Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.
Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.
The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.
He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

Last month, we got a look at the trailer for the action thriller Duchess, the latest film from director Neil Marshall. Saban Films will be giving Duchess a digital and VOD release on August 9th… and with that date just one week away, a pair of promotional clips have made their way online. They’re called the “Home Invasion” and “Garage Ambush” clips, and you can watch them right here in this article.
In the UK, Duchess will be getting a limited theatrical release on August 9th, and will then be available for digital download on the 12th.
Marshall wrote the Duchess screenplay with Charlotte Kirk, who also stars as the title character, a tough, working-class, petty criminal who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. Determined to seek retribution she launches into a vicious and violent pursuit for vengeance.

This year’s Sdcc brought several exciting new revelations for the MCU. Fans enjoyed exclusive previews of Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, this time as Doctor Doom.
Additionally, the recent release of Deadpool & Wolverine represents a significant turnaround for Disney, which has faced financial losses in recent years. As you may know, Phase 4 and Phase 5 have been particularly challenging, with notable losses from last year’s releases, The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The losses went beyond just financial; fans also began to lose interest due to a perceived decline in quality. Phase 4 of the MCU, in particular, did not resonate well with audiences and remains the lowest-rated phase, with most of its projects receiving only “mixed” reviews.
However, Deadpool & Wolverine introduced a significant new concept for the MCU: the “anchor.” An anchor...

Rotten Tomatoes might just be a review aggregator, but its influence is significant — inordinate, you might say. The website that should give you a rough guide as to what critics think about a film has become the arbiter of whether a film is deemed good or not, or in Rt parlance, "fresh" or "rotten." This binary would be fine if Rt wasn't as influential as it is, but these days the Tomatometer's reach is wide, and our adherence to its decrees often borders on unflinching. A green splat is enough to put most casual viewers off a film, which is a shame because that means hordes of people are overlooking unfairly-maligned classics like "The Comedy," or worse, the delights of the seven John Travolta movies to achieve a 0% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

From his debut in Top Secret! to Academy Award-winning action flicks like Top Gun, Val Kilmer has garnered an eclectic repertoire of works under his belt. In a career easily spanning four decades, Kilmer – who started his Hollywood journey as a stage actor – has led some evergreen classics, the likes of which include Tim Burton’s campy Batman Forever and the ’80s hit Willow.

But there’s one film – that makes Kilmer’s robust devotion stand out against his role – for which he deserves much more recognition than he’s received, and rightly so.

Val Kilmer starred in some great films in the 80s and 90s, both as a leading man and as a supporting actor. The actor has starred in a wide range of dramas ranging from thrillers, biopics, to intense action films. Films like The Doors, True Romance, Heat, Tombstone and, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang showed his versatility as an actor.

However, it was 1986’s Top Gun that catapulted him to new heights in his early career. He starred alongside another rising Tom Cruise at the time. While the film had Cruise in the lead, Kilmer’s Iceman was essentially the second lead of the film, who often butted heads with him. Cruise might have become the defining movie star of the film, but it was Kilmer who real-life fighters were more impressed with.

Minh Le, the co-creator of Counter Strike, discussed the game’s origins and design choices in a rare interview with the Norwegian site Spillhistorie.no. Le revealed the inspirations behind the king of the competitive Fps games, stating classic arcade games such as Virtua Cop and Time Crisis, while giving a handout to iconic action films, including Heat and Air Force One.
While this was one of the topics, Le also shared his insights into the long-term success of the game, admitting two reasons he thinks made the game into what it is today, an Fps titan.

The co-creator of the game has attributed much of the game’s success to its team-focused design. Before the legendary first-person shooter, Lee worked on the game Action Quake2, from which he borrowed the round-based concept, he said in the interview.

In 2023, we haven’t predicted that the Christmas and New Year’s box office would serve up a financial feast without the cherry on top of a box-office Goliath like the years before. Bucking the trend, the big screen’s end-of-year bash didn’t lean on a single titan to rake in the crowds.

