Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Aggro DR1FT (Harmony Korine)
Is it possible to leave your enfance without losing your terrible? The one-and-only Harmony Korine, now 50 years young, returns with Aggro Dr1ft, a premiere out-of-competition at the Venice Film Festival this week and, by my count, the only so far to have triggered mass walkouts and a ten-minute standing ovation. Shot entirely in infrared and using augmented reality effects and AI imaging tools, Aggro Dr1ft appears like the fever dream of a day spent drinking lean, watching music videos, and playing God of War and Grand Theft Auto. At times it’s funny, dazzling, almost beautiful; at others ugly, misogynistic, numbingly dull. Only he could have made it. – Rory O. (full review)

For twenty-five years, the Disney classic Tarzan has entertained audiences both young and old. The film, based on the popular Edgar Rice Burroughs novel series, is considered to be the last film of the Disney Renaissance, a period of films that helped rejuvenate the company and reestablish it as an animation juggernaut.
The story of a man raised by apes in the late nineteenth century lent itself well to an animated feature with wild and imaginative settings and action sequences. The last real animated “jungle movie” that Disney was the 1967 film The Jungle Book. Now a new generation of creatives would have a go at the unique settings of the which African jungles and the exotic wildlife.
The film was co-directed by Kevin Klima and Chris Buck, with Tab Murphy, fresh off of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, brought on to write the initial treatment. Other writers, such as Bob Tzudiker and None White,...

A decade ago, I was asked to do a TedX Talk about being the father of an autistic son, and another who is neurodivergent. That talk helped me decide to write a film that would focus on a father and a son who is autistic. Ezra, in theaters now, was inspired by many of my experiences with my sons Nikos and Dimitri, and was made by artists who had children or relatives or friends who were neurodivergent, and it shows. The film is an authentic portrayal of the challenges that fathers, and mothers, must face when raising a neurodivergent 11-year-old boy. The fact that the title character of the boy, Ezra, is played by a child actor, William Fitzgerald, who is himself neurodivergent, only added to the level of truth that was found telling this story about fathers and sons.

The following piece contains spoilers for Season 3 of “Hacks”
The third season of “Hacks” ends with a twist few saw coming. After spending years under the thumb of her mentor and employer, the comic Deborah Vance (Emmy winner Jean Smart), writer Ava Daniels (Emmy nominee Hannah Einbinder) blackmails her legendary boss to balance the scales and take back what Ava thinks she deserves: the head writer position at Deborah’s new late-night show, which Deborah had promised Ava and then quickly rescinded out of fear of failure.
But while viewers were surprised by this turn of events – and enticed by the possibilities it presents for Season 4 – the show’s creators knew Ava and Deborah were headed toward this moment all along.

When Season 3 of “Hacks” premiered at the beginning of May, reaching that moment had been hard won.
Nearly two years had passed since its second season concluded; real life simply got in the way. The writers strike and the actors strikes caused delays, but even before that — and on a more serious, human note — the show’s two-time Emmy-winning star Jean Smart had emergency heart surgery.
Nevertheless, she persisted. “Hacks” — the creation of Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs — roared back for its third season, perhaps its best yet.
The season returned with a time jump, with legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) basking in the triumphant success of the deep, thoughtful and hilarious stand-up special she created with her partner in comedy, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Deborah, however, is never one to stay content, and decides to go after a soon-to-be vacant late-night talk show hosting gig, one...

Cardio is good. Sony Pictures Classics’ 4k rerelease of Run Lola Run had a healthy weekend, opening to an estimated $154k on 275 screens. This is the 25th anniversary of the U.S. debut of Tom Tykwer’s German experimental thriller that sees flame-haired Lola (Franka Potente) on the move in Berlin, pounding the pavement to come up with 100,000 Deutschmarks in 20 minutes to save her boyfriend’s life. (This was before the euro arrived). See Deadline interview here. A handful of rereleases/restorations have been box office stars post-Covid and this is another indie win.
A24’s Tuesday, a modern-day fairy tale with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, launched to $26k on two screens. Daina O. Pusic’s directorial debut premiered at Telluride. The modern-day fairy tale had sold out Q&As shows throughout the weekend and expands to a moderate nationwide footprint next week.

