Copper has been cancelled but Sunday's series finale may not be the end for the characters. Deadline reports that executive producers Barry Levinson, Tom Kelly and Tom Fontana (also the co-creator) are considering a movie version.
Fontana has apparently worked out an extensive story arc for season three and may rework that into a movie script. It would supposedly look at life in America following Lincoln's assasination and the Reconstruction years that followed.
Will Rokos and Fontana created Copper which premiered in August 2012 to 1.1 million viewers. That was a record-setting audience for BBC America and the period drama was renewed in October. Unfortunately, the numbers weren't as strong in season two so the show was cancelled.

Exclusive: The BBC America series ends Sunday but Copper may get a second life on the big screen. One day after the network announced that the Civil War-era series would be cancelled after two seasons, I’ve learned that co-creator/executive producer Tom Fontana and fellow EPs Barry Levinson and Tom Kelly are considering a movie version. The extensive story arc work Fontana did on a third season has the veteran producer eyeing revamping the material for a movie, sources say, with the potential big-screen version said to look at examining life in America after the death of Abraham Lincoln and the years of Reconstruction. Copper, which Fontana co-created with Will Rokos, was BBC America’s first original scripted series and centers on Irish immigrant cop Kevin Corcoran in 1860s New York City. It premiered in August 2012 with 1.1 million total viewers, the largest audience ever for a BBC America series debut.

"Copper" won't be coming back to BBC America for a third season. The network launched the period drama, which was created by Tom Fontana and Will Rokos and set in 1860s New York, with great fanfare in 2012 as its first wholly owned original, not a co-production. But despite record ratings when it premiered, the series has failed to find major traction in its second season, while BBC America's latest, "Orphan Black," has drawn serious accolades. "'Copper' has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved," BBC America's Perry Simon said in a statement released to the press. "The opportunity to work with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. There will be no third season for BBC’s period drama Copper, whose second-season finale this Sunday will be a series finale. Copper, BBC America‘s first original scripted series, got off to a strong start, setting a record for a BBC America series premiere. But, despite a cast infusion with Donal Logue and Alfre Woodard joining the series in Season 2, Copper lost momentum and was overshadowed by BBC America’s second drama series, the buzzy Orphan Black. “Copper has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved,” said BBC America Gm Perry Simon. “The opportunity to work with (executive producers) Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of. When Mad Men's Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks) received her indecent proposal this season on the AMC period drama, viewers were sharply divided about her actions within the controversial and polarizing episode. But Hendricks' Harris is emblematic of a larger trend within television this year: the virtual proliferation of prostitutes within scripted dramas. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "TV's New Prostitute Fixation," in which I examine the sudden proliferation of prostitutes on television, from Game of Thrones and Crimson Petal to True Blood and Copper, and what may be behind the trend. There are a host of shows created in the last decade that have tried to be the next Sopranos: Take a morally ambiguous protagonist, ideally involved in some kind of criminal endeavor, hopefully trapped in a difficult marriage or an otherwise fractious ongoing relationship. And there are just as many shows that have tried to be the next Wire — or anyhow, they’ve tried to be a version of The Wire that could actually attract a healthy amount of viewers, mixing the show’s specific strengths (twisty serialized narrative, massive cast, end-of-empire themes) with eyeball-grabbing affectations (sex, violence, sexy violence.

What did everybody think of Fontana, Will Rokos and Barry Levinson's 1864 New York cop show? Did you like star Tom Weston-Jones? Were you drawn to any characters in particular? How did you feel the show did at recreating the time period on a Toronto soundstage? And will you keep watching? Because I feel like the show isn't quite there yet, and also because it happens to be airing (for the next few weeks, anyway) opposite both "Breaking Bad" and "The Newsroom," I don't expect I'll be doing weekly reviews, but I'll...

If the post-Civil War drama Copper (Sundays, 10 pm, BBC America), about Irish cops navigating every layer of circa 1865 New York society, were a tenth as good as it is ambitious, it would be 2012's best new series. Its pedigree is strong: it's executive produced by Monster's Ball writer Will Rokos, Oz's Tom Fontana, and Barry Levinson, who worked with Fontana on Homicide: Life on the Street and directed some memorable period films (Diner, Avalon, Bugsy, et al). And its scale is — or at least seems to be — gigantic. Much of the show is set in and around Lower Manhattan's Five Points neighborhood, the stomping ground of Bill the Butcher in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York; it takes its stylistic cues from that picture and from Deadwood, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, and other down-and-dirty historical re-creations. It even has its own stylized vernacular. Why, then, is...

From outside, a war-torn looking warehouse located on the outskirts of Toronto hardly looks special at all. But once you step inside, you can see that BBC America has obviously gone to great lengths to recreate 1860s New York City for its period drama, "Copper." The hard cement floors have been transformed into a dirty cobblestone road. A hardware store, a tavern with a freestanding bar and the 6th Precinct Metropolitan Police Station are just a few of the buildings that crowd the street. Make a sharp right and you're into a more affluent district of large houses and mansions.
Created by Tom Fontana ("Oz," "Homicide: Life on the Street") and Will Rokos ("Southland") "Copper" follows Detective Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones), an Irish-immigrant cop doing his best to keep the peace in the rough Five Points neighborhood while seeking answers to a case that's hit too close to home.

Heretofore known as the channel that brings British TV to American shores, as well as re-runs of old-ish American sci-fi shows, BBC America is joining the esteemed ranks of televisual content creators. Their just announced foray into original scripted programming is "Copper," which their website describes as:
"[Set] in the Five Points Irish neighborhood of New York City in the 1860s. The series focuses on a rugged young Irish cop who has to navigate the unruly and sometimes violent currents of his immigrant neighborhood, while simultaneously interacting with uptown Manhattan high society and the emerging black community in Harlem."
Literally, it is set in the same place and three years prior to Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, which makes me wonder if, eventually, the series will introduce Bill the Butcher and conclude its third season (if it lasts that long) with the gang war that ended the film. Now,...

The network has ordered 10 episodes of "Copper," an immigrant drama about an Irish cop working in 19th century New York.
Co-created by "Oz" mastermind Tom Fontana (pictured) and Will Rokos ("Southland"), "Copper" is slated for a summer 2012 premiere and, quite hilariously, starts shooting in Toronto, Canada, this fall.
No casting announcements were made, but BBC America general manager Perry Simon did express his excitement over the big news for the network.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Will Rokos is in a critical condition in hospital after he was struck by a subway train in New York City over the weekend. Rokos was hit by the train as he stood on a platform on Saturday, October 30. The driver is said to have slammed on the brakes but was unable to avoid the accident.
According to some reports, Rokos was leaning over the platform when the train came. The impact sent him flying onto the platform. When help arrived, Rokos was semi-conscious and lying on his side. After surviving the initial impact, the writer was taken to the city's Bellevue Hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
Rokos was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay prize for his work on Halle Berry's 2001 thriller "Monster's Ball".
