Goonies never say die! But we’re still interested in what else they have to say. And this will all come true for die-hard fans of The Goonies, as a feature-length documentary on the making and legacy of the 1985 adventure favorite is currently in development through a Kickstarter campaign. With less than two months until the campaign ends, none other than Mikey Walsh, Sean Astin, is calling for any remaining support there is and ensuring he’ll take part.
Posting on social media to promote the documentary – currently titled Life After The Goonies – Sean Astin wrote, “I enthusiastically support this Goonies documentary. I hope you all can donate a few bucks so it can get made. I can’t wait to participate. I can’t wait to see the interviews she’s already done…in particular with Richard Donner our Director. It remains to be seen if Neil Marshall will ever get the chance to direct the Dog Soldiers sequel or the Predator movie he wants to make – but he’s not just waiting around to be given those opportunities. His latest film is the action thriller Duchess, which Saban Films will be giving a digital and VOD release on August 9th… and with that date just one month away, a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Marshall wrote the Duchess screenplay with Charlotte Kirk, who also stars as the title character, a tough, working-class, petty criminal who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. Determined to seek retribution she launches into a vicious and violent pursuit for vengeance.

In the world of Hollywood, many directors and filmmakers have come and gone, but only a few have managed to win the hearts of the audience with their distinct cinematic prowess. The best example of this statement would be Martin Scorsese, who not only revolutionized cinema but also brought forth a string of movies that even new-age directors cannot stop appreciating.
Mia Goth in MaXXXine || Ti West’s X account
While the director had his fair share of success, he also didn’t shy away from promoting new talent. The most recent example is Ti West’s horror trilogy, which has received nothing but praise from the Goodfellas director.

Known as the industry’s acclaimed giant, Martin Scorsese made his name synonymous with quality movies of all genres. His masterpieces include psychological thrillers Taxi Driver (1976) and Shutter Island (2010), crime drama Goodfellas (1990) and last year’s Western hit Killers of the Flower Moon.
However, even if you think that Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle is literally you, you may have missed Scorsese’s earlier work that also deserves your attention. This unfairly forgotten 1973 drama can beat his most popular films by its rewatchability and overall greatness.
If you think it’s just another movie about mobs confronting other mobs, don’t be misguided. Indeed, the main character Charlie is not as powerful and confident as brutal protagonists of typical crime flicks, the truth is that he has his own Achilles' heel.
Charlie’s seemingly comfortable position as a nephew of a powerful mafioso is troubled by his relationship with an epileptic girl,...

About three years ago, we heard that Lethal Weapon franchise star (and potential Lethal Weapon 5 director) Mel Gibson had signed on to star in a fantasy adventure / family horror film that was going by the title Boys of Summer. That project has since been given a new title, Monster Summer, and Coming Soon reports that it will be reaching theatres just in time for Halloween! The specific release date is October 4th.
Directed by David Henrie (This Is the Year) from a script written by Cornelius Uliano and Bryan Schulz (The Peanuts Movie), Monster Summer follows a local boy, who after his best friend is mysteriously taken, begins to suspect that a supernatural entity may be hunting the children of Martha’s Vineyard. After seeking the help of an aging detective (Gibson), they soon discover they’re on the path of a witch who has recently retired to their island.

I love long movies. Some of my favorite movies of all time have monster runtimes. Oliver Stone's "JFK," which has a director's cut that runs 205 minutes, is a movie I can rewatch over and over and over again. Ditto David Fincher's "Zodiac," which has a director's cut that's a whopping 2 hours and 40 minutes. Hell, my all-time-favorite movie is Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas," which clocks in at 146 minutes.
And yet, at the same time, movies these days can seem, well ... too long. I genuinely subscribe to the mantra of the late, great Roger Ebert, who once wrote, "No good movie is too long and no bad movie is short enough." But gosh, sometimes, I wish movies would just hurry the f**k up. Maybe that's a "me" problem. Maybe my attention span has been shot to hell. I don't know. But when a modern blockbuster movie comes out these days, it's...

