The past couple of years have been a very good time to be a Pavement fan. The Nineties indie rock band emerged from 12 years of hibernation in 2022 for a stellar, worldwide reunion tour that continues to this day. During their downtime, they assembled a fantastically bizarre jukebox musical based on songs from their catalog, and they promoted it with a trippy pop-up Pavement museum.
As plugged-in Pavement fans knew, all of this activity was captured by filmmaker Alex Ross Perry for a movie, Pavements. It’s premiering at the Venice Film Festival,...

The selection for the 81st Venice Film Festival (Aug 28-Sept 7) was unveiled today by festival president Pietrangelo Buttafuoco and artistic director Alberto Barbera.
Screen International rounds up the key talking points from this year’s line-up, including the return of stars, the lack of streaming titles and a slight improvement in the number of female directors.
Stage is set for the return of A-list stars
This year’s edition more than makes up for 2023’s strike-hit festival. A-list stars including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce,...

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” follow-up transports audiences back in time.
Guadagnino’s “Queer,” written by “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985-published novella, stars Daniel Craig as an American expat and war veteran who begins a romance with a younger man (Drew Starkey). The film, as expected, will debut in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and of today’s surprises was the confirmed casting of pop star Omar Apollo with a top-billed role in the film.
“Queer” follows William Lee (Craig), now in his late 40s and in 1940s Mexico City, reminiscing about his past life among American expatriate college students and barkeeps eking out their own living on part-time jobs and GI benefits. Lee ends up chasing a young student named Eugene Allerton. For his novella, “Naked Lunch” writer Burroughs allegedly based the Allerton character on a man named Adelbert Lewis Marker, a discharged...

We’re just about five weeks away from the opening of the 81st Venice International Film Festival, the oldest such celebration of international cinema and the official kickoff to awards season in earnest. A gondola loaded with news about this year’s titles washed up on our shores this morning, and this year’s competition slate is packed.
It’s no surprise that Todd Phillips will bring his “Joker” sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” back to the late-summer Italian event. The first dark comic book film won the top prize there in 2019, slapping a huge international halo on it released to the public, eventually netting Joaquin Phoenix the Best Actor Oscar, as well as a Best Original Score trophy for Hildur Guðnadóttir and nine other nominations, including Best Picture. The full list of titles set for the 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival has been revealed, and it’s another powerhouse lineup — scroll below to check it out.
The venerable event in 2023 took place under the cloud of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevented many stars coming out in support of their movies. With the labor action resolved and this year’s roster now formalized, we can expect a tidal wave of talent to wash over the Lido at the end of next month and into early September.
Many of the films announced this morning by La Biennale President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco and Venice Film Festival Artistic Director Alberto Barbera were widely anticipated, including Todd Phillips’ Joaquin Phoenix/Lady Gaga starrer Joker: Folie à Deux. The Warner Bros sequel arguably is the highest-profile movie of the competition bunch, coming five years after Phillips’ Joker won the Golden Lion before going on to 11 Oscar nominations,...

The Venice Film Festival on Tuesday unveiled its official, star-packed lineup for its 81st edition, which runs from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7.
Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips’ sequel to his 2019 Golden Lion-winning Joker, will also bow in Venice. Joaquin Phoenix, who won a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, in the original, returns in the musical sequel, with Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn, his love interest and partner in crime. Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener co-star.
Venice favorites Brad Pitt and George Clooney will return to the Lido with Wolfs, an action drama from Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) about two lone-wolf fixers assigned to the same job. The film, an Apple Original Films production that Columbia/Sony will release theatrically worldwide, will screen out of competition, as will Broken Rage, the latest feature from legendary Japanese director Takeshi Kitano.

Jeopardy! fans are sounding off over one of the clues from the July 3rd game, as host Ken Jennings ruled against one player’s initial answer. The match which saw one-day champion Kelly Proulx take on Sarasota-based attorney Dana Keane and Burbank-based customer support team lead Isaac Hirsch, raised eyebrows with the $800 clue in the category “Don’t Go, Jason.” The clue read, “Playing the evil Gideon in this Edgar Wright flick, Jason Schwartzman gets his head kicked in; K-o, Cera Cera.” The correct response was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but Isaac’s initial answer of Scott Pilgrim was seemingly not accepted, leading him to extend the response, saying, “What is Scott Pilgrim…. vs. The Universe?” Ken Jennings for Jeopardy! and Michael Cera in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World “Sorry, no,” Jennings responded before Kelly buzzed in with the right answer. As some may know, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World...

