Tim Heidecker has announced a new album: Slipping Away, due on October 18th via Bloodshot Records. Today, along with the announcement, he’s released the music video for the album’s lead single, “Well’s Running Dry.”
Following 2020’s Fear of Death and 2022’s High School, the new album will see Heidecker continue to explore resonant themes with vulnerable lyricism, tapping “into universal anxieties, familiar settings, and, occasionally, a blast of apocalyptic unease,” according to its press release.

Recorded with his The Very Good Band — and featuring an appearance by his daughter, Amelia — Slipping Away’s music captures the raw chemistry of musicians playing together live. “My favorite records are the ones that were just recorded in a room with a band playing,” Hedicker explained, citing Bob Dylan and The Band as influences. “And that’s what we did.”

Fifty years ago, Bob Dylan reunited with the Band for an arena tour where they performed 40 shows in just 42 days, often playing two gigs a night. The double live LP Before The Flood featured recordings from their concerts in New York and Los Angeles, but that represented just a tiny fraction of what they captured on tape throughout the run.
The rest is finally coming out September 20 on the 27-disc, 431-track box set Bob Dylan—The 1974 Live Recordings. It features newly mixed recordings of Dylan’s complete set at 27 concerts,...

The Outlaw Music Festival Tour has generated much attention due to Willie Nelson’s extended absence from the first two weeks of shows due to illness, Lukas Nelson stepping in for his father with occasional help from guests like Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Edie Brickell, the triumphant return of Willie on July 4, and the weird Bob Dylan shirt sold every night at the merch stand.
All of that has overshadowed the fact that Dylan is playing some of his loosest concerts in recent memory. After three years of delivering...

Exclusive: The snowy streets of Minneapolis are seeking to snatch Sundance from the snowy slopes of Park City.
Leading with a tagline of “You Couldn’t Cast A Better Location,” Minnesota’s most populous metropolis is among the select cities and jurisdictions that has submitted a detailed bid for the Robert Redford-founded indie film festival.
With CEOs from Target, Best Buy and the parent company of U.S. Bank backing Minneapolis’ proposal, the host committee is promising at least $2 million annually “to sustain and grow the festival,” says Film North executive director Andrew Peterson.
“With our thriving arts and entertainment scene, diverse cultural heritage, and passionate film community, Minneapolis is the ideal backdrop for the Sundance Film Festival,” Mayor Jacob Frey tells Deadline.

Personally and professionally, Sam Peckinpah was running on fumes by the time he made 1973’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Years of substance abuse left the director in such fragile health that he spent some days on the production’s Mexico locations filming from a hospital bed, and his dilapidated condition only exacerbated his notoriously combative personality and contributed to the film’s budget and schedule overruns. Infuriated by the escalating expense of the production and set on an arbitrary runtime ceiling, MGM took over editing before Peckinpah could finish the job and released a hastily assembled 106-minute version that hit theaters to indifferent reviews and middling returns. Only in 1988, four years after the director’s death, did the film gain stature as one of his finest works thanks to the release of a rough, never-finalized preview cut prepared by Peckinpah.

After missing several recent shows due to an undisclosed illness, Willie Nelson made his triumphant return to the stage at his annual 4th of July Picnic in Camden, New Jersey on Thursday night.
The 91-year-old country singer took the stage shortly before 10:00 p.m. local time and by all accounts sounded in fine form. Accompanied by his son Lukas Nelson and the Family Band, Willie performed more than 20 songs, including “On the Road Again,” “Always on My Mind,” “Roll Me Up,” and “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground.” Nelson also debuted “The Border,” from his newly released album of the same name. After missing half a dozen or so concerts of the Outlaw Music Fest due to unspecified illness, Willie Nelson returned to the stage for his annual Fourth of July Picnic, held outside of Philly in Camden, New Jersey, on Thursday. Nelson, throwing his arms in the air in victory, was greeted with roaring cheers from the audience. The musician then took a seat on a stool to begin playing.

Updated: Willie Nelson will soon be on the road again after an extended break on doctor’s orders. Originally, on June 21, the country music legend was advised to “rest for the next four days.” That was then extended to this week, before it was announced that the Presidential Medal of Freedom winner would, appropriately, be available to rejoin the running Outlaw Tour on July 4.
Nelson, 91, has had health issues interfere with touring in recent years, but the news that the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is well enough to rejoin his compatriots is welcome news.
Previously on June 21: “We regret to inform you that Willie Nelson is not feeling well and, per doctor’s orders, has been advised to rest for the next four days,” reads a statement posted to the legendary county singer’s socials. He was scheduled to appear as part of the Outlaw Music Festival tonight,...

