Although Richard Harris might have thought he was the target of a prank, Clint Eastwood was certain he wanted the legendary actor for one of his finest films.
Richard Harris passed away in 2002 after leading an extremely successful career as an actor. It has been over two decades since his passing but his legacy is still alive, especially in the hearts of Harry Potter fans. He played Professor Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, the latter of which was released after his death.

Despite being best known as our favorite Hogwarts professor, Richard Harris had many other iconic roles in his portfolio including Gulliver in Gulliver’s Travels, King Arthur in Camelot, and so on. Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven is one such film that might be considered as the best work of his career.

Have you ever witnessed the transformative power of true acting prowess married with masterful direction? In the movie industry, Clint Eastwood’s real genius as a filmmaker crystallized in moments such as trusting the indomitable Richard Harris with his evocative vision in the 1992 Western flick, Unforgiven.
This is especially evident in the scene-stealing role of English Bob—an arrogant, pseudo-aristocratic gunslinger who is anything but what he seems. Harris, widely celebrated for his gravitas as Albus Dumbledore in the early Harry Potter flicks, went down the rabbit hole by delving deep into historical complexities to flesh out his character’s (in Unforgiven) deceptive nature.

Eastwood’s count on Harris’ interpretation added a rich layer of authenticity to Unforgiven, a film that not only challenged the traditional tropes of Westerns but also reflected on the fables we cherish about our heroes & their legacies.

Clint Eastwood retired from the Western genre with the most epic Western film in cinematic history, Unforgiven. It won the Best Picture Oscar and the Best Director Oscar for Eastwood. In his final Western outing, Eastwood deconstructed some of the outdated myths that were popular in Westerns including John Wayne films. Not only did he create the greatest Western movie, he also inspired other filmmakers in the genre with this film.

Clint Eastwood is one of the leading pioneers of actors and filmmakers who popularized the Western genre and elevated it during his prime. The actor’s collaborations with Sergio Leone on the Dollars trilogy changed Westerns forever. Eastwood carried on the legacy of those who came before him and elevated the genre by taking it into unexplored territory with many of his Westerns.

The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider, and Unforgiven were four of the Westerns masterpieces Eastwood made. While the genre has not had the level of popularity it did back then, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone reinvigorated the genre with a fresh and intimate familial story. While Sheridan certainly took inspiration from Eastwood, he did not want to copy one trait of his films.

William O’Connell, whose extensive TV and film acting credits in the 1960s and ’70s included a memorably villainous role on Star Trek and a string of adversaries in the films of his frequent collaborator Clint Eastwood, died January 15 at his home in Sherman Oaks, CA. He was 94.
His death was announced to Deadline by a family friend. A cause was not disclosed.
O’Connell scored a lengthy roster of TV episodic credits in the 1960s, becoming a busy character actor of the day. He had small roles, often nameless characters distinguished only by their job titles — Flagman, Cabbie, Field Rep. #1 — in Highway Patrol, Peter Gunn and The Twilight Zone, also popping up on Dennis the Menace, My Three Sons, The Outer Limits, Bonanza, The Munsters, Batman and The Lucy Show.

The movies seem to come to Netflix through a range of different distributors, including Paramount and Universal Pictures. It comes as Netflix has seemingly been getting greater access to some of the biggest Hollywood studios’ back library of IPs as of late. We’ve seen almost all providers step up their licensing to Netflix in various forms, whether that be through licensing newer movies, older movies like the ones below, or titles from their vast TV catalog.

A 1973 curiosity which has been released under several other titles – most notably Dead People – yet never quite taken off, Messiah Of Evil has recently been restored and is screening as part of the Retrospective strand at the 2023 Dundead film festival. It’s an oddly structured, messy yet atmospheric film with its roots in Hp Lovecraft tales, Night Of The Living Dead and Carnival Of Souls, clearly an influence on a lot of subsequent genre work yet easy for even quite serious fans to overlook altogether. Although the first half is very slow, once it picks up, there’s enough genuinely weird stuff to make you glad you didn’t.

