Netflix is known as the biggest streaming service out there, with the largest number of subscribers and, of course, the largest number of original content. Whether you want movies, series, or animated series, regardless of the genre, Netflix is definitely going to have something for you to enjoy.
While the superhero genre has mostly been on the big screen, with Disney (MCU) and Warner (Dcu) being the biggest players on the market, superhero series are also present, but Disney and Amazon (with The Boys) are the biggest players in that aspect. Or, they have been, at least, until late June.
On June 27, 2024, Netflix released the superhero series Supacell, whose first season consists of six episodes. Focused on Black characters, the series has been praised by many and is slowly becoming a proper hit around the world after having taken the United Kingdom by storm. While it may feel like audiences around the world are tired of the superhero genre and tend to skip all the new Marvel and DC premieres, there is still a lot of potential in the genre. It is now up to the writers and producers to find new approaches to the subject.
The Boys, Prime Video's black satire of the genre, does this well. Pushing the clichés to the point of absurdity, it paints a picture of what the real world would actually be like with superheroes. The abuse of power, political intrigue, and never-ending violence are the biggest parts of it. Netflix's new hit Supacell offers a different perspective.

Warning: contains spoilers for the Supacell finale.
Supacell’s finale is action-packed, including the kind of big superpower smackdown we were promised from episode one. But among all that, there was a huge reveal that slipped by almost so quickly you might not have noticed – the reason for the show’s name.
The reveal comes when the super strength-wielding Andre is taken into custody by the mysterious organisation that has been monitoring Supacell’s powered individuals. As Eddie Marsan’s politely sinister official attempts to recruit Andre, he tells him, “At least one of your parents had sickle cell, or they both had the trait. And supacell is a mutation of sickle cell. It’s very rare, and even if you have it, it can lay dormant in your body forever. But it can also awaken, given the right conditions. Close proximity with another activated supacell is most common.”

The latest from filmmaker Karim Ainouz tells a familiar story for history buffs. Yet the director’s take on Katherine Parr, sixth wife to Henry VIII, proves a good story never ages. We’ve seen tales of kings and queens on big and small screens. Yet the latest adaptation, Firebrand, takes on a far more grounded look at this time in history. It helps that the cast includes Jude Law as the ailing king and Alicia Vikander as Katherine. And both give sublime performances. The rest of the cast includes Sam Riley, Eddie Marsan, and many more.
I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Ainouz, Jude Law, and Alicia Vikander. Karim discussed his take on this story and its grounded nature. Unlike many tales of royalty from the past, the filmmaker’s vision is realism. The discussion with Karim was incredibly engaging, and it was a joy to talk about the project with him.

Author Susanna Clarke‘s best-selling fantasy novel Piranesi is getting the animated feature treatment.
Animation studio Laika has acquired the 2020 book, with the company’s CEO Travis Knight set to helm the project. The novel Piranesi, which won the 2021 Women’s Prize for Fiction, centers on the titular narrator arriving in a parallel universe made up of endless rooms and hallways where newcomers slowly lose their identity.
Knight is directing Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Masters of the Universe feature that hits theaters in 2026, with Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) starring as He-Man. Knight’s other films as director include Bumblebee (2019) and the Oscar-nominated animated movie Kubo and the Two Strings (2016). His animated movie Wildwood — that hails from Laika and includes voice work from Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali and Awkwafina — is set to hit theaters next year.
“Piranesi is a treasure and very dear to me,” Knight said in a statement.

Alicia Vikander and Jude Law in FirebrandImage: Roadside Attractions
The physicality of the relationship between King Henry VIII (Jude Law) and his sixth and final wife Catherine Parr (Alicia Vikander) is strongly present throughout director Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand. This is a couple that’s always sparring, whether when having sex or fighting.

“Fireband” is a new Brit-produced historical drama feature, directed by Karim Aïnouz, recounting the life of ‘Katherine Parr’, the last wife of ‘Henry VIII’, starring Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, Eddie Marsan, Ruby Bentall, Bryony Hannah, Sam Riley, and Maia Jemmett, releasing June 14, 2024 in theaters:
“..in ‘Tudor England’, twice married, accomplished, and educated ‘Katherine Parr’ (Vikander), reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical ‘King Henry VIII’ (Law).
“Her consent to marry him carries great personal risk, given that her predecessors are either vanquished, beheaded, or dead. When Henry appoints her as ‘Regent’, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her.
“Henry’s courtiers, suspecting she’s sympathetic to radical ‘Protestant’ beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King.

