John Deyle, who appeared in four Broadway musicals, in more than 100 commercials and as the inept Mr. Science on the first season of Late Night With Conan O’Brien, has died. He was 68.
Deyle died June 22 at his home in Mount Kisco, New York, after a battle with esophageal cancer, his wife, Rebecca Paller, announced.
While auditioning for a role in the musical adaptation of I Remember Mama in 1978, lyricist Martin Charnin told him that he was “all wrong for this show, but we could use you in Annie,” he recalled.
Deyle then made his Broadway debut in March 1979, joining the ensemble of the Sarah Jessica Parker starrer by playing Louis Howe, Fred McCracken and Bert Healy.
He went on to work in the 1980 Broadway revival of Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot, starring Richard Burton, and in the subsequent U.S. and Australian tours of the famed musical that featured Richard Harris in the lead.

There’s a new queen of mean on Easy Street. Taraji P. Henson is set to play the villainous Miss Hannigan in Annie Live!, NBC’s adaptation of the Tony-winning musical that airs in December.
The former Empire star, a three-time Emmy nominee and Oscar nominee, will take on the role of the most unpleasant orphanage proprietor played by Carol Burnett in the 1982 movie version of Annie.
It’s the first casting for the production as the search continues for the musical’s young star.

She likes to drink. She likes to smoke. And she is super sexually aware. The classic newspaper comic strip Broom-Hilda is on its way to the big screen thanks to a Tales From The Crypt producer. Created by cartoonist Russell Myers in 1970, the strip is distributed by Chicago's Tribune Media Services. Broom-Hilda acted basically the opposite of every other female cartoon character of her time. Here's how her official website describes her: Living in an enchanted forest with surrealistic landscapes, the engaging characters of Broom Hilda happily have no connection with reality. Other comic characters are extensions or distortions of reality, but Broom Hilda deals in pure fantasy, making the strip bewitchingly unique. Here in the forest, the inhabitants maintain a standard of madness where total irrelevance is the only relevancy. The strip is simply a loony-bin where what’s said and done often makes no sense whatsoever, much to...

The story of the little red-headed orphan who warms the heart of a billionaire is one of the most famous in all of musical theater history. This is mainly due to the fact it has inspired countless little girls to annoyingly sing. The story has already been given two screen adaptations, one for the big screen in 1982 by John Huston and one for the small screen in 1999 by Rob Marshall. So, instead of Sony trying to adapt a musical that has not made it to the screen yet, they have decided to go to the Annie well once more. But this time the plot, setting, and music have been updated for 2014. The result is one of the most charmless movie musicals I have seen in some time. I knew I was in for trouble when the first scene of the film contains two groan-worthy winks at the audience (something that...

But, in a fun way, and also there's a lesson about love in there too.
However, this story goes back over 130 years through a long and complicated lineage of adaptation and interpretation in various forms of media. So let's take a look back at the history of Annie.

Today we are talking to a remarkably accomplished writer and director who has amassed numerous top entertainment trophies over the course of his long and distinguished career, including multiple Emmy Awards, Tony Awards and even a Grammy - the uniquely talented Martin Charnin. Sharing his thoughts on the forthcoming big screen adaptation of his hit musical property Annie as well as previewing what we can expect from the forthcoming 2014-2015 national tour, Charnin also reflects on the original production of the classic Depression-era musical and analyzes why it remains a continual cultural touchstone for generations new and old while also looking ahead to a potential Broadway production of the sequel, written with original composer Charles Strouse, Annie Warbucks. Also, Charnin touches upon his time as a member of the original cast of iconic musical West Side Story and recounts working alongside legends such as Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents and more.

In theaters December 19th, here’s the brand new trailer for Annie.
Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz).
But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean...

Will Gluck’s remake of Annie might just end up being 2014′s Les Miserables, and with Christmas release already pencilled in, it has every chance of taking the box office by storm as well.
Focusing on an orphan adopted by the wealthy Daddy Warbucks (renamed Benjamin Stacks and a New York mayoral candidate in this updated version of the classical musical), it’s a heartwarming tale and boasts an impressive cast of actors which also includes Rose Byrne and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
This latest trailer features “A Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile”, along with a few modern day changes to some now very dated lines!
We also get to see a lot more of some of the cast members who weren’t featured that heavily in the original trailer, and while many continue to doubt the necessity of this remake, it does actually look a lot better than expected!

Yes, the first trailer for Will Gluck’s modern-day spin on the beloved 1977 musical Annie was… a little jarring. Daddy Warbucks had become a mogul and mayoral candidate played by Jamie Foxx; Miss Hannigan was a trashy blonde with Cameron Diaz’s face who yearned for the arms of George Clooney; the few bars of Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin’s iconic songs we heard bore the unmistakable stamp of Auto-Tune.
But this time around, you’ll know what to expect when you check out the movie’s second full-length trailer — which makes the clip’s pop culture references (there...

At this point, you might be forgiven for feeling a serious case of remake-fatigue. It seems every other film these days is a re-boot or a re-imagining of some beloved classic or other, with very little in the way of originality on display. With the release of its new trailer, however, it seems that it would be inadvisable to dismiss the upcoming new adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Annie, as one of those tedious revisits. This one actually looks kind of awesome.
Annie is a comic book character. Well, a comic strip character, to be exact. Created by Harold Gray in his ‘Little Orphan Annie’ comic strip which debuted in August 1924, Annie was first adapted for radio in 1931, while David O Selznick produced a film adaptation for Rko in 1932. It was not until 1977 that Annie made her first ever appearance on Broadway, however – with its now iconic musical format...

A long time from now (pre-Christmas if nothing goes wrong) a new version of Annie is coming to theaters, and the release of the trailer has been met with virtually unprecedented internet gushing. Just about everyone seems to be falling all over themselves to make sure they are on record cheering for the upcoming film, the trailer itself, and the undeniable cuteness of Quvenzhané Wallis.
It’s all a bit suspicious. Check the trailer yourself below, and let me know what you think, but something strange seems to be happening with the release of this trailer.
First, when is the last time everyone, everywhere had anything to say about a trailer beyond, “Here it is,” or similar? Sure, once in a while you might get something like the trailer for a Marvel movie with some sort of teaser trying to suck you into watching it with vague details about who gets revealed.
