In a recent podcast interview, actor Jeff Bridges shared his thoughts on the groundbreaking visual effects used in the “Tron” films. Bridges, who played Kevin Flynn in both 1982’s “Tron” and 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” discussed his experience being digitally de-aged to portray a younger version of his character, Clu.
While acknowledging the pioneering nature of the technology, Bridges said he was less than thrilled with how his digital double looked. He told podcast host Josh Horowitz that Clu resembled comedian Bill Maher more than himself. Visual effects artists spent two years meticulously recreating Bridges’ appearance from 1984’s “Against All Odds.” They used body doubles during filming and digitally replaced the head in post-production.
Despite reservations about his digital likeness, Bridges recognized the ambitious efforts to create Clu. “Tron: Legacy” received praise for its special effects upon release in 2010. Directors pushed boundaries by utilizing techniques also seen in James Cameron’s 2009 film “Avatar.

Jeff Bridges wasn’t the biggest fan of his appearance in 2010’s Tron: Legacy.
The Oscar-winning actor recently chatted with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where the host asked him what he thought about his image being digitally scanned for the Joseph Kosinski-directed movie.

Hollywood veteran Jeff Bridges is set to reprise his iconic role as Kevin Flynn in the upcoming Disney sci-fi film Tron: Ares. In a recent interview, the legendary actor reflected on his experiences in the Tron franchise so far. While Bridges enjoyed making 2010’s Tron: Legacy overall, he was less than pleased with how the early digital de-aging technology depicted him in the film.
“I got scanned for Tron: Legacy, but I didn’t like how I looked in the final product,” Bridges told a podcast. According to the actor, the de-aged version of himself in the movie resembled comedian Bill Maher more than his actual appearance. At the time, de-aging an actor through visual effects was cutting edge. But Bridges believes the technology has significantly advanced in the decade since.

Akira is not only famous in the anime and manga sphere but also pop-culture in general. Critics and movie directors alike refer to Akira as one of the greatest and most influential films of the past 30 years. So it’s no wonder fans discredited Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas for turning the film down because it wouldn’t suit western audiences.
According to Manga Entertainment co-creator Andy Frain, Akira shaped modern sci-fi as people know it today. Films like Midnight Special, Looper, The Matrix, Chronicle, Inception, and even the TV show Stranger Things, all borrowed thematically and stylistically from Akira. In fact, two of those five movies even feature a child with destructive telekinetic powers as one of the main plot points.

Paul Mazursky's 1986 comedy "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" is a sharp indictment of ultra-moneyed yuppie culture, which was running rampant during the Reagan administration. Culturally speaking, the mid 1980s saw a redoubled effort to enrich the already-wealthy and encourage rich people to become obsessed with conspicuous consumption. Many, many films and TV shows about Beverly Hills were released at this time, delving deep into the cockroach nest where America's wealthy classes gathered and cannibalized each other.
Prominent among these was Mazursky's film about a rich family, the Whitemans, that recently became wealthy thanks to a wire hanger manufacturing empire. The family are all empty and unhappy. Matriarch Barbara (Bette Midler) is attempting to fill her emptiness with increasingly strange renditions of New Age spirituality, while patriarch Dave (Richard Dreyfuss) is filling his own emptiness by having an affair with the family's live-in maid, Carmen (Elizabeth Peña). Hollywood is filled with stories of actors who live and breathe their characters, becoming almost indistinguishable from the roles they play. These method actors push boundaries to fully embody their characters, often leading to extraordinary performances. However, the dedication that drives such immersion can sometimes cause awkward, if not perplexing, interactions on set, especially in the case of Jared Leto.

Leto is an actor renowned for his method-acting antics, who once again threw himself into the role of Ares for the much-anticipated Tron: Ares. But his approach, which required him to be called “Ares” on set, led to an unusual first meeting with his co-star Jeff Bridges.

Earlier this year, we got word that a new live-action take on the tale of Beowulf is in development with an all-star cast on board. We've seen a number of animated and live-action adaptations of the ancient Danish legend over the years, but this one will be a little different.
Based on John Gardner’s acclaimed novel, Grendel will tell the story from the perspective of the monster, with Jeff Bridges set to provide the voice of the title character, and Dave Bautista on board as the mighty warrior who comes to Danish King Hrothgar's hall to put an end to the creature's rampage, Beowulf.
Now, Collider has unveiled our first look at the design for Grendel courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

The video game adaptation curse may no longer be a thing, but the batting average of adaptations of video games continues to be less than great. While we got the stellar "Fallout" TV series early this year, we also barely got the biggest bomb of the year with the horrendous "Borderlands" movie. That said, we have finally reached a point where video game adaptations are as varied as video game themselves. Shows like "Arcane" and "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" bring their worlds to life with spectacular visuals (telling original and poignant stories that surpass those from their source material), while "The Last of Us" feels instead like a walkthrough video.
Except, there is one thing a shocking number of video game movies have in common, and they share it with anime. When the first "Minecraft" movie trailer dropped, some viewers were surprised to learn the film is about a group of people...