Netflix has released the official trailer for Rapman’s ‘Supacell’ and have revealed that the Mobo award-winning British rapper and songwriter Ghetts will play the role of Krazy.
The series is about a group of five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. They have little in common except for one thing: they are all Black South Londoners. One man, Michael Lasaki, must bring them all together to save the woman he loves.
Created, Directed and show ran by Rapman with Sebastian Thiel also directing, the cast includes Tosin Cole (61st, Street, Till, Ear for Eye) as Michael, Nadine Mills (Sliced and The Weekend) as Sabrina, Eric Kofi Abrefa (Blue Story, Bmf) as Andre, Calvin Demba (The Rig, Life, Micky and the Bear) as Rodney, Josh Tedeku (Moonhaven, A Town Called Malice) as Tazer, Adelayo Adedayo (The Responder, Timewasters) as Dionne, Rayxia Ojo (Harry Potter and The Cursed Child – West End Production,...

The opening title cards of Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand state that history is written primarily about men and war, while “for the rest of humanity, we must draw our own—often wild—conclusions.” For audiences, it’s a warning of the revisionism to come in this story of Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law).
It is, though, not a promise of a compelling or invigorating story. That’s because the filmmakers, as intent as they were to play fast and loose in the sandbox of history, hardly explore the motives and emotions that drive Katherine as she balances her fealty to her husband and her friend Anne Askew (Erin Doherty), the famed poet who fought for the cause of English Reformation.
Instead, what follows is an often shapeless and rudderless film, focused mainly on whether or not King Henry trusts Katherine.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Jennifer Lopez will be touring this summer after all. And while that’s certainly a crime against Pride Month if not humanity itself, it at least frees up some extra time–and money–to watch some movies. And while 2024 looks to be a rather tepid year for blockbusters, there are still plenty of Don’t-Miss Indies out there ready to crawl into your eyes and ears.

Warning: this Inside No. 9 review contains spoilers.
The curse of the ninth. What could be a more fitting inspiration for one of these demonically clever stories? If it hadn’t already existed, they’d have had to invent it.
Inside No. 9’s creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith didn’t invent this superstition but they used it to make perhaps their most elegant story yet.
The plot was a trap, avoided. Composer Nathaniel Burnham (Eddie Marsan) had taken his own life after being haunted by a curse that struck artists upon reaching their ninth symphony. Years later, his cash-strapped widow Lillian (Natalie Dormer) ensnared piano tuner Jonah (Reece Shearsmith) to first grave-rob and then complete Nathaniel’s unfinished work, intending to sacrifice him to the fatal curse so that she could profit from the final product. Instead, Jonah turned the tables on Mrs Burnham and, in a sequence beautifully presented by director Guillem Morales,...

“Midas Man,” an upcoming drama about Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who helped turn the Beatles into the biggest thing in pop culture, has sold North American distribution rights to Briarcliff Entertainment. The company will distribute the movie in collaboration with Studio Pow and American Entertainment Investors. It stars Jacob Fortune-Lloyd of “The Queen’s Gambit” as Epstein. The film is directed by Joe Stephenson (“Doctor Jekyll”).
Briarcliff plans to release the film in more than 800 theaters nationwide in the fall. “Midas Man” is set against the backdrop of the 1960s, and explores Epstein’s genius and talent, as well as his ambition and his personal struggle for self-acceptance. Born into a family of furniture retailers, Epstein’s passion for music and ability to spot talent led him to discover the Fab Four and helped launch them into the musical stratosphere. Last month Eddie Marsan faced a happy dilemma: two high-profile projects in which he co-stars –Apple TV+ series “Franklin” led by Michael Douglas and Sam Taylor Johnson’s highly-anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” – were both being released on the same day, April 12, in Marsan’s native U.K. (“Back to Black came out in the U.S. on May 17).
The resulting publicity maelstrom was, Marsan says, “intense.” And yet despite that, the actor – who has starred in over 150 screen projects including “Ray Donovan,” “Deadpool 2” and Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes,” can truthfully claim to be “not really that famous.”
Partly that’s because his highest profile roles in the U.S. have seen the East London-born actor putting on an American accent, including in “Franklin,” in which he plays the second U.S. President, John Adams. Marsan has a long history with the character, having once been...

Back To Black starts its home rollout next week, with DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray options to follow in the summer.
Currently the highest-grossing 15 certificate film in the UK in 2024, the story of Amy Winehouse was brought to the screen earlier this year in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s really rather divisive feature, Back To Black.
While Marisa Abela as Winehouse earned plenty of acclaim, questions were asked of the film, and more are likely to follow as it makes its way to home release. Not got long to wait there, either. The film will be debuting on premium video on demand services from 27th May.
Studiocanal has also confirmed that it’s fully supporting the movie via physical media too. The film will be heading to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from 1st July 2024.
There’s also going to be a HMV-exclusive ‘First Edition’ too, which is nice.

