Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh has dedicated more than four decades to shaping his legacy in Hollywood as a director, cinematographer and producer. But instead of splurging on yachts or a home in the South of France, he is investing in the future of independent filmmaking by mentoring directors like Joe and Anthony Russo, Christopher Nolan and most recently Eddie Alcazar. He and Alcazar’s second collaboration (after 2018’s Perfect) is Divinity, which hits theaters nationwide Friday after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film, set in an otherworldly human existence on a barren planet, follows Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula), a scientist who has dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum known as “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff), his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Society has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug, whose...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Divinity,” which releases in New York on Friday, Los Angeles on Oct. 20 and goes wide on Nov. 3.
In his latest movie “Divinity,” Stephen Dorff’s character is introduced with an extended sex scene and ends the film transformed into a monstrous, muscular creature with a “mushroom cloud” head that looks suspiciously like a penis. It’s not your average sci-fi movie, to say the least.
“Divinity” is a black-and-white, out-of-this-world indie, written and directed by Eddie Alcazar, that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement ahead of its wide release. Dorff plays Jaxxon Pierce, the son of a scientist who invented a magical drug attempting to grant immortality. Years later, Jaxxon has taken control of his father’s company and corrupted his father’s original dream. The drug, called Divinity, grants its users youth and beauty,...

Two experimental films executive produced by Steven Soderbergh — Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity and Godfrey Reggio’s Once Within a Time – join Neon’s anticipated Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall in theaters today, a bit of counterprogramming on a weekend dominated by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Divinity, about a dark and creepy future populated by bodybuilders hooked on an elixir for eternal life, “was always made for the theater,” said Alcazar. “But it’s kind of a roll of the dice of what a distributor wants to do with it.” Utopia, which acquired the black-and-white romp — set mostly in a mansion on a desert that looks like the moon — after its Sundance premiere (see Deadline review), opens Divinity at Regal Union Square in NYC, expanding to Los Angeles next week, with a national rollout on 11/3.
There will be opening-weekend Q&As with Alcazar, Soderbergh, star Stephen Dorff and DJ Muggs.

Horror Film School is a feature in which talent in front of and behind the camera share the ins and outs of creating the biggest onscreen scares.
Eddie Alcazar’s feature film debut “Divinity” is a lot of things scene-to-scene: a love story; an examination of how a father’s legacy can impact his son; a creature feature; a black and white sci-fi throwback; a stop motion masterpiece. Utilizing his low budget as a way to spark creativity, writer and director Eddie Alcazar successfully develops his dystopian vision of the future in which society is obsessed with the titular drug, which promises everlasting youth. Yet the director pauses when asked if he’d consider his dynamic midnight movie to be “weird.”
“I never really think about that too much,” he says. “‘Is this a commercial film or not?’ That’s a big thing I sometimes think about. It depends on...

The future looks more purgatorial than paradisiacal in “Divinity,” Eddie Alcazar’s second feature as writer-director. Like the first, 2018’s “Perfect,” this is a cryptic sci-fi body horror allegory where undeniably arresting aesthetics are nonetheless more a symptom of shallow lookism-based values than the intended critique. Stephen Dorff plays a wealthy recluse peddling the titular mystery serum, which promises eternal youth — though, naturally, there may be drawbacks. This invention attracts attention not just from consumers, but from apparent space aliens who arrive to halt its disturbance of the natural order.
Those looking for midnight-movie eccentricity will find much to enjoy in the black-and-white film’s mix of the trippy, queasy and erotic. But as before, the effortfully quirky elements don’t really add up to a cogent whole, resulting in something a mite too reflective of its creator’s background in commercials and game design — a rarefied, stimulating surface without depth.

Writer-director Eddie Alcazar has undoubtedly infused Divinity with a distinctive look—so much so that the story’s attempt at an excoriation of spectacle and empty pleasure comes off as little more than a reluctant swipe. The style, dialed up from minute one, grows monotonous, all the more so since the film treats substance as an afterthought.
Divinity is a science-fiction tale of the cautionary, finger-wagging variety. In what seems like an alternate version of the 1990s, an aging, laughably naïve scientist (Scott Bakula) aspires to better the world and take the place of God by developing an immortality drug. But the man dies before he can begin testing on humans, and his son, Jaxxon (Stephen Dorff), takes over the family business. Displaying none of his father’s qualms when it comes to harvesting fetal tissue, Jaxxon puts the drug on the market. And as promised by a salvo of pornographic TV commercials,...

