As Alyssa Milano came of age on Who’s the Boss?, her breakout role turned out to be a case of art imitating life.
Marking the ABC sitcom’s 40th anniversary, the former child star recently recalled how her preteen character Samantha Micelli was largely inspired by her own childhood, including when she “started developing breasts.”
“A lot of Sam was based on who I was as a kid, which was someone who loved sports, a tomboy, someone who loved her family, tough, scrappy, and everything that kind of went on in my adolescence,” she explained to People.
“Like, I remember when I started developing breasts, I walked in the next week and there was a script called ‘Sam’s First Bra,'” added Milano. “So it was like, everything that happened in my life, they wrote it in the show.”

Heading into the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys, Gold Derby predicted that Taraji P. Henson would easily win Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Abbott Elementary.” However, the award ended up going to the perceived runner-up, Judith Light (“Poker Face”), who happened to deliver a performance over twice the size of Henson’s. As voters set out to select Light’s successor, they may either stay on track by honoring another actress with more than 20 minutes of screen time or take one of multiple opportunities to go in the opposite direction.
The six current comedy guest actress contenders asked the TV academy to consider their work in episodes in which they appear for an average of 14 minutes and 34 seconds (or 27.50% of the total running time). This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the drama the categories, of which “Shōgun” is favored to win many.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to the drama around drama and I’m excited! It feels like we’ve got some real races here — or is that just me creating drama where none exists during the dog days of summer? We’re not moving off “Shōgun” for Best Drama Series (sorry to “The Morning Show” and “The Crown”) or either actress frontrunner (Anna Sawai and Elizabeth Debicki). I also feel fairly confident in Billy Crudup winning for “The Morning Show,” a lead dressed in supporting clothes and a beloved performance from a previous winner. But Best Drama Actor remains really tight in my head,...

Tayarisha Poe’s film The Young Wife takes us through a tumultuous day in the life of Celestina as she prepares for her non-wedding celebration. Poe draws us deftly into Celestina’s swirling mindset as anxieties and doubts collide with the demands of the day.
Celestina wants only to express her love for River outside of rigid traditions. Yet preparations bring unwelcome interventions, with well-meaning friends and family misunderstanding her non-wedding vision. Their questions and concerns weigh heavily on Celestina as she balances caterers and flowers with deeper reflections on commitment and future paths.
Meanwhile, memories of past regrets surface. We learn of friendships fractured by tragedy and a stifling corporate job recently fled without explanation. Celestina’s distress mounts from pressures both within and out of her control.
Director Poe handles this emotional maelstrom with nuanced empathy. Her writing and the guidance of breakout star Kiersey Clemons bring Celestina...

Apple TV+ is releasing what looks to be a chilling new series, just in time for Halloween. According to the streamer, Before is an “an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller” about a child psychiatrist and widower who encounters a small boy with a “haunting connection” to his past. Naturally, the lead role is played by the “you look mah-velous” guy.
Yup, Billy Crystal is the star of this dramatic, seemingly creepy show that, judging from the description, seems not so dissimilar from The Sixth Sense, another story of a child psychologist who befriends a child with whom he shares a mysterious connection. But imagine the Bruce Willis part played by someone who seems like he might break into a medley of humorous show tunes at any moment.
Before also stars the great Judith Light, and one of the executive producers is Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, who recently penned the script for...

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Billy Crystal is one of the funniest men in Hollywood. From When Harry Met Sally to Monsters, Inc., The Princess Bride to the actual Academy Awards, the man's got the comedic Midas Touch. But the City Slickers star is set to flex his dramatic chops as a grieving psychiatrist in Sarah Thorp's (The Bounty Hunter) limited Apple TV+ supernatural mystery series Before, which has just revealed a set of first look images ahead of its two-episode premiere on 25 October. Check them out below:

I was just thinking the other day (while watching When Harry Met Sally…) that we don’t see Billy Crystal in movies or TV shows nearly enough these days, so it’s great to see that Apple TV+ has just unveiled a batch of first look images from their upcoming psychological thriller series Before, which stars and is executive produced by the legendary “multi-award winning actor, comedian, and filmmaker” Billy Crystal! The images can be viewed in this article.
Described as “an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller” and a “supernatural mystery series,” Before sees Crystal taking on the role of Eli, a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn, encounters a troubled young boy, Noah, who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past. Billy Crystal is giving us the creeps. That is not a sentence we usually write about the funnyman actor, but it’s still true today thanks to this first look at Before. On Wednesday (July 31), Apple TV+ shared a first look at his new series for the streamer, and it looks like we will not be in stitches over his performance. Instead, we’ll probably be watching between our fingers. Put simply, anytime we’re talking about tots with supernatural or telepathic gifts,...

Oh là là! Lady Gaga got the party started on Friday, performing Zizi Jeanmaire’s “Mon Truc en Plumes” along Paris’ famed River Seine during the Olympics Opening Ceremony.
In true Gaga fashion, the performance was gloriously over the top, complete with exaggerated choreography and more pink feathers than you could shake a dead Muppet at. (Not that we’d ever do that, of course.) According to Gaga, the pom poms were rented from a French cabaret theater called Le Lido, and she collaborated with Dior on the chic, custom costumes, which included naturally molted feathers.

The Emmy races for Best Comedy Guest Actress and Best Comedy Guest Actor often result in massive surprises for awards pundits. Last year’s shockeroo victories for Judith Light of “Poker Face” and Sam Richardson of “Ted Lasso” are just the most recent examples. But this year, if Gold Derby’s Creative Arts predictions turn out to be accurate, there won’t be too many people with their jaws on the floor.
“The Bear” guest stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal currently have overwhelming leads to win their two respective races for playing Donna Berzatto and Michael Berzatto, aka the mother and brother of Jeremy Allen White‘s Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto. Curtis enjoys 82/25 odds to prevail, while Bernthal is sitting pretty at 37/10 odds. Interestingly enough, both actors have submitted the episode “Fishes” for Emmy consideration — that’s the Christmas flashback hour from Season 2 which featured countless shouting matches and emotional moments.
