“I felt ashamed of myself for watching. No one should have a chance to see so much desire, so much need for a prize. And so much pain when [it] was not given … I felt disgusted with myself. As though I were attending a public hanging.”
Those were the words of the late Glenda Jackson, as she described to The New York Times her recent experience watching the Academy Awards on television in 1979.
Ironically, it was well after she had already been gifted with two Best Actress Oscars herself. She was not present to accept those honors — for 1970’s “Women in Love” and 1973’s “A Touch of Class.” She was also absent when she was Best Actress-nominated for 1971’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and 1975’s “Hedda.”

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we have a conversation about what it means to be underappreciated. Not underrated necessarily. But underappreciated. And, boy, is Don Cheadle underappreciated. The Oscar-nominated actor has been elevating films in supporting roles since the late ‘80s.
Our guest today is Mitchell Beaupre, senior editor at Letterboxd.
Our B-Sides today include: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Traitor, The Guard, and No Sudden Move. There is also a brief-but-worthwhile tangent on the Scott Caan-directed (!) indie The Dog Problem. Also the Sundance darling Manic from the early 2000s.
We discuss Cheadle’s incredible ability to listen as an actor. There may not be a better active listener working today. We offer some context into legend Steve Martin (who...

After the conclusion of each Academy Awards ceremony, I always go back and rewatch the telecast from start to finish. I want to pick up on all of the things that I might have missed during my initial viewing. I especially like to study the nominees’ reactions each time an envelope is opened — particularly for the major categories when the famous five-camera shot is strategically displayed on the TV screen. I always rewind the moment that each winner is announced, so that I can carefully study the look on each individual’s face both before and after the big reveal.
As we all know, this year’s Best Actress race was the only above-the-line race with any real suspense. That it made it all the more fascinating when reigning Best Actress Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) announced that the torch would be passed on to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.

I throw around the concept of “Grammy darlings” a lot, but what exactly constitutes a Grammy darling? Is it just an artist who doesn’t lose Grammys often, like U2, Adele or Bruno Mars? Let’s go through a few top names.
Beyoncé: Darling
Listen, the most awarded person in Grammy history is definitely a darling. Granted, she has yet to win Album of the Year. However, more impressively, all of her projects have won at least one Grammy. Most have won multiple, including “Dangerously in Love,” “Lemonade,” and “Renaissance.” Beyoncé also gets nominations for pretty much anything she submits, and will likely become the first artist to nab nominations in rap, rock, R&b, dance, pop and country. On top of all that, it’s rare for Beyoncé to miss nominations in the general field, especially with no nominations review committees anymore to potentially force her out.

Margot Robbie’s role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street really goes to show her unparalleled ability to command the screen in a way only she can. But if fans were to revisit the role and delve into its history and things that went behind the scenes, it’s intriguing to note that Don’t Worry Darling star Olivia Wilde, once revealed that she too competed for the same role.
Shockingly, Wilde was indeed in contention before being deemed “too old” for the part, leaving her with a deep yearning for what could have been. Despite her desire, losing the role to Robbie did not create ill feelings between the two, since Wilde claimed she completely detached herself from the character emotionally. However, everything ultimately worked out, as Scorsese later booked Wilde for his drama series Vinyl.

Beach House put together a pretty stellar setlist for their stripped-down show at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia Monday night (December 11th), including some live debuts and a few rarities they haven’t performed in over a decade.
After a surprise opening set from Philly’s own Kurt Vile, Beach House’s Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally did an intimate gig full of songs for the real heads. They performed “Many Nights” and “The Bells” — both from 2022’s Once Twice Melody: Chapter 3 — live for the very first time, and debuted “Devil’s Pool” from last April’s Become EP.
But the real surprises were the throwback rarities, including “Childhood” from their self-titled debut, which they hadn’t played in a whopping 16 years. They also did “Auburn and Ivory,” another Beach House deep cut, for the first time since 2012. And, for the first time since 2016, they performed Devotion’s “D.A.R.L.I.N.G.” and...

Before Olivia Wilde's psychological thriller "Don't Worry Darling" had even hit theaters, it had already stirred up a lot of buzz — and controversy. The rumors and gossip surrounding the film have long since died down, but its move to streaming on Netflix has kicked up a new cloud of conversation.
First, a quick rundown of the drama that was discussed more than the movie itself in its run-up to release. While "Don't Worry Darling" was still in production, the world learned that Wilde had ended her engagement to Jason Sudeikis and entered a relationship with the star of the movie, globally renowned singer and heartthrob Harry Styles. The relationship between Wilde and Styles was seen by some as a violation of on-set power dynamics, and given its proximity to her engagement to Sudeikis, it also looked like the relationship may have begun as an illicit affair.
As if the on-set romance wasn't controversial enough,...

A few weeks back, when she and her friends stopped at a soft drink shop in Lahore, the shopkeeper refused to take money despite their repeated insistence. Finally, he whispered, “I have not seen ‘Joyland’, but know that the movie is being shown across the world. You have done the country proud.”
Walking home, she could not help but smile. She also remembered the time when she and her companions were pulled out of the car and beaten with sticks — their only crime — they belonged to the trans community. Not to mention, the several instances of sexual abuse.
Alina Khan, who played the character of ‘Biba’ in ‘Joyland’, Pakistan’s official entry to the 95th Academy Awards and the first film from the country to premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and win the Jury Prize of the Un Certain Regard section, is just back from a long day before speaking to Ians from Lahore.