Exclusive: Rapman utilized a superpower of his own — one that didn’t require him to don figure-hugging spandex tights and a cape — to survive the setbacks he encountered making the earthshaking new Netflix drama Supacell that began streaming Thursday.
“My superpower is discipline,” he declares.
Having an indomitable will comes in handy, too.
Rapman required his superpower to be at full throttle to help him wind his way through a thicket of obstacles.
For starters, he began the process in 2020, the year the pandemic hit everything. There were often heated and frank discussions over writers, special effects (the usual), and two composers came and went before he persuaded Netflix to let him chime with a third, Sillkey, the songwriter, producer and musician.
Having persuaded commissioners at Netflix to develop his idea of a drama about a group of regular people in south London who become mysteriously afflicted — because it’s like an illness — with superpowers,...

Tosin Cole has already been part of two of the best-known sci-fi franchises around.
Sure, the American-born British actor admits his turn as starfighter pilot Lieutenant Bastian in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was perhaps a little “blink-and-you’ll miss it” (although it could have been a lot more — he got down to the final few auditioning for John Boyega’s role of Finn but “it just didn’t work out” and J.J. Abrams offered him this part instead). But in BBC cult series “Doctor Who,” however, across seasons 11 and 12, he played the main character of Ryan Sinclair, companion to Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord. It all gives him some solid bragging rights.
“You know, I can tell my grandkids, ‘Your granddaddy was in this show!,’” he exclaims.
But now there’s another sci-fi that he hopes could also become something to tell the grandchildren about in years to come.

Martin Scorsese’s one of those rare directors who’ve made so many masterpieces that all too many of his films wind up being underrated just because maybe they don’t quite set the world on fire when they first come out. One such film is Bringing Out the Dead, starring Nicolas Cage as a New York City paramedic on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Hyped as a kind of companion piece to Taxi Driver, with it being written by that film’s Paul Schrader, it was rather coolly received in ’99. Why? Well, let’s not forget that year is one of the strongest in recent memory, and it got a bit overshadowed by movies like Fight Club, Three Kings, Magnolia, The Matrix, Being John Malkovich and a whole bunch of others as far as the cultural zeitgeist went.
However, looking back at the movie twenty-five years later, it...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published September 1, 2023 after the film’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. The movie was originally to be released in December 2023 by 20th Century Studios before being derailed by the Hollywood strikes. Focus Features is now distributing and released it in theaters Friday.
Biker movies are almost a subgenre of films unto themselves, beginning with Marlon Brando’s The Wild One in the early ’50s and then through all those Aip exploitation titles of the ’60s including The Wild Angels, Hells Angels on Wheels and many more, notably Tom Laughlin’s predecessor to Billy Jack called Born Losers. Gangs, intrigues and elaborate frauds — this is what we love about 90s crime flicks. We bet you have seen at least one of them, maybe Martin Scorcese’s Goodfellas (1990), Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) or, maybe, the Coens’ Fargo (1996).
However, there is a unique crime thriller that was unfairly forgotten by the audience. Yes, it’s quite clichéd and relies too much on the already outdated visuals, but it’s still a must-watch for its representation of the 1990s and even The Matrix’s techno vibe.
The film’s plot revolves around Dade aka Zero Cool, a teenage hacker who was accused of crashing over lots of Wall Street computers at the age of only 11. Seven years later, he ends up involved in a risky theft of millions of dollars from a powerful corporation.
This time Zero Cool teams up with other high school hackers, including Kate aka Acid Burn...

Plot: A Chicago biker gang rises in prominence throughout the sixties, only to eventually shift from a family-centred club into something more sinister and dangerous.
Review: To say that I’ve been looking forward to The Bikeriders would be a major understatement. The director, Jeff Nichols, is a favorite of mine, and this is his first movie since his 2016 double-header of Midnight Special and Loving. The wait for this one has seemed extra long, with it initially slated for a 2023 release through Searchlight, only for them to eventually sell the film to Focus Features, who’ve decided to position it as a unique piece of summer counter-programming. This might be a wise choice, given the starry cast (who we interviewed recently), led by a strong trio of performances by Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy.