Despite the little we know about Disney’s second anticipated “Tron” sequel, “Tron: Ares,” it’s clear the stars of the film had a good time making it.
Jared Leto revealed in an interview published Monday that the sci-fi franchise’s original star Jeff Bridges, who returns in the 2025 feature as computer programmer Kevin Flynn, had him ruining takes because he couldn’t stop smiling.
“One of the highlights was working with Jeff Bridges. Oh god, he’s just the best,” Leto told Will Arnett, Sean Hayes and Jason Bateman, hosts of the “Smartless” podcast, of working with the Oscar winner. “I had one take where I had to literally say cut, and they’re like, ‘What’s wrong? Did something—?’ And I’m like, ‘No, I just can’t stop f–king smiling.’”
To Bateman then enthusing, “I love that guy,” Leto continued.

Tron: Legacy was a great film for several reasons. Piggybacking off the success and impact of 1982’s Tron, the film came as a surprising sequel to the classic film and ended up gaining even more popularity than its predecessor. While another part starring Jared Leto is set to release soon, many cannot help but wonder what took the sequel so long to develop.

With the second film having been released almost 14 years ago, fans almost lost hope and wondered what caused such a great delay. The director of the 2010 film, Joseph Kosinski, gave an interview where he talked about why another film did not happen immediately after, and his reasoning was quite interesting.

Coming a full 15 years after Tron: Legacy, next year’s Ares stands as one of the most anticipated movies of 2025. We still have well over a year before it hits the big screen, but Jared Leto is already hype for the Tron sequel, taking to Disneyland to ride the Tron Lightcycle / Run.
In a new Instagram post, Leto – who at the time was in Florida for a couple of stops on 30 Seconds to Mars’ Seasons Tour – is seen approaching the Tron ride and declaring, “We gotta go, we gotta do this, man. Holy sh*t! I feel like I’m home!” He also insisted on being on the front cycle, something fans of the ride say is well worth the wait. Judging by the clip, Leto had a pretty damn good time, although some followers did rib him for not taking his grip off the handlebars.

A little while back, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. This summer, the Mouse House released an uncommonly bold MCU movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, which sported an R-rating, and has done blockbuster business. Many are wondering if perhaps this could have the way for Disney to tackle some adult fare, but it wouldn’t be the first time, and maybe now is the time to bring back Touchstone Pictures.
So, what’s Touchstone Pictures...

There are a lot of reasons why "The Simpsons" has lasted as long as it has, but a big one is just how fun those "Treehouse of Horror" anthology episodes always are. Even long past the golden age of the show, these Halloween specials reliably breathe new life into the series; they're funny and sharp, and they allow the show to play around with all sorts of different tones, genres, and animation styles. From the "Death Note" segment in 2022 to the "Coraline" segment in 2017 to the "Tron" segment in 1997, "The Simpsons" has always used these specials as opportunities to show us something we've never seen from them before.
But how'd the writers get the idea for the special in the first place? In a 2018 interview, renowned "Simpsons" writer Mike Reiss explained how he and the other writers were big horror movie fans, name-checking the "Evil Dead" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise in particular.

The Walt Disney Company umbrella is so massive, and encompasses so many characters and franchises, that the definition of a "Disney fan" feels impossible to pin down these days. As I sat in the Honda Arena during this year's D23 fan convention in Anaheim, California, I wondered about the make-up of the audience. How many of them were Marvel folks? How many of them worshipped at the altar of Star Wars? Did some of them still pledge allegiance to good ol' fashioned Disney Animation, with a comparable appreciation for Pixar? And naturally, were there some folks who just loved all of the above?

It will continue pushing boundaries with state-of-the-art visual effects. At D23, attendees got a first look at the film through its debut trailer and announcements about the cast and creative team.

At its D23 fan event in Anaheim, California on Friday night, Walt Disney Studios unveiled a first, exclusive look at footage from Tron: Ares, the third entry in what is now officially the Tron film franchise—which wasn’t a foregone conclusion after Tron: Legacy underperformed back in 2010.
Following up on the ending of that film, in which the AI character Quorra (Olivia Wilde) escaped from the Grid into the real world with Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), Tron: Ares is leaning fully in that direction with the Grid itself invading our world through the machinations of the malevolent program known as Ares (Jared Leto).
Leto and fellow cast members Greta Lee and Evan Peters came onto the D23 stage before the footage was shown, joined somewhat surprisingly by Jeff Bridges, the original Kevin Flynn, who arrived first to warm up the crowd. Even more surprisingly, Bridges also shows up at the end of the footage.

