Fans of Western movies are in for a treat as Prime Video India has added the legendary Dollars Trilogy, starring Clint Eastwood, to its streaming library. The trilogy, directed by Sergio Leone, consists of three films: A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). The films are widely regarded as the best examples of the Spaghetti Western genre, which refers to Westerns made by Italian filmmakers in Spain.
The trilogy follows the exploits of a mysterious gunslinger, played by Eastwood, who is known as the Man with No Name. He is a master of the quick draw and a man of few words, who often finds himself in the middle of conflicts between rival factions, bounty hunters, and outlaws. He also has a knack for finding hidden treasures and getting into trouble.

Giuliano Montaldo, the prolific Italian director, actor and film industry executive, whose works comprise powerful political drama “Sacco and Vanzetti” about the Massachusetts trial and execution in 1927 of accused Italian anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, has died at his home in Rome. He was 93.
His death was announced Wednesday by his family and reported by multiple Italian media outlets. No cause of death was revealed.
Born in 1930 in Genoa, Montaldo was still a Turin university student when, in 1950, director Carlo Lizzani gave him a role in the film “Achtung Banditi!.” Montaldo then moved to Rome in 1954, where he worked as a journalist for Italian newspaper Il Tempo and after a few years decided to pursue a filmmaking career.
Montaldo cut his teeth as a director working as an assistant to Lizzani and then to Gillo Pontecorvo, Sergio Leone, and Francesco Rosi, learning the ropes from some of the masters of Italian cinema.

For nearly a century, the Western genre has been captivating movie-goers with gun-slinging cowboys who traverse the Wild West. As time progressed and societal norms shifted, so too did the western films of each era. They began to act as windows into contemporary culture rather than reflections of past eras. Western movies have become beloved staples in cinema and continue to thrill viewers today with their daring adventures set against grandiose landscapes.

This is going to seem like an article about John Wells’ dad. It’s not, exactly, though the Baltimore rapper would probably be content if it was. While his recent album, The Apprehension of John Wells, is self-titled, it’s deeply indebted to his father, Richard Thomas Scible, known better as Rick or Ricky, who died on July 6, 2020, after a bout of drug and alcohol withdrawal evolved into kidney and liver failure. Though he had been receiving dialysis in the weeks before, once Scible’s insurance opted out of continued coverage for the treatment,...

A sting operation results in FBI agents arresting arms dealer Diego Montalban (Noel Gugliemi). He is escorted onto a plane by armed federal officers, although a freak storm causes the flight to crash-land onto the titular island. As the plane-crash survivors separate into factions and grapple with the mysterious island’s inhabitants, the spectre of the TV series Lost looms over the film. As Epix morphs into MGM+ today, its leader is preparing to deliver an expanded slate of originals under Amazon’s ownership.
The top-to-bottom rebrand of the service that debuted in October 2009 coincides with the Season 3 premiere of “Godfather of Harlem,” which has become one of MGM+’s signature shows. Beyond that, MGM+ Head Michael Wright tells Variety the plan is to increase the streamer’s volume to at least eight original series a year.
Last week during MGM+’s session at the Television Critics Assn. press tour, Wright revealed a development slate that includes an adaptation of the MGM film “Hoodlum” from Chris Brancato (who’s also behind “Godfather of Harlem”); a take on the novel “The Emperor of Ocean Park” from John Wells Prods.; post-apocalyptic thrillers “Earth Abides” and “Ark,” also both based on books of the same name; and the comedy “American Classic,” starring Kevin Kline and Jon Tenney.

A big welcome to the new disc company Radiance! This first CineSavant Radiance review is a knockout political drama from Italy’s Elio Petri, with one of the best performances ever by Gian-Maria Volontè. Model factory machinist Lulù Massa offends his peers on the assembly line with his individualistic egotism. An injury on the job makes him a focus for Unionists and student radicals. Petri’s warmly humanist picture is also blunt in its outlook — our imperfect hero is adrift in an unsatisfactory system, and the politicals’ agenda isn’t helpful either. It’s compelling filmmaking, co-starring Mariangela Melato and driven by an excellent Ennio Morricone music score.

Hailing from Aaron Sorkin, "The West Wing" more than solidified itself as the benchmark for on-screen representation of life in the White House. From its snappy dialogue scenes to the culturally relevant themes, the series handled the volatile sociopolitical landscape with grace. A big part of what made "The West Wing" work so well is the ensemble cast that filled it out. Led by Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet, the series went as far as its actors could go, which was very, very far. And, as it turns out, Sorkin and co. had a rule when it came down to casting the main crew.
Looking back at "The West Wing," every casting choice seems like a no-brainer. Allison Janney is irreplaceable as C.J. Cregg, while John Spencer is career-defining as Leo McGarry. The rest of the supporting cast feel intrinsically connected to their characters as well. Even Rob Lowe...

