Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for the first episode of “Yellowjackets” on Showtime.
Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” is back, and viewers who hoped to hear a song from ’90s icon Tori Amos finally get their wish, as music supervisor Nora Felder delivers a tasty treat in the form of the 1994 song “Cornflake Girl.”
Felder replaces former music supervisor Jen Malone, having helped Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” soar up the streaming charts with “Stranger Things” Season 4.
“Cornflake Girl” closes out the first episode. Teen Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) has a hard time saying goodbye to Jackie (Ella Purnell), who froze to death in the Season 1 finale, after the two best friends had a fight, and Jackie spent the night outside in a snit. Shauna, guilt-ridden, spends much of the Season 2 premiere with Jackie’s corpse in the meat shed, talking to her (guest star Purnell talks back).

Bobby Caldwell, the oft-sampled, blue-eyed soul singer behind the late Seventies smash “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
“Bobby passed away here at home,” Caldwell’s wife Mary tweeted Wednesday. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years.”
While no cause of death was provided, Caldwell had struggled with health issues over the past six years, which Mary cited as a result of an adverse reaction to fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Bobby Caldwell, the soulful singer-songwriter who scored a top 10 hit with “What You Won’t Do for Love” and wrote “The Next Time I Fall,” a No. 1 hit for Amy Grant and Peter Cetera, died today at his home in New York City after a long illness. He was 71.
His wife, Mary Caldwell, announced the news on social media, saying: “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years.” She added that his health had deteriorated for more than six years since suffering an allergic reaction to an antibiotic.
Bornon August 15, 1951, in Manhattan and raised in Miami, Caldwell’s parents were singers who hosted a musical/variety TV Show called Suppertime. He was a multi-instrumentalist whose teenage band gigged in Las Vegas before he relocated to Los Angeles, where he became a...

Singer Bobby Caldwell has died at the age of 71.
The news was announced in a post shared by his official Twitter account, containing a statement from Caldwell’s wife, Mary.
“Bobby passed away here at home,” she said. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken.
“Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been ‘Floxed,’ it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love.”
“Floxing” is a term used to describe when a body sustains mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress after taking the antibiotic fluoroquinolone.
Last year, it was reported that Caldwell had suffered a bad reaction to an antibiotic in 2017, which led to a rupturing of his Achilles tendon, and nerve damage.
Caldwell is best known for his 1978 single “What You Won’t Do for Love”, which featured on his self-titled debut album.

Bobby Caldwell, the blue-eyed soul singer best known for his hit single “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
Caldwell’s wife, Mary, confirmed the singer’s death on social media on Wednesday, March 15th. TMZ reports that he had been battling an unspecified illness for several years.
As a teenager, Caldwell moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He briefly played rhythm guitar for Little Richard, but it took six years for him to catch his big break and land a recording deal with Tk Records. “What You Won’t Do for Love,” appeared on his 1978 self-titled debut album, and hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the ensuing years, the song would be sampled by a number of hip-hop and R&b artists, including Tupac on “Do for Love.”

For me, the score or soundtrack is one of the most vital pieces of a film. It doesn't just set the tone for the story — it shapes the way you feel about it. Music can pull you right out of a scene if it doesn't fit or push you over the edge if you're on the verge of tears. It can fill your heart with happiness or punch you right in the gut. Music can also make you feel completely and totally understood.
None of us would be writing for /Film if we weren't compulsive in our love of movies and TV, but of all my obsessions — which also include books and comics — music is the one that I've always had the deepest ties to. I listen to music when I do literally anything. It's my gospel, the altar at which I worship, my lifeline. I truly believe my life...

The Karate Kid has to be one of the most unexpectedly massive franchises of all time. In 1984, John G. Avildsen’s The Karate Kid was a modestly budgeted underdog story (in the Rocky mode) featuring two unknown leads, Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. At the time, Macchio was mainly known for playing the doomed Johnny in The Outsiders, while Morita was known as the wacky Arnold from Happy Days. The 8 million movie would gross 100 million in 1984, and the sequel, The Karate Kid – Part II – would make even more, grossing 115 million and giving us the Peter Cetera classic (to some) “The Glory of Love.”
The franchise would die, for a while, when The Karate Kid – Part III flopped with a measly 38 million gross, while The Next Karate Kid would fare even worse. For the longest time, it looked like the franchise was dead, especially when Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan...

