Overflowing with insight; stuffed with revelatory interviews and anecdotes and archival footage; as bursting with flavor as a baked ziti; and as immersive, in its way, as the show itself, “Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos” is Alex Gibney’s sensationally artful and engrossing two-hour-and-40-minute documentary about the greatest show in the history of television.
If you’re a fanatic for “The Sopranos” (and who isn’t?), you probably already know a fair amount about how the show came to be, and “Wise Guy,” for a while, treads familiar ground. The film is framed as a profile of the show’s visionary creator and showrunner, David Chase (the opening credits redo the driving-into-Jersey “Sopranos” credits with Chase in the passenger seat), who is interviewed by Gibney on an exact mock-up of the set of Dr. Melfi’s psychiatrist office, a joke/stunt that recedes into the background yet never loses its playful resonance,...

The late, great Ray Liotta had a lot of memorable credits to his name throughout his career, but it's probably safe to say his best role was as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas." In fact, we said just that when we ranked the actor's career right here. Acting against heavy hitters like Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, Liotta had to essentially carry the entire movie — he's in practically every single scene and serves as the narrator and guide into the world of the mafia that Scorsese was presenting (adapted from the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi). Henry is a gangster; a criminal; a violent man. In a lesser actor's hands, this character might be detestable. But Liotta is able to make us have sympathy for Henry; we're caught up in his story, and when the third act of the film brings the character to the lowest moments of his life,...

While the versatile filmmaker Martin Scorsese has helmed various genres, the gangster drama is the one that put him on the map, starting with the Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro starrer Mean Streets. The film’s success led to him being the master of the genre with films like Casino and The Irishman.
However, before he became the master of the genre, he was reportedly apprehensive about following through on one of his best films, Goodfellas. Scorsese was reportedly hesitant to tackle the genre again after Mean Streets and reportedly went to The Godfather star Marlon Brando, who surprisingly advised against pursuing it.

Martin Scorsese has been making films since the ‘60s and debuted with Who’s That Knocking On My Door and struggled for a bit before finding his breakthrough with the gangster film Mean Streets.

For Henry Hill, the appeal of becoming a mobster is simple. “They weren’t like anybody else. They did whatever they wanted,” he explains in the famous monologue at the start of Goodfellas. “They parked in front of hydrants and never got a ticket. When they played cards all night nobody ever called the cops.”
Hank might also add to the list that they get the best deals at the grocery store, something that happens to wiseguy Vinnie Antonelli in the comedy My Blue Heaven. Noticing an unattended pricing gun, Vinnie gives himself a huge markdown on a bunch of steaks. When the cashier totals the haul at less than $20, he’s too impressed with the $100 bill Vinnie handed him to call foul. Even the manager only stops Vinnie to give the former mobster a comment card, saying nothing of the steal of a deal that just occurred.

Tony Ganios, the actor who made his film debut in Philip Kaufman’s 1979 coming-of-age comedy-drama The Wanderers and played audience favorite Anthony ‘Meat’ Tuperello in the 1980s Porky’s sex comedy franchise, died Sunday following surgery at a hospital in New York. He was 64.
His death was announced on social media by his fiancée, Amanda Serrano-Ganios, who said that the actor fell ill last week, was hospitalized Saturday with a spinal cord infection, and passed away Sunday of heart failure.
Cast as one of the Bronx Italian-American street toughs in the 1963-set The Wanderers, based on the novel by Richard Price, Ganios became, for much of the ’80s, a go-to actor for directors looking for a touch of East Coast flavor. Ganios re-teamed with his Wanderers co-star Ken Wahl for a recurring role as a mob lawyer on Wahl’s 1987-90 crime series Wiseguy.

Rod Holcomb, an Emmy-winning TV director of “ER,” “Lost” and other series, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 80.
Holcomb was best known for directing both the pilot and the series finale of “ER,” winning an Emmy for that farewell episode in 2009. He was nominated four four Primetime Emmys over his career, and also nominated for three DGA awards — winning one in 1995 for the “ER” pilot. Holcomb directed 21 pilots over his career, with the remarkable track record of 15 going to series.
“Every good director will elevate the material on the page. His job is to elevate it visually, to give it the weight of an art form,” Holcomb told Variety in 2011. “In a way, it’s easier to determine with a show that you know very well as a viewer, and if you know the contours and the voice of the show, then you can more easily answer some key questions.

Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" turns 34 this year. The movie itself spans more than three decades, chronicling Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) life as an associate in the New York mob — Hill's life story was first told to the public by the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the "Goodfellas" script with Scorsese.
"Goodfellas" is a cinematic shot of adrenaline, cut with vivacious energy by Thelma Schoonmaker and scored with classic rock to reflect the anti-authority glamour of mid-20th century gangsters. No matter if you watch it in all its sprawling glory or just sample clips, it's enjoyable — nay, irresistible.
Since "Goodfellas" packs so many years into two-and-a-half hours, it has a huge cast. So much time has passed since "Goodfellas" premiered in theaters and left its mark on crime cinema that not all of these actors are still with us. Miraculously, though, quite a few of them...

By making a movie about the mafia, Martin Scorsese was treading into treacherous territory — after all, any film he made would certainly drawn comparisons to Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather films. But Scorsese’s 1990 film Goodfellas was nothing short of a masterpiece, one that film critic Roger Ebert said surpassed The Godfather as the best movie ever made about organized crime. Goodfellas was based on the Nicholas Pileggi novel Wiseguy, and star Robert De Niro, who spoke to us when the film originally opened, told us that both the book and Pileggi himself were incredibly helpful when it came to informing his critically acclaimed performance in the film. Calling all Emmy voters: The men of “Better Call Saul” are staging a comeback.
Jonathan Banks earned his first Emmy nomination for portraying the dangerous and methodical fixer Mike Ehrmantraut on “Breaking Bad” in 2013. Since then, he’s earned four additional Best Drama Supporting Actor bids for his portrayal of the character on the AMC series’ acclaimed prequel “Better Call Saul.” In 2015, his first bid for the spin-off entered him in the history books: He became the first actor to be nominated in the category for three different shows (he received a nomination in 1989 for his performance as Frank McPike on the CBS drama “Wiseguy”). Six years later, in 2021, Giancarlo Esposito, Banks’ co-star on both “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” became the second actor to do it after earning bids for playing drug kingpin Gustavo Fring on both series before snagging a nom for his turn as the villainous...

Although “Schmigadoon!” is now campaigning for this year’s Emmys as a scripted variety series, its cast members can still be nominated as comedic actors. According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer most likely to score a supporting bid for the Apple TV Plus program’s second season is Jane Krakowski, who plays the show-stopping role of singing lawyer Bobby Flanagan. With Best Comedy Supporting Actress notices for “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” already under her belt, she could now make Emmys history as the first actress to be nominated in the same category for regular performances on three different continuing series.

Beloved by moviegoers for decades, the mafia film genre typically centers around key players that make up the world of organized crime in various contexts, locations, and cultures, with a sprinkle of family life and a generous serving of violence included in the storylines. The genre traces back to the early beginnings of film, but was popularized by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese in the 1970s and beyond.
Over the years, the mafia genre has continued to defy stereotypes and include elements from different film genres, like suspense or comedy. The latest mafia-related film, "Mafia Mamma," which hit theaters on April 14, presents a traditional look at the Italian mafia, with a refreshing, comedic tone delivered by Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. In the film, Colette's character, Kristin, unexpectedly inherits her estranged grandfather's mafia empire in Calabria, Italy, and has to assume the role of mob boss...

Following years of success via its auteur-driven comedies, the network that brought us “Damages,” “Justified” and “The Americans” finally has a new drama series reminiscent of the Emmy-winning shows that once anchored its lineup. “The Old Man,” which premiered last June, follows Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges), a dangerous and mysterious man who years ago fled the CIA for reasons unknown. Forced out of hiding after an assassin tracks him down decades later, he finds himself on the run from John Lithgow’s Harold Harper, a one-time compatriot who is now the FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. The result is a thrilling series about two aging men whose relationship spans decades and defies explanation. And it could land at least one of its stars an Emmy nomination more than a year after its debut.

TV loves itself some mobsters. There’s no getting around it. From Tony Soprano to Nucky Thompson to Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano, we’re enchanted by the bad guys and what they bring to the table. Shows like “The Sopranos,” “Peaky Blinders” and “Boardwalk Empire” – as well as “The Untouchables” in the early 1960s – have captivated us and generated plenty of awards attention in the bargain.
And now here comes another show with malice in its heart, if a wink in its eye, looking to compete for some Emmy attention: “Tulsa King,” the Paramount+ series that launched its first season last November and is plotting to enter production on season two soon (likely early this summer). It’s a crime dramedy set in Tulsa, Oklahoma that stars Sylvester Stallone in his first scripted starring role on TV.