Ezra attempts to navigate the delicate landscape of autism through a blend of drama and comedy that sometimes veers into overly sentimental territory. Masterfully directed by Tony Goldwyn, the film draws its strength from an ensemble cast who bring remarkable depth and humanity to their roles. A personal lens on autism Central to the charm of Ezra is William Fitzgerald‘s portrayal of the titular character. Fitzgerald, who is on the autism spectrum himself, adds an unparalleled authenticity to his role. As noted, On the autism spectrum himself, Fitzgerald is given room by Goldwyn and his perfectly in sync ensemble to…...

Law & Order Season 23 introduced a new Da to replace Sam Waterson's Jack McCoy, but will Baxter be written out as quickly as he was written in?
The season finale was a Baxter-centric story about catching a potential assassin while he was running to retain his position as District Attorney.
The ending was meant to be a cliffhanger that made our jaws drop to the floor, as Baxter's political fate was unknown as the credits rolled.
Let's look at what happened at the end of the episode and where things will likely go from here.
Baxter Had To Choose Between His Family And His Career
Technically, the episode was about the search for the person who had shot someone else while trying to kill Baxter during a political rally. Still, it was really about politics vs. family.
Baxter's wife wanted him to drop out of the race for Manhattan Da after the assassination attempt.

In A Violent Nature, an undead murderous monster’s slow striding through the woods, has generated IFC Films’ second-best opening ever since its indie horror hit Late Night With The Devil in March.
The artsy slasher written and directed by Chris Nash will see an estimated weekend gross of $2.1 million on 1,426 screens, IFC’s widest opening ever, and a no. 8 spot at the domestic box office.
Late Night, by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, which opened to $2.8 million at 1,034 locations, is pushing $10 million. It returns to theaters June 6 and runs through the weekend on about 500 screens.
In A Violent Nature “has been steadily making waves for redefining the classic slasher genre” since its Sundance premiere, said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks Film Group, calling Nash’s feature debut “a film that will have a lasting impact in the horror space.”

It’s a fairly rare weekend at the box office when there are five new wide releases, but it’s even rare when none of those movies even crack the top six. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades, the transition weekend between May and June wasn’t going to be much better with none of the new releases opening in more than 2,000 theaters. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Disney, the one major studio in the mix, decided to dump their latest well-reviewed movie into a few hundred theaters with very little fanfare.
After settling for second place over Memorial Day, Sony Pictures’ animated “The Garfield Movie” moved into first place with an estimated $14 million, down just 42% from its three-day opening weekend, to bring its domestic total to $51.6 million. Overseas, the Chris Pratt-starring family film...

Law & Order very nearly became the longest-running crime drama on television. If it hadn't been for a 10-year hiatus, it would have reached its 24th season a long time ago.
Thanks to that break, sister show Law & Order: Svu has pulled ahead by two seasons.
Still, Law & Order is one of NBC's most iconic shows, from its "dun dun" chime between scenes to its filming on location in New York City. It's high time for a cast and character guide to help you keep track of who you can expect to see (and not see!) during Law & Order Season 24.
Two Characters Are Not Coming Back
Many viewers were shocked when Jack McCoy (Sam Waterson) left Law & Order after over 400 episodes.
Waterson had been with the series since Season 4 and was probably more closely identified with it than any other character.

“Ezra” celebrated its premiere in New York City on Thursday night with stars Robert De Niro, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, and Tony Goldwyn all in attendance.
The film is a Bleeker Street Media release that follows Max Bernal (Cannavale), who is a stand-up comedy writer (with scenes filmed at Comedy Cellar) who lives with his dad (De Niro). The comedian faces challenges when it comes to co-parenting their autistic son (William A. Fitzgerald) with his ex-wife (Byrne).
“Ezra” was inspired by the film writer Tony Spiridakis’s personal life, as he has a child who is on the spectrum. “I realized I didn’t know anything about autism, I thought I gotta write this down. Because of the lack of understanding that I had, I kept thinking, every day was a surprise,” Spiridakis told Variety at the film’s premiere.

Few big new studio wide releases, yes, but Viggo Mortensen’s latest is on 700 screens, plus limited openings for Chris Wilcha’s Flipside, Judd Apatow EP, and Spanish animated, Oscar-nominated Robot Dreams from Neon. Bleecker Street’s family drama Ezra and IFC Films’ arthouse slasher In A Violent Nature are technically wide but both well under 1,500 screens.
Viggo Mortensen directed, wrote and stars in Western The Dead Don’t Hurt presented by Shout! Studios on 730 screens. The story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s sees Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a fiercely independent woman, settle in Nevada with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Mortensen). But the outbreak of the Civil War separates them as Olsen goes to fight with the Union army, leaving Vivienne alone in a town full of corrupt officials. Premiered in Toronto, see Deadline review. It’s Mortensen’s second outing behind the camera since 2020’s Falling.

