The Task Ahead for the New U.K. Government – and Why the Culture Secretary Is Not “Minister for Fun”
Within the U.K.’s entertainment industry, as the country soaks up the vast change brought about by a historic general election, there is hope.
Britain’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who takes over from Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak, made few promises during his campaign, but the Labour Party’s Creative Industries Sector Plan, published in March, offered a glimpse into the kind of change these left-leaning politicians plan to make. Among the objectives are a commitment to supporting country-wide growth as well as access to culture. The plan also highlights a need for diversifying audiences and the workforce as well as boosting creative education and skills. However, the new Cabinet — and in particular, the country’s new chancellor, or finance minister, Rachel Reeves — is inheriting a host of financial problems, propelled by an unsteady economy following Brexit, the war in Ukraine war, and lingering ramifications of the pandemic.

The impact of pivotal elections in the U.K. and France this week will be felt across Europe and across the globe. Within the entertainment industry, the results of voting on both sides of the channel are being carefully watched for signs of what seismic shifts in the political landscape — the end of 14 years of Conservative rule in Britain, the potential lurch to the far-right in France — will mean for those across film, television, art, fashion, music, and publishing.
Keir Starmer’s centrist Labour Party won the U.K. election Thursday night by a landslide, securing at least 412 seats in parliament to 121 for Rishi Sunak’s outgoing Conservatives. Whatever the exact size of Starmer’s majority, it looks like the most convincing win for Labour since Tony Blair’s sweep back in 1997 and the worst performance ever for the right-wing Tories in their party’s history, which goes back to the 1830s.

The results are in, and Keir Starmer is on track to be Britain’s next Prime Minister.
The nationwide exit poll, which is not 100% accurate but rarely far off, has forecast an enormous majority for the Labour Party over the Conservatives of 279 seats, a majority that has been predicted by virtually every poll for months.
According to the exit poll, Labour will win 410 seats, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives will take 131 and the Liberal Democrats are in third on 61. There are 650 up for grabs. If the exit poll comes true, the win for Labour will be almost as large as Tony Blair’s momentous 1997 victory. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party is predicted to gain 13 seats, far exceeding expectations, making it the country’s fourth biggest party.

Robert Winnett will not be joining the Washington Post as editor this fall, amid the fallout following a staff revolt over CEO Will Lewis’ abrupt change in newsroom leadership and reports that have raised ethical concerns over his and Winnett’s previous journalism practices in the UK.
Winnett, deputy editor of The Telegraph Media Group, has decided to stay in London. Chris Evans, the editor of the Telegraph, wrote in a memo to staffers, per the Post, “I’m pleased to report that Rob Winnett has decided to stay with us. As you all know, he’s a talented chap and their loss is our gain.”
In a memo obtained by Deadline, Lewis wrote to staffers, “It is with regret that I share with you that Robert Winnett has withdrawn from the position of Editor at The Washington Post. Rob has my greatest respect and is an incredibly talented editor and journalist.

“The Crown” has been a consistent Emmy contender since its first season debuted on Netflix in 2016. Last year, its sixth season premiered on the streaming service, bringing the drama to a conclusion once and for all. We expect this season to be a big hit with Emmy voters once more and several stars could benefit from that attention, including Queen Elizabeth actress Imelda Staunton.
Staunton took over the role from Olivia Colman, who in turn inherited the character from Claire Foy. Staunton joined the show in season five and, in season six, she provided her best performance as Queen Elizabeth yet. This season takes place between 1997 and 2005 and depicts the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), the premiership of Tony Blair (Bertie Carvel) as Prime Minister, and the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams). Critics agree, Staunton is excellent again as she leads the line as Queen Elizabeth.

Farcical scenes in Britain, where Rishi Sunak’s speech announcing a July 4 election was drowned out by rain and a protester blasting D:Ream hit Things Can Only Get Better.
As the prime minister delivered his address to the nation, he was getting visibly drenched by a spring shower, while he had to fight to be heard over protests outside Downing Street.
A member of the public was playing Things Can Only Get Better, a famous Tony Blair campaign song and likely reference to the fact that there could be a change of government in the UK after 14 years of Conservative rule. Labour is around 20 points ahead in the polls.