Cosmo Jarvis, the Brit actor best known for roles in features including Lady Macbeth, Calm With Horses and the upcoming FX original Shogun, has joined the cast of Wise Guys, the upcoming mobster drama from Barry Levinson and starring Robert De Niro.
The Warner Bros. film, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and now shooting, sees De Niro in the dual roles of Italian American crime bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, who ran their respective families during the 20th century. In 1957, Genovese tried — and failed — to assassinate Costello, who was ultimately injured and attempted to retire from the mafia. A gangster film starring Robert De Niro sounds like a big win for the movies. But do you know what a bigger win is? A gangster film starring not one but two Robert De Niros. The veteran actor is set to play two major roles in Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson's next project from Warner Bros. Discovery, a feature film titled "Wise Guys." The movie fictionalizes two real-life Italian-American crime bosses from the 20th century. De Niro has more than enough understanding of the genre; he has portrayed multiple gangsters throughout his career, from "Mean Streets" to "Goodfellas" and "The Irishman." If there's any actor who can play two leading gangster roles in the same movie, it's De Niro, without a doubt.
It's safe to say that "Wise Guys" is shaping up to be a highly-anticipated project — so we've compiled everything there is to know about it.

In 2015, Jonathan Banks set a new precedent with his first of four Emmy nominations for “Better Call Saul,” as it made him the first man ever recognized for supporting performances on three different drama series. His first two career bids came for his featured turns on “Wiseguy” (1989) and “Breaking Bad” (2013), with the latter show being where he originated his “Better Call Saul” role of Mike Ehrmantraut. His five most recent unsuccessful outings make Ehrmantraut one of the four most overlooked characters in the history of the Best Drama Supporting Actor category.
At the time of his first “Better Call Saul” nomination, the 68-year-old Banks was his category’s 11th oldest nominee ever. His latest bid at age 72 moved him to seventh place on the list, but he has since been pushed to 10th. Nine actors over 75 rank ahead of him, with the top two being the only octogenarians to ever compete for the award.

His latest bid at age 72 moved him to seventh place on the list, but he has since been pushed to 10th. Nine actors over 75 rank ahead of him, with the top two being the only octogenarians to ever compete for the award.

Robert De Niro and Robert De Niro will star in Warner Bros. Discovery first big bet: a mafia picture
While Warner Bros. Discovery has been busy fretting over their DC Comics slate—deleting the already-completed “Batgirl” film while hoping Ezra Miller’s intention to seek mental health help will bring enough stability to successfully launch “The Flash” next year—the newly-formed entertainment entity is placing a bet on another American superhero: Robert De Niro.
And it’s not just a bet, they’re doubling down.
The first original film produced with David Zaslav as the top executive at the studio will feature the two-time Oscar-winner (and eight-time nominee) in two roles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Wise Guys” concerns the true mafia war between Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, and De Niro will play both men. This will be an acting feat like Jeremy Irons in “Dead Ringers,” but trading gynecological instruments for zabaglione.
The script comes from a guy who knows a thing or two about the New York City mob: Nicholas Pileggi,...

It's a whole new era for Warner Bros. Discovery, and after being dogged by controversy after controversy for the last several weeks, the studio's focus can finally go back to, you know, the business of funding, making and releasing movies. The first original production under the newly-merged studio, however, can't help but bring back memories of Warner Bros.' golden years with the upcoming project "Wise Guys." In a fascinating wrinkle, two familiar faces with ties to "Goodfellas" will be significantly involved.
As much as audiences have gravitated towards superhero movies these days and Westerns before them, perhaps no genre quite manages to compare to the prestige and sense of storytelling as the classic gangster epic. Legendary movie star Robert De Niro cut his teeth on these movies, rapidly rising through the ranks to become one of the world's most famous actors after performances in classics like "Mean Streets," "The Godfather Part II,...

Warners’ first original feature of the Warner Bros. Discovery era is here … and it’s a period mobster drama fronted by two Hollywood veterans.
Returning to the genre that made him a household name, Robert De Niro will star in Wise Guys, a feature intended for theatrical distribution that will be directed by Barry Levinson, the filmmaker known for 1980s classic Rain Man and movies such as Wag the Dog.
Nicholas Pileggi, who coincidentally authored Wiseguy, the 1985 book that was the basis for the 1990 De Niro-Martin Scorsese crime classic, Goodfellas, wrote the script. Irwin Winkler, best known for producing the Rocky movies as well as being a producer on Goodfellas, is a producer.
The project is centered on Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, two Italian-American crime bosses that ran their respective families in the middle of the 20th century. In 1957, Genovese...