Tony Goldwyn has always been an impressive talent. As an actor, he brings honesty and heart to his work. The same is certainly true with his latest. Ezra not only features Mr. Goldwyn in a supporting role, he takes on the part of director. Ezra tells the story of divorced parents attempting to raise their their son who is on the autism spectrum. Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne are terrific as the parents, and William A. Fitzgerald is equally compelling as Ezra. The film also features Robert DeNiro, Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson, and Whoopi Goldberg.
We recently sat down to have a discussion with Tony Goldwyn about the new film. And yes, Mr. Goldwyn was as kind and professional as you can get. During our conversation, he opened up about taking on Tony Spiridakis’ wonderful script. The actor/director discussed casting both Bobby and Rose, as well as finding the...

Plot: A combative stand-up comedian (Bobby Cannavale) in a messy custody battle kidnaps his autistic son to keep him from being heavily medicated and placed in a special school.
Review: Tony Goldwyn’s Ezra is a warm-hearted father-son tale that tries to depict the challenges of raising an autistic child in an authentic way. The film was written by Tony Spiridakis, who has an autistic son of his own, while William Fitzgerald, who plays the title role, is on the spectrum. It’s realistic with some terrific performances from the ensemble cast, including Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Goldwyn himself, and Robert DeNiro (in a meatier role than usual).
The film is a great showcase for Cannavale, who’s pretty convincing as a somewhat confrontational comic who mines his own fractured personal life for material. In it, his character, Max, is reeling from a bitter divorce from his wife, Jenna (Rose...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Ben Thompson on Wbgr-fm on May 30th, reviewing “Ezra,” featuring Bobby Cannavale and Robert De Niro as a son and father, struggling to help raise an autistic boy. In theaters on May 31st.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
William Fitzgerald portrays the title character, an autistic boy in New York City who is being co-raised by his divorced parents Max (Bobby Cannavale) and Jenna (Rose Byrne). Max is an at-the-brink stand up comedian who lives with his father Stan (Robert De Niro). When Max attacks one of Ezra’s doctors, he is forced into a restraining order, but decides to take matters into his own hands and kidnaps his son, and takes a road trip while learning that he’s landed a gig on the Jimmy Kimmel show. As law enforcement, his ex-wife and Stan pursue Max and Ezra, the whole situation comes into focus.

A sweet and gracious and often painfully labored dramedy about a stand-up comic who struggles to connect with his autistic 11-year-old son, Tony Goldwyn’s “Ezra” rides an emotional honesty that’s almost completely undone by the sweaty contrivances of its plotting. But this modest little movie’s refusal to be limited by its “problem” — its insistence that stories involving neurodiverse characters can, should, and must touch on a wider range of human experience if they hope to ring true — feels like a step in the right direction for how such people are depicted on screen and seen in the world. It’s an approach that’s sure to resonate with anyone whose kid is on the spectrum, their autism just one ingredient in the endlessly complex soup of who they are and how they’re raised.
It’s also an approach, “Ezra” suggests, that requires a hard-won degree of finesse.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Bulletproof,” the Season 3 finale of “Hacks.”
The hacks of “Hacks” are moving up in the world, but not without a cost.
After tireless work alongside Ava (Hannah Einbinder), Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter), the penultimate episode of “Hacks” Season 3 saw Deborah finally land the late-night hosting gig she’d been dreaming of since having her first chance taken away decades ago. In the finale, titled “Bulletproof,” her celebration gets cut short as she starts to prepare for the onslaught of pressure to come.
It hasn’t been long since Deborah reinvited her sister Kathy (J. Smith-Cameron) into her life after cutting her off years ago for having an affair with her husband, but she then distractedly whittles down a weekend they’d planned together to a single day, during which she reveals that she secretly had their parents’ remains removed...

