“The Crown” concluded its six-season run in December 2023 with Imelda Staunton being the third and final actress to portray the iconic role of Queen Elizabeth II. The English actress took over the gig in Seasons 5 and 6, following Olivia Colman in Seasons 3 and 4, and Claire Foy in Seasons 1 and 2. Both Colman and Foy won Emmy Awards in the Best Drama Actress category for their second seasons as leads, so now Staunton is hoping to follow directly in their Emmy-winning footsteps. (Foy also claimed a guest actress trophy for appearing in a flashback during the fourth season.)
Season 6 of “The Crown” was split into two volumes on Netflix, with the first part focusing on the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) in 1997, and the second part detailing the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in 2002 and the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams) in 2005.

When we think of Michael Gambon’s portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in the iconic Harry Potter franchise, we often visualize him as the wise, enigmatic headmaster of Hogwarts. But behind the scenes, Gambon had a playful side that our beloved Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, had the opportunity to experience firsthand.
Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter | Warner Bros
While the late actor Michael Gambon’s onscreen performance was marked by profound gravitas and a commanding presence, his offscreen behavior was delightful and mischievous. Well, maybe not for Daniel Radcliffe, since he admitted to struggling with his performance, after his inescapably hilarious moments with the legend.

Jim Carter, who famously played Carson the master butler on Downton Abbey, clearly was taken by the leading artist giving a terrifically moving performance as Dolly Gallagher Levi upon the London Palladium stage. “That’s my wife,” he declared during the interval.
Indeed it was. Imelda Staunton was creating a gold-standard portrait of the meddlesome fixer at the heart of the landmark musical Hello, Dolly! created by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart from Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker.
“It’s a brilliant production,” Carter told me.

“The problem is,” he continued, ”I can’t see anyone else on stage. I can only look at her. I’m sitting there going, ‘Wow!’”
Totally understandable, because the other 2,200 members of the audience were falling in love with her as well.

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.

Netflix is back on top. The streamer slightly increased its Emmy nomination tally in 2024, leading all outlets with 107 — up four from last year’s 103, and taking over the top slot held by HBO/Max last year (which dropped from 127 to 91). And Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria was in a celebratory mood when Variety spoke with her on Wednesday morning.
Although Netflix has had bigger Emmy nomination years (its 160 in 2020 is still an all-time record), Bajaria said she was happy to see this year’s tally spread out across 35 different titles, including “The Crown” (with 18 noms), “Ripley” (13), “Baby Reindeer” (11), “3 Body Problem” (6) and “Beckham” (5).
“I’m feeling really proud of so much of the work our creative partners have done,” she said. “Today is really an acknowledgement and celebration of them and all of these incredible talented people and creators we work with. To me, the takeaway is also looking...

The Emmy voters have spoken and this message was not “sent from my iPhoen”: the comedy-drama Baby Reindeer was nominated for Outstanding Limited Series (along with 10 other Emmys). Richard Gadd was also nominated for the role of Donny Dunn, an aspiring stand-up comic whose life is turned upside down after a casual encounter at a local bar.
And while we’re on the topic of dramas, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West each received a royal nod for the historical drama The Crown, which has won 21 Emmys since it first aired in 2016. This year, The Crown racked up 18 nominations across categories. Other highlights include Sofía Vergara’s nomination for her leading role in Griselda — and unlike the grifter he plays in the psychological thriller Ripley, Andrew Scott didn’t con his way into receiving an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of the petty criminal Tom Ripley.

Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will be making a lot of pleasant phone calls today after the streamer landed 107 Emmy nominations across 35 different shows.
It’s not the streamer’s biggest nomination haul — that was 160 in 2020 — but it put it firmly in the lead with FX coming in a surprise second with 93 nominations, higher than HBO and Max.
There were sizeable hauls for British shows Baby Reindeer and The Crown, and Ripley, which it picked up after it had been produced, but Bajaria is most pleased about the diversity of its nominations.
Shows such as All The Light We Cannot See, Blue Eye Samurai, The Gentlemen, The Greatest Night In Pop, Griselda, Love on the Spectrum U.S., 3 Body Problem and The Upshaws were all recognized, highlighting its “breadth” of programming, according to Bajaria.

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. In Jk Rowling’s neatly woven, magical realm of Harry Potter, where spell-casting and dark arts intertwine, Daniel Radcliffe who played the titular character, shared the screen with some of the most formidable actors in cinema. From Alan Rickman’s menacing Severus Snape to Gary Oldman’s noble Sirius Black, Radcliffe has witnessed the captivating talents of these legendary figures.

