebrated photographer and model by her early 20s, even gracing Vogue covers. N*de scenes in Hollywood are nothing new. While some are okay with baring their bodies for the screen, all a part of the art, some show hesitancy on the matter. And actor Jim Caviezel, who is most famous for the movie The Passion of the Christ and the show, Person of Interest, is in the latter group of people.

Set in Paris, Nathalie Emmanuel plays Zee, an infamous assassin known as the Queen of the Dead.

The pair become caught up in a sinister criminal conspiracy that will set her on a collision course with her own past. Eric Cantona, Tchéky Karyo and Grégory Montel co-star.
Woo directs from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland.

Cinematographer Ellen Kuras makes her directorial debut in the movie that stars Kate Winslet as American photographer Lee Miller, Andy Samberg as Life Magazine photographer David E. Scherman; Alexander Skarsgård as English Surrealist painter, photographer, poet and biographer Roland Penrose; Marion Cotillard as Solange D’Ayen, the fashion director of French Vogue and close friend of Miller’s: Josh O’Connor as Tony, a young journalist and Andrea Riseborough as British Vogue Editor Audrey Withers.

Even as bombs and bullets fly around her, Kate Winslet also has to battle sexism among Second World War correspondents in the latest trailer for Lee.
In Ellen Kuras’ biopic for Sky, Winslet portrays real-life American war correspondent Lee Miller.
“I just want to do my part. Why should the men get to decide what this is?,” Winslet, wanting to document Nazi atrocities, asks her Vogue editor (Andrea Riseborough) early on in the trailer.
Surmounting the odds arrayed against women looking to work on the front lines as war correspondents, Lee did get to the capture key wartime images for British Vogue, including the destruction caused by the Blitz and the aftermath of D-Day. But Lee paid a personal price to witness brutal warfare firsthand as an accredited U.S. journalist.

2024 has been some year for the importance of photojournalists being writ large both on screen and in the news. Earlier this year, Alex Garland's Civil War envisioned its cautionary tale of an imagined new American Civil War literally through the lens of war photographers Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst) and Jessie Cullen (Cailee Spaeny). Just this past weekend, a turning point in the States' Presidential race was captured in an extraordinary image of a bloody-eared Donald Trump. Now, in Cinematographer Ellen Kuras' feature directorial debut Lee, Oscar winner Kate Winslet is set to tell the story of a decade in the life of iconic American war photographer and WWII correspondent Lee Miller. Check out the trailer for the Sky Original movie below:

Kate Winslet is embodying the iconic American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller for an eponymous biopic.
Winslet leads “Lee,” the directorial feature debut from award-winning cinematographer Ellen Kuras. The film centers on a decade in the life of Lee Miller, who was formerly a model and muse for male artists before traveling to Europe to report from the frontline during WWII. Lee infamously posed in Hitler’s private bathtub while abroad and used her Rolleiflex camera to “give a voice to the voiceless,” the film teases.
Its logline reads: What she captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific. Her photographs of the war, its victims and its consequences remain among the most significant and historically important of the Second World War. She changed war photography forever, but Lee Miller paid an enormous personal price for what she witnessed and the stories she fought to tell.

“Lee” is a new live-action feature, directed by Ellen Kuras, starring Kate Winslet as a wartime photographer, opening September 27, 2024 in theaters:
“…in the late 1930’s , photographer ‘Lee Miller’ (Winslet) leaves her world and her artistic circle of friends behind in France, and travels to London, having fallen wildly in love with the art dealer ‘Roland Penrose’. The two embark on a passionate relationship, then war breaks out in Europe.
“Already a renowned photographer, Miller gains a job completing assignments for ‘British Vogue’, but is shocked by the restrictions placed on female photographers. As the Third Reich Hitler’s takes over Europe, Miller grows increasingly frustrated that her work is constrained by patriarchal rules, leaving her documenting the British home front.

In the world of cinema, directors try out several things to perfect a particular scene. Many would think performing an action sequence would be the most difficult. However, if several actors are to be believed, it would be the love scenes that are the toughest to perform on a set, with so many people around. But certain intimate scenes can be performed with the leads not even touching each other.

Well, Agatha is here, and she brings all the fun with her. With its first trailer, Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha All Along promises a trippy voyage into the craziest corners of the Marvel Comics universe. Filled with scenes from a fever dream, Marvel’s new series is a long-awaited apology letter to the fans if it really lives up to the hype.

In a setting portraying all the classic visuals from those ubiquitous network television crime thrillers, Agatha All Along begins and ends the same way WandaVision did — enveloped in mysticism and zaniness. But while Wanda lost herself in the sitcoms of the bygone decades, Agatha starts by surrounding herself with death and foreboding calamity.
Agatha Harkness and Her Coven of Chaos
If True Detective without all the monologues was set in the town of Forks, it would look a lot like the intro to Agatha All Along.