Mimi Cave’s “Fresh,” now on Hulu, is genuinely disturbing.
It’s the story of a young woman named Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who thinks she has found the man of her dreams in Steve (Sebastian Stan), who she meets at a local grocery store. But as she prepares for a romantic weekend away, she discovers who Steve really is – and it’s utterly terrifying. To say anymore would be grounds for imprisonment. But we will say that the movie is a sharp, subversive, and oftentimes very funny look at modern courtship, male/female power dynamics and the wealth divide. It’s a doozy.
TheWrap sat down with “Fresh” screenwriter Lauryn Kahn to ask all the questions you were probably asking yourself after watching.
Spoilers for “Fresh” follow. Watch the film on Hulu and then come back for seconds.

Thanks to big syncs by the Weeknd, Motley Crue and yacht rock icon Christopher Cross, season four of Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” raised the bar in more ways than just its viewership, which propelled the show to No. 1 on Netflix’s English series chart for the two weeks following its New Years Eve release. Extending the storylines introduced in the beloved 1980s film series “The Karate Kid” and featuring many of its original stars, the series continued to find effective musical tie-ins to drive the narratives around 50-somethings Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) as they pursue yet another All Valley karate tournament victory for their dojos.
This time around, the familiar ‘80s metal and soft rock classics were complimented by deeper cuts from those genres, knowing references to cult-classic songs and artists and more contemporary fare simpatico with the daily lives of its many teenage characters. Season four...

It was with the third film that the Karate Kid franchise really lost its way. The 1984 original is a classic underdog sports movie/coming-of-age tale about bullied teen Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) learning to defend himself with the help of wise old handyman Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). The Karate Kid Part II might have been too much of a good thing, but it changed things up just enough by shifting the setting to Okinawa and making the story more personal for Miyagi. (Plus, Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love” from the sequel’s soundtrack?...

It’s been virtually impossible to avoid David Foster for close to five decades. No matter the era, he’s been part of your pop life. Grew up in the Seventies? You probably remember his first hit, “Wildflower,” when he was in Canadian pop-r&b band Skylark; the Tubes’ “She’s a Beauty,” which he co-wrote and produced; and Earth, Wind & Fire’s “After the Love Has Gone,” which Foster co-wrote. From savvy needle drops to actual movie-musical numbers, the movies went pop in a big way in 2019. Well chosen songs provided their respective films with an extra dose of earnest emotion but also served as the less savory soundtrack for stripping (“Hustlers”), murder (“Us”) and even Naziism (“Jojo Rabbit”). There was no shortage of brilliant instrumental scores, too, of course. But here are 15 moments when songwriters or music supervisors — and the directors they collaborate with — stepped up with choices that moved and amused us.

In Jordan Peele’s horror/satire, there’s a fictional voice recognition app called Ophelia that would be ripe for a lawsuit, if civilization somehow survives the doppelganger revolution. Because as the Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker characters are about to meet their violent ends, a demand to “call the police” ends up being heard as a request for N.

By the early 1970s, as the counterculture was dissolving and reconfiguring, there were new pop-star archetypes on the horizon that we still tend to think of — the glam rocker, the sensitive singer-songwriter, the hair-band metal strutter, the prog-rock wizard, the belting pop chanteuse, the punk rocker. But there was another figure of the era who, for a while, was every bit as present but a little less in-your-face, not to mention a lot less respectable: the soft-rock geek, with his too-square-to-be-hip leisure suits and his blow-dried mullet parted in the middle and his caressingly sentimental piano chords and his almost sleazy sincerity. This was, and is, a figure out of a Will Ferrell movie — not “Anchorman” but “Soft Rock Star.” He was Eric Carmen, he was Stephen Bishop, he was Gilbert O. Sullivan, he was the grinning resplendent king of them all, Barry Manilow.

Cobra Kai Season 3 is still far away, likely set for YouTube Premium in the spring of 2020. Taraji P. Henson’s star is in the ascendant – ‘P’ for Penda, for the curious among you. An increasingly familiar face in hit TV shows like Boston Legal, Person of Interest and Eli Stone, Henson has quietly been chiseling away at a Hollywood career for over a decade. It has been an unshowy rise: comfortable in ensemble pieces, she often selflessly lets other more gregarious actors take the limelight away from her.
Not that she hasn’t gone unnoticed by those in the critical know. She’s a multi-award-winner and as executive producer and star of Proud Mary, she is finally an above-the-title name. 30 years ago today, audiences were treated again to the utterly watchable pair of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. The Karate Kid, Part II opened in theaters on June 20, 1986. In the sequel, released two years after the original film, Daniel’s wax on, wax off early training days are behind him, and he’s impressively slicing through six blocks of ice. The boy and his mentor travel together to Mr. Miyagi’s home village in Okinawa, Japan. Sparks fly between Daniel and Kumiko, the niece of Mr. Miyagi’s childhood girlfriend, to the synthesizer-tastic tune of “Glory of Love” by Peter Cetera. The song hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 later that summer and got an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Other notable June 20 happenings in pop culture history: • 1948: The Ed Sullivan Show — then titled Toast of the Town — premiered on CBS. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis performed in that first episode,...