However, despite Rickman and Oldman’s legendary performances, Daniel Radcliffe couldn’t help but admire one Harry Potter star, the most. It was none other than Imelda Staunton, the actress behind the infamous Professor Dolores Umbridge, for whom Radcliffe’s admiration reached new heights.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, less than a week out from nominations, we discuss possible shockers.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back for the final time in Phase 1 before Phase 2 becomes all about how many different ways we can say “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and “Baby Reindeer” are favored to win big in, respectively, the drama, comedy, and limited series categories. I’ll miss these lazy months of informed speculation when I could convince myself that Chloe Guidry and Archie Panjabi are legitimate contenders for Emmy nominations for their striking work on “Under the Bridge.” We made our “final” 2024 Emmy nominations predictions this week and what stood out to me in the aftermath is how little we had in the way of disagreement. It feels...

Earlier this year, “Succession” garnered a whopping 15 Primetime Emmy nominations: a bid for Best Drama Series and 14 for acting. The HBO show from Jesse Armstrong became not just the most-nominated drama of the year but the most recognized show that year, while the 14 acting bids tied its own record from the previous year.
But how about this year? Does any show have a chance of getting close to the dizzying heights of “Succession?” Well, probably not. But we’ve combed through our odds chart to work out which of the shows in contention for Emmy nominations will garner the most bids. We’re going to go through drama, comedy, and limited series/TV movie separately and here we’ll start with drama. Below, we ranked our predicted Best Drama Series nominees in order of least predicted total nominations to most.

Exclusive: Imelda Staunton, swathed in glamorous red taffeta, descends a staircase on the London Palladium stage to lead a line of eager waiters in a chorus of “one of our favorite songs from way back when” from Hello, Dolly!
”Let’s reset,” a production assistant’s voice suddenly booms over the pubic address system.
We’re at a rehearsal run-through of a brand-spanking-new revival of the classic Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart musical adapted from Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker, starring an outstanding Staunton as Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi, a widow who over the course of just one day emerges from grief to rediscover life again.
The show started previews last Saturday where it was rapturously received, but the creative team knows there’s still work to do before official opening night July 18.

The 2024 Emmy nominations announcement being just one week away means that Gold Derby users have been shaping the odds in the 12 main acting races for over five months. At the end of June, eight of the initial dozen frontrunners could be credited with maintaining their top positions all season, but the same now applies to only six of them, all but one of whom are men.
The lone female February frontrunner left standing is Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), whose victory on her second consecutive drama supporting actress bid seems quite assured. As of this week, she is generally expected to be joined in the winners’ circle by two-time comedy lead champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who started the season on top before being usurped by Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) a few weeks in. Now, two months after winning the favor of our Top 24 Users, Smart is every Gold Derby predictor subgroup’s first choice.

From Lord Of The Rings To Vikings, Here Are The Top 5 Shows To Watch After House Of The Dragon(Photo Credit –YouTube)
After Game of Thrones ended in 2019, fans were quick to look for other similar shows like the historical drama because the essence of thrilling quests for power and memorable characters were indelible until HBO announced the release of its prequel series, House of the Dragons.
The spin-off series set nearly two hundred years before Game of Thrones has recently released its second season, which follows the Dance of the Dragons, a Targaryen family civil war. The series stars Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and other actors who play the roles of the main Targaryen family and other houses in the show. As the notable mark of Game of Thrones has worn off, fans are eagerly hooked on its spin-off series. However, have begun to search for other...

Renowned British filmmaker Mike Leigh believes that if the subjects of his 2018 historical drama “Peterloo” were alive to see the upcoming U.K. general elections they would be “not only horrified but mystified” about “people procrastinating about whether to vote and seeing justification in not voting, which is what’s happening right now.”
While in conversation about his career with Chief Executive of Film London Adrian Wooton at the Mediterrane Film Festival, the director emphasized that his retelling of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 is a film “about democracy” and felt it was vital to highlight the importance of voting ahead of the elections.
Speaking on his period films, which include “Peterloo,” 2014’s “Mr. Turner” and 1999’s “Topsy-Turvy,” Leigh said those were “the only times where I’ve been able to get bigger budgets.” “What I failed to do and continue to fail to do to this day is to get...

Disney’s “Star Wars” shows have delivered plenty of Emmy nominations so far, with the likes of “The Mandalorian,” “Andor,” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” all garnering bids at their respective Emmy ceremonies.
“Ahsoka” is looking to join these shows by securing Emmy bids of its own and lead star Rosario Dawson looks to be the show’s best chance at a nomination. “Ahsoka” is a continuation of the animated series “Rebels,” and follows Dawson as former Jedi padawan-turned-rebel Ahsoka, who is trying to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi). The role of Ahsoka was originated by Ashley Eckstein, who voiced her in both “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels.” Dawson then took over the role in live-action form when she appeared in one episode of season two of “The Mandalorian” as well as an episode of “The Book of Boba Fett.”

