Banel & Adama (Ramata-Toulaye Sy)
A directorial debut programmed into the main Cannes competition is typically viewed with suspicion, if not overlooked altogether. Very rare is that lightning-in-a-bottle moment like the arrival of Son of Saul some years back. Typically, the only conversation these debuts generate is the critical debate as to why they’ve been elevated to the top of the pile when there are far more striking debuts buried deeper within the festival. This often means that accomplished films are overlooked and underappreciated by those on the ground, who may be subconsciously comparing a striking feature to the work of more established names it’s competing against for the Palme d’Or, approaching each debut with a “show me” attitude it...

The “House of the Dragon” Season 2 finale gave viewers a sneak peek at Prince Daeron Targaryen, and we’ll be seeing a lot more of the as-of-now-unseen third brother when the “Game of Thrones” spin-off series returns.
The final moments of Season 2 Episode 8 delivered a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it glimpse at Daeron’s blue dragon named Tessarion, and showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed in a Monday press conference that fans will officially meet Daeron in Season 3, which is slated to begin filming in early 2025.
If you need a refresher on who Dareon is, he is the fourth child and third son of Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and Viserys (Paddy Considine), though he has not been depicted on screen thus far in “House of the Dragon.” His existence was confirmed in Season 2, when Otto (Rhys Ifans) mentions traveling down to Oldtown, where he says Dareon was living. Exclusive: Following the acclaim of his most recent film Dream Scenario, director Kristoffer Borgli is reuniting with A24 and looks to have landed two of the town’s biggest names to star in his next film. Sources tell Deadline that A24 is set to finance and produce Borgli’s The Drama, with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in early negotiations to star. Borgli will direct from a script he wrote.
Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen and Tyler Campellone will produce under their Square Peg banner. Project details are under wraps, but rumors suggest it’s about a romance that takes an unexpected turn before a couple’s big day.
This marks another film collaboration between Square Peg and A24 that previously resulted in Hereditary, Midsommar, Dream Scenario as well as upcoming films Death of a Unicorn starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega and Eddington starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone.

We’ll be arguing about whether “Challengers” is an Academy Awards contender up until the nominations are announced in January. Is Zendaya a lock for a Best Actress nomination? If Josh O’Connor and/or Mike Faist get nominated, will they be in lead or supporting? Is this even an Oscars movie? The most likely nominee is Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Best Original Score. They’ve won two times before (for “The Social Network” and “Soul”), and their pounding, attention-grabbing electronic score is one of the film’s most distinctive elements.
Luca Guadagnino’s sexy, memeworthy tennis drama was one of the most talked-about movies of the spring. It’s about the romantic complications of tennis pros Tashi (Zendaya), Art (Faist), and Patrick (O’Connor), who are all in love with each other and all kind of hate each other. It’s the most fun adult drama of the year.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Beast (Bertrand Bonello)
Where to begin with Bertrand Bonello’s wonderful The Beast? It’s been so gratifying to see the initial reaction to the French filmmaker’s tenth feature, after several decades of increasingly remarkable work––the majority of it dark, beautiful, and sleazy. In fact, for what a discomforting and despairing experience much of The Beast is, when I’ve thought back its moments of real, uncomplicated cinematic pleasure, its verve and sense of joyousness, are what mark my memories. It’s romantic, without a capital-r. – David K. (full review)
Where to Stream: The Criterion Channel
Challengers (Luca Guadagnino)
Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opens in an intentionally disorienting manner: We are in New Rochelle, New York for a tennis challenger.

Sound the Steven Spielberg movie news klaxon! Just last month we brought you the exciting news that in-demand Oppenheimer and The Fall Guy star Emily Blunt is in talks to lead the legendary American filmmaker's mysterious new UFO movie, currently slated for release in May 2026. And now we're getting word of another big British name who could be boarding the project. According to the latest issue of Production Weekly, Challengers' Josh O'Connor may yet be the second hand in Spielberg's very vaguely described 'two-hander', though it is important to note at this time that Universal have yet to confirm any major casting news on the hotly anticipated project.

Thanks to stellar performances in “Challengers” and “La Chimera,” British actor Josh O’Connor is on the cusp of a Hollywood breakout. His casting in Rian Johnson‘s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” may have initiated that process, but the actor’s lastest one cements it. Empire reports that O’Connor will star opposite Emily Blunt in Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming UFO blockbuster.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘new original event film,’ set for release in May 2026, is called The Dish.
Steven Spielberg’s next film – his first since 2022’s The Fabelmans – is due out in May 2026, and it now looks as though it has a title. During a recent IMAX presentation for investors, a slide showed a string of upcoming releases from various Hollywood studios, and there, sandwiched between the next Avengers film and The Mandalorian And Grogu is a film called The Dish.
As first noted by World Of Reel, this is undoubtedly Spielberg’s previously untitled project, vaguely billed by Universal Pictures as a “new original event film.”
The Dish title also sounds of a piece with the report going around that Spielberg’s cooking up some sort of UFO-themed movie with screenwriter David Koepp. Certainly, the title brings to mind his friend Robert Zemeckis’ terrific 1997 sci-fi film Contact, in which Jodie Foster...

