While Avatar: The Last Airbender remains a timeless masterpiece of television, its spin-off, and sort-off-sequel, The Legend of Korra, didn’t quite match the acclaim of its predecessor. The show faced criticism for its storyline and thematic choices, which divided the fanbase.

It’s now widely known that Korra, the successor to Aang in The Legend of Korra, was portrayed as bisexual, a decision that stirred controversy among some fans. The show’s co-creators, Bryan Konietzko, and Mike Dimartino, openly acknowledged and confirmed this relationship on their Tumblr blogs, which was seen as breaking conventions in children’s shows.

Plot: Set in Japan, the series follows Suzie who recently lost her husband and son in a mysterious plane crash. As consolation, her husband’s company gives Suzie a robotic home assistant with a sunny disposition–aptly named Sunny. A begrudging relationship forms between the two as they set out to figure out what really happened to Suzie’s family.
Review: Love or fear them; robots have been a part of popular culture for over a century. As technology develops, so do the various interpretations of sentient machines. From Metropolis and Star Wars to M3GAN and Optimus Prime, robots are interpreted as everything from comic relief to villainous killers bent on the destruction of mankind. The new AppleTV+ series Sunny takes a darkly funny look at the potential balance between love and hate for robots in a great example of mature storytelling combined with an original take on a timeless genre.

The familiar touchstones of summer shark horror are there in spades in French filmmaker Xavier Gens’ (Frontier(s), Cold Skin) Netflix feature Under Paris. Jaws and eco-horror collide as a Mako shark goes rogue right at the peak of summer’s busy season. As its title suggests, the novelty here comes in the form of its setting: the Seine River and Paris’ labyrinthine underground system. The unique location and stunning underwater photography go far in Gens’ latest, but not far enough: an overreliance on a familiar story and clashing tones work against the summer shark carnage.
An intense opening introduces scientist Sophia (Bérénice Béjo) as she and her team, including her lover, investigate a trash island out at sea. They find the carcass of a baby sperm whale trapped and starved by the debris, which then attracts sharks. That includes Lilith, a tagged female Mako that Sophia’s team has been tracking.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most critically acclaimed series of all time. Not only does it have stellar fan reviews from all sides, it also has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One of its most commended aspect is its immersive world-building. Not only are the dynamics between factions excellently well-thought-out, but the powers and bending as a concept are truly one of a kind.
Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender
Knowing just how magnificent the power structure is, it is surprising to find out that the original plan that the network had was a lot different. Nickelodeon seemed to be aiming for a ‘magic and action’ series, something that could have easily doomed the animated series before it was even released.

Thankfully, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino came to the rescue.

Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

Voice actors always have an important role to play in animated media franchises. Their job is to express the emotions that their characters are feeling only with their voices and it requires an incredible amount of skill and perfection to be able to do it consistently.

The Avatar Cycle is one of the key features of the Avatar franchise. Each time an Avatar dies, the Avatar Spirit reincarnates in the next nation in the Cycle. In Avatar: The Legend of Korra, this cycle is further explained, where we learn that the Avatar Spirit was Raava, the Spirit of Light, who carries bending abilities from one body to another.

Now, we understand that the spirit travels around the four nations, settling in the body of the next bender in the cycle. However, a curious theory has allegedly broken down what is the pre-requisite for Raava’s selection process. The theory draws from another speculation that has been making the rounds on the internet, one that explains how sub-bending works in the world of Avatar.

General Iroh of the Fire Nation is one of the most beloved characters to come out of the Avatar franchise. Through his wisdom and compassion shown towards those around him, along with the badass monicker of the Dragon of the West, Iroh cemented himself as one of the most interesting characters in the show.

Mako Iwamatsu was the voice of General Iroh at the beginning of the series, but the voice actor sadly passed away in 2006, which prompted Greg Baldwin to take over the role from his mentor. Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.

Uncle Iroh has undoubtedly been a fan-favorite and one of the most likable characters from the 2005 show Avatar: The Last Airbender. Played by the Japanese voiceover artist Mako Iwamatsu for two seasons, the actor injected the character of Iroh with wisdom and warmth. Unfortunately, by 2006, the role went over to American actor Greg Baldwin.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most iconic animes of all time. The series has one of the most dedicated fandoms of all time and has managed to survive multiple bad adaptations that could not taint the love and memories they have tied with the series. Not only are fans attached to the story and the protagonists, but every single character has managed to resonate with at least one part of the viewer.