Official portraits of royalty or politicians are often very staid and forgettable. That is not the case with King Charles’ first official portrait.
Painted by celebrated artist Jonathan Yeo, the eight-plus-foot-tall work is certainly striking. It features a fine characterization of the king’s face looking benignly down at the viewer. His visage is set off by a sea of red behind him which blends with his uniform, reportedly that of the Welsh Guards, a division of the British Army in which Charles is regimental colonel.
Yeo has painted luminaries such as Charles’ wife, Queen Camilla, British Prime Ministers Tony Blair and David Cameron, Dennis Hopper, Nicole Kidman, Sir David Attenborough, Jamie Oliver and Rupert Murdoch.
He also made a portrait of the king’s father, Prince Philip. “He was a bit of a caged tiger,” Yeo told the New York Times. “I can’t imagine he was easy as a father,...

It is a controversy more befitting of a Real Housewife than a royal princess. On Monday, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, posted a personal message — via the Kensington Royal social pages — to apologize for any “confusion” caused by a Mother’s Day photograph. (In the U.K., Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday of March.) “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused,” the post read. “I hope everyone...

It is any parent’s hope that their children won’t inherit their battles, or at the very least, that they can pass the generational baton with some ground gained. For young Palestinian lawyer and activist Basel Adra, a West Bank native who grew up watching his activist parents fight to protect their land from Israeli occupiers, there has been no such progress: Time has stood dispiritingly still as he has aged into his elders’ shoes. Adra is a resident of Masafer Yatta, a network of Palestinian villages in the southern Hebron Hills, recently subject to an aggressive campaign of demolition and forced transfer by the Israeli army. As his community is literally bulldozed before his eyes, Adra has little scope to do anything but keep his camera on: “I have nothing else, only my phone,” he despairs. That, thankfully, is not nothing. In the shattering documentary “No Other Land,...

‘No Other Land’ Review: A Sobering Doc Chronicles Violent Evictions of Palestinians in the West Bank
One of the many devastating moments in No Other Land, a jolting documentary created by a collective of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers, is a scene of bulldozers demolishing the only school in Masafer Yatta, a rural village in the occupied West Bank.
Right before the machines knock the walls down, a group of school children, locked inside the building by the Israeli military, escape through open windows. The institution — a modest one-story building with alabaster walls — was founded when Basel Adra, one of the film’s primary subjects, was a young boy. His mother and father helped lead the effort, which symbolized community resistance against state violence.
The people of Masafer Yatta built this school together despite multiple attempts to stop them. Earlier in the film, Adra recounts how his mother devised a plan to circumvent the Israeli Defense Forces’ antagonism. She instructed women and children to work at the construction site during the day,...

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach's screenplay for "Barbie" is a little unconventional. Since most of the characters in the movie are either called Barbie or Ken, the script distinguishes between them by referring to them as "Barbie Margot" (referring to star Margot Robbie) or "Ken Ryan Gosling". This name-dropping of actors into the script even extends to the narrator, whose lines are attributed not to "Narrator (V.O.)" but instead, "Helen Mirren (V.O.)".
It's certainly a good tactic if you're hoping to grab the attention of the specific actor you want for a role. Back in 2022, after the first trailer for "Barbie" debuted her voiceover work, Mirren told Vanity Fair that she was "fairly thrilled" to be involved in the film, and also revealed that she shot a cameo scene as herself in addition to recording the voiceover. At the time she declined to say what the scene involved,...

Nordic Honorary Dragon Award recipient Sidse Babett Knudsen said at Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival that she felt “frustrated” when filming HBO’s “Westworld,” particularly regarding the treatment of horses.
“In the U.S., they don’t have a flat hierarchy, which won’t surprise anyone. I would knock on the producers’ door all the time, saying: ‘These horses have been out in the sun for 10 hours, they are going to fucking die,” she recalled. “They are not even working today – get them in the shade!'”
She continued, “As a Dane, I was just looking at the resources, money and logic, going: ‘It’s crazy!’ But, of course, it’s super irritating when an actress talks about horses all the time. How did they react? Not well.”
In the first season of the dystopian series, Knudsen played Theresa Cullen, Westworld’s head of quality assurance. HBO did not immediately...

