- Serious-looking, dignified English character actor from the London stage. On screen, he specialised in portraying noblemen (Prince Metternich in Juarez (1939), Grand Duke Gregor in The Lone Wolf in Paris (1938)) and heads of state (Napoleon III in The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936) and A Dispatch from Reuters (1940) ). Also a long gallery of doctors , police inspectors and diverse authority figures. Prolific on television from the mid-1950's.
- Appeared in two Best Picture Oscar winners: The Life of Emile Zola (1937) and Around the World in 80 Days (1956), and six other nominees Naughty Marietta (1935), A Tale of Two Cities (1935), The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936), Anthony Adverse (1936), Captains Courageous (1937) and Kitty Foyle (1940).
