- Was nominated for Broadway's 2003 Tony Award as Best Original Music Score, his music with lyrics by Didier Van Cauwelaert and English adaptation by Jeremy Sams, for "Amour."
- Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1990.
- In 1966, he created the musical arrangements of the French song "C'est si bon", written in 1947 by Henri Betti (music) and André Hornez (lyrics) for the album "Color Me Barbra" by Barbra Streisand. In 1948, his father Raymond Legrand had led his orchestra for the song's recording by Les Soeurs Étienne.
- One of the few people nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie for the same movie. In his case, it was for the score for "Yentl".
- At 22 arranged and conducted his album 'I Love Paris' which became one of the best selling instrumental albums ever released in America.
- Upon his death, his remains was interred at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France.

- The composer's funeral, at Cathedral Saint-Alexandre-Nevsky in Paris, was attended by French First Lady Brigitte Macron, French Culture Minister Franck Riester, director Claude Lelouch, actor Frédéric Beigbeder, composer Vladimir Cosma and members of Legrand's immediate family. Legrand had been scheduled to appear September 20, 2019 in concert with Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
- In late 50's turned to composing for films and has done over 50 including 'Umberellas of Cherbourg' for which he had 3 different award nominations.