Photo: Radius TWC When I received the Blu-ray for Piranha 3Dd, easily one of the worst films of the year so far (my review here), I sort of laughed, imagining I would never even remove the plastic wrap. Then I flipped it over to see an audio commentary with director John Gulager, producer and co-writer Joel Soisson and co-writer Marcus Dunstan. I've done articles detailing tidbits learned from audio commentaries before such as David Fincher's for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (find that here) and Kevin did one for David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method (find that here). Of course, those were looking at films we tend to take a little more seriously, but I thought this might be fun so what the hell. Listed at 83 minutes the film actually runs around only 70, but Gulager, Soisson and Dunstan are sure to use all 83. Separating the trio out isn't exactly easy,...

When judging modern Christmas movies, a good place to start is with the “hipness” of the film’s music. Danny DeVito does a little hip-hop DJ-ing in “Deck the Halls,” Michael Keaton fronts a touring rock act in “Jack Frost” (his group in the film is called ‘The Jack Frost Band’), and “This Christmas,” while a fine holiday movie, features the great Idris Elba playing passionate, bluesy saxophone in a Jazz club like he’s starring in a Miles Davis biopic. The accompanying vocal track? “Santa Baby.” The new holiday documentary “Becoming Santa” follows this annual Tradition of Wrong with a couple of faux rock Christmas songs that feature “raging” guitar solos worthy of Peter Cetera. If a poor choice in music supervisors was the film’s only trouble, things would be quite merry, but alas, it’s just one on a list of naughty (The Christmas wordplay ends here...

The beauty of iTunes is that you can shop a la carte. The interesting thing is when you purchase an older song and find yourself wondering if anyone else has ever done it before or after you. Let’s use the power of the Internet to find out. List the songs you’d like to think someone else has bought. If you see a track on someone else’s list that you own, let them know they’re not alone. This is a shame-free zone. To prove it, here’s my list:

Glenn Close is not happy about her cameo at the end of a raunchy video made by a high-ranking Navy commander. Her publicist released the following statement to the Washington Post:
"I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor. The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result of a seemingly innocent request of me during a visit to the aircraft carrier over four years ago."
Videos featuring homophobic slurs and simulated masturbation, feces consumption and anal probing were made aboard the USS Enterprise several years ago by Capt. Owen Honor, who was relieved of his command on Tuesday. They surfaced Saturday in a report released by the Virginian-Pilot.

The remake of The Karate Kid is getting a sequel. The Jackie Chan-Jaden Smith film raked in so much money at the box office this weekend (over $56 million) that Columbia Pictures has already started planning for a second film. A sequel to a remake - come on Hollywood, seriously? That’s just a diagram for how to be extra unoriginal. We might sound bitter, but that’s just because if there’s anything we love more than the original Karate Kid, it’s the sequel where Mr. Miyagi takes Daniel Larusso to Okinawa to school him in the way of tea ceremonies and unrequited love, all of which is set to Peter Cetera’s smash hit “Glory Of Love”. When it comes to show titles, few rival Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! for both pure absurdity and shocking bravado. Great job, indeed. The Adult Swim staple airs a new episode tonight -- well, technically, tomorrow morning at 12:30 a.m. -- and you should probably set your DVR. Sometime collaborator Zack Galifianakis will appear, along with Peter Cetera (yep, that Peter Cetera), for a skit entitled "Little Dancing Man." And to answer your question: Of course you should watch the promo.

Closing credit songs -- it's the last thing you hear as you leave a theater, and can very often influence your opinion of a movie slightly one way or another. Take Avatar as the most recent example -- even if you liked the movie, how incredibly off-putting is it to leave a huge action spectacle to the song-stylings of Leona Lewis' "I See You." (If you're going to make a song that ear screeching, go all out: Get Celine Dion. You already spent $500 million on your movie, another $1 million ain't gonna hurt.)
But there are also really bad movies that can occasionally redeem themselves ever so slightly with a decent closing-credit song -- I don't know how many terrible romantic comedies I see where the closing credit song is actually the best part of the movie (bonus points for blooper scenes, which tend to be the funniest part of...