When the Covid-19 pandemic first started, people suddenly had a tremendous amount of time on their hands to comb through their streaming subscriptions. This viewing manifested itself in two distinct ways. Either people retreated into the movies and television shows they have already watched countless times, or they saw this as an opportunity to watch all the stuff they had been meaning to watch for years but hadn't gotten around to. I found myself in the latter camp, and in a quest to watch something about political competency in a time when the country's leaders were anything but, I decided to watch Aaron Sorkin's "The West Wing" for the first time.
It was exactly the balm I needed. I know it's unrealistically idealistic about how government operates. I know it is a neoliberal fantasy. I know there are so many problematic things in it regarding race, gender, and religion.

Today, Academy Award-winning writer Aaron Sorkin is known for creating complex characters who steal the hearts of viewers with witty dialogue and inspiring speeches. He's the man behind Jack Nicholson's declaration, "You can't handle the truth," and Will McAvoy's assertion that "America is not the greatest country in the world anymore." These days, Sorkin's ability to entertain an audience with the everyday lives of sportscasters, news anchors, and senior White House staff is above reproach, but that wasn't the case 24 years ago.
Since 2016, the world has been keeping a very close, no-nonsense eye on the political landscape, and The White House, but not so long ago it was all considered a big joke. In January 1998, the world was shaken when The Drudge Report revealed that President Bill Clinton was having an affair with a young White House intern, Monica Lewinsky. The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
When creator and showrunner Molly Smith Metzler set about adapting Stephanie Land’s memoir “Maid” into a limited series, she had one task above all: Don’t make it sad. “Maid” documents one woman’s struggles with domestic abuse, homelessness, and child support, and while it’s often difficult to watch, Metzler wanted it to be a full emotional journey.
“When we took [the show] out as a pitch, I started by saying, ‘This is not going to be sad,” Metzler told IndieWire via Zoom. “‘We are not going to bum you out. We are going to take you on a ride, it’s going to have highs and lows, but it’s going to be honest. It’s going to be really true.

Best Limited/Movie Directing Emmy 2022: Mike White (‘The White Lotus’) vs. Danny Strong (‘Dopesick’)
At this year’s Emmys, the programs nominated for Best Limited/Movie Directing are similar to the corresponding writing category with “Impeachment: American Crime Story” being replaced by a second episode of “The Dropout.” Just like writing, this race is once again looking like a fight to see whether Mike White for “The White Lotus” can sustain the momentum after the season airing a year ago, or if Emmy favorite Danny Strong for “Dopesick” can steal his thunder.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Directing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“The White Lotus” (Mike White) – 7/2 odds
“Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong) — 4/1 odds
“Station Eleven” (“Wheel of Fire” by Hiro Murai) — 9/2 odds
“Maid” (“Snaps” by John Wells) — 6/1 odds
“The Dropout” (“Iron Sisters” by Michael Showalter) — 13/2 odds
“The Dropout” (“Green Juice” by Francesca Gregorini) — 7/1 odds

A number of stars doing double- and triple-duty on series have been rewarded for their off-camera work with writing or directing Emmy nominations this year, notably “Ozark’s” Jason Bateman, “Abbott Elementary’s” Quinta Brunson, “Barry’s” Bill Hader and “Only Murders in the Building’s” Steve Martin.
Meanwhile, indie film helmers are finding a warm welcome, with drama series directing noms going to Karyn Kusama for the pilot of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” Lorene Scafaria for the “Succession” episode “Too Much Birthday” and Cathy Yan for “The Disruption” installment of “Succession.”
Oscar winner Peter Jackson may add another trophy to his case. He earned a directing nomination for documentary/nonfiction program for his work on Disney+’s Beatles docuseries “Get Back.” Ben Stiller is up for Apple TV+ drama “Severance” and Bo Burnham is back with a nom for directing Jerrod Carmichael’s HBO standup special “Rothaniel.” Amy Poehler’s...

