After a somewhat disastrous series of The Great British Bake Off last year, with too-tough tasks and a distinct lack of actual baking, we’re going into the new series with our hopes rising like a fresh-out-of-the-oven bread lion.
For one thing, producers have confirmed that they’re going back to basics with the tasks to let the bakers shine at what they do best
But just as promising is the new presenting line-up: after Matt Lucas chose to leave the show last year, Noel Fielding will now be joined by the wonderful Alison Hammond.
The host of This Morning (and former contestant on Big Brother) has grown a reputation for creating laugh-out-loud viral moments. From her textbook style of bringing the best out of celebrity interviews to her entertaining mishaps, Hammond sprinkles magic over every TV show she appears on. Ah, Ready Steady Cook – you were a product of simpler times. The BBC’s teatime TV cooking show saw two contestants bring along a bag of ingredients, team up with a celebrity chef, (becoming Team Green Pepper and Team Red Tomato) and spend 20 minutes transforming what they’d brought into a tasty dinner.
They only had a maximum budget of £5 (which these days would probably only stretch to half a cucumber and a pot noodle) so the dishes weren’t fancy – none of this nonsense about serving some daft gravy-with-notions and calling it a ‘jus’. No, the likes of Ainsley Harriott or Anthony Worrall Thompson usually just hastily assembled a lasagne, and then the audience voted for a winner – and by ‘vote’, we mean they lifted up a picture of a green pepper or a red tomato.
It was sweet, harmless daytime TV, so when they decided to introduce a celebrity version,...

Alison Hammond’s role as the new co-host of The Great British Bake Off is just, if you’ll pardon the pun, the icing on the cake of a 21-year screen career, which has been filled with some of the most hilarious and surreal moments ever committed to television.
The Birmingham-born star has, over the decades, knocked a sailor into the Thames, had Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling in fits of giggles, and joined forces with Ainsley Harriott to terrorise a woman called Jill in her living room.

When have tabloid rumours been spot on about Doctor Who, and when have they been, er, less accurate?
“Look Who's the Doc's new assistant!” On Tuesday, the Mirror's front page trumpeted an exclusive reveal that Bradley Walsh would be Jodie Whittaker's companion in the new series of Doctor Who.

The one-time Sarah Jane Adventures guest star would be the first companion actor to have hosted a quiz show with the same name as a 1960s serial, but beyond trivia, the report has been fairly well received as far as we can see – Walsh is a decent actor, who's worked with incoming executive producer Chris Chibnall before on Law & Order UK, and a fun screen presence. But given the source, might it all be a load of bobbins?...

Strictly Come Dancing had another classic Halloween episode this weekend, but of course it was scarier for some of the celebrities than others. But who looks like they might be out of the running and who is creeping closer to that Glitter Ball trophy?
Out of the running: Kirsty Gallacher
Well, this seems particularly cruel. Kirsty had finally started to turn things around last week and was creeping up our rankings… but then her Halloween Charleston went horribly wrong with slips and mistakes and she picked up her lowest score of the series before becoming the first woman to be booted out (she joins the series' other eliminees Iwan Thomas, Anthony Ogogo, Daniel O'Donnell and Ainsley Harriott). Bad luck, Kirsty.
10. Jamelia (⬇3)
It doesn't seem quite fair to have Jamelia at the bottom of the rankings. She's far from the worst dancer in the competition and she's been improving, too, but...

Strictly Come Dancing pro Natalie Lowe has apologised to Ainsley Harriott for their jive choreography after the pair were voted out of the competition.
Speaking on Strictly: It Takes Two, an emotional Natalie admitted that she has been crying since she and Ainsley left the show.
"It's really hard," she said. "I've been really upset the last couple of days - I can't seem to get it together... I'm just really gutted, but I've had such an amazing journey so it's really sad to see it come to such a sudden end.
"But the judges said there wasn't enough technique and all of that - I've just apologised to [Ainsley] for not giving [him] a proper jive. I decided to do it rock and roll because it suited [him]."
But Ainsley insisted he didn't blame Natalie for his exit, saying: "Don't be silly. I've never enjoyed putting on my training trousers every...

Strictly Come Dancing's latest victim Ainsley Harriott doesn't believe Bruno Tonioli meant to offend anyone after his gaffe on last night's show (October 24).
Tonioli caused a stir yesterday after describing Jay McGuiness' pasa doble as "the bull's bollocks".
Strictly Come Dancing: Ainsley Harriott and Natalie Lowe are the fourth couple to exit
Harriott said of the incident: "Well, I think it kind of reminds everybody that it is live television – things can happen like that.
"And you know, I can't really speak for Bruno or anybody else. It was such a quick thing that happened, and I thought that Tess [Daly] was spot on when she apologised to viewers.
"But it's the last thing you want to hear – you don't want to hear that type of thing on primetime television, Saturday night family TV. But it's live TV, and sometimes things do go wrong. I'm sure that he didn't mean it.

Ainsley Harriott has responded to the judges' criticism of him on Strictly Come Dancing.
On last night's (October 24) show, Darcey Bussell noted that Harriott's "character sometimes overtakes occassionally", with both Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli adding that he comes up with his own interpretation of a dance.

The celebrity chef has admitted he struggled to hide his personality while performing on the show with professional partner Natalie Lowe.
"You go through rigorous training, hours and hours every day to achieve a certain standard, and I think that of course your personality comes out in the dance," Harriott explained. "I always see the glass half full and I am an exuberant type of person."
He noted that four of his five dances were energetic and that his waltz allowed him to show another "more controlled" side.

Ainsley Harriott has offered up his opinion on why the male celebrities keep leaving Strictly Come Dancing.
The celebrity chef became the fourth male to exit this year's competition when he was elimimated tonight (October 25) with professional partner Natalie Lowe.
Strictly Come Dancing: Ainsley Harriott and Natalie Lowe are the fourth couple to exit
"I think the very first week when I was involved in it, when we were dancing, I was asked about who was looking good and I said, 'The girls look very, very strong'," Harriott recalled.
"We've just got a very, very strong collection of people there. I put my effort in but the old 58-year-old bones didn't quite stand up to it all! But I gave it my best, I really did."
He also weighed into the debate over whether the fact that some of this year's celebrities had previous dance training gave them an advantage.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell has described Jeremy Vine as "gorgeous" - but suggested his long limbs are getting in his way.
Speaking on tomorrow's episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, Bussell admitted that she enjoys watching the broadcaster.
"He's gorgeous," she said. "I am a fan - he's kind of got an odd charm about him.
"But he does look like a giant spider and you want him to kind of be able to bring it all together and contain it and it's all a bit out there. But he's slowly getting it together."
Bussell added that Vine needs to calm down a bit on the show, saying: "It's weird with him because he gets very overexcited and with those limbs and with the excitement, it goes wild, so he doesn't appreciate that one step for him looks like a leap - it looks like a giant leap.