Talented singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse’s tragic life was already the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary, Amy in 2015, made a few years after her death in 2011at age 27 from alcohol poisoning. So my first reaction on hearing of the biopic drama Back To Black was to wonder if we needed another Amy Winehouse movie. The excellent 2015 documentary seems to have have told her story well and thoroughly, but reportedly the Winehouse family was unhappy with it. However, the family granted permission to the filmmakers of this new biopic drama, Back To Black, with access to materials and song use.
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson and writer Matt Greenhalgh previously collaborated on another music biopic, Nowhere Boy, a fine drama about the childhood of John Lennon. The filmmakers assert that...

While some may approach the new film Back to Black expecting a lurid tale of a talented performer’s descent into addiction and eventual death, they would be wise to learn that the film is more of a celebration of the talent that it’s subject – Amy Winehouse – had and a lovingly crafted ode to remembering that talent.
Telling the story of Winehouse’s somewhat meteoric rise to fame and the making of her album Back to Black, the film draws from the personal lyrics from her phenomenal album to tell Winehouse’s tale from her own perspective.
Working from a script by Matt Greenhalgh – with whom she last collaborated in 2009 on Nowhere Boy – director Sam Taylor-Johnson, weaves a pseudo-whimsical tale of incredible creativity and talent stopped dead in its tracks. The approach taken here though, tells Winehouse’s story as though the tragedy is being perpetrated upon her and...

How do you capture a life — a famous one, a big one, an incredibly well-documented one — on the silver screen? Take it moment by moment. For her Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” director Sam Taylor-Johnson traces the rise and fall of the beloved British singer and songwriter (played by Marisa Abela), telling a well-known tragic tale through a series of iconic images.
We still remember so much about the Grammy winner: the swoop of her eyeliner, the tease of her hair, what she looked like performing on stage, what she looked like relaxing in a park with her husband, the fear in her eyes when the paparazzi tailed her. And the relentless documentation of her life that made all of those images possible is also what makes telling a “new” story so hard. And while many early reactions to the film’s casting and very existence...

Plot: The life of singer Amy Winehouse (Marisa Abela), including her troubled relationship with her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O’Connell) and father (Eddie Marsan) and her struggles with addiction.
Review: When making a biopic about a famously troubled yet brilliant artist, there’s a fine line to walk when it comes to juggling the story of their art with the depiction of their addictions. Movies like Rocket Man or Walk the Line did it well, but they told ultimately triumphant stories about people overcoming those addictions. When the person succumbs, it can be dicier. I remember the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, tried to do both but spent way too much time with its star miming along to Houston songs. Bohemian Rhapsody turned Freddie Mercury’s life into a PG-13 cartoon.

Writer Matt Greenhalgh and director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who previously collaborated on the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, return to the genre with Back to Black, telling the story of iconic musician Amy Winehouse. Although the film’s heart is consistently in the right place, its attempts at a complicated execution all too often misfire, leaving a somewhat bitter aftertaste despite occasional success.
Back to Black focuses on Winehouse’s ascent from humble beginnings as a lounge singer in Britain to become one of the most acclaimed voices of her generation. With Winehouse’s tragic rise and fall happening not even a decade and a half ago, audiences likely already know much of this story, but Greenhalgh’s script doesn’t imagine that audiences are ignorant.
Where Back to Black succeeds the most is exploring Winehouse’s struggles with addiction, from alcohol to drugs and codependence with her partner. It narrowly avoids being didactic and exploitative,...

Eddie Marsan, who played the role of the abusive headmaster in Deadpool 2, is starring in the upcoming biopic of Amy Winehouse, Back to Black. There has been a lot of conversation around the film, and not all of it has been positive. Unfortunately, a lot has been done at the expense of Marisa Abela, who plays the role of Winehouse.
Marisa Abela plays Amy Winehouse in Back to Black
While many do not agree with her casting and have voiced it in a tame manner, sometimes the media can take it a step further and cross many lines. Recently, Marsan spoke about how the paparazzi took some extreme measures during the filming of the movie. The steps they took seemed to have had serious effects on Abela, and the Deadpool star is not happy about it.

Amy Jade Winehouse could have been any young woman growing up in 1990s London — palling around with her mates, sneaking lagers, shagging dudes, getting into trouble, getting her nose pierced, and getting expelled from drama school for it. (That, and a few other reasons.) Until she opened her mouth, at which point she seemingly became possessed by a 1940s jazz chanteuse channeling centuries-old lust and sorrow. Winehouse went from a kid with a bluesy, contralto wail that almost felt like a parlor trick, considering that it was coming from a tiny white teen from Southgate,...

“Back to Black” will mark a star-making breakout turn for lead actress Marisa Abela, but portraying late Grammy winner Amy Winehouse came with a symphony of vitriol during production — including critics calling out Abela’s casting.
Abela’s co-star Eddie Marsan, who portrays Winehouse’s father Mitch in the film, told IndieWire that Abela had to endure “terrible” hate from naysayers while filming in the U.K. The real-life Mitch Winehouse even had to defend Abela’s casting when the film was first announced, despite Abela being the first actor formally attached to the project.
“I could tell she was nervous. She’s only a young actor, and it was a massive part,” Marsan told IndieWire during a recent interview. “We had a bond straight away, and so it was terrible when we had to film scenes in London on location in Camden and Soho because even though we had...