When he learned that Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis had secured a distribution deal with Lionsgate, Giancarlo Esposito was obviously stoked because it meant the highly-publicized passion project would have a chance to reach audiences beginning Sept. 27.
But he “specifically” was very excited for Coppola, who has shepherded the project since the 1970s and wound up putting a chunk of his personal fortune into the $120 million film to eventually make it happen (despite some challenges along the way). “He taught me how to be courageous,” Esposito told The Hollywood Reporter at the world premiere of MaXXXine on June 24. “He taught me to not ever give up, keep following through and put your money where your mouth is; have skin in the game.”

Jason Schwartzman has made a career for himself in both major films and indie darlings. Throughout his filmography, you can see how he goes back and forth, effortlessly, to star in massive films like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and then in smaller, more intimate indie films like the forthcoming “Between the Temples.”
As seen in the trailer, “Between the Temples” tells the story of a cantor who is going through his own mental health struggles.

"Rabbi – if anyone can do it, it will be her." Sony Classics has released the official trailer for Between the Temples, an indie comedy from filmmaker Nathan Silver. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at the Berlin, Tribeca, and Provincetown Film Festivals as well. From filmmaker Nathan Silver comes a tale of a man lost in his own life, unsure of where to go or what to do next. A cantor (starring Jason Schwartzman) in a crisis of faith finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher (co-starring the kooky Carol Kane) re-enters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student. She is converting to Judaism and wants a quick Bat Mitzvah and he agrees to make it happen, while getting closer and closer to her in the process. The film also stars Dolly de Leon,...

We were just remarking a few weeks ago how it’s the summer of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, with the largest-ever U.S. retrospective of the British masters now underway and the Martin Scorsese-narrated documentary Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger coming in July. Now another filmmaker behind what is sure to be one of the most-discussed fall films is paying tribute to the filmmakers.
“Queer will be my most personal film,” Luca Guadagnino tells Cinecitta when it comes to his forthcoming William S. Burroughs adaptation. “It’s a tribute to Powell and Pressburger. I’ve seen The Red Shoes at least 50 times and I think they would appreciate the sex scenes in Queer, which are numerous and quite scandalous.”
Tipped for a Venice Film Festival premiere, Queer marks a reteam with many Challengers collaborators, including writer Justin Kuritzkes, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross,...

Nathan Silver’s Between the Temples is among the most formally adventurous films ever made about a late-in-life Bat Mitzvah––scripted with more narrative and structural surprise than its basic bedrock would ever suggest, shot (by Sean Price Williams) and edited (courtesy John Magary) with jaggedness to match. It’s also a film you can take your parents to, and one that gives ample room for Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane to build an unusual onscreen rapport. Talk about the best of both worlds! If you’ve kept an ear to the ground this year, cinematically-speaking, you’ll likely have heard about Megalopolis – the latest opus from Francis Ford Coppola, long in the making, largely self-funded, and, by all accounts, an absolutely wild watch. The legendary filmmaker behind The Godfather trilogy has spoken for decades about his desire to make a film set in a modern-day America styled like the Roman Empire, as society collapses; this year, Megalopolis finally arrives, with Coppola having poured much of his own wine fortune into its production. After a split reception at Cannes, it’s officially confirmed to hit UK cinemas at the end of the summer.
Having secured a distribution deal, Megalopolis will hit cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 27 September – meaning audiences will get to make their own minds up on whether Coppola’s latest epic is a uniquely unmissable oddity, or a gigantic swing-and-miss.

There have been rumors that Sony Pictures might be developing a live-action Miles Morales movie since the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film swung into theatres in 2019, and last year, former studio head Amy Pascal appeared to confirm that tentative plans were in place.
“You’ll see all of it,” Pascal said when asked about the prospect of Miles making the jump to live-action during a red-carpet interview. “It’s all happening.”
Nothing particularly concrete, but rumors have persisted, and Sony was said to be interested in fast-tracking a Morales feature after the massive success of Into the Spider-Verse sequel, Across the Spider-Verse. Now, it seems we finally have some movement on the project.
According to reliable insider Jeff Sneider on this week's episode of The Hot Mic, the studio is in the process of casting an actor to play Miles in live action. He doesn't mention any potential contenders for the role,...