Set in Mexico City in the 1940s — though the movie is said to be shot in Rome’s refurbished Cinecittà Studios — “Queer” follows the story of Lee (Craig), who lives among American college students and bar owners living off part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits following World War II. The book’s themes touch on sex and drug abuse, with the protagonist becoming infatuated with a younger, discharged American Navy serviceman named Allerton (Starkey). Allerton is a drug user, who, though indifferent to Lee’s advances, eventually relents.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” follow-up transports audiences back in time.
Guadagnino’s “Queer,” written by “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985-published novella, stars Daniel Craig as an American expat and war veteran who begins a romance with a younger man (Drew Starkey). The film, as expected, will debut in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and of today’s surprises was the confirmed casting of pop star Omar Apollo with a top-billed role in the film.
“Queer” follows William Lee (Craig), now in his late 40s and in 1940s Mexico City, reminiscing about his past life among American expatriate college students and barkeeps eking out their own living on part-time jobs and GI benefits. Now that we at IndieWire have landed on the best movies and TV shows of the year so far, let’s dive into the best performances on either screen in 2024 up until now.
We’re now in the thick of Emmys season ahead of the September 15 awards, which actually makes this year’s the second Emmys ceremony to go down in 2024, as the strikes pushed 2023’s event to this past January. All of this is to say we haven’t stopped talking about glorious TV performances in 2024, and our picks for the last six months range from streaming titles from celebrated filmmakers (like “Expats” on Prime Video from director Lulu Wang and co-starring Sarayu Blue alongside Nicole Kidman) and indie screen favorites to breakouts on cable that stunned and surprised us. And some streaming staples, like Hannah Einbinder’s spiky comedy writer in Max’s “Hacks,” outdid even their own performance from past seasons.

Not long after portraying a tennis star in Challengers, Zendaya threw herself back into the game while sitting courtside at Wimbledon. The tennis tournament, which is held in London, hosts many stylish celebrity guests each year. This year, Zendaya was among spectators like Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, and David Beckham. Zendaya is one of the best dressed stars in Hollywood, and her Wimbledon looks did not disappoint. She wore two menswear-inspired outfits, keeping her looking chic as she anxiously watched the players.

On July 13, Zendaya joined the crowd at Wimbledon in a brown tweed Ralph Lauren blazer over a blue button down and horizontally striped tie. She added a level of casualness to the look by keeping her tie loose, leaving many of her buttons undone, and wearing a pair of oversized jeans.

Even as bombs and bullets fly around her, Kate Winslet also has to battle sexism among Second World War correspondents in the latest trailer for Lee.
In Ellen Kuras’ biopic for Sky, Winslet portrays real-life American war correspondent Lee Miller.
“I just want to do my part. Why should the men get to decide what this is?,” Winslet, wanting to document Nazi atrocities, asks her Vogue editor (Andrea Riseborough) early on in the trailer.
Surmounting the odds arrayed against women looking to work on the front lines as war correspondents, Lee did get to the capture key wartime images for British Vogue, including the destruction caused by the Blitz and the aftermath of D-Day. But Lee paid a personal price to witness brutal warfare firsthand as an accredited U.S. journalist.

2024 has been some year for the importance of photojournalists being writ large both on screen and in the news. Earlier this year, Alex Garland's Civil War envisioned its cautionary tale of an imagined new American Civil War literally through the lens of war photographers Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst) and Jessie Cullen (Cailee Spaeny). Just this past weekend, a turning point in the States' Presidential race was captured in an extraordinary image of a bloody-eared Donald Trump. Now, in Cinematographer Ellen Kuras' feature directorial debut Lee, Oscar winner Kate Winslet is set to tell the story of a decade in the life of iconic American war photographer and WWII correspondent Lee Miller. Check out the trailer for the Sky Original movie below:

Kate Winslet is embodying the iconic American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller for an eponymous biopic.
Winslet leads “Lee,” the directorial feature debut from award-winning cinematographer Ellen Kuras. The film centers on a decade in the life of Lee Miller, who was formerly a model and muse for male artists before traveling to Europe to report from the frontline during WWII. Lee infamously posed in Hitler’s private bathtub while abroad and used her Rolleiflex camera to “give a voice to the voiceless,” the film teases.
Its logline reads: What she captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific. Her photographs of the war, its victims and its consequences remain among the most significant and historically important of the Second World War. She changed war photography forever, but Lee Miller paid an enormous personal price for what she witnessed and the stories she fought to tell.

