"People die if the Law is not upheld." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for the sequel to the hit Spanish lo-fi sci-fi film The Platform from 2019 (it landed on Netflix in 2020) called simply The Platform 2. The first film is one of the best capitalism-is-terrible films of modern times. This continuation is again directed by the same Spanish filmmaker Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia who made the original film (he has been making this in secret for years). As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, another resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to help fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life? Back in 2020, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia made his feature directorial debut (after a couple decades of making short films) with the thriller The Platform, which was released through the Netflix streaming service. You can read my very positive review of that film at This Link, but the gist of it is that I was very impressed and was left eager to see what Gaztelu-Urrutia would make next. He was assembling a film called Rich Flu before the strikes last year, but it turns out that the next movie we’ll see from him is a sequel to his debut, The Platform 2. This one will also be heading out into the world courtesy of Netflix – and the streamer will be releasing the film on October 4th, helping kick off the Halloween season. With that date just a couple of weeks away, Netflix has shared a clip from the film, and that can...

AMC Networks has added several Spanish actors to the cast of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” as the show prepares to film its third season in Spain. The spinoff, which previously took place in France, will now feature Eduardo Noriega, Oscar Jaenada, Alexandra Masangkay, Candela Saitta and Hugo Arbues in lead and recurring roles.
Noriega, Jaenada and Masangkay are established talents in Spanish cinema. Noriega is known for movies such as “Thesis” and “Open Your Eyes.” Jaenada starred in films about legendary flamenco singer Camarón and the Disney pirate movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Masangkay made her debut in the historical film “1898: The Last of the Philippines.”
The addition of these Spanish actors comes as the show moves production to Madrid and other Spanish locations. This shift offers new backdrops and challenges as Norman Reedus returns as Daryl Dixon. Reedus and co-star Carol Peletier, played by Melissa McBride,...

AMC Networks has named its first Spanish cast for the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, currently shooting in Spain.
Eduardo Noriega, Oscar Jaenada and Alexandra Masangkay will be series regulars, as they join Candela Saitta and Hugo Arbues in recurring roles. Their casting follows the world-weary Georgia zombie apocalypse survivor-turned-Europe backpacker Daryl Dixon, played by Norman Reedus, rambling over to Spain for season three of the successful The Walking Dead spinoff.
That’s a switch from the show’s first and upcoming second seasons, which are set in France. Noriega has had film roles in Thesis, Open Your Eyes, The Wolf, The Devil’s Backbone and Vantage Point.
Jaenada has credits that include Camarón: When Flamenco Became Legend and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Masangkay made her film debut with 1898: The Last of the Philippines and The Platform and also appeared in Código Emperador and most recently Valley of Shadows.

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s high-anticipated “The Platform 2,” the Basque director’s follow-up to Netflix mega-hit “The Platform,” will world premiere this September at the San Sebastián film festival, closing its culinary section.
Subject of a high-profile acquisition by Netflix at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, engineered by CAA Media Finance, XYZ Films and Latido Films, “The Platform” has gone on to shoot to the near top of Netflix’s chart of non-English film hits on record, now featuring as No. 5 with 82.8 million views, thanks to its terrorific mix of futurist dystopian sci-f and redolent social allegory wrapped in a brutal survival thriller. That comes from the set-up: a vertical prison, with hundreds of floors, with every day a stone dumbwaiter descending with food left over from tenants above. Higher-level inmates gorge themselves; those below face starvation, suicide or cannibalism.
That structure looks to be retained in “The Platform 2,” set for release on Netflix on Oct.

Skynet is making its return: the trailer for the Netflix animated series “Terminator Zero” has been revealed.
The series follows the aftermath of Skynet, an AI being, gaining consciousness and waging its war against humanity in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” It becomes self-aware on Aug. 29, 1997, after which a war rages on for decades.
“Terminator Zero” is set in 2022 and follows a soldier, Eiko (Rosario Dawson), who is sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She journeys back to 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland), who is working on another AI system, Kokono (Sonoya Mizuno) to compete with Skynet. Although it exists in the Terminator universe, it centers entirely around new characters.
The trailer sees Lee attempting to save the Earth from Skynet, while being hunted down by an assassin from the future.

2019’s successful Spanish dystopian film The Platform is getting a follow-up, with a trailer and a release date for The Platform 2.
Back in 2019, The Platform became one of those buzzy Netflix hits that became a sensation. The film became one of Netflix’s most-watched non-English language films ever, thanks in part to the fact that we were all in lockdown and strangely enough seemed to want to watch a film about people who were in a similar position.
The original film was a sci-fi horror movie ‘where residents are confined to a large, tall building or “Vertical Self-Management Centre.” The high-concept idea proved to be an engaging one, with close to 60 million households viewing the film within its first few weeks of release.
A follow-up duly went into production and is coming this October. It is directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, the helmer of the 2019 original. The Platform 2 stars Milena Smit...