There are 136 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Directing, which will yield six nominations. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), while the other nominees were “Hamilton” (Thomas Kail), “Mare of Easttown” (Craig Zobel), “Wandavision” (Matt Shakman), “The Underground Railroad” (Barry Jenkins) and two episodes of “I May Destroy You” (Sam Miller for “Eyes Eyes Eyes Eyes” and Miller and Michaela Coel for “Ego Death”).
For six of the last eight years, the Best Limited/Movie Directing category has rewarded directors who helmed the entirety of their limited series. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. "It's going to take a miracle to get us out of here." Signature Entertainment has debuted this official UK trailer for a war movie called Operation: Wolf Hound, from filmmaker Michael B. Chait. This already got a direct-to-video release in the US a few weeks ago, but we're just catching up with it. Inspired by the real-life German special operations unit Kg 200 that shot down, repaired, and flew Allied aircraft as Trojan horses, Wolf Hound takes place in 1944 Nazi-occupied France and follows the daring exploits of a Jewish-American fighter pilot named Captain David Holden - played by James Maslow. Ambushed behind enemy lines, he must rescue a captured B-17 Flying Fortress crew, evade a ruthless enemy stalking him at every turn, and foil a plot that could completely alter the outcome of World War II. After scoring its first Best Limited Series Emmy win last year with “The Queen’s Gambit,” Netflix is hoping for a repeat victory with “Maid,” a 10-part drama based on the memoir of the same name by Stephanie Land. The series stars Margaret Qualley as Alex Russell, a young mother who leaves her abusive partner and attempts to start her and her daughter’s lives anew. Qualley recently reflected on the experience of making the show during a 2022 Emmys FYC panel hosted by Variety’s Jenelle Riley along with castmates Andie MacDowell and Anika Noni Rose, executive producer/showrunner/writer Molly Smith Metzler, cinematographer/director Quyen Tran, and executive producer/director John Wells. Welcome to Ground Zero for ‘Committed Cinema’ Italian style. Director Giuiano Montaldo filmed his dream project on location in Ireland and a bit in Boston, with top stars Gian Maria Volontè and Riccardo Cucciolla. In one of the highest-profile American ‘media’ trials ever the famed immigrants Sacco and Vanzetti were tried for a crime but convicted by politics: even the judge asserted they were guilty by definition. Montaldo shows how wrongly justice can be served without whitewashing the defendants. UK actors Cyril Cusack and Milo O’Shea up the performance level, and the Ennio Morricone / Joan Baez songs have kept the film alive.

The good news is that Kino’s new 4K encodings of Sergio Leone’s first two Italo ‘Dollars’ oaters look terrific, with Fistful showing a lot of improvement: the basic restorations are from prime Italian film elements. And the packages are collector / home theater enthusiast friendly — standard Blu-ray encodings are part of the deal. As the films are still licensed from MGM, they include the extras from 2007 of which we’re very proud. The end results may be the first Leone disc release that makes this viewer ‘The Man with No Complaints.’ Don’t forget, they’re separate purchases.

This debut feature of muscleman favorite Reg Park is one of the better sword ‘n’ sandal epics; it has good action and a terrific villainess in Fay Spain. The okay story is Benoit’s L’Atlantide, re-shaped to fit the fad for all things Hercules. The Film Detective’s disc is the Woolner Bros.’ American release, trimmed by half a reel and given an entirely new audio mix. It’s still an impressive show.

This new 4K Uhd release of the film by Studiocanal on Blu-ray means it has never looked better - a reminder, if it were needed, of why having a disc to keep remains a joy in an increasingly streaming-geared world.
Another reminder of the joy of discs is the set of extras - which are plentiful and detailed. Although this film has been released on Blu-ray before, it has an extra, substantial extra of The Perfect Circle, which offers a comprehensive consideration of the film and Melville's workign methods. In particular, it offers an insight into the personalities of those involved - with sparks particularly flying between the Gaullist Jean-Pierre Melville and Communist Gian Maria Volontè, who clashed so hard Volontè almost quit the film and had to be persuaded back to the set by Alain Delon. It’s a perfect movie for a dark time: Carlo Levi’s famed novel about a political undesirable became a major Italian miniseries by the great Francesco Rosi, starring the now-legendary Gian Maria Volontè. In Mussolini’s most popular years of make-Italy-great-again Fascism, a dissident is given an indefinite ‘time out,’ an exile to a small town in a corner of the country so remote and primitive that not even Christianity could fully change it. He expects nothing but receives revelations about his country, his life and one’s place in society. It’s meditative, it’s illuminating, it’s like a book one can’t put down. It’s also uncut, as opposed to the theatrical version that made a splash here in 1980, as simply Eboli.

Born 1917, as Jean-Pierre Grumbach, son of Alsatian Jews, Jean-Pierre adopted the name Melville as his nom de guerre in 1940 when France fell to the German Nazis and he joined the French Resistance. He kept it as his stage name when he returned to France and began making films.
Melville at 100 at the American Cinematheque in Hollywood is showcasing eight of his films made from 1949 to to 1972 to honor the 100th year since his birth.

The American Cinematheque has grown tremendously sophisticated since its early days creating the 1960 dream of “The Two Garys” (for those who remember). Still staffed by stalwarts Barbara Smith, Gwen Deglise, Margot Gerber and Tom Harris, and with a Board of Directors of Hollywood heavy hitters, it has also been renovated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which has spent more than $500,000 restoring its infrastructure and repainting its famous murals.
