Giamatti was last seen gracing Downton’s many steps in the series’ 2013 Christmas special, where he played “free spirited playboy” Harold Levinson.
Update: Universal has now confirmed the release date for the film: 12th September 2025. Back to our original story….
Simon Curtis is returning to direct after taking charge on 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era, while the returning cast includes series mainstays Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Michelle Dockery.

Those who have already binged Bridgerton Season 3 (maybe even multiple times) will have a while to wait before Season 4, but there are several shows that can satisfy the need for elaborate period piece drama in the meantime. Two other shows, The Buccaneers and Dickinson, share the commonality of a modern soundtrack, much like that of the Shondaland show save the string cover element. The Buccaneers also has a debutante scene for young American girls hoping to secure marriages.
Julian Fellowes also created two lengthy period drama shows — Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age — which unfold in an ensemble-style fashion with various families and servant characters having whole plot lines. Gossip Girl will satisfy those missing Lady Whistledown’s columns that balance between journalism and nosiness.

In 2022, the first season of “The Gilded Age” introduced the world to Carrie Coon’s utterly delightful Bertha Russell, an ambitious, unintimidated social climber whose only concern in life in 1880s New York is trying to elbow her way into the upper echelons of society. There were certainly shades to the character back then, especially in her marriage to robber baron George (Morgan Spector) and with her daughter, who is firmly under Bertha’s thumb. But in Season 2, the actress had the opportunity to do even more, breaking through Bertha’s façade to show the vulnerability that underpins her scheming character.
The seeds of this emotional arc are planted at the end of the second episode, when Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane) introduces the Russells to the Wintertons, and Mrs. Winterton is revealed to be none other than Turner (Kelley Curran), Bertha’s lady’s maid who had tried to seduce...

The State of the Race
Before “Shōgun” entered the Outstanding Drama Series race, there was not a demonstrable Emmy frontrunner. Sure, “The Crown” has won before (netting Netflix its first win in the category), but it seems both critics and viewers fled from the prestige period piece’s farewell season.

HBO is welcoming three Tony Award winners and one nominee to New York high society in “The Gilded Age” Season 3.
Phylicia Rashad and Jordan Donica will join the period drama series in recurring roles, while Brian Stokes Mitchell and Victoria Clark will appear as guest stars.
“The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic and social change, when huge fortunes were made and lost overnight,” the upcoming season’s logline states. “With the old guard officially deposed, New York society finds itself turned upside down and all must get their house in order. But even those at the helm of this new era may find that change comes at a cost.”
Rashad will portray Mrs. Elizabeth Kirkland, a woman from a prominent family in Newport with ties dating back to the American Revolution. She has high standards, an occasionally sharp tongue, and is unwilling to compromise the standards...

“When we started season two, we weren’t quite sure where it was going or where it was going to end,” confesses Harry Gregson-Williams about how much he knew of the rich story arcs of the second season of “The Gilded Age.” He and his brother Rupert Gregson-Williams are the composers of the HBO drama series, which he calls a “rich character piece.” Rupert was indeed excited to see how “smaller characters in the first season” would emerge as “major players in the second,” which required new musical cues. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Though the brothers were not fully aware of where the story was heading in the latest batch of episodes, they knew that the score of the show would become “a bit richer” because, as Rupert says, “the Russells are now richer, and we’ve become confident with them and their new role as leaders of society.

After a strike-altered release calendar and the departure of daddy’s No. 1 boy, 2024 was destined to be a strange awards season. Seven of last year’s eight nominees for Best Drama Series are no longer in contention. None of the most recent Primetime Emmy winners are eligible. A new Best Director, Writer, Actor, Actress and more will be crowned. Yet in an often-repetitive TV awards cycle, the excitement typically felt for a fresh field has been tempered by this year’s lackluster yield.
That is, excitement was tempered until a few weeks ago, when a white knight golden samurai rode in to rescue the Emmys.

Before Morgan Spector ever put on the three-piece suit of railroad baron George Russell, he was concerned audiences might feel alienated by the opulence of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
“The vast majority of people just don’t have anything in common with someone like George Russell,” he says. “When I first read these scripts, it was in 2020. Bernie Sanders was still a frontrunner in the presidential campaign, and class politics were in the news. There was a sense that maybe we are tired of billionaires and their power.”
He’s not wrong for wondering just how elastic viewer tolerance would be for 19th century cultural warfare between old and new money. But Spector credits creator Julian Fellowes with recognizing the timeless appetite for sudsy yet sharp historical fiction that places privileged characters and their often-trivial problems in the context of a transformational moment in history. During the show’s second season,...

Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

Fans of Downton Abbey are cordially invited to the third motion picture from Focus Features and Carnival Films. The third entry will follow the recent installment, Downton Abbey: A New Era. The most recent outing from the popular British drama had been released back in 2022. Our own Chris Bumbray would mention in his review of A New Era, “Show mastermind Julian Fellows has written this as fan service, and it shows. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re looking to finally get into Downton Abbey, this is a bad place to start as it not only assumes you’ve seen every episode, but it assumes you know them well. It’s strictly for fans, but I’m willing to bet there are still a lot of those out there.”