Michael Mann, the iconoclastic director of "Heat," "The Last of the Mohicans," and "Miami Vice," may have just changed the game when it comes to home video special features.
Today, Mann launched the Michael Mann Archives, which is described as "a state-of-the-art, interactive website offering unique access into the all-encompassing directing process of one of cinema's most influential filmmakers." The first film to be featured is Mann's passion project, "Ferrari," which he spent decades developing before it was finally released in 2023.

Starting today, access to the “Ferrari” archives can be purchased for $65 on Mann’s website. Each user will own a unique access pass allowing them to enter and explore the archive’s extensive collection at their own pace and in perpetuity.
“The Silence of the Lambs” producer Edward Saxon calls the project “a unique, essential addition to film and filmmaking scholarship.

Michael Mann is offering behind-the-scenes access to his filmmaking process with the launch of his Archives site.
The online project, which can be seen here, debuted Tuesday with a focus on his 2023 feature Ferrari that stars Adam Driver as race car driver and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari and Penélope Cruz as wife Laura Ferrari. Users can purchase access to the interactive website, and there is a plan to create future pages focused on other Mann movies.
Mann’s Archives site includes 20 previously unseen mini-documentary videos highlighting the making of the film and the technology involved. Also included are the Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s annotated script pages, notes to himself, photo storyboards and an array of audio recordings.
“Directors have no idea how any other director makes a movie,” Mann told the Los Angeles Times about the Archives project. “And so we each evolve our own particular process. This is an opportunity to pass that on,...

Director Michael Mann's magnum opus is 1995's "Heat." The movie's sprawling shoot-out scene (the best of its kind) is what many most remember about "Heat," but the picture doesn't only rely on action. "Heat" is just as compelling when Detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and robber Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) are sitting down for a cup of coffee. Mann's next film, 1999's "The Insider," relies only on dialogue scenes to keep up the tension and easily succeeds.
"The Insider" is nearly as long as "Heat" and is just as compelling despite there being no action scenes to break up the talky bits. Mann is one of our best action filmmakers, but his talents extend past action movies. (Read our full ranking of Mann's films here.)
A journalism thriller, "The Insider" recounts the story of a 1996 "60 Minutes" expose on the tobacco industry. (The story had previously been detailed...

Just days after hinting about their all-star collaboration, Kylie Minogue has dropped her new single “My Oh My” featuring Tove Lo and Bebe Rexha.
Minogue dropped the dance floor-ready dance-pop track Thursday, along with a visualizer that plays into the horoscope references in the lyrics:
On the track, the singers trade turns on the verse and chorus, with Minogue kicking off the proceedings before Rexha and Tove Lo follow suit.

Three pop queens are about to join forces for what appears to be a wild dance-pop collab. On Tuesday, Kylie Minogue, Bebe Rexha, and Tove Lo seemed to tease a new song together, as they shared videos of themselves picking up a phone call from “Mom” with the same ringtone.
Minogue first started the trend, as she dialed the number “606” before answering, “Hi.” Then, Rexha, from inside a hotel room, and Tove Lo, lounging by a pool, answered separate calls with the same ringtone featuring Minogue’s voice. The caller ID read “Mom” in all-caps.

It remains to be seen if Neil Marshall will ever get the chance to direct the Dog Soldiers sequel or the Predator movie he wants to make – but he’s not just waiting around to be given those opportunities. You can check it out in the embed above.

You have to assume there are quite a few film fans that include a film by Michael Mann in their lists of favorite movies. Personally, I’d probably include “Heat” in my list. So, if Mann himself is a master filmmaker, it would be interesting to know what his favorite movies are, right? Thankfully, Mann created a Letterboxd account and listed his favorite films. So, let’s take a look.