Lionsgate Studios has signed a deal to distribute Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Megalopolis, fresh off its electrifying debut in Cannes, in theaters in the United States and Canada, it was announced on June 17, 2024 by Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

Lionsgate Studios previously distributed many of the visionary filmmaker’s greatest masterpieces on home entertainment. Lionsgate Studios will also handle the distribution of Megalopolis across all home entertainment platforms.
Megalopolis will be released in domestic theaters and in IMAX on September 27, 2024. Fogelson said, “Francis is a legend. For many of us, his gifts to cinema were one of the inspirations to devote our own careers to film. Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis has finally landed a US distributor, and it’ll hit American cinemas this September. More here.
The journey of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis to our screens is one of the most fascinating film stories of recent times. The self-financing, the reports of chaos on set and then the polarising reviews at initial screenings. It’s all added to the mythology that surrounds the return of Coppola, as he pursues his decades-long passion project in the face of naysayers and convention.
Despite the hullabaloo surrounding Megalopolis, the pieces have slowly fallen into place for the film.
It secured UK distribution a while back and is also set to get an IMAX run too, with the company expressing confidence in Coppola’s vision. European distribution is also in place meaning that one of the few remaining outliers for the project was America.

Despite receiving divisive reactions at the Cannes Film Festival, Lionsgate is ready to risk it for the biscuit with Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Lionsgate is bringing Coppola’s science-fiction drama to theaters in the United States and Canada, says Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. The deal spins out of Lionsgate’s existing relationship with Coppola’s banner Zoetrope Studios after Lionsgate distributed Coppola’s Apocalypse Now Final Cut, The Conversation, The Colton Club Encore, The Man and His Dream, and One From the Heart: Reprise. Megalopolis will be released in domestic theaters and IMAX on September 27, 2024.

At long last, “Megalopolis” is coming to a theater near you.
Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed sci-fi epic will be distributed in the U.S. and Canada by Lionsgate, the studio announced on Monday. The film will be released in theaters and IMAX on Sept. 27.
The deal brings Coppola’s protracted search for a U.S. distributor for his passion project to a close. The legendary director privately screened the large-scale art film for studio chiefs in March and didn’t secure a distribution commitment at the time. The film premiered at Cannes in May, and while international distributors snapped it up, a U.S. deal remained elusive. But now, Lionsgate, which has a long history of distributing indies the Big Five studios wouldn’t touch going back to “American Psycho,” has signed on.

One of the standout animated superhero franchises in recent memory is undoubtedly the ‘Spider-Verse’ series. The first film, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ was a massive success, and its sequel, ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ shattered numerous records.
Released as Sony Pictures Animation’s first global theatrical release since 2019’s ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2,’ the film garnered widespread acclaim and set multiple box office records. Surpassing its predecessor, it grossed an impressive $690.5 million worldwide and ranked as the third-highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 2023.
Both movies in the series have enjoyed immense popularity among fans of all kinds. Confirmation came over six months ago that work on ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ resumed following the resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike. We all know Wes Anderson has his repertoire of actors: Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, and on and on and on. And over the course of his career, they have all grown accustomed to – and perfectly fit – his signature style. But that’s really hard to do early on, when none of this has been established and you’re just trying to get that first film completed. Now imagine doing it while a sometimes short-tempered Oscar nominee watches it all unfold.
Wes Anderson recalled that when making his first movie, James Caan didn’t understand just what this rinky-dink, $5 million production was even going for. “I remember James Caan came to the set of Bottle Rocket, and he was really saying, ‘What are you guys doing?’ We were doing things that he thought, ‘This is not how movies are made,’ but he sort of adapted to us.”

Jude Law has been teasing audiences for decades now. His looks, charm, tenacity, and willingness to channel that success in interesting, unexpected directions have always been admirable. But one of his riskier pivots — perhaps only in retrospect — was David O. Russell’s 2004 ensemble black comedy, “I Heart Huckabees.” Co-starring Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, and many others, the film follows a group of interconnected lives all being investigated by “existential detectives.” Law had admired Russell and, unlike some of Russell’s past players, continues a relationship with the auteur to this day, but knows the film and the process of making it can be viewed with a negative light.
“The experience of making that film was bizarre,” said Law in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “We were all there doing it for nothing, just loving being in each other’s company and playing. I remember fantasizing,...