Clint Eastwood's work has spanned the sports, music, drama, and romance genres, but he's best known as the antihero who takes out the trash with fists, bullets, and a few quips to boot. Eastwood took the baton from John Wayne, his spiritual predecessor, and revitalized the western with laconic bravado. Then, with "Dirty Harry," the actor kicked off the loose-cannon cop trope, spawning countless imitators.
However, some critics were less than impressed, especially early on. Pauline Kael wrote, "[He] isn't an actor, so one could hardly call him a bad actor. He'd have to do something before we could consider him bad at it." According to the late Sonda Locke, Eastwood's former lover, the actor dismissed Kael's barbs as psycho-sexual vengeance.

Clint Eastwood knew his way around a Western by the time he took it upon himself to direct one in 1973. "High Plains Drifter" is the follow-up to his filmmaking debut, "Play Misty for Me," and, on the surface it appeared that the actor was giving his audience what they wanted. Eastwood stars as a man with no name who rides into a mining town seeking protection from a pair of outlaw families that killed their sheriff. This might sound like a retread of "A Fistful of Dollars," but Ernest Tidyman's screenplay quickly veers from the formula. When the Stranger accepts the gig, he quickly takes advantage of the townspeople. He abuses two women, installs a bullied little person as the mayor and sheriff, and takes over the village's only hotel.
The difference in "High Plains Drifter" is that the townspeople are anything but innocent. They hired the outlaws to murder the sheriff,...

Clint Eastwood and John Wayne may be Western icons but they didn't exactly see eye-to-eye on the genre that made them both superstars. Back in the early '70s, B-movie maestro Larry Cohen wrote a screenplay called "The Hostiles," intended as a vehicle for both Wayne and Eastwood to co-star. It was an appropriate title; Wayne didn't want to be in a movie with the younger actor, writing a poison pen letter to Eastwood citing his hatred of "High Plains Drifter" as one of the reasons.
Cohen never fulfilled his dream of a film starring Wayne and Eastwood, and it is perhaps little surprise that the two legends didn't hit it off. They represented very different eras of the Western; Wayne was the old guard, an indomitable screen legend of Hollywood's Golden Age and star of dozens of straightforward good guys vs bad guys horse operas, a totem of a...

"Unforgiven" is a Western that speaks not only to the greater state of the genre at the time it was released, but sums up Clint Eastwood's career and the films that would come to define him. How "Unforgiven" manages to be such a provocative and engaging Western with hardly any action shows Eastwood's capability as both an actor and director. The story centers mainly on the forgotten gunslingers of the past who come together for a low-stakes bounty, deconstructing the myth of the legendary gunfighters of the past and the myth of the Western genre itself.
One particular gunfighter that best exemplifies this point is English Bob, portrayed by Richard Harris. In "Unforgiven," English Bob is touted as a dangerous marksman, with a biographer following him around and writing down his exaggerated exploits. It isn't until English Bob is detained by the sheriff, Gene Hackman's Little Bill, that...

The performer was a familiar presence for fans of early television, appearing in Western series as early as 1958 before his turn as General Harlan "Bull" Fulbright in the popular 1980s action series about a team of framed Vietnam vets. The actor's death came from natural causes at the age of 90, with outlets reporting that he passed away in his home in La Quinta, California.
Ging appeared in dozens of film and television roles over his career before his last on-screen turn in 1994. He's perhaps most-known for his turn on "The A-Team," where he played Bull, a general who hunted down the A-Team before being dramatically killed off in the fourth season finale. Another notable on-screen roles was that of Lieutenant Dan Ives in "Mannix," the long-running detective series that starred Mike Connors and began in...

Tommy Morgan, a harmonica soloist who contributed to hundreds of movie and TV shows including “Roots” and “Dances With Wolves,” died June 23. He was 89.
Morgan played on film soundtracks and record dates going back to the early 1950s. His estimated 7,000 recording sessions, according to statistics on his website, suggest that more people have heard his harmonica work than that of any other player of the instrument.
That’s Morgan’s harmonica on Quincy Jones’ “Sanford and Son” theme, Mike Post’s “Rockford Files” theme and the scores for numerous shows including “Maverick,” “The Waltons,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “China Beach,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Family Guy.”
He played on the Emmy-winning score for “Roots” and its sequel, “Roots: The Next Generations.” And his bass harmonica was the signature sound of Arnold Ziffel, the pig on “Green Acres.”
In addition, Morgan played on dozens of classic films including “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,...