When Tron first appeared in 1982, it became one of the most popular sci-fi films of the era and is now considered a cult classic. A sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews, but that did not stop Disney from producing yet another sequel. Tron: Ares is set to be the next installment in the series and will serve as a standalone sequel to the two previous movies. This is something we have already reported on!
Now, we knew that Tron would be featured at this year’s D23, and Disney really provided us with something to see, as the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Jared Leto-led movie was shown to the attendees of this year’s D23. And while the trailer has not been released online yet, we have some great news for you!

Move over, Daft Punk, because Nine Inch Nails is moving closer to the future of the Tron series, with the industrial band landing scoring duties for the upcoming Tron: Ares.
Even though a lot of their music (the Ghosts albums come to mind) can often play like a soundtrack, Nine Inch Nails has done very little work in that realm, having previously only done the music for video game Quake. With Tron: Ares, Nine Inch Nails will finally give us an idea of all that could have ever been.
Even still, Trent Reznor — who was the sole member of Nine Inch Nails since its inception in 1988 until Atticus Ross officially joined in 2004 — has made an incredibly successful transition from the music studio to the movie studio. With Ross, Reznor first won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network, next nabbing it for Soul (alongside Jon Baptiste). They would...

Walt Disney Studios finally dropped a first look at Tron: Ares at D23 last night, offering a better idea of what's to come in the highly anticipated, latest instalment in the groundbreaking sci-fi franchise. The movie is a follow-up to Disney's 1982 seminal science fiction film Tron and its 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy.
The trailer hasn't been officially released, but as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, fans on X and Reddit have wasted no time sharing footage and photos from the action-packed sneak peek.
It opens with Evan Peters' character, Julian Dillinger, talking about the rise of artificial intelligence and hints at how the Grid will factor into that. Action-packed shots of several characters come next, and unlike blue-tinted previous instalments, this movie's colour palette is very red.

Ever since it was announced that Disney was going back to The Grid for more Tron, fans have been asking the question: who’s going to be on soundtrack duties? One of the most memorable elements of 2010’s Tron: Legacy was its superlative score courtesy of French disco legends Daft Punk – but since the duo disbanded a few years ago, it was always a slim chance that they’d return for Joachim Rønning’s upcoming Tron: Ares. But now we have an official answer as to who's lined up, and it’s a particularly exciting one.
As confirmed at Disney’s D23 Expo, the Ares soundtrack will be coming from none other than Nine Inch Nails – the industrial icons known for blending rock with ear-rattling electronic production. So, perfect for a Tron film, then.

Who's ready for some more biodigital jazz, man? Throughout its 40-plus year existence, the "Tron" franchise has always been a little too far ahead of the curve for its own good. Steven Lisberger's original 1982 "Tron" film was notoriously overlooked by the Academy in spite of its groundbreaking computer-generated visual effects, and even Stan Lee didn't really get what Lisberger was going for. When Joseph Kosinski's "Tron: Legacy" arrived 28 years after that, it similarly pioneered digital de-aging and the legacy sequel formula at a time when neither of those things were in vogue. Nevertheless, the forward-looking sci-fi property has gained a loyal following over the decades, which explains why we're currently awaiting a third movie in the form of "Tron: Ares."
Whereas the original "Tron 3," the canceled "Tron: Ascension," would have been more of a direct continuation of "Legacy," this new film shifts its focus to the eponymous...

Nine Inch Nails will score the upcoming Tron movie, Tron: Ares, Disney announced during its D23 presentation on Friday.
Nin members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have become among the most celebrated composers in the film industry over the past 15 years, winning two Academy Awards and numerous other accolades. However, Tron: Ares is the first film score specifically attributed to Nine Inch Nails. It also marks the first project from Nin since the release of their ambient instrumental music collections, Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts, in 2020.
In an interview earlier this year, Reznor and Ross revealed that they had several projects in the works, including a TV show with The Bear creator Christopher Storer; a film with horror director Mike Flanagan; a clothing line called Memory Fades; and a collaboration with Epic Games involving the Uefn ecosystem Epic has built around Fortnite. “Tron: Ares” arrives next year, following in the footsteps of 1982’s “Tron” and 2010’s “Tron: Legacy.” And at D23 on Friday the first footage from the movie was revealed. And it is a doozy.
The movie stars Jared Leto as the titular character, a program who escapes the computerized video game world of the Grid for our own world. The footage began with Evan Peters’ Julian Dillinger, who noted on stage, “You know the name Dillinger doesn’t mean great things for those on the Grid. Dillinger is giving a speech about how we are looking for life in the stars but that we should have been looking inside – inside the Grid that is.”
We see Leto crawling into our world. At first you see him looking around but there are more ominous shots – a sequence (maybe a chase?) in the snow, a destroyed downtown area, and Greta Lee, as...