A perfect example of a beloved character is Uncle Iroh, whose wisdom has helped more than those who exist in that universe. One very iconic part of his character is a song that he sings called Leaves From The Vine. It is quite common for actors and voice actors to get asked to sing or say something that their characters say quite frequently.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has an intricate power system based on elements that bestow some stellar abilities on its characters. One of the rare bending techniques in the original Nickelodeon animated series was lightning generation, which only a few key members of the Fire Nation could wield across the show’s three-season run.
Azula using lightning generation in Avatar: The Last Airbender
In the spin-off/successor series The Legend of Korra, lightning generation becomes a more common technique and the reason behind such drastic change is never explained. However, a new theory suggests that Fire Lord Zuko had a hand in the propagation of lightning generation. Moreover, the theory also presents a compelling case for how Zuko’s decision might have doomed the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

One of the riskiest scenes in Netflix’s new “Avatar: The Last Airbender” adaptation has nothing to do with any of the four elements, flying a 12-year-old over the skies of the Earth Kingdom, or the nefarious schemes of the extremely hot Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). It’s a simple two-minute scene tucked in the middle of Episode 4, mostly shot-reverse shot, nothing fancy. Of course, you don’t need that many camera positions to shoot a funeral.
This funeral is a new twist and old information in the story of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” — and an example of the live-action adaptation at its most successful in both deviating from and honoring its source material. The original animated version of “Avatar” had 20 episodes per season to slowly tease out its characters’ depth, even those loyal to the Fire Nation who have been trying to destroy the Avatar (hence why...

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” reads the Nietzschean maxim that serves as epigraph for writer-director John Milius’s 1982 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian, thereby encouraging viewers to plumb the philosophical depths of this rousing sword-and-sorcery epic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from the get-go. So it’s sort of ironic to consider that, given the film’s commercial success and subsequent cult status, Milius no doubt contributed to the seemingly endless proliferation of this slogan across multiple platforms, emblazoned on everything from motivational posters to coffee mugs.
Milius’s seriousness of intent is signaled from the opening scene when Conan’s father (William Smith) advises his young son (Jorge Sanz) to trust nothing in this world but his sword. Critics at the time believed this solipsistic bit of paternal advice to reflect the ruthless individualism of Reagan’s America. But things are a bit more complicated than that,...

Life in remote, rural areas has always been a source of inspiration for filmmakers, with the uniqueness of such settings and their difference from the urban ones frequently resulting in intriguing narratives. The 2013 Guillermo del Toro-directed film “Pacific Rim” is something of a cult classic for fans of the sci-fi genre, many of whom were disappointed when del Toro didn’t return to direct the 2o18 sequel “Pacific Rim: Uprising.” In a new interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub, the director reveals the reason he didn’t return for part two came down to a failure to pay a deposit for soundstages in Toronto, Canada.
here's @RealGDT revealing the real reason he didn't direct #PacificRim 2 at @Collider's 10th anniversary screening in @IMAX 3D.

A middle-aged woman forced to return home after 20 years following the death of her father. A service that provides elderly call girls to socialize with lonely Japanese seniors. A grimly hilarious look at the pressures faced by Japanese women, itself a rebuttal to the post-covid social issue films that dare not flash a smile. These three films, “Yoko,” “Tea Friends” and “Ripples” are universal in their messaging while challenging taboos about Japanese culture and society.
TheWrap hosted a three-night film festival spotlighting emerging voices in Japanese cinema. “Yoko” director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri made an in-person appearance for the post-screening Q&a while “Tea Friends” director Bunji Sotoyama and “Ripples” filmmaker Naoko Ogigami participated via Zoom. All three shared, with the assistance of translator David Neptune, poignant insights and personal stories.

San Francisco, Aug 13 (Ians) Google seems to be working on an artificial intelligence (AI) writing and editing feature for Chromebooks.
The tech giant is actively working on a project that has at least five codenames associated with it, with the main three being “Orca”, “Mako” and “Manta”, reports 9To5Google.
When editing a body of text on ChromeOS, Orca will show up in the right-click menu.
If users choose Orca, a “bubble” with the Mako Ui will appear over the screen.
According to the code, Mako will have three main tasks.
First, it will have the ability to “request rewrites” of a certain text, presumably one that an AI has rewritten.
“Secondly, it can offer a list of ‘preset text queries’, which we assume, in the context of generative AI, to be example prompts for how to ask for a certain style,” the report said.