It wasn't the sort of premise that had "modern masterpiece" written all over it.
In fact, it amounted to a huge gamble for a network that was tentatively seeking to expand its meager slate of original progamming.
Sure, we Americans love our cosa nostra sagas, as evidenced by the perennial popularity of The Godfather, Goodfellas, and their ilk.
But a mob boss who suffers from panic attacks?
A don who's forced to contend with the usual headaches of fatherhood and suburbia?
A protagonist who operates out of a strip club and has no qualms about snuffing out inconvenient colleagues with the old extension cord around the throat?
Sure, the ironic juxtaposition of the two worlds -- the mundane and the murderous, the humdrum and the homicidal -- sounds like a great idea for a 90-minute comedy.
And sure enough, the similar-themed Analyze That, starring Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal hit...

It’s been 24 years since the world saw the success of Martin Scorcese’s hit movie that is now considered timeless. Following the story of the mafia’s associate Henry Hill and his close people, 1990’s Goodfellas literally paved the way for all modern crime dramas.
However, few fans of this masterpiece know that there is a 90s must-see movie of the same kind that is not inferior to it at all and can even beat Scorcese’s film. Moreover, it also stars Robert De Niro at his peak and pays homage to the genre’s classics.
The plot of 1993’s film revolves around Calogero, an Italian-American teenager who is taken under the wing of the local mobster Sonny. The latter initiates the boy into the gang’s ways of proving themselves, and this world seems tempting for Calogero.
On the other hand, the boy faces control of his hardworking...

Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis,” which proved to be wildly divisive after its Cannes Film Festival premiere, has finally found a distributor. Lionsgate has signed a deal to distribute the film in theaters in the U.S. and Canada.
It will be released on Sept. 27. “Megalopolis” is playing in Imax, but it will likely share screens with Christopher Nolan’s 10th anniversary “Interstellar” rerelease. It’ll also have to relinquish those coveted premium large format screens a week later, as “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which was filmed with Imax cameras, lands on Oct. 4.
“Francis is a legend. For many of us, his gifts to cinema were one of the inspirations to devote our own careers to film,” Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement. “It is a true privilege to work with him, and to bring this incredible, audacious, and utterly unique movie to theatrical audiences.

The actor and director came together for a Mean Streets reunion at Tribeca film festival, with superfan Nas asking the questions
On paper, it had a certain Mad Libs quality to it: the Tribeca film festival programmed a fiftieth anniversary screening of downtown classic Mean Streets, with star and festival co-founder Robert De Niro on hand for a Q&a along with director Martin Scorsese – the curveball being that those questions were asked by none other than rapper, lifelong New Yorker, and evident film buff Nas.
The seeming incongruence faded away pretty quickly, and not just when Nas recalled shooting his Street Dreams music video as scrupulous homage to the Scorsese/De Niro joint Casino. He set the stage for the event by expressing everything Mean Streets means and has meant to him, part of the longstanding mutual admiration between gangster cinema and hip-hop. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro presented their first collaboration, the 1973 crime drama “Mean Streets,” and then discussed the film during a De Niro Con presentation at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary took place Saturday at the Beacon Theatre, where the screening was followed by a conversation between Scorsese and De Niro, moderated by legendary rapper Nas.
While “Mean Streets” was the beginning of their 10-film, 50-plus year creative journey together, Scorsese said their introduction first came at a Christmas dinner, where they were urged into conversation by another to-be-legendary filmmaker: Brian De Palma. Although the pair grew up just two blocks away and heard talk of each other in the neighborhood, they had never been properly introduced until that fateful night.
“Bob was sitting there after dinner and then he looked at me and they had gone inside or something,” Scorsese said.

