Helena Lea(I)
- Music Department
- Additional Crew
Helena Lea was raised in Washington, D.C., and was exposed to various
cultures throughout her childhood. She is fluent in English, Greek, and
French, speaks Italian and has reading knowledge of Russian. She lived
in Europe for a few years and, consequently, was exposed to lifestyles
and attitudes that sharply contrasted with those in the United States.
These experiences enabled her to broaden her approach in all aspects of
life.
Helena spent much of her youth involved in the arts. She studied piano and ballet and performed various roles in "The Nutcracker" with the National Ballet. She attended the Quaker High School Sidwell Friends, where she was exposed to the values of personal service, justice, and peace; ideals that she strongly upholds today.
Helena's college credentials include a B.S. in International Relations from Carleton College and an M.A. in Communications Management from the Annenberg School at USC. Her musical studies include music theory, history, and opera classes from The Juilliard School.
Helena found her true passion while attending a class at UCLA on Music Post Production for Film and TV. Composer Ray Colcord, the instructor, gave her an opportunity to work as a music editor on the TV series "Dinosaurs." She became a member of the Motion Picture Editors' Union and continues to be an active union member.
During her first 5 years as music editor, Helena worked on such movies as "Maverick," "Toy Story," "Dumb and Dumber," and "Breakdown." Shortly after she had the honor of meeting and working extensively with director Robert Altman on three consecutive movies - "The Gingerbread Man," "Cookie's Fortune," and "Dr. T. and The Women." She alone was responsible for creating the temp music scores for each movie and edited the final scores for Mark Isham, David A. Stewart and Lyle Lovett, respectively. Altman's desire to be innovative and original coincided with Helena's conviction obtained from her diverse childhood experience that creativity has no limits; there are many "right" answers.
Overlapping the Altman movies, Helena met and married picture editor Ned Bastille. Together they worked on 8 movies with director Brian Robbins.
Helena's current professional goal is to work on meaningful, intelligent projects with directors who enjoy pushing the envelope and making a difference in the world through the art of film.