It use to be we’d be transported into the video game world of Tron. Well, in Tron: Ares as Evan Peters’ villain Julian Dillinger says in the clip that was unveiled at D23 on Friday, “We’re not going there, they are coming here.”
The light cycles of Tron are seen speeding through city streets, leaving laser thin wakes behind them, and splicing cars on the street in half. Jared Leto plays the Tron-like character, clad in red while Greta Lee plays a “brilliant programmer whose great work has Ares coming into the world.” The actress was on stage with Leto, Peters and Jeff Bridges on the Honda Center stage.
Leto in the voice-over of the trailer says, “I came here to find something…something important.” We see him zooming on a light cycle with Lee’s character.

Our latest review of new and recent books about (or connected to) cinema includes an extraordinary look at transness in film; memoirs from Griffin Dunne, Jon Chu, and Susan Seidelman; and several new books on music, highlighted by the latest from the great Steven Hyden. Plus, we run down some noteworthy novels worth checking out before the summer’s end. Let’s hold on to the season a bit longer, shall we?

The history of visual effects, like every other aspect of the arts, exists on a spectrum. Yet there are undeniably milestone works that push a given medium forward, whether through sheer force of popularity and influence, or through innovation, or sometimes both. "Tron," a film made by Steven Lisberger in 1982, is one of those milestone movies. Although it began as a modest success at the box office, it quickly gained a cult following thanks to its application of innovative techniques, particularly its moments of computer animation. Despite those moments only amounting to about 15 or 20 minutes of screen time, it proved that computer graphics imagery could be viable in cinema, leading to the dominance of CGI that we see in fantasy and sci-fi films today.
Yet one of the problems with innovation is that, before new technology is proven to work, most folks either can't see how it'll work, or instinctively...

Big Brother 26 contestant Quinn Martin plans to use his deep fake power in an unexpected way. This plot twist has left fans wondering whether his strategy is genius or madness.

Disney needs your money. While their film slate up until Q3 was a disaster, and their streaming business is not yet profitable, they have been using the theme parks to offset losses. How? By squeezing customers for more money, taking free services, and making guests pay more and more for them. Now, here comes Genie+ 2.0, called “Lighting Lane.”
The latest iteration of paid FastPass+ launched today, and the prices are about what we expected. Like park tickets, these prices fluctuate depending on demand and crowd level. Disney needs every last penny from your pocket, especially now that they have to pay cast members more, and their stock is in the gutter.
If you want to get on more rides and avoid the ridiculous lines they perpetuate to ensure you pay more, you need to pay more. Some attractions that require a virtual queue can also be obtained for a price.

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting 11 theme park attendees reported dizziness, chest pain, or lost consciousness that required hospitalization over a three-month period, according to a Florida state document.
The 11 incidents occurred at Disney World and Universal in Florida, including four at their water parks, between April and June, the media outlet reported.
Florida theme parks must self-report to the state each quarter guest injuries that require at least 24 hours of hospitalization.
High-speed roller coasters, in-the-dark rides, whitewater rafts, and attractions with motion-simulators caused most of the recent injuries.
No injuries were reported by SeaWorld Orlando, Legoland Florida in Winter Garden, or Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.
The state does not monitor updates after the initial assessments. An Orlando Sentinel investigation last year said that descriptions of the injuries are often vague or inaccurate.
Disney reported one incident in April – a 60-year-old man who experienced chest pains after riding Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

Starring Daisy Ridley, cross-Channel swimming drama Young Woman And The Sea will be available to stream on Disney+ from 19th July.
Having enjoyed a brief yet welcome release in cinemas on the 31st May, director Joachim Rønning’s swimming biopic Young Woman And The Sea is to appear on Disney+ from the 19th July, it’s been announced.
Starring Daisy Ridley as Gertrude Ederle, the drama’s about the champion swimmer’s attempt to cross the English Channel in 1926, and the societal barriers – namely outright sexism – she had to cross before she could so much as put on a hat and goggles.
It’s an effervescent, superbly-acted little piece, with standout performances from Ridley as well as Christopher Eccleston as a conniving coach and Stephen Graham as veteran swimmer, Bill Burgess.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer struggled for almost a decade to get the film made, but the whole thing finally came...