Bob Dylan has spent the past two weeks crisscrossing the country on the Outlaw Music Festival summer tour alongside Celisse, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and Lukas Nelson, who has been subbing in for his ailing father, Willie. Most Dylan fans have rightly been focused on his decision to jettison his Rough and Rowdy Ways set list of the past three years, bring in a series of 1950s covers songs he’s never done before, part ways with longtime pedal-steel player Donnie Herron, and reunite with gospel-era drummer Jim Keltner.

If we listen to each other’s heart, we’ll find we love A Goofy Movie as cinematic art!
Okay, that isn’t how the lyrics to the now famous “I 2 I” song first heard in 1995’s A Goofy Movie go but they reflect how the world at large views the film these days. Thanks to a generation of kids watching the movie over and over on VHS, endless cosplays of rock star Powerline, and the irresistible god-tier quality of Tevin Campbell’s musical contributions, A Goofy Movie is more beloved today than it’s ever been.
But with so many repeated viewings little questions start to appear in the mind of fans. Why didn’t the movie, a sort of sequel to the Goof Troop TV series, include the other members of antagonist Pete’s family, Peg and Pistol? How in the hell did Goofy and Max get to...

Willie Nelson has been “cleared” to return to his co-headlining Outlaw Music Festival with Bob Dylan after missing the tour’s first week of shows due to an unspecified illness.
On Friday, the country legend’s social media announced that Nelson had been “cleared by his doctors to go back on the road again. He will resume performing on the Outlaw Tour next week.”
However, “Willie will not be on this weekend’s dates” — including dates in Syracuse, Long Island and Holmdel, New Jersey — bringing Nelson’s total of missed gigs to seven shows.

The formula for making a successful music biopic in modern times has relied too much on repeating the same story over and over again, just with different characters. The recurring plot of rags-to-riches to booze, drugs, and partying, then eventually hitting rock bottom, then struggling to find a way back, and finally, redemption or death (or redemption in death), has become so common that one would think that the musicians and stars whose lives those films depict have lived the most boring and unoriginal existences. While the 21st century brought about completely new trends in how to create biopics of famous people (The Social Network) being the ideal example of that), music biopics still somehow lag and tend to stick more to the old assembly-line approach. Not every single one of them is like that, however. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here.

Patti Smith offered up an emotional rendition of Lana Del Rey’s song “Summertime Sadness” at her concert in Dublin last night. Smith, who performed at Vicar Street, played a setlist of several classics, but also took the opportunity to perform Del Rey’s 2012 hit.
Appearing with her band, Smith gave an intimate, pensive performance of the song, much to the delight of the crowd. The singer dedicated the song to her late husband and MC5 member Fred Smith, telling the audience it reminded her of their “wild youth.”

Kinky Friedman — the Texas-raised musician, writer, satirist, dog lover, gubernatorial candidate and overall provocateur — died after a battle with Parkinson’s on Thursday at his Echo Hill Ranch in TX, according to a post on his X account. He was 79.
To say Friedman was larger-than-life was an understatement. His quick wit was as ubiquitous as his cowboy hat and cigar. He was often more colorful than his famous friends such as Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Larry McMurtry and Billy Bob Thornton.
His persona made him a lively guest on late night shows such as The Late Show With David Letterman and The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno. He also had parts in several films, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
Friedman wrote detective novels — many of them featuring a character styled after himself — as well as a column for Texas Monthly.

Kinky Friedman, who lived a colorful life as a country singer, satirist, and one-time Texas gubernatorial candidate, has died at the age of 79.
“Kinky Friedman stepped on a rainbow at his beloved Echo Hill surrounded by family & friends,” reads a social media statement announcing his death. “Kinkster endured tremendous pain & unthinkable loss in recent years but he never lost his fighting spirit and quick wit. Kinky will live on as his books are read and his songs are sung.”
Richard Samet Friedman was born to Jewish parents in Chicago on October 31st, 1944. The following year, his family moved to Texas after his father, S. Thomas Friedman, was discharged from the Air Force. When he was still young, Friedman’s parents opened a summer camp called Echo Hill.

Kinky Friedman, the eccentric country singer-songwriter whose musings, novels, one-liners and quixotic gubernatorial run made him a folk hero, died Thursday at age 79 at his home in Texas.

Take yourself back to 2015 for a second, and imagine someone came up to you and said, “That kid who made ‘White Iverson’ — nine years from now he’s going to be one of the biggest country music stars on the planet.” Maybe it’d seem inconceivable. But even then there was plenty of reason and evidence to believe Post Malone could pull off exactly the kind of country pivot he has in 2024.