The Platform was first released in 2019 and became a surprising hit. This Spanish social science fiction horror film directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia was originally released as El Hoyo, which translates as “The Hole.” It starred Iván Massagué, Antonia San Juan, Zorion Eguileor, Emilio Buale Coka, and Alexandra Masangkay, receiving the People’s Choice Award for Midnight Madness in Toronto, and a series of positive reviews.
The movie takes place in a huge “Vertical Self-Management Center,” modeled after a skyscraper. Residents are transferred in for a variety of crimes or desires, and they are required to rotate between the tower’s many floors once a month. Food is provided by a platform that starts at the top floor and progressively lowers through the levels, pausing for a set period of time on each, which leads to struggles.

"What are you hungry for?" Surprise! Netflix has been developing a sequel to the hit Spanish lo-fi sci-fi film The Platform from 2019 (it landed on Netflix in 2020). The highly anticipated sequel to sci-fi horror “The Platform” has set a release date, with the residents of The Pit returning to screens after five years.
The film is set to hit Netflix on Oct. 4, just in time for spooky season.
2019’s “The Platform” is one of the streamer’s most popular Spanish films ever, getting to the fifth spot in the non-English Film Top Ten category with over 82,800,000 views.
The film is set in a multi-storey prison nicknamed “The Pit” which sees its residents get increasingly desperate as they fight for survival.
The tower’s real name is the Vertical Self-Management Center and it works by allocating a handful of prisoners to each floor. There is gunplay aplenty in this Spanish thriller about a young renegade who can create illusions with his mind – with some neat touches amid the mayhem
Directed by Daniel Benmayor, this Spanish mashup of Inception, Scanners, The Fury and The Matrix follows 18-year-old Ian (Carlos Scholz), whose parents were Perceivers: a species of cold war spy chemically engineered to be able to project illusions with their minds. Most were killed off in a cull known as the Disinfection, which makes Ian, who has inherited his parents’ powers, especially valuable. Strolling into a bank brandishing a scrap of paper, he can wordlessly persuade the teller that it is a cheque ready to be cashed. Pointing his finger, he makes an adversary fall to the ground from a nonexistent bullet wound.
No wonder sinister forces are out to exploit the lad. Swooping to his rescue is Adriana (Lela Loren), an operative from...

"You don't have as much control as you think you have!" Amazon's Prime Video has revealed the official trailer for a Spanish mystery fantasy action thriller titled Awareness, a film by Spanish filmmaker Daniel Benmayor. This premiered in Spain earlier this year, and will be available for streaming worldwide in October. A teenager lives with his father on the outskirts of modern society and runs small scams with his ability to generate visual illusions upon unsuspecting victims. Things get complicated when his powers get out of control in public, with a mysterious agency coming after him. As he tries to evade capture, Ian discovers he's not the only person with these powers and that his whole life has been a lie. This sounds like a very similar premise to Freaks (2018). Awareness stars Carlos Scholz, Pedro Alonso, María Pedraza, Óscar Jaenada, and Lela Loren. This one also reminds me of Hypnotic,...

"With her power there's no telling what he can do." Lionsgate has finally launched the first full trailer for Chaos Walking, the long-delayed, epic new sci-fi action movie from Doug Liman, that has also undergone reshoots after originally being set to open in 2019. Based on a book, the sci-fi film is set in a dystopian world where there are no women and all living creatures can hear each others' thoughts in a stream of images, words, and sounds called Noise. Which is visualized in a clever way in this. With the sudden appearance of a mysterious girl named Viola Eade, played by Daisy Ridley, they both end up on a journey of discovery that will change them both forever. Chaos Walking stars Tom Holland as Todd, along with a fabulous main cast including Ridley as well as Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, David Oyelowo, Kurt Sutter, and Óscar Jaenada.

Miami — Breaking barriers, Netflix is preparing to unleash “Xtremo,” billed as one of Spain’s first full-on action thriller movies, starring Oscar Jaenada and action specialist Teo García.
A Netflix Original Film directed by Daniel Benmayor, “Xtremo” also marks the first production of Showrunner Films, the new production company set up by Spanish sales agent Vicente Canales and partner Julieta Videla.
“’Xtremo’ was born as a play to create action cinema made here in Spain. A film designed for the global market but with the character and originality of Spanish cinema,” Canales said in a press release.
For Netflix it’s certainly a gamble in bringing a new genre to a territory, but the bet is a calculated one as action thriller films have performed well for the service internationally. In 2019, the Michael Bay, Ryan Reynolds vehicle “6 Underground” was a massive success around the world.
Although the film only premiered on Dec.