“Hacks” will finally give us late-night with Deborah Vance.
The beloved Emmy-winning Max comedy series has been renewed for a fourth season. And following the events of the Season 3 finale, it seems that Jean Smart’s stand-up character Deborah Vance is just getting started…
Season 3 premiered to the show’s usual critical acclaim on May 2 and the season finale is now streaming on Max. The third season began with Deborah (Smart) riding high off the success of her standup special while her former writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) pursued new opportunities back in Los Angeles.
The IndieWire review gave the third installment an A- rating, with critic Ben Travers writing, “After Season 3, it’s clear they’re going to chase their connection as far as it goes, consequences be damned. And we’re right there with them, hoping for the best.”

Hacks is headed back to the stage at Max.
The streamer has ordered a fourth season of the Emmy-winning comedy starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. The renewal comes on the day Hacks concludes its nine-episode third season (just under the wire for Emmy eligibility this year).
“We congratulate Hacks’ brilliant cast and crew, and our partners at Universal Television. Hacks is a masterfully crafted comedy delivering laughs and sharp insights about the vulnerability and joy of sharing a dream,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of Max original programming. “The creative team behind this singular show is not only brilliant but also a joy to work with. We couldn’t be happier to give viewers another season with Deborah, Ava, and the rest of the Hacks family.”
Season three took a long road to its premiere earlier this month. “To give you an idea of how long we’ve been working on this season,...

Let’s start here: watching Bobby Cannavale and Robert De Niro argue on a New York City street while cars angrily beep their horns is electric. Truly exhilarating to watch. Likewise, watching the great Rose Byrne manage multiple emotions on her face is tantamount to listening to Yo-Yo Ma play cello. Ezra, written by Tony Spiridakis and directed by Tony Goldwyn, tells the story of a separated couple’s attempt to raise their autistic son. Max (Cannavale) is a struggling stand-up comedian; his ex, Jenna (Rose Byrne), is trying to keep it all together and not doing well. Their son, Ezra (William A. Fitzgerald), is causing disturbances at his school. Soon he’s forced to go to a specialized school with other “special” kids. Max cannot allow this; neither can his temper. It’s all for Jenna and her lawyer boyfriend (Goldwyn) to do to keep Max from beating up the whole world.

Sometimes, one of the shrewdest things a movie can do is to have its hero act in a way that’s not heroic or admirable or even very likable. In “Ezra,” Max Bernal (Bobby Cannavale), a stand-up comedian with a chip on his shoulder (he used to write for late night; now he performs edgy sets in places like the Comedy Cellar), is in a state of confused fury over what to do about his son, Ezra (William A. Fitzgerald), an owlish 11-year-old who’s autistic. Ezra attends public school in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he acts out, gets bullied, and responds to people on his own brainy but disconnected wavelength. His autistic behaviors aren’t particularly severe. He speaks in arcane pop-culture quotes, he’s scared that metal silverware will hurt his mouth, and he refuses to look you in the eye or allow himself to be hugged.

May comes to a close with a quieter weekend full of odds and ends and nothing particularly wide in terms of studio releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
After a fairly disappointing Memorial Day weekend, the month ends with a number of moderately wide releases. Since most of these new films are smaller, few theater counts have been reported, making it tougher to determine how some of them might perform, though it’s likely that only one will be getting a wide enough release to potentially break into the Top 5. Otherwise, we’re looking at a repeat of the Top 4 with the slightest chance that “The Garfield Movie” might pass “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with few of the new releases targeting family audiences.
The one movie that has the best chance at cracking the Top 5 would probably be Crunchyroll’s latest Anime feature “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,...

Whoopi Goldberg accepted her role in 'Ezra' without reading the script. The 68-year-old actress stars alongside Robert De Niro and Rose Byrne in the comedy-drama film, and Whoopi has now revealed that she jumped at the chance to join the Tony Goldwyn-directed project.Speaking on 'The View', Whoopi explained: "If [Tony] says he’s got something, I don’t care how other people respond to it, I’m there."Whoopi and Tony actually appeared together in the 1990 fantasy film 'Ghost', and the Hollywood star relished the experience of reuniting with the director. The veteran actress didn't have any doubts about committing herself to the project. She said: "The vibe of the film was like, yeah, I want to be part of this. People don’t usually ask me. So, when somebody says ‘Hey, you want to come play?’ It’s like, yes!"Similarly, Tony...

