When horror artist Rob Sacchetto mentioned on Twitter that his zombie pin-ups were “somehow still sexy” I simply couldn’t wait to check them out. Part of the Jerry Lewis tribute A Mubi Jerrython. Writer, director, star of stage, screen and television, humanitarian, producer, and total filmmaker—Jerry Lewis was all of the above. For the first six years of his career he was also a professional lip syncher. At age twelve, desperate to follow his parents on stage, Jerry began developing a “record act.” A staple on the lower rungs of the Borscht Belt, burlesque, vaudeville, and nightclubs, record acts (a.k.a. dummy acts) were cheap and easy: they consisted of a performer or performers miming away to recordings. Always considered pretty corny, they were the poor stepchildren on the theatrical bills, but there were plenty of budding comics who broke into show business that way. Jerry Van Dyke was another newbie who started his career doing record acts, and much later Andy Kaufman would put his own spin on it mouthing only...

The zany Lewis found an ideal straight man in crooner Dean Martin in 1945. They took their stage act to radio, then television, and then to film, where they appeared together 17 times. A haunted castle, a beautiful ghost and a menacing zombie gave Lewis plenty of comedy ammo in 1953’s “Scared Stiff.” Golf pros of the era Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Julius Boros joined Martin and Lewis in “The Caddy,” which also featured the Dean Martin classic song “That’s Amore.” Don’t let the title “Artists and Models” fool you. Shirley MacLaine co-starred in this 1955 gem about a.

A history of paranormal exterminators in pop culture pre-1984.
Anytime you have a remake or reboot of a popular movie or franchise, fans of the original are going to whine about it. With Ghostbusters, there’s a new level of objection, some of it stemming from the same sort of nostalgic ownership of any beloved property from childhood and some of it arising out of misogyny. The only thing they ought to be concerned with is whether or not fans of the new movie will recognize its roots. And that’s not exclusive to the 1984 movie it’s based on and its 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II.
The Ghost Busters
Most famously, there was already something titled The Ghost Busters, a live-action TV series for children that ran for 15 episodes in 1975 and featured two men and a gorilla hunting mostly spirits and also sometimes famous monsters like Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein’s Creature. The...

Filmed in 1940, director George Marshall’s elegantly eerie spook-fest looks better with each passing year. Bob Hope, in top form, plays a radio star who finds himself in the middle of a Havana-bound haunted-house mystery. Paulette Goddard is his luscious companion and as his valet the great Willie Best gives Bob as good as he gets in his definitive performance as a comic foil. Director Marshall went on to film the remake, Scared Stiff, starring Martin and Lewis (with a cameo from Hope and Crosby).

Above: Danish poster for Geisha Boy (Frank Tashlin, USA, 1958).On March 16 Jerry Lewis turns 90 years old, making him one of the oldest living great filmmakers along with Jonas Mekas (93), Seijun Suzuki (92), Stanley Donen (91), D.A. Pennebaker (90), Claude Lanzmann (90) and Andrzej Wajda (90). And if you have any doubt about his status as one of the great auteurs go and see any of the films he directed at Museum of Modern Art's’s current retrospective: Happy Birthday, Mr. Lewis: The Kid Turns 90.To flip through the films of Jerry Lewis in poster form is to encounter an awful lot of crossed eyes, toothy grins and outsized heads on small bodies (a familiar trope for comedians in movie posters whether it's Fernandel or Cantinflas or Buster Keaton.) That said, Lewis also seems to have inspired illustrators around the world. The French love Jerry Lewis, as the cliché goes, but so, it seemed, did the Germans,...

Lizabeth Scott, the sultry blonde who epitomized cinematic "bad girls" in film noir productions, has passed away at age 92. Scott specialized in playing hard-bitten, self-confident femme fatales usually from the wrong side of the tracks. Her leading men included Robert Mithchum, Burt Lancaster, Michael Caine, Charlton Heston, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Kirk Douglas. Her film credits include "Loving You", "Dark City", "I Walk Alone", "Too Late for Tears", "Pitfall" and "Scared Stiff". Her last screen appearance was in director Mike Hodges' acclaimed 1972 cult movie "Pulp", which was a send-up of the film noir genre. Scott's career began to fade in the late 1950s though she did make occasional appearances in TV series in the following years. In more recent years, she occasionally appeared at film festivals to discuss her work and career. Click here for more. ...

Lizabeth Scott dead at 92: Film noir star of the '40s and '50s Lizabeth Scott, a Paramount star in the 1940s usually cast as film noir heroines, died of congestive heart failure on Jan. 31, 2015, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Scott, born (as Emma Matzo) on Sept. 29, 1922, was 92. (See also: Lizabeth Scott photo at recent The Strange Love of Martha Ivers screening.) Among the two dozen film featuring Lizabeth Scott – whose hair-style and husky line delivery were clearly inspired by Paramount's own Veronica Lake (along with Warner Bros.' Lauren Bacall) – were the following: John Farrow's You Came Along (1945), with Robert Cummings. Lewis Milestone's The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), with Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, and Kirk Douglas. Desert Fury (1947), with Burt Lancaster. Dead Reckoning (1947), with Humphrey Bogart. Pitfall (1948), with Dick Powell. Dark City (1950), with Charlton Heston. The Racket (1951), with Robert Ryan and Robert Mitchum.