Madrid — A leading example of transatlantic Spanish-language co-production, historical drama “Hernán” – co-produced by Mexico’s Dopamine, part of Mexico’s Salinas Group in collaboration with Spain’s Onza Entertainment – stands out as the largest, most ambitious high-end series featured at this year’s Mip Cancun market, as noted by Netflix’s former head of international originals Erik Barmack, now growing his own company, Wild Sheep Content.
“I always ask: Are people thinking big enough? I think sometimes a [lack of] confidence is holding people back from taking huge swings,” Barmack said in his keynote, urging Spanish-language producers to have “ambition,” and citing “Hernán” as something exceptional.
Limited to not just its character-driven narrative nor its empire-spanning scale, the ambition of “Hernán” is immediately recognizable as a game-changer on the Latin American TV scene, backed by what Dopamine says is the largest budget for any non-studio series in the region under a multi-platform simultaneous release.

When we last saw John Rambo — Vietnam vet, social pariah, savior of POWs and stoic killing machine — he was saving missionaries and mercenaries in war-torn Burma at the end of Bush II’s second term. Then our man returned home to Arizona, walking down the dusty path to the front door of the Rambo family ranch and, presumably, towards a sense of peace. That was then; this is now. Rambo: Last Blood, the maybe, possibly, could-be final chapter of the franchise (though does anything besides scores of nameless, faceless bad guys ever really die?...

Home has always been an abstract concept for John Rambo, which is what the last scene of 2008’s otherwise expendable “Rambo” sequel finally gave the iconic Sylvester Stallone character: a moment when this unsettled Vietnam War survivor, looking very much the worse for wear, lumbers up to a mailbox bearing the character’s surname. At last, somewhere in Arizona, this dutybound embodiment of American military might had found his way back to the family ranch.
Such closure was in nearly every way antithetical to the spirit of “First Blood” — that is, the Ptsd-fueled franchise’s inaugural movie and the eponymous David Morrell novel that inspired it, both of which traded on the notion that a good man who’d gotten a taste of killing had serious difficulty turning off that deadly skill set upon his return. Never has Spanish TV drama production been so vibrant.
Over the past 12 months, “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) and “Elite” became global sensations via Netflix, building on the success of previous series that demonstrated a never-seen-before appetite for Spanish originals.
Netflix is opening the doors of its first European production hub in Madrid in early April and preparing five new Spanish Originals; Movistar + aims to produce 15 series a year; HBO and Amazon are increasing production.
Meanwhile, top free-to-air TV broadcasters Mediaset España and Atresmedia are re-inventing themselves as studios, producing content for third-party operators, and taking advantage of their production expertise.
The boom is opening up more ambitious and flexible business production models, such as co-production.
“Many of our projects, from inception, have co-production partners,” says Telefonica’s Movistar + president, Sergio Oslé. “It keeps us international from the get-go and helps us distribute, and also reach some scale and share know-how.

"The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" is the adventure comedy feature directed by Terry Gilliam, starring Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce, Stellan Skarsgård, Olga Kurylenko and Joana Ribeiro, opening April 10, 2019:
"...'Toby Grisoni' (Driver), an advertising director, is struggling with the production of a commercial featuring 'Don Quixote' and 'Sancho Panza' in rural Spain.
"Then while in a restaurant after an unsuccessful day of shooting, Toby's superior, the 'Boss' (Skarsgård), recommends he find inspiration and brings over a 'Gypsy' (Óscar Jaenada) who sells him an old DVD of 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote', an amateur black-and-white film that Toby coincidentally wrote and directed ten years before as a student.
"Nostalgic, Toby watches the film, so enthralled that he barely notices the seductions of the Boss's wife 'Jacqui' (Kurylenko) in her hotel room. When the Boss returns, Toby frantically escapes, taking the DVD..."

Madrid — Sports streamer Dazn dazzled on Wednesday in Madrid, officially launching in Spain, its eighth territory worldwide, with rights to Spain of MotoGP, Premiere League and Euro League basketball, a thumping promo at a press conference, a beaming MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez on stage, and the double-backed announcements that Brazilian soccer icon Neymar had signed on as a Dazn global ambassador and ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid and Man U.’s José Mourinho, the most acerbic of soccer managers, as a commentator.
But can Dazn actually make money?
History is not on its side. “The market for broadcasting top-notch sporting events, which means soccer in Europe, and national leagues, looks like one where the winner takes all, because the winner creates synergies bundling [sports] with entertainment content and sustaining the interest of the whole family,” said François Godard, at Enders Analysis, citing the fate of sports rights contenders such as Setanta Sports,...

"Sancho!" Screen Media + Fathom have revealed the brand new official Us trailer for Terry Gilliam's long-awaited The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the film he's been trying to make for decades with doomed productions and other setbacks delaying it over and over. Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote finally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last summer, where it was also threatened by a lawsuit that almost stopped it from showing in France at all. But it played, and it's now getting a release in the Us as well. The film is about an advertising executive who jumps back & forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. Starring Jonathan Pryce as Don Quixote, and Adam Driver as Toby, with a cast including Olga Kurylenko, Stellan Skarsgård, Rossy de Palma, Óscar Jaenada, Jordi Mollà, Jason Watkins, and Sergi López.