A galaxy far, far away keeps getting bigger and bigger thanks to Disney+ expanding the “Star Wars” franchise with several TV shows, such as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka,” to go alongside their film output. As such, “Star Wars” fans have gotten used to seeing actors from the franchise popping up at various awards shows — either for “Star Wars” projects or for other works. Giancarlo Esposito was Emmy-nominated for his villainous work in “The Mandalorian,” for example,” while last year’s Best Drama Actor Emmys lineup included Mando himself, Pedro Pascal, who was cited for “The Last of Us.” With this in mind, here are eight “Star Wars” actors who could be nominated at this year’s Emmys.
Rosario Dawson — “Ahsoka”
Dawson will be looking to secure a nomination for her work in “Star Wars” itself. She plays the live-action version of Ahsoka Tano, a fan-favorite character who originated in the...

“The Crown” has been a consistent Emmy contender since its first season debuted on Netflix in 2016. Last year, its sixth season premiered on the streaming service, bringing the drama to a conclusion once and for all. We expect this season to be a big hit with Emmy voters once more and several stars could benefit from that attention, including Queen Elizabeth actress Imelda Staunton.
Staunton took over the role from Olivia Colman, who in turn inherited the character from Claire Foy. Staunton joined the show in season five and, in season six, she provided her best performance as Queen Elizabeth yet. This season takes place between 1997 and 2005 and depicts the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), the premiership of Tony Blair (Bertie Carvel) as Prime Minister, and the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams). Critics agree, Staunton is excellent again as she leads the line as Queen Elizabeth.

Harry Potter’s Imelda Staunton aka Dolores Umbridge has revealed her secret to her 40-year marriage with husband and Downton Abbey co-star Jim Carter. During a recent interview with British Vogue, the 68-year-old actress opened up about how she and Carter prioritize their life together over their career.
She expressed, “Success means working. Success is a really tricky word, and it should be spelled with a very small S. I think it poisons people. I feel Jim and I have made our lives work as a marriage within this business, and we take our life more seriously than our jobs.”
The Harry Potter alum continued, “Of course, we both take [the job] very seriously. But you go, ‘What’s the most important thing here? That I play another part? Or that we go on a very nice holiday,...

Who would have imagined that in a show where a queen reigns supreme, the issue of pay equity would take center stage off-screen? For instance, the gender pay disparity in the historical drama series The Crown, which centers on Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, is not unusual in the entertainment business.
Claire Foy, who donned the mantle of a young Queen Elizabeth II, initially faced an unsettling pay disparity. Revelations from the co-executive producer uncovered that the actress was paid less than Matt Smith, her co-star. However, insight from Variety highlighted the producer’s strict rule to balance the scales, acknowledging that the House of the Dragon star did make “more due to his ‘Doctor Who’ fame, but that they would rectify that for the future.”

No matter how popular a clothing style may be in the world of high fashion, trends are made to come and go. This Emmy season has costume designers doing the work of interpreting those trends for a new era.
Palm Royale tracks the fashion of one woman trying to fit in with the high society of 1960s Palm Beach, where she seems to often just miss the mark. The Crown gives the Queen a bolder color palette and a look of defiance for one final send off. Taking cues from painters of the 1880s, The Gilded Age builds on a framework of fashion trends from multiple decades.

For costume designer Alix Friedberg, Palm Royale presented a great opportunity to explore the innovative fashion of the time. “They call it the fashion revolution for a reason,” she says. “The late ’60s was a very flamboyant time, and there was...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, with ballots out and voting underway, we’re taking a look at drama.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Emmy voting is happening right now and we’re here to continue the conversation we started Thursday about the 2024 ballots — this time focused exclusively on the drama categories. No big surprises here, unless you count Alexander Skarsgard not being submitted for guest actor on “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” a “big surprise,” but this year’s submissions helped clarify that the race is really simply a battle between three shows with one huge frontrunner well ahead. In fact, as you mathed out for us, if “Shōgun” hadn’t moved here from the limited series race, the drama lead acting races would be stuck with...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has more A-list actors than any other major franchise in Hollywood, making stars of newcomers such as Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, and Tom Holland while also weaving in veterans such as Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, and Cate Blanchett. The sheer amount of talent on display across the MCU’s many movies and TV shows means that, naturally, the MCU has its fingers in every awards show pie. In other awards, you’ll always find an MCU alum or two nominated at any major awards ceremony. So, speaking of that, here are eight MCU actors past and present we think will be nominated for an Emmy this year.
Donald Glover — “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”
Okay, so admittedly Glover isn’t the first name you think of when you conjure up MCU actors, but he did feature in a scene with Holland’s Spider-Man in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as Aaron Davis,...