1984’s Conan the Destroyer was an attempt to soften Arnold Schwarzenegger’s titular barbarian into a PG-rated fantasy film hero. The result was a movie that was only a middling success in theaters, being overshadowed by Arnold’s other big 1984 movie, James Cameron’s The Terminator. Conan the Destroyer proved to be the last time Arnie would play Robert E. Howard’s Cimmerian icon, and in the decades since its release the movie’s reputation has been pretty atrocious. Hardcore fans prefer John Millius’s darker, R-rated Conan the Barbarian to Richard Fleischer’s lighter, family friendly version which seemed to owe a lot more to eighties fantasy movies like The Beastmaster than Millius’s original. It’s a deeply silly film, and one of the cheapest Schwarzenegger’s films of the eighties, with him essentially forced into making this and the following year’s Red Sonja to fulfil a...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, Guillermo del Toro stages an epic Jaeger-on-Kaiju brawl in the under-appreciated "Pacific Rim.")
Certain established filmmakers have managed to carve out their own niche in the industry, playing in a very specific sandbox that best showcases their talent and interests. Christopher Nolan is typically going to err on the side of big-budget, crowd-pleasing entertainment with a cerebral twist. Wes Anderson is never going to let the "quirky" allegations of his critics stop him from delivering immaculately-composed movies unfolding with an almost childlike sense of wonder. And then there's Guillermo del Toro, the monster-loving Mexican filmmaker who is never afraid to branch out from one genre (or even an entire medium) to the next if that's what best suits the story.

Underestimate James Cameron at your own peril — he feeds off it, as witnessed by “Aliens,” “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” “Titanic,” “Avatar,” and now “Avatar: The Way of Water.” True to his promise, the master showman has delivered the cinematic goods beyond expectation with the sequel, topping the original in epic storytelling and high-tech spectacle.
This time Cameron expands the universe of Pandora by going underwater for splendor and adventure with the introduction of the Metkayina reef clan. In this regard, Cameron has truly become the heir apparent to his idol, Jacques Cousteau, and has outdone himself with innovation, thanks to the VFX wizards of Wētā FX and his other crafts teams. Once again, Cameron has proven that 3D isn’t dead, and has given us a reason to return to theaters this holiday season.
As far as the Oscars, “The Way of Water” could potentially equal its predecessor in nominations.

To the short list of ‘classic’ nuclear horror on Blu-ray we can now add the one that hits closest to home. Lynne Littman’s harrowing film stays small-scale and Big Emotion, enduring a slow extermination for an innocent family. A little California town loses contact with the rest of the world, and hope fades as the awful reality sinks in. Jane Alexander, Lukas Haas, and William Devane star in a TV movie so affecting that Paramount gave it a theatrical release. The disc has two commentaries and a selection of 20th anniversary features.

The Academy Museum is dedicating November to a monthlong reflection on the history of Chinese depictions in cinema.
“Hollywood Chinese: The First 100 Years,” programmed by documentarian and longtime Academy member Arthur Dong, is a screening series of features and shorts – some classics, some obscurities – that mark both highlights and lowlights of how Chinese have been portrayed in film, particularly in the Western studio system. The series is an evolution of Dong’s 2007 documentary, which kicks off the series Nov. 4, and 2019 book of the same name.
“When people see a film like Hollywood Chinese, they’re really only seeing snippets. We really need to see the whole, because it’s not fair to the artists and the creators that we critique and examine the work based on 30 seconds,” Dong, who previewed his series Oct. 23 as part of his ongoing Hollywood Chinese exhibition at West Hollywood’s famous Formosa Café,...

Based on the homonymous manga by Ken Wakui, “Shinjuku Swan” is another testament to Sion Sono’s prowess in adapting, with the many and colorful characters, the extreme violence and the overall sleaziness being just down his alley.

The labyrinth story begins with Tatsuhiko, an unemployed young man who does not have even the fare to return home (although he wears a Supreme hoodie that costs upwards than 400), getting into a fight with a gang, and getting rescued by Mako, a scout who recruits girls to work for the Burst scouting agency run by Yamashiro in Kabukicho. Tatsuhiko learns the “tricks” of wooing women to work in massage parlors, and although he feels uncomfortable when he realizes that they are exploited, the sense of belonging, success and comradeship soon take over with him becoming quite successful. However, Burst is not the only company working in the area,...

When the petition to get James Hong a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame began, the response was immediate and overwhelming. Recognizing the groundbreaking body of work from the 93-year-old actor, who has more than 650 credits to his name, actor-producer Daniel Dae Kim started a crowdfunding campaign in 2020 to raise the 55,000 necessary for the star. The goal was met within four days.
The only person who didn’t respond right away was Hong himself. “In actuality, I didn’t hear a thing,” Hong says with a laugh. “Somehow the internet wasn’t quite working or I didn’t get the email. The next thing I hear, they had the money already.”
Hong, who will receive his star in a ceremony on May 10, is still somewhat overwhelmed by the honor. “I want to thank all the fans and friends who donated their money. It boggles my mind to think that...