Kevin Brophy, who starred as a young man raised by wolves on the short-lived ABC series Lucan and as the doomed leader of a college fraternity in the cult horror film Hell Night, has died. He was 70.
Brophy died May 11 at his home in Rancho Santa Fe, California, his family announced. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer 10 years ago, they said.
On 1977-78’s Lucan, his first professional acting job, Brophy portrayed a 20-year-old man who spent the first 10 years of his life with wolves in the forests of Minnesota before he’s brought into society.
His character possessed wolf-like superpowers like strength, agility and heightened senses of smell and hearing, and when angry, his eyes glowed amber.
When he got the part, Brophy asked himself, “What does a boy raised by wolves do?” he recalled in December in an interview for the Happy Horror Time podcast. “I came to...

Robert De Niro feels he’s been extremely “fortunate to wind up with Marty” for all these years, and Martin Scorsese returned the compliment as the actor and director sat down after a screening of Mean Streets, the 1973 film that marked their first collaboration, and Scorsese’s breakout. They went on to make nine more features together.
The two grew up together in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, an Italian enclave populated with low level mafiosi. De Niro’s “Johnny Boy” Civello in Mean Streets, a reckless but charming small-time gambler deeply in debt to loan sharks, was based on people they both knew, the duo told a Q&a with rapper Nas after the packed screening at the Beacon Theater. The climatic final scene, a car chase, shooting and crash, was inspired by a trauma Scorsese said he barely escaped – getting out of a car only a few minutes before it smashed.

Robert De Niro blames himself for not knowing enough about comedy to pull off a future Oscar-winning role. The ‘Raging Bull’ actor, 80, starred in and started filming the never-produced 1970s film ‘Bogart Slept Here’ – before the script was reconfigured into the 1977 film ‘The Goodbye Girl’, which won its star Richard Dreyfuss, 76, an Academy Award.De Niro said his then-director Mike Nichols, 83, didn’t find him a comedic fit and eventually fired him.He told Quentin Tarantino, 61, about the project during a question and answer session at the Tribeca Film Festival as it launched its De Niro Con celebration of its iconic co-founder: “I blame myself. I didn’t know certain things. It was a certain type of comedy – (scriptwriter) Neil Simon – that had the timing that would be a certain way… it just wasn’t working. “I shot for about two weeks. This year’s Tribeca Film Festival has launched its De Niro Con celebration of its iconic co-founder, and one of the first big events included a rousing discussion with verbal odd couple Quentin Tarantino and Robert De Niro.
The event started on Friday afternoon with a screening of “Jackie Brown,” Tarantino’s 1997 third feature — via a handsome 35mm print on loan from Martin Scorsese. De Niro has a key supporting role as the recently-imprisoned Louis Gara, a man of few words with an ability to conjure violence quickly.
Tarantino, a notably quick-talking cinephile, peppered De Niro, a man of few words, with questions during their 40-minute post-film discussion, starting first with the actor’s ability to bring comedy to “Jackie Brown.” Tarantino praised De Niro’s portrayal of the “slow” ex-con — senses dulled from a post-prison daze and frequent bong hits during the movie.

Overflowing with insight; stuffed with revelatory interviews and anecdotes and archival footage; as bursting with flavor as a baked ziti; and as immersive, in its way, as the show itself, “Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos” is Alex Gibney’s sensationally artful and engrossing two-hour-and-40-minute documentary about the greatest show in the history of television.
If you’re a fanatic for “The Sopranos” (and who isn’t?), you probably already know a fair amount about how the show came to be, and “Wise Guy,” for a while, treads familiar ground. The film is framed as a profile of the show’s visionary creator and showrunner, David Chase (the opening credits redo the driving-into-Jersey “Sopranos” credits with Chase in the passenger seat), who is interviewed by Gibney on an exact mock-up of the set of Dr. Melfi’s psychiatrist office, a joke/stunt that recedes into the background yet never loses its playful resonance,...

If there is anything that history has taught us, it is that talent is often stalked by doubt. It is as though the world desperately seeks a layer of falsity when someone is really good at something. They want the satisfaction of being able to say, ‘I knew it was a ruse!’ Unfortunately, Martin Scorsese is no stranger to such questions.