I wanted to post something truly terrifying for Halloween this year—the first year I believe that Halloween has fallen on a Movie Poster of the Week Friday since I started—but then I came across this beautiful Boris Grinsson poster. Tu Trembles, Carcasse..., which translates very inelegantly as “You are trembling, corpse” is the French title for the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis comedy horror musical Scared Stiff, which was the 8th of their sixteen collaborations (or 9th of their seventeen if you include their cameo in the Road to Bali, a gag appearance that was reciprocated by Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in Scared Stiff). Scared Stiff was actually a 1953 remake of a 1940 Bob Hope film The Ghost Breakers, made by the same director, George Marshall, and it was made at the height of Martin & Lewis’s success, when they were the biggest double-act in America. It was...

The Pinball Arcade for PlayStation 4 is the best pinball game I have ever played. Let’s just get that out of the way right now. It takes the nearly flawless gameplay from the previous console versions and enhances their graphics with sharper images and gorgeous new lighting effects. If you are even slightly interested in pinball, you need to play this game immediately.
Unlike most video pinball games, The Pinball Arcade uses licensed digital recreations of real-life pinball tables from real pinball manufacturers. Williams, Bally, Stern and Gottlieb tables are all available. This, coupled with pinball physics that are second to none, makes a huge difference in both the authenticity and enjoyment of the experience.
Another nice feature of The Pinball Arcade is the inclusion of a very helpful set of instructions for each table. Pinball tables can be a lot more complex than some people might imagine, and each...

In Story 1, a bride dies at her wedding after dead doves fall to the floor. Mac (Gary Sinise) asks if anyone is superstitious here as it's bad luck for birds to fly indoors. Mac: "It could happen to you, you know." Danny: "What marriage?" Mac: "Love." Danny: "Don't even say stuff like that Mac, it's not even funny." Well someone found it funny and appealing since Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) did find love and marriage, but sadly most of us thought with the wrong woman. Mac notices redness in her eye, caused by external injuries or allergies. She has a slight redness on her skin and Mac thinks she's displaying symptoms of chemical exposure. Mac: "Two dead doves, one dead bride, looks like foul play to me." Ahh so bad you'd think Stella (Melina Kanakaredes) thought of it! Det Kylie Macca (Kelly Hu) returns to investigate the case and has a comment to make,...

Horror is everywhere. You just have to know where to look. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we are no longer forced to wait for the big film companies to burp out a new horror offering for us (which more often than not is a big letdown). Simply by turning to the web, you can find web series created for the sole purpose of giving you nightmares. And we've recently discovered a great one…Scared Stiff.
Producer Douglas A. Plomitallo has been creating episodes of the Scared Stiff web series for the past three years and now has 25 released with more coming shortly. He recently sent a few episodes to the Dread Central offices for our perusal, and from what we've seen, he's got a quality product.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, aka Cassandra Peterson, burst into our living rooms, sporting two of her biggest assets, and single-handedly revitalized the once-tame TV genre of the late-night horror host, bringing a combination of sexuality, humor and no shortage of groan-worthy bad puns. Elvira’s Movie Macabre ran from 1981-84 on Los Angeles’ Khj (now Kcal-tv) and rapidly established her as a star with national syndication.
Feature films followed: Her own starring vehicle Elvira, Mistress of the Dark was released in 1988, followed by Elvira’s Haunted Hills in 2001. Licensing deals, frequent TV appearances, tie-ins galore, video box sets and other TV programs made Elvira America’s favorite sexy and playful horror vamp. (My favorite arcade game in the ‘80s was the Elvira pinball machine, Scared Stiff.)

An axiom from Sherlock Holmes suits this week’s episode, "Scared Stiff," well.
Sherlock once stated that, “when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” And, so, a divine balance was played out between ghost stories and the truth found only in the evidence on CSI: NY.
This episode was a delight, and I’m a little disappointed that it didn’t get to air a little closer to Halloween when it could have really spooked and excited. Then again, I think the paranormal undertones worked well regardless of the season.
The CSIs traded fantastic ghost stories during the first half of the episode and set the tone for creepiness in the rest of the show as the team investigated the death of a woman who was suffocated with no outward signs of an attack.
It was also nice to hear a black widow...

Lindsay Lohan -- Scared Stiff
Sources tell TMZ ... Lindsay Lohan is "freaked out" over her court appearance today ... and possibly with good reason -- she has a big problem in the alcohol education department.
Lindsay was required to complete 13 alcohol ed classes by last Thursday's court hearing. As TMZ first reported, she has only completed 10. We're told Lindsay wanted to make up at least one class on Sunday but the school could not accommodate her.
So Lindsay will appear before an unsympathetic judge still three classes shy, and Judge Marsha Revel has already made it clear ... she was expecting full compliance.
People who interacted with Lindsay over the weekend say she is really scared about today's hearing. LiLo knows the judge will probably prohibit her from drinking or doing drugs ... and that may just be too tall an order.
It's the first time, one source says, Lindsay seems to get how much trouble she's in.

I also brought in real actors and a special effects team to make Family Secret a technically sound high-definition horror movie.”
The story centers on a journalist (Forris Day Jr.) who is reunited with his family after his grandmother dies, and is soon reminded of why he’s stayed out of touch with them in the first place. Unfortunately, his attempts to resever those ties are stymied when his relatives begin to get murdered, apparently by the back-from-the-dead granny, and he becomes the prime suspect.