If there is any agreement among Emmy pundits this awards season, it’s the fact that perhaps the most competitive collection of categories surrounds the limited series genre, where an embarrassment of riches promises a dogfight among an abundant list of worthy nominees in Best Limited Series and the four limited/made-for-tv movie acting lineups. During a limited-focused slugfest debate in advance of the Emmy nominations announcement on July 17, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were all in agreement that Gold Derby pacesetter “Baby Reindeer” is a worthy frontrunner that’s likely to ultimately take the top limited prize (assuming it is in fact nominated). But they were all over the map on how the rest of that category shaped up as well as how the performer slots were poised to shake out. While there are a...

Cameron remembered his longtime friend in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, writing, “A great producer and a great human being has left us. Jon Landau believed in the dream of cinema. Actress Minnie Driver was the ‘it girl’ of ‘90s Hollywood, as she was touted to be the next big star after her Oscan-nominated performance in Good Will Hunting. While she was expected to hit the levels of stardom of other starlets like Kate Winslet and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Driver has chosen to work on more independent and small-scale productions.
Driver’s last blockbuster film, Hard Rain, was reportedly not a good experience. Apart from being a box office bomb, the filming conditions were reportedly extreme and miserable due to it being set around a natural disaster. To top it off, Driver reportedly fought with the producer over miserable working conditions.

Kate Winslet remembered her Titanic and Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau following the news of his death at age 63, exclaiming that “his passion for filmmaking only deepened with age.”
Winslet said she’s known Landau “since I was 20 years old.” The British actress, who prior to Titanic was known for arthouse films like Sense and Sensibility and Heavenly Creatures, rocketed to blockbuster stardom with the Landau produced, James Cameron directed 1997 movie about the doomed ocean liner, which for a while, became the highest grossing movie ever at $2.2 billion (that title would cede to Cameron’s Avatar at $2.92 billion). Titanic earned Winslet her second career Oscar nomination/first Best Actress nom. In Titanic, Winslet played the upper crust passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater. Though engaged to rich guy Caledon “Cal” Hockley, Rose falls for Leonardo DiCaprio’s poor artist, Jack Dawson, while on board.

Jon Landau, the illustrious producer and COO of James Cameron‘s Lightstorm Entertainment, died July 5 in Los Angeles after a 16-month-long battle with cancer. He was 63.

Labour wins: The results of the UK general election officially landed this morning in Europe, and the Labour Party has won with a huge majority, which will give it immense power to enact change in Britain after 14 years of Conservative rule. The win has been expected for a long while and there were a series of Conservative gaffes during the six-week campaigning period that meant the ruling party failed to make in-roads on Labour’s long-standing poll lead. Kate Winslet was feted before the European premiere of her film Lee at the Munich International Film Festival and told the packed crowd about starring in, and producing, the movie about war photographer Lee Miller.
Taking the stage to accept the Festival’s CineMerit award, Winslet said that the release of Lee had been put back. “We chose to delay the release of Lee because of the strike and because I wanted to be able to talk about the real true labor of love that it was for me and my producing partner Kate Solomon to make this film.
“It’s hard to make films as a woman and it is hard to make films about women. I hope with this film people will be more open-eared and more open-eyed to wanting to absorb stories of phenomenally important historical figures like the formidable Lee Miller.”
Miller was a model turned photographer turned war correspondent.

Munich welcomed Kate Winslet like she was the queen of the world on Tuesday night when the Oscar-winning actress received a lifetime achievement award at the Munich International Film Festival.
The crowd at Munich’s Deutsches Theater whooped and hollered as Winslet took to the stage to accept her award, and to introduce the European premiere of her latest film, Ellen Kuras’ biopic Lee, in which she plays war photographer Lee Miller.
“It’s like I’m a film star!” joked Winslet, egging on the crowd to keep clapping. “No really, this is not how I usually get treated…I’m just going to lap it up.”
David Kross, Winslet’s young German co-star from The Reader, presented her with the CineMerit award, recalling that they first met “16 years ago when I was just 17 years old, had only made two films and had just left school. And you were Kate Winslet.

Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s fortnightly strand in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track. So we’re going to do the hard work for you.
To New Zealand we head for a gripping series that deals with themes of betrayal, redemption, ageing and sexism, which has been making waves locally. Starring Robyn Malcolm and Peter Mullan, After the Party showcases New Zealand production at its very best. With a number of big deals across the line, including to the UK’s Channel 4, this one could be coming to a small screen near you soon.
