When his father dies, 10-year-old Patrick Dennis (Jan Handzlik) goes to live with his father's only sister, Patrick's Auntie Mame (Rosalind Russell), a free-spirited, flamboyant socialite from the roaring 20s. The two immediately fall in love with each other, and Mame makes it her responsibility to rescue him from stuffy, conventionalist people in order to instill in him that "Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!"
Indirectly. Auntie Mame was based on a stage play, adapted from a 1955 novel by American author Patrick Dennis. The screenplay for Auntie Mame was co-written by American playwrights/lyricists Betty Comden and Adolph Green.