CinemaPrabhas’s last hit was ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ in 2017. Post that, the actor has suffered consecutive flops with ‘Saaho’, ‘Radhe Shyam’, and the recently released ‘Adipurush’.In an iconic sequence from Baahubali: The Beginning – elevated by stirring music – Prabhas lifts a huge Shiva lingam on his shoulders and proceeds to place it underneath a waterfall. With this scene, it would seem that the actor symbolically lifted the entire Telugu film industry and showed the entire country what it was capable of. Because of the success of the Baahubali franchise, Rrr was possible, with many more attempts to exploit a bigger ‘pan-India’ market. The franchise was pathbreaking not just for Tollywood but also for Prabhas, who left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry. Nevertheless, the huge success of these films appears to have trapped the actor into focusing only on ‘pan-Indian’ films, none of which have clicked. Prabhas’s latest release Adipurush,...

Prasad was welcomed into the party by Pawan Kalyan who felicitated him with Jsp's scarf. Prasad has produced several hit movies including Chatrapathi, Magadheera, Darling, Nannaku Prematho, Tholi Prema and the recently released Virupaksha. Prasad and Pawan Kalyan had earlier collaborated for Attarintiki Daredi. Following the film’s release, a dispute arose between the two when Prasad allegedly failed to clear Pawan Kalyan’s dues for the film. In 2016, the actor approached the Movie Artistes Association (Maa) over unpaid remuneration dues of about Rs 2 crore. Prasad, however, settled the dues eventually. It remains to be...

It looks like kids’ movies are dominating the box office right now. Mind you, what looks to be the first billion-dollar blockbuster is based on a decades-old video game. But what about the classic fairy tales, you may ask? Not to worry, although it’s fairly young at a spry 121 years, as opposed to the centuries-old Grimm Brothers stories and assorted myths and legends. And it’s also the 70th anniversary of the definitive animated adaptation from the master artists at the “mouse house”. Ugh, you may be thinking, not another live-action retread of a superb cartoon ala the recent Pinocchio (not the Oscar-winner) or the dreary Dumbo. Well, you’re not really correct as this tale began (after its literary roots) on the stage and has been played by flesh-and-blood actors in versions going back to the silent movie days. And so, here’s another version, this time sharing...

The question you may be asking is ‘do we really need yet another take on Peter Pan? Ever since J.M. Barrie published his book “Peter And Wendy” in 1911 there have been countless film, TV, and stage versions of one stripe or another, starting with silents, and of course NBC’s live musical in the 50’s with Mary Martin, and later versions with Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, and just a few years ago another NBC live attempt at it with Allison Williams. Of course there have been big screen spins, neither quite magical, like Joe Wright’s messy 2015 Pan and Spielberg’s overblown Hook with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. Up to this moment even Broadway has a new Tony contender in the farcical take, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. But for me the one version that resonates the most, to this day, is the Disney 1953 animated feature classic.

In the summer of 2016, writer/director David Lowery pulled off what feels like a magic trick in retrospect: he made a Disney remake that was actually quite good. His take on "Pete's Dragon" may not have set the box office aflame, but his tender approach to a story about an orphaned boy in the forest with only a mammoth dragon for a friend resulted in a low-stakes but wonderful family adventure. Of course, the major reason why "Pete's Dragon" worked so well as a remake is that it eschewed almost everything aside from the aforementioned logline that's present in the 1977 original, from big musical numbers to con-artist bad guys. And "Pete's Dragon" was able to eschew those aspects because while the original has some fans, it's by no means one of Disney's biggest titles.
The same cannot be said for "Peter Pan & Wendy," Lowery's latest Disney remake, this time...

“Oh! Darling” was released in 1969 on Abbey Road, the last album The Beatles recorded. Written and sung by Paul McCartney, the song was a nod to a more ‘50s sound, despite all the experimental, futuristic work the band had produced in recent years. It’s one of McCartney’s best-performed songs. But John felt he could have done it better.

McCartney actually first presented “Oh! Darling” during what eventually came to be known as the “Get Back” sessions. McCartney shared the rock-n-roll ballad he’d written, and it was well-received. “The chord structure is very nice,” said George Harrison of the song. “It’s typical of a 1955-type song.”

“Joyland” is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival Spring Showcase
Saim Sadiq returns to the topic of sexual identity and patriarchal structures that strongly dominate his homeland, and to the milieu of the erotic dance theatre he has already explored in his wonderfully accomplished short “Darling”, which won the Orizzonti Competition in Venice 2019. Starring Ali Junejo as Haider, a young man living according to tradition, dancing to the tunes of his father and his hoarse older brother Saleem (Sohail Sameer), “Joyland” speaks of repressed desires of both sexes, strongly divided gender roles, and a never ending chain of compromises someone who doesn't fit into such image has to make.

Julie Christie is an Oscar-winning actress who has been largely absent from movie screens this century, enjoying a semi-retirement that finds her returning for the odd performance here and there. Yet she’s always finding new fans as younger generations discover her cinematic classics. Let’s take a look at 20 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on April 14, 1940, Christie rose to prominence for her work in London, starting with a breakthrough performance in John Schlesinger‘s “Billy Liar” (1963). She won the Oscar as Best Actress just two years later for Schlesinger’s “Darling” (1965), playing a fashion model who sleeps her way to the top. That same year, she shot to stardom thanks to David Lean‘s romantic epic “Doctor Zhivago” (1965), which casts her as a political activist’s wife who falls in love with a physician (Omar Sharif) during the Russian Revolution.

Chris Pine is one of the all-time favorite “Hollywood Chrises,” a star who has acted in a wide variety of genres. Pine has appeared in many fan-favorite movies, from The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement to Wonder Woman. Charming and self-deprecating, Pine never hesitates to make a joke at his own expense.
Notably, in a recent video interview with Esquire, Pine joked about the headline-making hairstyle that he rocked during the press tour for Don’t Worry Darling — even admitting that he finally cut his hair after one particular person told him that he looked like Rachel from Friends.