Notorious former UK government spin doctor Alastair Campbell was pondering legal action against the BBC 20 years ago over its reporting of the controversies surrounding the Iraq War.
News stories have been emerging this week about the premiership of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who Campbell advised, due to the release of archived documents under the UK’s 20-year rule.
In one letter, Campbell wrote to Blair stating: “If the BBC remain belligerent, I think the rhetoric has to be stepped up, up to and including the threat of putting the issue in the hands of lawyers.” The threat went no further, as events took over the situation.
Campbell, who now hosts the hit Rest is Politics podcast, had been setting out the ruling Labour Party’s PR operation to handle the Iraq War, which was being met with stiff opposition.

Part One of season six of The Crown ended with the tragic death of the charismatic Diana, Princess of Wales and the noise around the Queen’s reaction to it. In The Crown, Prince Charles’ insistence was the reason why Diana was given a state funeral as the mother of the future monarch. There was plenty of emphasis on how the death did not just affect William and Harry but also the Queen herself, who had finally let go of the woman who had managed to upstage her.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “The Crown” Season 6, streaming on Netflix now.
The final episodes of “The Crown” have dropped and, as Netflix boss Ted Sarandos pointed out at the premiere of Season 5, that means Google searches will be going up, since many fans like to fact-check scenes from Peter Morgan’s royal drama while they watch.
“This is the story of Queen Elizabeth. This is the story of the royal family. Peter has told and dramatised these stories, some very memorable, some forgotten, judging by the Google activity that happens every time we drop a new season,” said Sarandos at the premiere last November.
Annie Sulzberger, who is head of research on the show, said that if fans spot discrepancies between real events and those on “The Crown,” those are intentional. “This is a drama, and dramatists have to look at history differently,” she told Variety. “These are not inaccuracies.

"The Crown doesn't ask existential questions of itself."
That's what Queen Elizabeth II's (Imelda Staunton) longtime advisor and private secretary Robert Fellowes (Andrew Havill) cautions when the Queen, confronted with yet another round of dismal polls, suggests her team "find out what seems to have gone wrong" and how she "could do better." For decades, the monarch has been reluctant to respond to negative feedback, preferring to keep her head down and wait for things to blow over, but with the ultra-popular Prime Minister Tony Blair (Bertie Carvel) being hailed as "King Tony," she can no longer afford to ignore criticism from the public. After all these years, she says, "I think, finally, I'm ready to hear it."...

The fifth episode of “The Crown’s” final season — and the first entry in the short-awaited Part 2 — is titled “Willsmania” — an awkward, silly name from which the gloomy series derives zero pleasure. How could it? After all, Prince William is still mourning the loss of his mother, Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), even as the English people shift their collective grief for the Princess of Wales into an outpouring of affection for her eldest son. “Affection” may be a bit misleading. Young women and girls scream at the sight of him, gathered behind police barricades, begging for an autograph, photo, or a passing touch. They’re fanatical, and the teen who would be king handles it as best he can, before escaping to the semi-private University of St. Andrews.
“The Crown,” however, rarely shakes its own case of Willsmania. The final season feels more like a set-up for “Will: The College Years...

British writer, poet, musician, actor, and activist Benjamin Zephaniah has sadly passed away at the age of 65, his family confirmed early this morning on Instagram. The widely celebrated figure had been diagnosed with brain cancer only two months ago and, according to Deadline, died surrounded by his family and loved ones. Perhaps best known internationally for his role on the hit BBC/Netflix series "Peaky Blinders," Zephaniah portrayed the fiery street pastor and one of Tommy Shelby's most loyal allies, Jeremiah "Jimmy" Jesus, throughout all six seasons for a total of 14 episodes. The full social media post reads:
"It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the death of our beloved Husband, Son and Brother in the early hours of this morning, the 7th December 2023. Benjamin was diagnosed with brain cancer 8 weeks ago. Benjamin's wife was by his side throughout and was with him when he passed.