Unless Taylor Swift’s concert film truly surprises, we imagine the trippiest film to arrive this year will be landing on the same release date of October 13. Utopia and Sumerian said of their partnership, “Our worlds collided when falling in love with Eddie’s film and vision for Divinity. The film represents a cultural crossroads of film, music, fashion and art. We believe that this partnership represents the beginning of a new era where stories can live on screen and off the screen by blurring the lines between a film itself and the integral components that compose a film’s DNA.”

Utopia and Sumerian have acquired worldwide rights to Eddie Alcazar’s Sundance-premiering “Divinity.”
The film had a memorable premiere in Park City, where there was a medical incident (unrelated to the movie) during its world premiere at the Egyptian Theater. Guests in attendance — who received zines and VHS boxes upon arrival — were also treated to writer-director Alcazar showing up to the event in a terrifying mask.
Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh and starring Stephen Dorff, the experimental film is set in an otherworldly human existence, where the creation of a groundbreaking immortality serum named “Divinity” is wreaking havoc.
Jaxxon Pierce, the creator’s son (Dorff), now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream, and society on the barren planet has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug. However, when two mysterious brothers arrive with a plan to abduct the mogul with the help of a seductive woman named Nikita,...

Boasting an intriguing premise, a compelling ensemble and frequently crisp, handsome filmmaking, Mark Burman’s “Ambush” almost qualifies as an above-average Vietnam-era nailbiter — were it not for the hopelessly below-average performances contributed by the two actors whose names stand tallest in its credits block. Aaron Eckhart and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, usually complex and appealing even in roles as small as these, play characters perched lazily outside the main story while Connor Paolo, Gregory Sims, Jason Genao and others do the narrative heavy lifting that remains after their more sellable co-stars cashed their paychecks.
Nevertheless smarter and more entertaining than one might expect from a small-scale, outwardly familiar story like this, “Ambush” feels like a throwback — mostly in a good way — to the ‘Namsploitation films that companies like Cannon churned out in the 1980s, when stories about the war were at their most commercially popular.

Freeridge, premiering on February 2, shares much of its predecessor’s DNA — and its creators and a few of its actors, too — but strikes out a new story involving a curse that haunts the lead characters. In case you didn’t see On My Block or didn’t watch all of its four seasons, don’t have a Jamal-like meltdown — Freeridge stands on its own. The two shows do, however, have intriguing connections, as you’ll see below… The two shows have different “core fours” On My Block followed four teenagers — Monse (Sierra Capri), Ruby (Jason Genao), Jamal (Brett Gray), and Cesar (Diego Tinoco) — and later five — with the addition of Jasmine (Jessica Marie Garcia) — as they navigated...

Big sales were hardly in short supply at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, with Netflix going wild for “Fair Play,” AppleTV+ shelling out for “Flora and Son,” and Searchlight Pictures snapping up “Theater Camp”, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of superior films still looking for homes.
Of the still-for-sale titles that premiered at this year’s festival, there’s plenty to intrigue all sorts of buyers, from those looking for films with excellent performances that could inspire major awards pushes (like the Jonathan Majors-starring “Magazine Dreams”), those in search of the next big director, hungry genre hounds (see: “Divinity”), and even documentary lovers looking for films with incredible real world impact.
And while it’s still early days, given the incredible assortment of films still looking for homes, we can’t help but tout their allure to all interested buyers. These aren’t just...

Stephen Dorff is slicing through the upcoming “Blade” remake from Marvel.
The star of the original 1998 comic book film, led by Wesley Snipes, criticized the expected PG-13 rating for the new movie, set for a September 2024 release. Dorff’s former “True Detective” co-star Mahershala Ali takes on the “Blade” title role with director Yann Demange now helming the adaptation after Bassam Tariq exited the film two months before the slated production start date. While Marvel executives have boasted “Blade” to be the first MCU “horror film,” Dorff called out the intended PG-13 rating.
“I heard it’s going to be PG-13, which I think might be a mistake, because R-rated comic book movies are the ones that seem to be good and the other ones…” Dorff exclusively explained during the 2023 IndieWire Studio at Sundance, presented by Dropbox. “‘Blade’ is a pretty dark comic so you want to go where it’s supposed to go,...