Even though he has been regarded as one of the greatest talents of all time, many overly analyze his poor decisions of the past as proof that what is raw talent, is just a clever con. However, one of the most infamous instances of such questioning crossed several lines.
So much so, that beloved director, Guillermo del Toro, felt the need to speak out in support of Scorsese.

Sabrina Carpenter is a master of the art of the music video and her clip for “Please Please Please” is no exception. You’re watching your favorite show, and one of the main characters is in a jam.
He’s held captive by mercenaries and, for the past two episodes, has struggled to escape a labyrinthine prison. It’s unclear whether our hero will live or die, but the next episode opens with a warning: “The following contains a depiction of suicide. Viewer discretion is advised.” Welp, you think, I know how this story ends.
So what happens when trigger warnings need spoiler warnings? As content disclaimers trend in television, some viewers are taking issue when they give away crucial plot details or ruin surprises.
Take Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” which dulled a shocking assault scene with a preemptive warning reading, “The following episode contains depictions of sexual violence which some viewers may find troubling.” Or Apple TV+’s “Severance,” which tipped viewers off to an episode cliffhanger by revealing, “The following contains a depiction of self-harm.

Tom Hanks was fated to lead Penny Marshall’s comedy feature that made history more than three decades ago. But, as it turns out, two rather exceptional actors reportedly passed down the film that was well on its way to becoming a box-office sensation.

Both Batman star Michael Keaton and Yellowstone actor Kevin Costner were apparently offered to play the ebullient protagonist in the fantasy drama, Big. But thanks to their refusals, Hanks ended up swiping the opportunity from them, starring in the first-ever movie by a female director to reach $100 million at the box office.

The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV+ customers can watch some true classics.
Apple TV+ is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV+ had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV+ is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

Ever consider whether the most accomplished directors in Hollywood share a mutual admiration for one another? Amidst this mutual reverence, we recently learned about a fascinating anecdote: The acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker & master of intense action, John Woo, once declared his adoration for the legendary Martin Scorsese.

With a career that has lit up theaters with films like Mission: Impossible 2 and A Better Tomorrow, Woo’s admiration for Scorsese’s work goes beyond rivalry, allowing viewers to delve into a moving homage given in the former’s classic film The Killer. Despite receiving positive reviews for its lavish style and action scenes, this 1989 masterwork did not openly succeed in Hong Kong but went on to win over critics all over the world.

Lumberjack the Monster, the Japanese director’s long-awaited return to out-and-out horror, is a huge event. So why has it been noiselessly launched into oblivion?
Last weekend, something fairly momentous happened. Lumberjack the Monster, the new film by Takashi Miike, arrived on Netflix. Lumberjack the Monster is a significant release, because it represents the first out-and-out horror movie that Miike has made in a decade, having spent the intervening years dabbling in other genres. For a certain type of fan, it’s like Scorsese coming back from the wilderness of the 1980s with Goodfellas. Even if his films are too violent and perverse for you, you still have to admit that a new Takashi Miike horror movie is a big deal.
Unless you’re Netflix, of course. Because Netflix released Lumberjack the Monster with minimal – perhaps even non-existent – promotion. I only knew about it because I saw a tweet from...

Richard Linklater and Glen Powell love movies. Making them and talking about them. In a recent promotional video posted by Netflix on X, formerly known as Twitter, the “Hit Man” screenwriting duo went through some of their favorite films for any given situation. When asked of his favorite Scorsese film, Linklater said, “‘Raging Bull’ was in that top slot for a couple decades before ‘Goodfellas’ kind of knocked it off.”

"City of God" is so much more than just Brazil's answer to "GoodFellas,". One of the most acclaimed Brazilian films of all time, Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund's 2001 masterpiece is a portrait of Rio de Janeiro and its reality, the ugly and the beautiful sides of it. Set in the favelas of Rio in the '70s, the film centers on two men, each following a different path they say is forced on them by their Dickensian circumstances. One becomes a photographer documenting the drug-related violence that is rapidly increasing in the neighborhood, while the other becomes an ambitious drug dealer climbing the ladder.
In addition to gathering universal acclaim for its acting, cinematography, writing and portrayal of the favelas, "City of God" also got four nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director. Now, over 20 years after the release of the original, Max has announced a sequel series.