Heartstopper season 3 finally has a release date – and we can expect more of Charlie and Nick’s love story in October. Details below.
After announcing Hayley Atwell, Jonathan Bailey and Eddie Marsan as new additions to the cast last month, Netflix has set a release date for one of its most popular series.
Heartstopper will return to our screens on 3rd October. Some of you might know that day as Mean Girls Day after the iconic scene in the 2004 film in which Aaron Samuels asks Cady for the date and it just happens to be 3rd October. Now there’s another reason to celebrate the date.
The announcement comes with a short clip from the upcoming season. In it, Charlie (Joe Locke) is practising saying I love you to Nick in front of a mirror before being picked up by him. The clip is just about a minute long but...

Once a show becomes popular, there are many celebrities who want to be a part of the story and have a cameo. Quinta Brunson, the creator of The Abbott Elementary, once shared that she has a long list of people who have contacted her hoping to be involved in the story in some way.
Heartstopper, originally created by Alice Oseman as a graphic novel and then adapted into a series, is probably no exception. Judging by the story of Jonathan Bailey, who was extremely happy to get his guest role in the show, there must be a long line of celebrities who want to do the same.

"Do you believe in Hell? I think we're both bound for it." Roadside Attractions has revealed the first official trailer for Firebrand, the latest from Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year, which is why they're debuting the trailer now just before Cannes 2024 kicks off soon. In a rotten, blood soaked island kingdom, there once was a queen by the name of Katherine Parr. The sixth wife of the vengeful King Henry VIII - and the only one to survive. This true story is about Queen Katherine Parr & Henry VIII's marriage. Adapted from the novel "Queen's Gambit" by Elizabeth Fremantle. With the hope for a future free of tyranny at risk, will Katherine submit to the inevitable for the sake of King and country? Alicia Vikander stars as Katherine Parr, Jude Law as Henry VIII, plus Eddie Marsan, Amr Waked, Sam Riley, Ruby Bentall,...

Alicia Vikander is unleashing all the fire and the fury as Queen Katherine opposite Jude Law’s King Henry VIII.
The two star in “Firebrand,” which debuted at Cannes 2023 and marked director Karim Aïnouz’s English-language debut film. During war-torn Tudor England, Katherine Parr (Vikander) reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical King Henry VIII (Law). Katherine hopes that her fate is different from her predecessors, the queens who were either vanquished, beheaded, or died of non-murder causes.
After their union, Henry appoints Katherine as Regent, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas. Yet that power makes Katherine a target as Henry’s courtiers begin suspecting that she’s sympathetic to radical Protestant beliefs. Once Henry returns to England, his courtiers convince him to convict a series of Katherine’s confidantes with treason and burn them at the stake.

Jonathan Bailey was so blown away by “Heartstopper” that he just knew he had to be on the show.
“Like so many people, I watched the first [season] and thought it was one of the biggest, most beautiful gifts to so many people, and I wish I had that growing up,” the “Fellow Travelers” and “Bridgerton” star told me at the Met Gala Monday night.
It was announced in late April that Bailey will make a cameo appearance as Jack Maddox, an Instagram-famous classicist and celebrity crush of Charlie (Joe Locke). “I had a mutual friend who knows [executive producer Patrick Walters] and I just said, ‘If there’s anything I could do to help and be a part of that story,’” Bailey recalled.
He said that the series, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series of the same name, “really has changed the way people could grow and communicate around who they are.

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

Uberto Pasolini, who wrote and directed the James Norton-starring Nowhere Special that opened this weekend, says, rightfully, the film’s power emanates from the tangible bond you feel between father and son. Norton – the BAFTA-nominated British actor (Bob Marley: One Love, Little Women, Happy Valley) – is John a 35-year old window washer and single father to four-year old Michael (BIFA-nominated Daniel Lamot). John has been diagnosed with a terminal illness and is on a quest to place his son in a loving home.
Norton “understood that the film lived or died — would have lived or died — on the relationship and on the connection between the two. And so he came over to Belfast before we started shooting and spent an enormous amount of time with the family, with the boy himself. Sitting down on the floor of Daniel’s room and playing with his toys and going out for chicken nuggets,...

French film executive Cécile Gaget is stepping down as CEO of Wild Bunch and joining Carrousel Studios, the new European production group launched last month by Lupin star Omar Sy, Fast X director Louis Leterrier and producer Thomas Benski. Gaget was appointed CEO of Carrousel and will take up the job on May 1.