When you think of the long-running Fox procedural "Bones," what do you think of? Skeletons of every kind — goopy, burned, rotting, frozen, and so on — on display while Emily Deschanel's forensic anthropologist examined them for clues? A will-they-won't-they romance between her character, Temperance Brennan, and David Boreanaz's FBI agent Seeley Booth? That one post-"American Idol" episode where The Gravedigger's head explodes?
By virtue of the show's title alone, it's unlikely that Booth's sharpshooting is the first thing that comes to mind for fans of the series. The character was great at his job, but any number of FBI cool guy antics paled in comparison to Bones' own nitty-gritty investigative work. Still, Boreanaz apparently worked hard behind the scenes to make sure Booth's status as a former Army sniper was believable, even going so far as to train with the show's police technical adviser, according to Paul Ruditis' book "Bones: The Official Companion.

HBO’s House of the Dragon is a spin-off series related to Game of Thrones. It premiered back in 2022 and the series, whose first season consisted of 10 episodes, was welcomed by both critics and fans. Because of that, it was soon renewed for a second season, which finally premiered Sunday, June 16, 2024, to great reviews as well.
The second season of the House of the Dragon series has been expanding the story, of course, but it has also been providing us with some interesting moments, among them some very shocking ones. The most recent episode provided us with the latter, which we are going to discuss here.
The scene from the latest episode we are going to talk about showed actor Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond Targaryen, in the nude with his penis on display. And while we’ve seen everything and anything from the Game of Thrones series, this scene still managed to shock fans,...

It’s no secret that Crime Boss: Rockay City got off to a ‘rockay’ start last year when it launched for consoles and Gog. However, in the time since, InGame Studios has put a lot of time and effort into making the game closer to its original vision, with constant updates, content, and more seemingly every week.
We were lucky enough to talk with Jarek Kolář, the Managing Director of InGame Studios, about the original launch, the changes they’ve made, the recent Steam launch, and how they’re planning to win everyone back in the future, and much more besides.

For a certain type of film nerd (and lord knows I’m one), Michael Mann is a god. The man (Mann!) has directed some of the most potent, ultra-macho dramas and crime thrillers of the last forty-plus years, including a whole laundry list of classics, including Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and many more. Plus, he’s the guy behind one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Miami Vice, and its underrated 2006 big-screen remake (to which we recently paid tribute). His influence can be felt in everything from Sam Levinson’s Euphoria to, shockingly enough, the films of Wes Anderson.
And now, Mann has joined the Mecca of film worship, Letterboxd, opening an account that includes a list of fourteen of his favourite movies. The selection is quite eclectic, including works from Sergei Eisenstein to Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Denis Villeneuve,...

Having dabbled in YA fantasy (The School For Good And Evil) and Wham!-based Christmas movies (Last Christmas) in recent years, director Paul Feig is getting back into his Spy and The Heat action-comedy groove with high concept Prime Video movie Jackpot! A sort of The Purge-meets-Euromillions-rollover caper set in very-near-future Los Angeles, this one sees Awkwafina's struggling actor Katie reluctantly teaming up with John Cena's amateur lotto heavy Noel when she unwittingly hits the jackpot, only to learn that California state rules allow anybody to kill the lottery winner before sundown without consequence. If it sounds a bit zany, then it looks even zanier. Check out the wackadoodle trailer below;

On September 16, 1984, a little TV show named Miami Vice hit cable and was a huge success for NBC. It was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by an up-and-coming filmmaker named Michael Mann. The show would become iconic for its stylish depiction of the Miami drug scene, its use of contemporary music and its distinctive fashion. Years later, in 2006, a movie that has gone down as very divisive would be made. It’s a movie that defines what it means to be revisited. So today, let’s check out Michael Mann’s film adaptation of Miami Vice.

