David Lynch has taken to X to clarify his comments in a recent interview about his battle with emphysema and isolation for fear of Covid.
“Ladies and Gentlemen,” Lynch writes, “Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking. I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco – the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them – but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema. I have now quit smoking for over two years. Recently I had many tests and the good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema. I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire. I want you all to know that I really appreciate your concern. Love, David”

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Nicole Kidman squat-piss on Zac Efron’s jellyfish sting, or eye-fuck John Cusack from across the room of a no-contact death row prison visit, or Efron dancing to Linda Clifford’s “I Just Wanna Wanna” in clinging tighty-whities in the rain. All of this and more happens in Lee Daniels’ sweaty, swampy Southern Gothic “The Paperboy,” the writer/director’s 2012 follow-up to his Oscar-winning sensation “Precious.” It’s a movie, as Daniels told IndieWire, that “doesn’t get any love.”
Set in 1969, this delirious entertainment follows Matthew McConaughey as a Florida reporter covering inmate Hillary Van Wetter (Cusack), who has been convicted of killing a racist cop. McConaughey hires his brother Jack (Efron) to probe Hillary’s possible innocence. Efron is seduced by the vamping, sex-mad blonde Charlotte Bless (Kidman), a southern-friend Alabama belle in love with Hillary from afar. Violence, madness,...

Having twins in the movie business is not something new, even if they are identical. But sometimes fans have no idea that a character they love dearly is a twin in real life. From James and Oliver Phelps from the Harry Potter movies to Rami and Sami Malik – one of whom is an Oscar-winning actor, the other a teacher.
The Crovetti Twins on the set of The Boys | Amazon Studios
Fans usually get to know about twins when both are in the entertainment industry. Like the Olsen twins or the Sprouse twins. But when one is considerably more famous than the other, it sometimes gets lost in the wind that they are part of a pair. And that is what has happened with a The Boys star.

“The Devil’s Bath,” a period psychological thriller which competed at the Berlin Film Festival, has been submitted by Austria as its official Oscar entry for the international feature film race. The film picked up the Silver Bear for best cinematography (for Martin Gschlacht) at the Berlinale.
“The Devil’s Bath” is directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the Austrian filmmaking duo behind “Goodnight Mommy” which had bowed at Venice and had also represented Austria in the Oscar race. It went on to be remade into an English-language film released by Amazon under the same title, starring Naomi Watts.
Set in rural Austria in 1750, “The Devil’s Bath” stars Anja Plaschg, the up-and-coming singer and composer known as Soap & Skin. Plaschg plays Agnes, a young married woman who feels oppressed in her husband’s world, which is devoid of emotions and limited to chores and expectations. A pious and highly sensitive woman,...

The 51st Telluride Film Festival promises to be a star-studded affair, with several high-profile movies expected to debut at the top of awards season.
As is customary, the full lineup, including screening schedules, isn’t announced until the day before the festival begins. This year’s festivities take place from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2. So longtime attendees, both press and cinephile enthusiasts, now look to the classifications of movies playing at Venice, Toronto and New York Film Festivals to gather clues on what could be shown during the Colorado-set festival.
The Toronto Film Festival lineup provides reliable clues. The labels for the films as “World,” “International,” “North American,” or “Canadian” premieres offer the most significant hints on what might stop at Telluride during the Labor Day weekend festivities. The timing of TIFF (Sept. 5 to Sept. 15) leaves no other festivals to claim the premiere designations beforehand, making these guesses quite reliable, give or take any last-minute changes.

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2014 film, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) starring Michael Keaton, explores the story of 90’s ex-superhero star Riggan Thomson and his return to the spotlight in his adaptation of Raymond Carver’s 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love' on Broadway. Along with Keaton are Hollywood stars Edward Norton as Mike Shiner, a narcissistic actor who believes Riggan is just a Hollywood puppet; Emma Stone as the witty and sarcastic daughter of Riggan; Zach Galifianakis as Riggan’s best friend and voice of reason and Naomi Watts as Lesley, girlfriend of Mike Shiner and fellow star in Riggan’s adaptation. Despite appearing to be about an actor’s dying career and his last-ditch attempt at being relevant again, 'Birdman' cleverly tells a story unique in its delivery of the question: what is real art? This question is posed to us early...

The Toronto International Film Festival is bringing back the star power after last year’s Hollywood labor strikes led to a drought of household names at the annual gathering.
Projects from Pamela Anderson, Jennifer Lopez, Riz Ahmed, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and more will see world premieres in Toronto come September, as well as key awards contenders like Edward Berger’s “Conclave” and Sean Baker’s “Anora.”
In the special presentations section, Gia Coppola will deliver her anticipated drama “The Last Showgirl” starring Anderson. The “Baywatch” star plays a dancer who, after her long-running Las Vegas revue is abruptly canceled, is forced to reconcile with her failures and find a path forward. The film screened as a work-in-progress for potential buyers in Cannes this May, and will no doubt be one of the highest-profile sales titles at the market surrounding TIFF this year.

The 2024 Emmy nominations made waves this week, with The Bear breaking records alongside Carol Burnett, Nava Mau, Steve Martin and more.
This year, FX’s The Bear broke the record for the most nominations for a comedy series, earning 23 nods for the show’s second season. The milestone comes after the series set the record at last year’s ceremony (held in January due to strike delays) for the most awards won by a debut season, at 10.

This year, FX’s The Bear broke the record for the most nominations for a comedy series, earning 23 nods for the show’s second season. The milestone comes after the series set the record at last year’s ceremony (held in January due to strike delays) for the most awards won by a debut season, at 10.