What’s telling about Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” is how few studios were willing to take on its $159-million price tag. Only one company stepped up: Netflix. Since the dawn of Hollywood, the major studios have been willing to gamble on grand ambition and spectacle, from 1927’s first Oscar-winner “Wings” and David Lean’s desert epic “Lawrence of Arabia” to the more recent “Titanic” and fantasy trilogy “The Lord of the Rings.” Such all-in bets may make their backers lose sleep, but the movies can pay off handsomely, both at the box office and the Oscars.
Without risk, there’s no reward. The studios may be right that Scorsese’s sprawling 209-minute historical epic — which covers some of the same struggles among the Italian mafia, Teamster chief Jimmy Hoffa, and the Kennedys as Oliver Stone’s “JFK” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” trilogy — might not sustain enough...

The Emmys are a notoriously unsentimental bunch, as we saw last week with the guest categories, passing over overdue favorites Phylicia Rashad and Adam Sandler. Several actors went into Sunday’s Emmy telecast with numerous losses under their belt, hoping this may finally be their time to go from bridesmaid to bride. Would Sandra Oh finally find herself wielding an Emmy statuette? Could actors on the last seasons of their shows get a farewell hug, like Lena Headey? (See full list of Emmy winners.)
The TV academy has gone for a few performers in their final seasons, like Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) and Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”), but there are also countless instances of actors never winning for iconic performances, like Steve Carell in “The Office,” Martin Sheen in “The West Wing” and Amy Poehler in “Parks and Recreation.” Unfortunately, there were no instances of majorly overdue actors winning at this year’s Emmys,...

For Jonathan Banks, the role of Mike Ehrmantraut is the gift that keeps on giving. This summer Banks earned his fourth Emmy nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actor for “Better Call Saul,” the fifth he’s received overall for this role as an ex-cop turned drug cartel fixer. He previously competed in 2013 for the show’s predecessor, “Breaking Bad,” and additionally contended in the category for “Wiseguy” in 1989.
For his Emmy submission, Banks has chosen the season four finale, “Winner.” In this installment, Mike discovers that foreman Werner (Rainer Bock) has escaped from the construction site to spend time with his wife. In an attempt to save his life, he tries to locate him before Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) and his men do. But by the time he finds him, Werner has mistakenly given information about the underground drug lair to one of Gus’s enemies (Tony Dalton) over the phone.

Jonathan Banks might finally win an Emmy for playing Mike Ehrmantraut — but in a category not many of us expected: Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series Actor.
As Gold Derby exclusively revealed, in addition to submitting Banks in his usual category of Best Drama Supporting Actor for “Better Call Saul,” AMC is also entering him in the short form actor race for “Madrigal Electromotive Employee Training,” a “Better Call Saul” companion online series that is also being submitted for Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. The show (watch above) features Mike offering tips and sharing his wisdom to new Madrigal employees. “Madrigal” is the second season, if you will, of “Saul”‘s online training series; the first, “Los Pollos Hermanos Employee Training,” which starred Giancarlo Esposito‘s Gus Fring and aired alongside Season 3, won Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2017.

Jonathan Banks holds a pretty cool Emmy record: He’s the only person to be nominated for three different shows in Best Drama Supporting Actor. But he might add a less fun one this year: He could tie the record for most nominations without a win in the category.
The dubious honor is currently held by Ed Begley Jr. who went 0-6 for “St. Elsewhere” from 1983-88. Begley is tied with Will Geer (“The Waltons”), Bruce Weitz (“Hill Street Blues”) and Jimmy Smits (“L.A. Law”) at six nominations, but the other three have all won.
At 0-5, Banks earned his first nomination back in 1989 for “Wiseguy”; Larry Drake (“L.A. Law”) won. His next one would come 24 years later for playing Mike Ehrmantraut on “Breaking Bad,” but he fell to Bobby Cannavale (“Boardwalk Empire”). His last three bids have been for reprising Mike on the “Breaking Bad” prequel spin-off “Better Call Saul...

What do four disparate entertainers such as Jack Lemmon, Denzel Washington, Kevin Spacey and Robert De Niro have in common besides being actors. The quartet won a supporting Academy Award before claiming gold for a lead. Three-time nominee Christian Bale, whose uncanny transformation into Vice President Dick Cheney is the most acclaimed element of Adam McKay‘s satirical biopic “Vice,” could join that club if he wins a companion Academy Award to go with his supporting statuette for his crack-addicted boxer in 2010’s “The Fighter.” He previously was nominated for Best Actor for his con man in 2013’s “American Hustle” and for his supporting part as an anti-social whiz at numbers crunching in 2015’s “The Big Short,” also directed by McKay.