Queen Elizabeth has been played by numerous actors over the years — three in Netflix’s The Crown alone. But tracking not far behind when it comes to onscreen depictions of major British figures is former prime minister Tony Blair. Among the names to have stepped into the shiny brogues of the divisive politician are the likes of Damien Lewis, Robert Lindsay, Toby Stephens, James Larkin, Ioan Gruffudd, Stephen Mangan, Harry Enfield and Pierce Brosnan (as a version of Blair in Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer). Michael Sheen has also famously played Blair three times.
Joining this illustrious list is Bertie Carvel, the star of stage and screen who joined The Crown for its final outings in seasons five and six. Marking the end of its reign, Netflix has released the trailer for Part 2 of the sixth and final season of “The Crown,” premiering on Dec. 14.
The series’ final six episodes will focus on Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) and Prince Charles (Dominic West), in addition to the now-older William and Harry, portrayed by Ed McVey and Luther Ford, respectively, in the season’s second half. Notable storylines include Charles’ wedding with Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams) and William’s budding romance with Kate Middleton, played by Meg Bellamy. The first half of Season 6, which premiered on Nov. 16, mainly followed Princess Diana, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki, and the lead-up to her fatal car crash.

The Crown is preparing for the end, and the trailer for the final six episodes brings to life what creator Peter Morgan has told audiences to expect from the hit Netflix drama: A love letter to the Queen.
The final episodes will draw to a close the genre-defining prestige royal saga that has been on screens since 2016, says the logline, and the footage centers around Queen Elizabeth, played by Imelda Staunton, as she battles sentimentality that the royal family is out of touch with the country, while reflecting on her reign as the longest-serving monarch in history and the life she put aside to become Queen.
In a poignant moment that speaks to the late Queen, The Crown‘s monarch says, “I will always be by your side.”
The series paused filming on the final season when Queen Elizabeth II died on Sept. 8, 2022 at the age of 96.

The Crown is preparing to release its final six episodes, and on Tuesday Netflix teased nine photos from the Emmy-winning historical drama’s last hurrah.
The first look photos for the second half of season six — which will mark the end of the hit royal drama — show a grown-up Prince William and Prince Harry following the death of their mother Princess Diana (played by Elizabeth Debicki), and introduces Meg Bellamy as the highly anticipated Kate Middleton. One of the photos is of Kate’s famous see-through dress, which marks the moment she first caught William’s eye when he was in the audience at her 2002 University of St. Andrews charity fashion show.
The first half of the final season consisted of four episodes (which are now streaming) and focused on Diana’s final months, including her overlooked relationship with Dodi Fayed (played by Khalid Abdalla) and their last moments together...

In the years before Twitter was euthanized, I’d patiently wait for the onset of the holiday season, and the renewal in my feed of the great “Love Actually” Debate. Every year, the best and brightest of the world — middle management apparatchiks, underemployed magazine writers and hall of fame doomscrollers — would chime in, mostly on the nein side, and make their arguments with eloquence. My favorite was ‘You’re a fucking idiot.’
That one I heard a lot.
“Love Actually” turns 20 this month, and I thought it was time for a thorough revaluation. Was it still a glorious double-steak overstuffed Chipotle burrito of humanity, or would I now see it as they did — a foot-long Subway sandwich with way too many olives bought at a South Dakota gas station?
So I watched the movie again this week. I was struck with an unearned epiphany, the kind that you find in a middlebrow holiday romantic comedy.

Michael Sheen has, in different points of his career, made a speciality of playing real people. He's been Tony Blair, David Frost and Brian Clough among others. He's adding the disgraced Prince Andrew to his collection with Amazon's new miniseries A Very Royal Scandal, which will follow the events leading up to portraying, the Prince's interview with journalist Emily Maitlis. And with the show set to focus more on Maitlis than Andrew, Ruth Wilson is aboard to play her.
The series is, according to its official description, detailing "Emily Maitlis’ professional and personal journey as a Newsnight journalist, leading up to her acclaimed interview with Prince Andrew."
Tackled about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and his involvement with a huge sex scandal that affected underage girls, it's a sweaty how-not-to be an interviewee. You can :a[see the original interview here]{href='https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtBS8COhhhM' }.