A total of 36 individuals earned their first Primetime Emmy acting nominations in 2024, including “Feud” stars Naomi Watts and Tom Hollander and recent Oscar also-rans Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”). A standout among these newbies is Paul Rudd, who is the only one in the group with shots at two performance wins: Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Best Narrator (“Secrets of the Octopus”).
Rudd could now make Emmys history as the eighth doubly-nominated first-timer to triumph on at least one of his bids. The first to do so was Robert Cummings, who simultaneously won for “12 Angry Men” and lost for “My Hero” in 1955. He was followed by Jack Albertson, Eileen Brennan, Jane Lynch, Riz Ahmed, Ann Dowd, and Ali Wong.

The nominations for the 76th annual Emmys have dropped. There were some records broken, a lot of surprises including 36 first-time nominees and some major snubs. And a lot of fun facts and trivia about this year’s nominees. FX’s period drama series “Shogun” earning 25 Emmy nominations this year, the most of any dramatic series this year. The original NBC miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell best-seller which starred Richard Chamberlain and the legendary Toshiro Mifune received 14 nominations and won for limited series, costume design, graphic design and title sequences. Hulu’s “The Bear” broke the record for most nominations for a comedy series earning 23 nominations. NBC’s “30 Rock” had held the record with 22 nominations since 2009. Native Americans finally have some representation in this year’s nomination with Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis earning outstanding supporting actress nominations for Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15, exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.
Sheryl Lee Ralph (ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”) and Tony Hale (Netflix’s upcoming “The Decameron”) announced the nominees on July 16 for the 76th Annual Emmy Awards, which will take place on September 15.
This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running,...

It was only after fans rewatched the entirety of "The Boys" in preparation for the season 4 premiere that many realized that the actor who played Ryan Butcher in the season 1 finale had been recast with the series' current actor, Cameron Crovetti. The introduction of the character was a glorified cameo, but when Crovetti took over in season 2, Ryan became what showrunner Eric Kripke would later call, "the key to season 4." With such an expanded role, the creative team wanted a more experienced child actor, and they found that with Crovetti. Fans became so familiar with the performance that they completely forgot the role wasn't originally his, which is understandable considering there was over a year of time separated from season 1 and season 2. Having two actors play one character isn't unheard of and recasting decisions happen all the time, but there's a third actor who has portrayed Ryan Butcher, and this...

Audrey Diwan is following up her Golden Lion win for “Happening” with an adaptation of Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel “Emmanuelle.”
The sensual thriller centers on a titular woman (Noémie Merlant) whose business trip to Hong Kong awakens an insatiability inside of her. Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, “Stranger Things” breakout Jamie Campbell Bower, Anthony Wong, and Chacha Huang also co-star.
An official synopsis for the film reads: Emmanuelle is in search of a lost pleasure. She flies alone to Hong Kong, for a business trip. In this sensual world city, she multiplies experiences and meets Kei, a man who never ceases to elude her. Diwan’s film, freely adapted from Arsan’s novel, casts a female gaze on the intimate quest of the woman whose name still evokes one cinema’s most provocative characters.
“Emmanuelle” will open the San Sebastián Film Festival on September 20. The feature is distributed by Pathé.

Although 2023 Emmy nominations voters were able to view the entire second season of “The Bear” while judging the merits of its first, the team behind the FX series did not employ a similar strategy in 2024. Nonetheless, the newly released third season will still influence TV academy members as they spend part of August deciding whether season two is worthy of any wins. The latest episodes have already impacted the mindsets of Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy predictors, who have collectively boosted its odds in several categories over the past week.
As has been the case since this Emmys season began, “The Bear” currently holds over 80% of the Best Comedy Series win votes in our predictions center. Even now that our number of participating readers exceeds 3,000, none of this category’s other candidates have managed to crack 10%. “The Bear” is also expected to dominate five of the six comedy acting races,...

This spring we learned that, rather surprisingly, Audrey Diwan’s follow-up to her Golden Lion-winning Happening, won’t be at Venice, Telluride, or TIFF either as Emmanuelle secured a world premiere at the 72nd San Sebastian Festival. Starring Noémie Merlant, Naomi Watts, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Will Sharpe, ahead of the premiere as well as its subsequent French release five days later on September 25, the steamy first French trailer has arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Emmanuelle (Merlant) is in search of a lost pleasure. She flies alone to Hong Kong on a business trip. In this sensual global city, where she initiates numerous encounters, she meets Kei, a man who constantly eludes her. Audrey Diwan’s film, freely adapted from Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel, casts a female gaze on the intimate quest of the woman whose name still evokes one cinema’s most provocative characters.”

"Desire ebbs & flows, it evolves. And wears off, too..." Pathe in France has revealed the first official trailer for the new take on Emmanuelle, an erotic drama inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan's beloved novel. It was already adapted once before into a film in 1974, also titled Emmanuelle, though this is a fresh vision. From the Golden Lion winning filmmaker of Happening comes a new Emmanuelle, starring the French actress Noémie Merlant as the woman on a trip to Hong Kong exploring her sexual desires. Loosely adapted from Arsan's novel, director Audrey Diwan's film follows a woman flying alone to Hong Kong on a business trip where she initiates numerous encounters including with Kei, a man who constantly eludes her. Merlant co-stars with Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, Jamie Campbell Bower, Chacha Huang, Anthony Wong, among others. Oddly the film is skipping this year's Venice Film Festival, despite Diwan's win a few years ago,...

When celebs flee N.Y. and L.A. in the summer, Paris morphs into a City of Light starry hub – particularly for recent menswear shows which welcomed Jeff Goldblum, Pharrell, Asap Rocky and Rihanna, Sabrina Carpenter, Colman Domingo and now, fall 2024 couture. While Dior Couture had glammed visits from Jennifer Lopez and Doja Cat, and Armani Privé proudly featured Cate Blanchett, Naomi Harris and Marisa Abela, Balenciaga took the prize for the best dressed front row.