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from musician turned filmmaker Robert Schwartzman, the younger brother of Jason Schwartzman and part of the larger Coppola-related film dynasty. Schwartzman began his career as lead vocalist of the rock/pop band Rooney. But circa 2014, he shifted towards writing and directing and directed “Dreamland” (2016), “The Unicorn” (2018), and “The Argument” (2020).

Richard Sherman, the youngest sibling in the iconic songwriting duo the Sherman Brothers, has passed away at the age of 95 from an age-related illness.
Richard and Robert Sherman – who passed away in 2012 at the age of 86 – provided moviegoers with some of the great songs in cinema, boosting every Disney or family-driven production they worked on and helping solidify them as classics.
The Sherman Brothers won the Best Original Song Oscar for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from Mary Poppins, earning four other nominations in the category, including the title song for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and “The Age of Believing” from Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Mary Poppins would also land Robert and Richard Sherman the Best Original Score Oscar, a category they received four nods in. Retrospectively, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” was featured on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest movie songs ever.

Richard M. Sherman, two-time Oscar winner who collaborated with brother Robert B. Sherman on the songs for “Mary Poppins,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the enduring Disneyland tune “It’s a Small World (After All),” died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills due to age-related illness. He was 95.
The Sherman brothers worked in a job that no longer exists: inhouse songwriters for a studio. In their case, the studio was Disney, and the brothers were hired for that steady gig after their 1958 song “Tall Paul” was a hit for Mouseketeer Annette Funicello.
In the early 1960s, they penned tunes for Hayley Mills in Disney films “The Parent Trap,” “In Search of the Castaways” and “Summer Magic,” as well as songs for “The Absent-Minded Professor” and “Moon Pilot”; Walt Disney, always aware of synergy, made sure his family comedies had a tune with radio-play potential. When it was released in January of 2001, Richard Kelly's bleak time-travel psychological drama "Donnie Darko" caused a notable stir. The title character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a teen struggling with schizophrenia in 1988, a time when Reagan's great Conservative revolution was drawing to a close and adults clung to suburban conformity as it crumbled under them. Donnie is obsessed with time-travel and regularly hallucinates a vicious, strange anthropomorphic rabbit monster named Frank (all while attempting to socialize at school and foster a romance with a classmate played by Jena Malone). Patrick Swayze appears as a cheesy self-self guru, Drew Barrymore plays one of Donnie's teachers, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie's sister.
By turns psychedelic and weirdly moving (in a Goth sort of way), "Donnie Darko" quickly became a cult hit and rotated directly into the local midnight movie circuit, attracting a wide swath of misfits and night people.

Winner of two Palme d’Ors, Francis Ford Coppola‘s makes a huge return to Cannes with a film that will not go unnoticed in Megalopolis. With the price tag of about 120 Sean Baker features, this Julius Caesar salad (forgive the pun) dishes out a lot of ideas with a mega cast of Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, Isabelle Kusman, Bailey Ives, Madeleine Gardella, Balthazar Getty, Romy Mars, Haley Sims, Dustin Hoffman.

Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion-project, Megalopolis, screened at the Cannes Film Festival last night, and the first reviews for the sci-fi epic have now been shared online.
Depending on which critics you choose to trust, the movie is either a masterpiece, an unmitigated disaster, or somewhere in between!
Despite reports of audiences giving the film a 10-minute standing ovation, reviews have been decidedly mixed, which is represented by an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%.
Only 22 verdicts have been added so far, so this score is sure to change when press screening take place down the line. But with such a polarizing reaction, we don't anticipate it fluctuating too much.
Have a read through some of the reviews at the links below.

Is Francis Ford Coppola’s controversial magnum opus “Megalopolis” any good?
The two hour and 20 minute dystopian drama certainly divided the audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night with its collision course of shocking scenes: a doctored sex tape featuring Adam Driver, Shia Labeouf in drag playing a Trumpian figure and Aubrey Plaza dominating her way through a slew of men.
But there was still a huge amount of respect for iconic director Coppola, who received a four-minute standing ovation upon entering the room. After the credits rolled — which included a tribute to his late wife Eleanor — and the standing ovation began, Coppola hugged Driver and Giancarlo Esposito and got emotional as he made a speech dedicating the film to hope and family.
“Thank you all so much. It is so impossible to find words to tell you how I feel,” Coppola said, then introducing his family members in the audience.