I had never heard of this comedy-thriller, and the good news is that it’s a pleasant surprise, thoroughly enjoyable. The toughest kind of filmmaking must be making comedy seem effortless, and that’s what Eric Blakeney does in this quirky, near-screwball take on the done-to-death drug deal undercover thriller. Liam Neeson is sensational, and producer Sandra Bullock is at her most charming. Even the flatulence jokes are funny.

Vanessa Marquez, an actress best known for her role as a nurse on “ER,” was shot and killed by South Pasadena police on Thursday, authorities confirmed on Friday.
Officers were called to Marquez’s home in the 1100 block of Fremont Avenue by a landlord to check on her welfare. When the officers arrived around 12 p.m., she was suffering from seizures and appeared unable to take care of herself. Officers called out paramedics and a mental health clinician, and continued to talk with her. After about 90 minutes, Marquez, 49, armed herself with a Bb gun and pointed it at the officers, causing them to open fire, said Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
South Pasadena, a municipality separate from neighboring Pasadena, is eight miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

“Midnight Cowboy” actress Georgann Johnson died June 4 in Los Angeles. She was 91.
With a career spanning six decades, the Iowa native first appeared on television in 1950s commercials, later appearing opposite James Dean in TV drama “Life Sentence” (1953).
Johnson’s live TV performances include the original production of “Bang the Drum Slowly” (1956) with Paul Newman as well as playing Tony Randall’s wife in “Mr. Peepers” from 1952 to 1955.
The actress recalled: “It was a terribly good and terribly funny show and yet very gentle. I realized how much a special thing it was at the time.”
Her dream of singing in a Big Band came to fruition in Steve Allen’s “Songs for Sale” (1950-1952), a talent show for aspiring songwriters. Peggy Lee performed Johnson’s song, which won the prize and made an impression on Allen. He later cast her in the live television musical “The Bachelor.” In 1954, Johnson...

Mob classic “Goodfellas” came out in 1990. Martin Scorses’ adaptation of Nicholas Pileggi’s book “Wiseguy” tells the story of real life mob associate Henry Hill and his life in the mob from 1955 to 1980 before he testified against his friends and lived in exile under the Federal Witness Protection Program. Scorses often uses music in his movies to depict the time and the emotion of the moment. The “Goodfellas” soundtrack features 43 classic songs from the 1950’s through the 1970’s. Often, Scorses will use beautiful music alongside grisly scenes to draw our emotions into the scenes. He also uses

Jerry Lewis, who became a household name as one-half of legendary duo Martin & Lewis, has died at the age of 91.
In a statement attributed to Lewis’ family, the Las Vegas Review-Journal‘s John Katsilometes reports that Lewis died of natural causes on Sunday morning, surrounded by loved ones at his Las Vegas, Nev. home.
Lewis, an iconic comedian in his own right, first teamed with Dean Martin in 1946, becoming one of the most successful acts in the country before their highly publicized split in 1956. They appeared together in such films as My Friend Irma, The Caddy, The Stooge, Artists and Models and Pardners.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who has been the best guest star on a scripted show?
Tim Surette (@timsurette), TV.com
Wayne Brady showing up in body armor and riding a horse on Syfy’s post-apocalyptic disaster disaster “Aftermath” needs to be mentioned somewhere in this critics’ roundup, so here it is. But I’ll point out two from intentional comedies that come to mind. Timothy Olyphant’s short run on “The Grinder” as himself was fantastic and if I didn’t mention this my coworker Kaitlin would kill me. But my pick goes to David Duchovny, also as himself, on “The Larry Sanders Show.” We’d largely known Duchovny for...

Los Angeles’ American Cinematheque has announced it will host “A Tribute to Irwin Winkler,” celebrating the legendary filmmaker whose frequent collaborations with Martin Scorsese have led to several critically acclaimed and iconic films over nearly four decades spent together. The pair have worked together frequently — and quite successfully — over the years, and their shared credits include “New York, New York,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
The three-day event will feature showings of their past films, capped off by a rare, in-person conversation between the two Oscar winners. On Saturday, December 3, Winkler and Scorsese will be on hand at the Egyptian for an 80-minute conversation about their past work together, along with discussion about their latest project, “Silence,” which arrives on December 23 after a twenty-eight-year development period.