Arath Herce is in his studio in Mexico City, wearing an unbuttoned black shirt, jeans, and a silver chain with a single charm. He touches his face repeatedly, trying to hide his genuine shyness and saying things like, “I guess death haunts us all. It’s the only thing that makes life meaningful.”
Talking about life and death might not sit well with everyone, but it works for Herce. To some, his music can be pretty rock-oriented. However, his ability to intertwine poetic lines like, “I’d like to buy...

This weekend marked the kickoff of the 2024 “Outlaw Music Festival Tour” (get tickets here), and though fans didn’t get to see Willie Nelson (who had to cancel his set “per doctor’s orders”), they did get to see Bob Dylan pull a wonderfully Bob Dylan move by playing an all-new set of ‘50s covers and recent deep cuts.
Dylan’s performances on Friday and Saturday night marked the first time in a few years that Dylan has made major changes to his setlist, which has mostly been populated by cuts from his 2020 album Rough and Rowdy Ways, as well as older original songs.

Dylan opened Friday’s show with a cover of Willie Dixon’s blues standard, “My Babe,” followed by renditions of Chuck Berry’s “Little Queenie,” The Fleetwoods’ “Mr. Blue,” Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart,” and Sanford Clarck’s “The Fool.

Before Bob Dylan even walked onstage Friday night to kick off the summer Outlaw Music Festival tour at Ameris Bank Amphitheater in Alpharetta, Georgia, word circulated through the fan community that big changes were afoot in Dylan World. Super fan Ray Padgett was on site with early reports that gospel-era drummer Jim Keltner was taking over from Jerry Pentecost, and pedal steel player Donnie Herron was out after a 19-year stint in the band.

John Lennon’s music has inspired many people to live better lives. That doesn’t mean he wanted to get onstage and do a charity concert with The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger. The “Imagine” singer had a very negative view of certain types of philanthropy. Despite this, he didn’t think that philanthropy was always bad.
John Lennon joked people wanted him to do concerts with Mick Jagger and God and Jesus
John was associated with peace and love, but charity singles weren’t his thing. George Harrison released “Bangla Desh,” the first charity single, in 1971, the year after The Beatles broke up. George also did The Concert for Bangla Desh with other stars such as Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Badfinger, Ringo Starr, and Billy Preston (often called the Fifth Beatle). Both were designed to raise money for the survivors of the Bengali genocide.

Even the most casual students of American music will be quick to tell you that it’s almost impossible to find a musical tradition that can’t be traced back to the blues.
From the lyrical repetition and call-and-response structure of countless pop songs to the 12-bar guitar lines that formed the foundation of jazz and rock ‘n roll (which in turn created many of the samples that fueled the genesis of hip-hop), America’s first art form produced many of the creative traditions and stylistic flourishes that we now take for granted.
As the blues artists of the early 20th-century continue to influence a new generation of musicians in both direct and indirect ways, a forgotten documentary featuring many of the genre’s most influential voices is returning to theaters this summer. Roviros Manthoulis’ 1973 film “The Blues Under the Skin” saw the music documentarian traveling through the deep south...

Jeremy Tepper, who relentlessly championed the outlaw country genre by highlighting both its revered icons and rebellious upstarts in his role as program director for SiriusXM’s “Outlaw Country” channel, died Friday. Tepper’s wife, the singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell, announced his death of a heart attack in New York City. He was 60.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band roared back to life Wednesday night at Madrid, Spain’s Metropolitano Stadium, three weeks after they were forced to postpone shows so Springsteen could recover from vocal strain.
“Hola Madrid!” Springsteen said upon taking the stage. “Estáis preparados?” The spirited crowd was indeed ready for a 30-song, two-and-a-half hour set that included the first live rendition of the High Hopes deep cut “Frankie Fell in Love” since 2015 and a cover of John Fogerty’s 1975 classic “Rockin’ All Over the World,” which they hadn...

Françoise Hardy, the French singer-songwriter known for her melancholic ballads and inimitable vibe, has died from laryngeal cancer in Paris. She was 80 years old.
Hardy’s passing was confirmed on Tuesday by her son, Thomas Dutronc, who posted a vintage photo of the two together with the caption, “Maman est partie.” Hardy had been struggling with cancer for over a decade, and even ceased singing in 2021 as a result of treatments.
Hardy was born Françoise Madeleine Hardy on January 17th, 1944, in Nazi-occupied France, and was shaped by the post-war culture she grew up in. As a child, she was enrolled in piano lessons, but really took to music when she turned 16 and was gifted a guitar. Soon after, she began writing her own compositions.
In the early ‘60s, Hardy began recording and became a sensation in France rather rapidly, thanks to the emergence of the youth-driven yé-yé movement. In 1962, her debut album,...