Just when you thought it was safe to forget which fork goes with which plate, Focus Features has announced a return to Downton Abbey. Currently titled “Downton Abbey 3” (surely a “Colon Something Something” is coming) this is the third theatrically-released feature film in the franchise that first launched on British television in 2010.
Series creator Julian Fellowes, Oscar-winning writer of Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (a very “Downton”-ish film), is writing the script. Simon Curtis, who directed “Downton Abbey: The New Era” in 2022, is back on board. His other work includes “My Week With Marilyn,” and “Woman in Gold.”
The film will boast Paul Giamatti, reprising the part of Harold Levinson, seen in the fourth season Christmas special from 2013. (That appearance won Giamatti an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor.) Also new to the film franchise are Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. They’re going to need an even bigger dining room table.
Paul Giamatti, Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan are joining the third “Downton Abbey” feature film. Giamatti, who recently scored an Oscar nomination playing an ornery teacher in “The Holdovers,” is reprising his role as Harold Levinson, the bother of Elizabeth McGovern’s Cora Grantham, a part he played in the TV show that spawned the film franchise.
No word yet on who Richardson, Nivola, Beale and Froushan will portray. Nor are there any details about the plot, but this being “Downton Abbey” you can expect silverware to be polished to a high gloss, tables set with military precision and a mad dash to find an adequate number of ladies maids to service all the guests for this or that soiree.
Richardson’s credits include “Nip/Tuck,” “101 Dalmatians” and “Red Sparrow.” Nivola recently starred in...

When we meet some actors in comedies, we form a particular opinion about their acting skills and whatever they are capable of. For example, there’s nothing more suitable for each other than Adam Sandler and romantic comedies. But if you see him playing in Uncut Gems you’ll see that he is much more than you give him credit for.
The same goes about, for example, Emily Blunt. Despite the fact that she has been in a handful of rather serious movies, the first role that comes to mind when thinking about the actress is without doubt her role of Miranda Priestly’s assistant in the Devil Wears Prada.
Yes, she has come a long way since that, earning her an Oscar nomination for Oppenheimer, but there’s a movie with her in a leading role that can be easily chosen as the one where she gave her best performance.

Imelda Staunton will reportedly be absent from the third 'Downton Abbey' movie. The 68-year-old actress played Lady Maud Bagshaw in the first two films in the franchise but she's not expected to reprise the role because of her commitments to London stage production 'Hello Dolly!', which she will be starring in while the project films over the summer. However, Imelda's real-life husband, Jim Carter, will be back as Charles Carson, as will Hugh Bonneville as the Earl of Grantham.A source told The Sun newspaper: “This will no doubt be sad news for Downton fans, in particular those who were endeared by the character of Lady Maud.“But they will draw some comfort from the fact that two of the best-loved central characters will be returning for this third outing.“It still remains to be seen if the producers and writer Julian Fellowes will be...

Editor’s note: Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age writer Julian Fellowes has written a heartfelt salute to his friend and colleague, the producer Ileen Maisel, who died in London on February 16 aged 68.
Ileen Maisel was born in Los Angeles, California, where she was raised. In fact, her father had moved there from Alabama to work in retail sales, so she had no immediate help with a career in show business, but it was clearly enough that she breathed the same air as the great filmmakers of the past and present. It is no surprise to learn that by the age of 15 she was working for the entertainment journalist Rona Barrett.
From then on, she embraced, bathed in, and generally loved the film industry until the end of her life. There was never much doubt as to where she was headed and she was still young when she entered the industry.

Imelda Staunton reveals that plans are afoot for Downton Abbey 3, that might just be shooting before the end of the year.
It looks like the very posh curtains are falling on Downton Abbey, with the news that a third film is set to happen. A third and final film as it happens.
The new film will pick up after the events of 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era. That was the movie that explored the infancy of cinema against the backdrop of notable changes for the characters of the Very Posh House. There had been inevitable questions after the release of that as to whether a Downton Abbey 3 would happen, but now Imelda Staunton has let the cat out of the bag.
Chatting to Zoe Ball on BBC Radio Two, Staunton told Ball that “there will be a final film”. The question came into reports and rumour as to a further movie,...

The story of Belgravia continues in Belgravia: The Next Chapter. The sequel series, which debuted on January 14 on MGM+, is set 30 years after the events of the original limited series created by Julian Fellowes, and it stars Benjamin Wainwright as the grown Frederick Trenchard, Harriet Slater as Clara Dunn, Toby Regbo as Reverend James Trenchard (Frederick’s younger brother), and Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn, Harriet’s sister. The Reverend pays a visit to the Dunn household in the TV Insider exclusive clip from Belgravia: The Next Chapter Episode 3, coming out on Sunday, January 28 at 9/8c on MGM+. In it, the grieving widow Mrs. Dunn (Sophie Thompson) takes a special interest in who James will marry, embarrassing her daughter in front of her crush. But here’s the kicker: Emily doesn’t trust her sister, Clara’s, relationship with Frederick Trenchard, but she has no idea that James is Frederick’s brother.

The lush British costume drama, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, from Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes has undergone a few changes since 2020. The setting is still the posh London enclave of the title, but it’s 1871 — 30 years later — and most of Season 1’s characters have died. The spotlight is now on Lord Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), grandson of the original Belgravia’s wealthy, social-climbing merchant James Trenchard. (Credit: Mark Mainz/Carnival Film & Television Limited/MGM+) Frederick was badly abused by his father, James’ son Oliver. The reason? Frederick’s real father is the cad John Bellasis (Adam James). Never told about his illegitimate birth, the insecure, self-loathing young lord blames his inability to love on his younger brother, James. “James was always the favorite child,” says exec producer Gareth Neame. “That completely destroyed Frederick.” Still, Frederick believes — maybe incorrectly — that ...