Princess Mako of Japan is officially married. The niece of Emperor Naruhito wed her longtime love Kei Komuro in Tokyo on Oct. 26. While many royal weddings are marked with a grand celebration, the couple's nuptials were quiet. According to The New York Times, there was a trip to the registry office handled by royal representatives. The Associated Press also reported there was no wedding banquet or other marriage rituals. Because Mako is marrying a commoner, she must relinquish her royal title, Imperial House Law states. And if she has children in the future, they will also not have any royal status. Following the nuptials, The New York Times noted...

Princess Mako of Japan, the 29-year-old niece of ceremonial monarch Emperor Naruhito, has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder weeks before her wedding to commoner and former college classmate Kei Komuro, following years of intense media scrutiny over their relationship and engagement. The Imperial Household Agency, which manages the affairs of Japan's royal family, revealed the news on Friday, Oct. 1, while announcing the couple's wedding date—Oct. 26, Japan's public broadcaster Nhk reported. The outlet said the princess has been diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, or Ptsd, after being criticized repeatedly for a...

The arthouse fantasy “The Green Knight” begins with a word from an off-camera narrator who disappears right after he repositions the Christian allegory of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” as a secular fairy tale.
In this pompous introduction, which sounds like a stuffier version of Mako’s preface to “Conan the Barbarian,” Gawain (Dev Patel) is compared with his uncle King Arthur (Sean Harris), though we are told that Arthur’s legend is a story for another time. Gawain is also a different kind of seeker, and the limits of his vision will come to define not only the meaning of his story but how it is told.
In “The Green Knight”, Gawain’s pilgrimage is illustrated by a series of fussily composed vignettes that hint at mysteries that Gawain and his movie’s creators are only superficially interested in. And while parts of this movie are certainly attractive,...

Pacific Arts Movement (presenters of the San Diego Asian Film Festival) has curated a special collection of films that will celebrate the elders in the Asian community during its 10th Spring Showcase. The presentation includes three films: “The Wash“, “Cosmopolitan“, and “And Thereafter”. The films are available to stream online from April 23 through May 2 nationwide. Never before released on DVD, “The Wash” and “Cosmopolitan” (converted from Laser Disk technology) — a special feature of the presentation that remembers what life used to be like, especially for the very elders that this presentation aims to celebrate. With films from 3 different countries, “Songs Our Elders Taught Me” will be an exploration of the unique stories of love, history, and culture of the elders in our community and provide a space for these stories to be told.

The original “Kung Fu” is a relic of its time. The series, which ran from 1972 to 1975, starred actor David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who traveled through the American West helping others and outrunning a bounty on his head — all with the power of the martial arts on his side. Of course, Carradine was not Asian in any way and with our current ability to cast authentically, it make sense to reboot the series in a way that promotes a more positive depiction.
“Kung Fu,” which premiered on The CW on April 7, tells the story of Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), a young Asian-American woman who spends three years in a shaolin monastery only to return to her native San Francisco when her mentor is murdered. Neither Liang nor showrunner Christina Kim had a deep familiarity with the original series prior to embarking on this iteration.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will undoubtedly inherit the original franchise’s controversies (and start a few new ones of its own thanks to some fresh camera angles), but a series of changes recently revealed by BioWare suggest that the Legendary Edition may just become the best way to experience the divisive title that kicked this series off.
2007’s Mass Effect was touted as BioWare’s most ambitious game until that point, which was true in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, all that ambition resulted in a game that clearly wanted to be a more modernized version of BioWare’s best RPGs but often fell flat on its face as it baby stepped its way into a new era of game design. Like re-watching certain TV shows, the quality and design of the first Mass Effect created a division over whether you should endure that awkward first season.

With a decades-long list of credits ranging from “Rush Hour” to Disney’s live-action “Mulan,” Tzi Ma has earned his reputation as Hollywood’s go-to Asian dad dozens of times over. But even with his latest role, the actor continues to break new ground as the patriarch of the first Asian American family to anchor a broadcast television drama on The CW’s “Kung Fu” reboot.
“Saying that was totally in jest,” Ma said in an interview with TheWrap, downplaying his well-deserved boast. “I mean, it was just so many of them all at once that I was like, ‘Well, okay.'”
Ma is making the jump to TV for “Kung Fu,” a rare series regular role for the actor after having recently lent his fatherly presence to films like “The Farewell,” “Mulan” and Netflix’s “Tigertail.” Ma tends to shy away from the “bullet train” pace of TV but...