Thirty-nine years ago this month, on April Fool’s Day, Kirk Hammett got a call he hoped was no prank: an offer to join Metallica. The guitarist, then age 20, was still playing in Exodus, the thrash-metal band he’d co-founded as a teenager, but he’d fallen in love with Metallica since they first played the Bay Area, where he grew up. So when he realized the opportunity was no joke, he flew to New York, where the band was prepping its debut album, and within two weeks, he was...

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett does some vintage guitar slinging on his new solo song, “High Plains Drifter.”
Borrowing its title from the 1973 Clint Eastwood-starring Western of the same name, “High Plains Drifter” begins with the lonesome pluck of a guitar then expands with horns, strings, piano, and marching drums. Halfway through, Hammett injects a bit of heavy metal into the proceedings, amping up the song’s energy and delivering some characteristically dazzling guitar work.
In a statement, Hammett said he didn’t set-out to write a song that matched High Plains Drifter the movie,...

Whether it’s the Man With No Name, the Outlaw Josie Wales, or the spectral hero from “High Plains Drifter,” Clint Eastwood has played countless iconic roles in the Western genre. The revisionist take on the genre fell out of favor with studios and audiences in the ’80s after Dirty Harry Callahan proved a steadier source of revenue. Still, older cinephiles best know the actor as the archetypal lone cowboy hero.

There’s no putting Clint Eastwood out to pasture.
Clint turns 91 today, and it’s worth celebrating the fact that this Hollywood legend is still turning out work at a faster clip and higher quality than practically anyone in the business. Granted, prolific doesn’t always mean better, and it can be frustrating to see his fans greet every new film as a fresh masterpiece, when only a fraction of them truly deserve the title. But consider that since the turn of the century, he has given us 17 films including “Mystic River,” “Million Dollar Baby,“ “Letters from Iwo Jima” and “American Sniper”.
Five decades ago this year, Eastwood made his directorial debut in “Play Misty for Me,” and for a time, he was dismissed as one of those “actors who directs” — a condescending label typically slapped on dilettantes who did the job just once, like Marlon Brando (with “One-Eyed Jacks...

The Pale Door was one of my favourite films from last year, so that set my menial mind in motion with a mission: watch more Horror Westerns, dagnabbit. A lesser known sub-genre to be sure (especially since Westerns are part of even more vicious cycles of popularity/decline than Horror), but one I’m eager to explore. With that in mind, let’s head over to Italy for Django the Bastard (1969), one of writer/director Sergio Garrone’s (The Hand That Feeds Death) unofficial sequels to the Django series made popular a few years earlier starring Franco Nero. And while this isn’t a full-on merger of the two, this duster sprinkles just enough menace around to offer further proof the two can exist together.
Although Django the Bastard was released in Italy in November, it didn’t hit North America until the spring of 1974, where it could hang third...

Anthony James, the lanky actor who frequently appeared as bad guys in films such as “In the Heat of the Night” and “Unforgiven,” has died at 77. James died of cancer on May 26, according to an obituary announcement from a funeral home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
James’ first film role was in the Best Picture winner from 1967 “In the Heat of the Night,” where he played Ralph, a mischievous and racist diner clerk alongside Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier. His final film role was then in another Best Picture winner, playing Skinny Dubois in Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Western “Unforgiven.”
His villainous roles were so distinctive that Hollywood took to calling similarly creepy and skinny roles as needing an “Anthony James type.” He also starred in films such as “High Plains Drifter,” “The Naked Gun 2 1/2” and “Vanishing Point.”

Anthony James, an instantly recognizable character actor who often played the creepy guy including in Best Picture Oscar winners In the Heat of the Night and Unforgiven, died May 26 of cancer. He was 77.
James had made a single brief appearance on a TV series before Norman Jewison cast him as the killer Ralph in 1967’s In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. The film went on to win five Oscars, including Best Picture.
He would bookend his career with a key role in Unforgiven as the slimy brothel owner Skinny Dubois, who ends up on the losing end of Bill Munny’s gun. That 1992 pic starring and helmed by Eastwood won four Academy Awards, including the marquee prize, and would be James’ final screen credit.