Françoise Hardy, a French singer, actor and model whose classical beauty and often melancholy music combined to transfix fans internationally in the 1960s and beyond, has died at age 80.
Her son, Thomas Dutronc, also a musician, reported the death on his Instagram account, posting a baby photo of himself with his mother and writing: “Maman est partie.” Or, mom is gone.
Hardy had battled cancer for at least the last two decades, and had been known to have been fighting lymphoma and laryngeal since 2004.
In a sign of her ongoing legend, in 2023, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Hardy as No. 162 on a ranking of the greatest singers of all time. She was the only French performer on the list. Will Hermes wrote that Hardy “epitomized French cool and Gallic heat simultaneously, with a breathy, deadpan alto that wafted like Gauloises smoke. Her words enhanced her tone: Writing her own material, unusual in the early mid-Sixties,...

The biggest, glossiest album of Bruce Springsteen’s career, 1984’s Born in the U.S.A., has a shadowy, equally classic twin — the low-fi, solo-acoustic Nebraska, released two years earlier. The albums are inextricably linked, beginning with the fact that multiple Born in the U.S.A. tracks — the title song, “Downbound Train,” “Working on the Highway” (via an earlier song called “Child Bride”), and the B side “Pink Cadillac” — were originally part of the acoustic demo sessions that ultimately became Nebraska. The first sessions for Born in the U.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have shared their rendition of “When the Levee Breaks” to mark the recent launch of the duo’s summer tour.
The track — a Memphis Minnie cover, of course, popularized by Led Zeppelin’s IV — is Plant and Krauss’ first single since the longtime collaborators released their Raise the Roof in 2021.
On the recording, Plant and Krauss are joined by guitarist Jd McPherson, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Dennis Crouch, string player Stuart Duncan (who delivers this version’s fiddle solo), and multi-instrumentalist Viktor Krauss.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have been performing “When the Levee Breaks” together live for several years; now, in celebration of their latest tour kicking off this week (grab tickets here), the duo has shared a new recording of the song.
The new version of “When the Levee Breaks” is the first release from Plant and Krauss since their 2021 album Raise the Roof. Taking some cues from the 1971 Led Zeppelin cover of the Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy original, the duo’s new arrangement breathes fresh life into the song, with rich harmonies, a blistering fiddle part, and an acoustic, Americana feel.

Sometime in 1984, when E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg saw a bunch of potential covers for Bruce Springsteen’s next album, he instantly noticed the Annie Leibovitz shot of the singer’s jeans-clad rear end. “My comment, jokingly, was ‘I like that one because that’s the view I always have,'” Weinberg says in the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “Everybody laughed, and then they picked that shot. And it was a steamroller after that.”

After the success of Prey, director Dan Trachtenberg is reportedly working on his next standalone film in the Predator franchise. Titled Badlands, the film reportedly features Elle Fanning in the lead role. While no plot details have been revealed, the film will also be set in the Predator universe like Prey.

Fanning’s casting might just be a masterstroke for the film as she has been known for her powerhouse performances. While she was recently seen in her Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated series The Great, Fanning has been delivering amazing performances since she made her debut as a child actress in I Am Sam. Here are five performances that prove why she is the best choice for Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator film.

Earlier this year we brought you the very exciting news that, following the success of his standalone Predator film Prey, director Dan Trachtenberg would be making more movies centred around everyone's favourite extraterrestrial big game hunter. And now the first of those movies, Badlands, seems to have found its star. According to Deadline, Elle Fanning is in talks to join the Yautjans' latest hunt.
Plot details for the latest standalone Predator-verse joint are currently being kept under lock and key, beyond the obvious admission that Badlands will in fact feature a Predator. We do, however, know that Badlands has been co-written by Trachtenberg alongside his Prey story partner and scribe Patrick Aison, and that unlike its predecessor, this one's expected to be set in the future. While the future setting rules out Badlands being a direct follow-up to Trachtenberg's 1719-set, Amber Midthunder starring last film, it seems Prey 2 is still in the works too.

Elle Fanning is reportedly in talks to play the lead in Badlands, Dan Trachtenberg’s follow up to 2022’s well-received Predator film, Prey.
It looks like the next film in the Predator series may have found its lead, with reports suggesting that Elle Fanning is in negotiations to take the main role in Badlands, Dan Trachtenberg’s planned follow-up to Prey.
The story was broken by The Hollywood Reporter, which states that Fanning is in line to star, although as of yet we don’t know anything about the character she will play or the time or setting that the story takes place in (although rumours suggest that we might be headed into the future).
We do know that Dan Trachtenberg has already put out one terrific Predator film though, and hopes are high that he will repeat the trick again. A gripping entry in a series which was beginning to look somewhat shaky,...