Divinity can best be described as a “brain trip,” a film that acts as an upgraded ’80s B-movie. Eddie Alcazar’s futuristic, violent drama follows two brothers as they hold a scientist, the man who helped invent an everlasting-life drug called Divinity, hostage in his mansion. At times it’s beautiful to watch, shot in a shadow-focused black-and-white and set amongst a deserted landscape recalling Mad Max. Other times it’s grotesque, highlighting the disgusting physical and financial greed of a drug that’s been flooded across the world. Always, Acalazar’s film is inventive and singular.
Moises Arias and Jason Genao star as the two brothers, largely silent in these ever-present roles. Stephen Dorff portrays drugmaker and millionaire Jaxxon Pierce, the man responsible for so much of society’s excess. The three actors, along with a minimal supporting cast, do enough with Divinity‘s sparse script, willing to do whatever is needed.

Out of all the programming categories at Sundance, it’s Next that proves to be the most divisive. Saved for “pure, bold works distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling,” it’s essentially the home of arthouse cinema. So it should come as no surprise that Eddie Alcazar‘s weird-as-hell Divinity, which just had its world premiere at the festival, falls right into that category.
Set in an alternate universe (or a near future?), Divinity sees scientist Sterling Pierce dedicate his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum named Divinity. Years later, his son Jaxxon Pierce now controls and manufactures the drug, resulting in a hedonistic planet that has been left 97 infertile, but immortal. The sci-fi thriller Divinity, written and directed by Eddie Alcazar (Perfect) and produced by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven), had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend – and an ambulance was called to the theatre when one audience member had an unspecified medical incident. The movie wasn’t interrupted and the individual who suffered the medical incident was treated and cleared, but here’s hoping other screenings of Divinity will go more smoothly. To help you decide whether or not you want to watch Divinity at some point down the line, we have the film’s trailer embedded above.
There are a few different synopses available for Divinity. Here’s one: Set on a barren planet, the retro feature showcases the fight to uncover mysteries behind an immortality-granting drug that has wreaked havoc on society.
Here’s another: Centers on two mysterious brothers, who abduct a mogul during his quest for immortality.

There was plenty of buzz heading into Saturday night’s world premiere of Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre, and by the time the screening ended, there were flashing red lights on the scene as well.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a “medical incident” occurred during the official Sundance Film Festival screening, but despite earlier reports, it was not as serious as it initially seemed. “The individual was treated and cleared,” a rep for the film tells THR. “No one went into labor. And the film was not stopped.”
Another source confirmed it was a “medical incident” but added that the individual was able to walk out and be treated. They are said to be in stable condition.
Deadline first reported news of the medical emergency, indicating that it was a woman who went into labor during the screening. That turned out not to be true...

Update: More details are emerging of the”medical incident” that occured tonight at a Sundance Film Festival screening.
“There seems like some wires got crossed over the walkie-talkies about what actually happened,” a local law enforcement official told Deadline. “But there is no baby being born tonight from the Divinity screening.”
Contrary to earlier reports, it turns out it was not a woman going into labor during a screening of Divinity at the Egyptian Theater on Main Street. Instead, a gentleman had what seems to be some sorth of seizure and quickly left the theater. The screening of the Next category film was not interrupted, we’ve been told.
Although medics were called and promptly arrived, the man in question left by himself, we are now told.

With great power comes great responsibility. And that’s if you’re Spider-Man. But arguably it’s even more true if you’re a popular high school senior with the power to destroy a reputation with a fart, and make a prom king with… well, kind of, the power of that same fart. But more on that later.
Lana Condor (To All The Boys series) stars as high school senior Erika Vu, who due to some casual cruelty from her own personal equivalent of Rachel McAdams’ Regina George from Mean Girls, has spent the last four years being invisible and known as Helen Who. Erika is actually semi-ok with getting through to graduation without being humiliated further but her best friend Gia (Zoe Margaret Colletti) is not and desperately wants them to have some actual fun before school’s out. Erika and Gia are best friends about to graduate from high school in Netflix’s new series “Boo, Bitch” when they realize that they’ve spent most of their formative years being mildly bullied and thoroughly boring. So in a last-ditch effort to leave their mark on high school forever, they decide to party it up right through prom. Unfortunately, the first night they muster up the courage to move past their social anxiety to party and drink, a freak accident leaves Erika dead — and confused.
