In a lot of the shows, German soldiers are seen wearing large field packs [back packs], even if they are guarding something. Soldiers from all armies are trained to drop their packs before going into action for better maneuverability.
The M-1 carbines carried by Lt. Hanley and various other characters have a prominent bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel, marking them as the later Korean War variant of the weapon. The M-1 carbines issued in World War II were not equipped to mount a bayonet.

The war in Europe did not start on D-Day. It started in 1939. The US involvement started after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. Right after that, the US declared war on Japan and Germany declared war on the US.