Shot at the same time with “Wild Jumbo” (and premiering just one month later), Yasuharu Hasebe saw his protagonists shuttling between the two sets. However, while they seemed to mostly have fun in Fujita’s film, they reserved their more serious work for “Sex Hunter”, which emerges as the best part of the series.
The film revolves around two delinquent gangs; one all-female, named “Alleycats” and led by Mako, and one all-male, named “Eagles” and led by The Baron. The two crews have a peculiar relationship, since there is a definite attraction between the two leaders, but things take a turn for the rather worse, when Alleycat Mari turns down the advances of Eagle Susumu, in favor of a half-Japanese, half-African American named Ichiro. Her attitude enrages the Eagles and especially the Baron, whose sister was raped by a half-breed American Japanese man many years ago, with...

The duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, along with Studio Trigger seem to produce only masterpieces, since their three works include “Gurren Lagann“, “Promare” and the present title.
The story takes place in Honnouji Academy, a high school in Tokyo Bay, where Satsuki Kiryuin is the head of a rather powerful council governing over hundreds of students. Just below her are the “Four Devas”, a quartet of also quite strong students, who are dedicated to her, despite having their own agendas, on occasion. What is the unique thing about Honnouji, however, is that the students are wearing Goku Uniforms, special suits created from a material known as Life Fibers, which are bestowed to them based on their skills and accomplishments. Furthermore, the better suit a student wears, the better situated in the area is his/her family, in a society that is rather segregated.

Tzi Ma likes to brag that, despite not having children of his own, he has an “all-star daughter team.” Hollywood’s go-to Asian dad has taken on a paternal role for a bevy of powerhouse talent — mostly women — including Awkwafina in “The Farewell” and Sandra Oh in “Meditation Park.” But 40-plus years into his career, he hardly feels typecast.
“There’s still so many more Asian American or Asian dads that we haven’t seen, and I really want to make sure the world sees us in every light possible,” Ma, 58, tells Variety as part of the “Represent” video series. The “dad roles,” he says, started coming in after he played Chinese ambassador Solon Han whose daughter, Soo-Yung, is kidnapped in 1998’s “Rush Hour” (he reprised the role in two follow-up films).

The following contains spoilers for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra.
Lightning bending is one of the strongest abilities in Avatar: The Last Airbender, with Azula’s lightning attack nearly killing Aang for good. It’s also one of the rarest techniques, with only Ozai, Iroh, and Azula able to generate lightning on their own. Even Aang, the avatar, and Zuko could only redirect lightning. It was incredibly powerful and only used for huge moments in the story.
This is why when The Legend of Korra first debuted (and as new fans have rediscovered it on Netflix) many fans were confused why lightning bending seemed so commonplace. In Atla only a select few knew the technique, now new lead character Mako was working in a factory with many other lightning benders generating much of the power for the city.
So what happened in the span of time...

Daniel Dae Kim is probably best known for his role in the iconic sci-fi series Lost as well as his role in Hawaii Five-0. He has since become a gamechanger and disrupter when it comes to advocacy for Asians, Asian Americans and other underrepresented voices in Hollywood.
In 2017, he and Grace Park, who is also Asian, exited the CBS reboot of the classic ahead of the eighth season due to contractual agreements surrounding salary. This shined a light on salary parity in film and TV and how it impacts people of color and other marginalized voices — something that the industry has been grappling with for decades.
He forged his own path with his production banner 3Ad, which produced The Good Doctor and has many irons in the fire via his first-look deal with Amazon. He is producing a comedy with deaf actor and model Nyle Dimarco as well as the...

Daniel Dae Kim won’t rest until James Hong has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Kim launched a GoFundMe page on Wednesday to campaign for Hong’s nomination to the Walk of Fame. The goal is to raise $55,000 to pay for the “creation and installation of the star.”

A character can leave a lasting impression from the second they appear, whether we know it or not.
Sometimes it is about the story that the character is involved in, but in this case, it it was about the energy that character brings that helps The 100 stand out differently. Ilian was that character; from the moment he appeared on the show, it changed expectations.
Chai Hansen delivered a touching and epic performance as a person who found himself a bit lost but used that to motivate himself.
It wasn't only about how Ilian played a role in other people's stories once he crossed their path; it was also about the peace he could find in himself after struggling towards redemption.
Chai took the challenge of introducing a new character and made it an unforgettable experience that the audience spent with Ilian. It was so easy to root for Ilian because...