When deciding what to watch, we often rely on other people's opinions, and that's perfectly fine. If we have doubts about the genre of the general nature of what we want to see, if it's not a new movie that just hit streaming platforms, the choice can be difficult because of the huge variety of thighs that are available.
Who to trust better if not your favorite director, then? For example, Quentin Tarantino is always vocal about what he likes and dislikes in movies, but so is Guillermo del Toro.
Therefore, if you trust the choices of the iconic director and you're in the mood for something old-school and classic – here are del Toro's 5 favorite movies to watch.

The Departed filmmaker came under fire back in 2019 when he compared Marvel with theme park rides and said that they were not cinema, sparking controversy and a bunch of memes.
While the filmmaker was commenting on the lack of originality in Hollywood and how the only films getting made were superhero films, many fans took issue with him insulting their beloved franchise. However, the director seemed to have calmed down about the issue, according to George Lucas.

There are many things that every person goes through in life, both pleasant and very unpleasant. One of the things you'd rather leave to the enemy is going through a painful breakup.
It may sound silly to some people, but it is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a person. Your whole life comes crashing down and you find yourself completely lost.
In moments like this, the only thing you can do is focus on yourself, but that's just too hard to do when you're freshly heartbroken. So maybe instead you should watch a bunch of movies to help you forget that your ex ever existed?
Here's a list of movies that solve the problem perfectly, despite being so different.
1. The Thing (1982)
A lot of redditors advised this particular John Carpenter movie as the best option in cases like we described. Why not? An old sci-fi...

Back in April, the news broke that Steven Spielberg intends to return to the sci-fi genre for a mysterious "UFO movie" based on his own original idea, and the project has now set an official release date.
According to Variety, the untitled film is set to hit theaters on May 15, 2026.
There's been speculation about the legendary director's next film ever since rumors did the rounds that he might be taking a long break (or possibly even retiring) after the release of The Fablemans, so it came as something of a surprise that this movie already in the early planning stages.
Details are practically non-existent right now, but the screenplay will be written by David Koepp, who has previously collaborated with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Seemingly from out of nowhere, actor turned director Gilles Lellouche throws a Molotov Flanby into the Competition with only his second feature, a terrific and unexpectedly potent piece of genre filmmaking that could, to avoid spoilers, be described as a kind of mash-up of Badlands and La Haine, as if directed by Walter Hill. Throw in a little Eurocrime, from the likes of Fernando Di Leo and late-period Jean-Pierre Melville, and you’re getting close to what Lellouche has achieved here, a romantic banlieue opera that delivers all the gritty, vicarious thrills of the now-standard post-Goodfellas gangster movie but also burrows into issues of class and gender in refreshingly unpredictable ways.
It arrives as a movie seemingly made by committee, since the film is based on an Irish novel — Jackie Love Johnser Ok? by Neville Thompson — and features contributions by fellow filmmakers Ahmed Hamidi and Audrey Diwan. It quickly...

If you took Magnolia, Goodfellas, Boyz n the Hood and perhaps Claude Lelouch’s A Man and a Woman, plugged them all into the latest version of ChatGPT and asked it to spit out a brand new film, you could wind up with something like Gilles Lellouche’s (no relation to Claude) swooning French crime romance, Beating Hearts (L’Amour ouf).
A hodgepodge of movie clichés and overwrought scenes, directed with zero tact and plenty of pounding needle drops, actor-turned-director Lellouche’s third stab at the helm after his rather likeable ensemble comedy, Sink or Swim, is less a disappointment than a serious assault on the viewer’s intelligence. The fact that it premiered in Cannes’ competition, rather than in a sidebar “Première” slot, speaks to the general level of one of the festival’s weakest main slates in recent memory.