Whoopi Goldberg accepted her role in Tony Goldwyn’s Ezra without reading the script. The actors knew each other from co-starring in 1990’s Ghost.
“If he says he’s got something, I don’t care how other people respond to it, I’m there,” Goldberg said of Goldwyn during Tuesday’s episode of The View, where the actor appeared as a guest alongside Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne.
Goldberg played Oda Mae Brown, the medium who communicates with Patrick Swayze’s spirit, in Ghost (she won an Oscar for the role). Goldwyn was the antagonist, Carl Bruner, and Goldberg said this week he is a “wonderful partner.”
In Ezra, Goldberg plays the manager of Cannavale’s character, a stand-up comedian struggling to co-parent his autistic son. Byrne, Robert DeNiro, Rainn Wilson and others round out the cast. Goldwyn directed the movie, and also has a small part onscreen. The project...

Law & Order Season 24: Everything We Know So Far About the Latest Season of NBC's Iconic Crime Drama

Thursday nights wouldn't be the same without Law & Order.
The flagship cop/legal drama took a hiatus between 2010 and 2021, but it'll be kicking off NBC's Thursday night marathon of crime dramas again this fall.
That means more cases ripped from the headlines, more of Price butting heads with the new Da, and probably more miraculous last-minute wins in the courtroom.
The flagship series hasn't deviated much from the formula that made Law & Order successful in the 1990s. The cops still investigate a case straight out of recent news, usually a murder, and then turn the defendant over to the Da's office to be prosecuted.
Nowadays, there's more diversity in the police and legal sides of the criminal justice system than when Law & Order first began, and there's less ambiguity in the courtroom.

Tony Goldwyn might be more known for his work as an actor, but he’s also prolific as a director, having helmed a few feature films and several TV episodes. Although his latest effort in the director’s chair, the family dramedy Ezra, does suffer from some of its more conventional and melodramatic elements, it’s successful enough in its approach to be a likable, if forgettable, crowd-pleaser.
The movie follows a comedian who sets out on a life-changing road trip with his autistic son after facing decisions that could change both of their futures forever. It doesn’t reinvent the road movie subgenre, but it sets out to deliver a heartwarming and funny family dramedy, and it mostly succeeds in doing so.

Over the last few years, there have been some major shifts in the way those on the autism spectrum are understood. Conditions like autism have been reframed as an asset rather than a disability, due largely to conversations happening in spaces like TikTok. There has even been a vernacular reconfiguration, with the terms neurotypical and neurodivergent coming into wider acceptance as the more inclusive and less historically loaded categorizations.
As with basically all discourse, these positive developments have occasionally fueled actions with bad intent—like neurotypical people self-diagnosing as neurodivergent, essentially for purposes of clout. Enter Tony Goldwyn’s Ezra, which sees itself as a kind of rebuke to films like Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close for at least nominally wrestling with the notion of whether we should raise children to be as normative as possible or fully embrace their divergences.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hacks Season 3, Episode 6, “Par for the Course.”] Hacks welcomed a handful of glitzy guest stars in its latest Season 3 episode, “Par for the Course” as Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) attended the American Television Affiliates Golf Tournament as their campaign for late night continues. Hoping to schmooze the affiliates who could help her land the gig, Deborah is particularly taken with Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn), the CEO of the conglomerate that owns the network Deborah’s show would be on. Turning her attention mostly to him, she dumbs down her golf game to let him win and does all she can to sway things her way, but when she learns that Jack Danby (Luke Cook) is poised to take the late night host gig, she drops the facade and lets Bob get a taste of her real golf game. “She gets very thorny and kicks my ass on the golf course,...

Camryn Manheim is leaving Law & Order, but you couldn’t have known that by watching the show’s season finale, which aired tonight.
Instead of a farewell, the focus centered on Tony Goldwyn’s Da Baxter, with Manheim’s character, Lt. Kate Dixon, barely featured. There was no indication during the show that she would be leaving.
Manheim joined the show as Lieutenant Kate Dixon in the Season 21 premiere, The Right Thing, though she had portrayed smaller roles in seasons 1, 3, and 4. Dixon is currently the commanding officer of the Manhattan North Homicide Squad’s 27th Precinct.
Earlier, a statement was issued to Deadline on Manheim’s imminent departure.
“I thank Camryn for her three wonderful seasons helping us relaunch Law & Order. She is a class act and I wish her nothing but the best for her next chapter,” shared series creator Dick Wolf in a statement.