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 88 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2024 winner, Robert Downey, Jr., was 58 when he picked up his prize for “Oppenheimer.” He joined 16 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actor.)
Eleven more men were in their 60s when they won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. For eight fellows, it took till they were in their 70s to win while two (George Burns for “The Sunshine Boys” and Christopher Plummer for “Beginners”) were north of 80 when they took home their only Oscars.
At the 2019 Academy Awards, Mahershala Ali won “Green Book.

Fresh off the success of “Challengers,” director Luca Guadagnino has wasted no time in moving forward with his next film, “After the Hunt.” The project, which boasts an impressive ensemble cast, has officially entered pre-production in London.
On Saturday, cast members Julia Roberts, Chloë Sevigny, and Ayo Edebiri shared a group photo on social media, seemingly from the first day of pre-production. Sevigny captioned her Instagram post with “#backtowork After The Hunt directed by the great Luca Guadagnino,” while also sharing dinner photos with the director.
The cast photo also included co-stars Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, Lio Meheil, Ariyan Kassam, and Will Price, suggesting that a table read for the film had taken place. Edebiri’s post humorously included a screenshot of Guadagnino urging her to share the photo, emphasizing “Not a story!!!”

“The Wire.” “The Hour.” “The Affair.” “The Crown.”
Dominic West has been a television mainstay for more than two decades now, but would you believe he has never received an Emmy nomination throughout his entire career? Luckily, that seems poised to finally change.
As of this writing, 14 out of Gold Derby’s 17 Experts from major media outlets are predicting that West’s Emmy curse will finally be broken with a Best Drama Actor nomination for Season 6 of “The Crown.” The English actor hopes to follow in the footsteps of Josh O’Connor, who won a lead acting Emmy in 2021 for his portrayal of Prince Charles on Netflix’s regal drama. West took over the role in Season 5 and continued playing the real-life royal until the series finale in December of 2023.

Munich welcomed Kate Winslet like she was the queen of the world on Tuesday night when the Oscar-winning actress received a lifetime achievement award at the Munich International Film Festival.
The crowd at Munich’s Deutsches Theater whooped and hollered as Winslet took to the stage to accept her award, and to introduce the European premiere of her latest film, Ellen Kuras’ biopic Lee, in which she plays war photographer Lee Miller.
“It’s like I’m a film star!” joked Winslet, egging on the crowd to keep clapping. “No really, this is not how I usually get treated…I’m just going to lap it up.”
David Kross, Winslet’s young German co-star from The Reader, presented her with the CineMerit award, recalling that they first met “16 years ago when I was just 17 years old, had only made two films and had just left school. And you were Kate Winslet.

The State of the Race
Predicting Best Supporting Actor contenders early on is always one of the most difficult challenges for prognostication, because one cannot predict (mostly sight unseen) whether there are any films that voters will go all-in on, recognizing more than one scene stealer. After all, some films literally have “12 Angry Men” to choose from.
That said, the minute the Sundance premiere of “A Real Pain” ended, critics were already declaring a nomination spot permanently reserved for Kieran Culkin in his first major role post-”Succession.” Adam Pearson in “A Different Man,...

The State of the Race
While there may not have been any 2024 films that have premiered yet that feel like surefire Best Picture winners, there have already been a few Best Actor contenders that could go the distance.

Could Sean Penn make “Milk” today?
It’s a question the actor answered himself, in a recent profile by Maureen Dowd in the New York Times. “It could not happen in a time like this,” he said, of his performance as the slain gay politician. “It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”
Penn is clearly passionate about the Gus Van Sant-directed film, which won him his second Oscar and which, he says, was “the last time I had a good time” on sets more than 15 years after its 2008 release. He’s part of a class of A-listers from an age where the celebrity class was untouchable, and — like Jerry Seinfeld and Jennifer Aniston — he seems visibly irritated by the shifts in power toward the audience. In fairness, it is perhaps hard to believe that the precise way “Milk...

Following the snowplow accident, Jeremy Renner says that he doesn’t “have the energy” for ” challenging ” roles amid his continued recovery.
Renner suffered from blunt chest trauma in January 2023 after an accident with a snow plow that ran him over.
“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel,” Renner said on the Smartless podcast, hosted by Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman. “I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. Jeremy Renner admitted in a recent “Smartless” podcast interview that he doesn’t “have the energy” to take on more demanding roles as he continues his recovery from his near-fatal snow plow accident.
“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel,” Renner said. “I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now. In January 2023, Renner was hospitalized for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries after his Sno-Cat, a large snow plow weighing more than 14,000 pounds, ran him over. He returned to the set of “Mayor of Kingstown” in January of this year to film the third season.