Actor Al Pacino worked alongside Memento director Christopher Nolan for the first time in the 2002 thriller Insomnia. But Pacino initially made it a bit difficult for the director to bring him on board.
What Christopher Nolan felt about casting Al Pacino in ‘Insomnia’ Al Pacino | Dominik Bindl/Getty Images
Nolan once asserted that he didn’t start out developing Insomnia for Pacino. The 2002 feature saw Pacino playing a veteran police detective investigating a novelist played by Robin Williams. Nolan wanted Insomnia to be commentary on the common cop genre of film. Apart from his acting skills, Pacino made a career out of playing police officers in movies like Heat and others. Pacino being such a familiar face in crime thrillers made him the perfect candidate to do Insomnia.

There's an entire generation of actors, and movie lovers in general, who think Al Pacino is the best actor ever based almost solely on the basis of his 1970s work. Obviously, he was overwhelmingly dynamic. The live-wire energy of characters like Frank Serpico, Sonny Wortzik and Arthur Kirkland spit and popped off the screen with a sizzling intensity that could only be matched by his Method contemporaries (namely Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman). But he might've been more impressive when playing strangely ingratiating outsiders, as he did to unforgettable effect under Jerry Schatzberg's direction in "Panic in Needle Park" and "Scarecrow."

Robert Downey Jr. has certainly made a name for himself. Throughout his career, he has gone from a questionable star to one of the most talented and respected actors in the world, and he only has his hard work and raw skill to thank for it.
Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War | Marvel Studios
After playing the role of Tony Stark, he gained an immense amount of respect from the masses and has gone on to prove that he is deserving of the status in the years since he left the MCU. Despite his standing and reputation, there was one particular movie where he was made fun of, and there was nothing he was able to do.
During the filming of the iconic film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the legendary Val Kilmer would often belittle Downey’s character, and the Iron Man actor was perfectly fine with it.

Fans of the hit series “Prison Break” have reason to celebrate as Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller, the actors who portrayed brothers Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield, are set to reunite on screen in a new drama series titled “Snatchback.” The show, currently in development at Universal Television, promises to bring the duo’s dynamic chemistry back to television in an entirely new setting.
“Snatchback,” created by Scott Rosenbaum, known for his work on “The Shield,” “Chuck,” and “Queen of the South,” draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of an active covert intelligence officer. The series will follow a team of highly skilled operatives, led by Purcell and Miller’s characters, as they undertake dangerous missions to recover hostages from perilous locations around the globe.

With Austin Butler making the press rounds with interviews for Jeff Nichols‘ “The Bikeriders” in theaters tomorrow, he’s getting plenty of questions about buzzy upcoming projects. Among them? Darren Aronofsky‘s “Caught Stealing,” Ari Aster‘s “Eddington,” and … possibly Michael Mann‘s “Heat 2“? There’s no official confirmation yet that Butler will play Chris Shiherlis in Mann’s upcoming prequel, but rumors abound that the actor will play a younger version of Val Kilmer‘s character from the 1995 film.

Being a movie star is both a blessing and a curse. The blessings are fairly obvious, but, like all things that are too good to be true, they bring with them the seeds for the curse that follows, which is that movie stardom can set actors up for that much greater a fall should they start to slip off their pedestal. Some instances of actors taking a hard fall are deserved when it's to do with their offscreen behavior, yet in instances where it's mostly to do with the projects they're involved with being subpar, it's hard not to feel sorry for them.
Take Burt Reynolds, for instance. By the end of the 1970s he was among the most well-known and highest-paid actors working, and as the 1980s rolled on he continued to work with other name stars and solid filmmakers like Dolly Parton, Don Siegel, Blake Edwards, his buddy Hal Needham,...

Ryoo Seung-wan, the South Korean film director who was last month in Cannes with “I, The Executioner,” says that his next picture will be an espionage action movie.
It is pitched as “depicting North and South Korean secret agents clashing while [also] uncovering crimes occurring at the border with Vladivostok, Russia.”
Currently titled, “Humint,” a reference to espionage industry’s shorthand for collection of intelligence through humans, rather than signals or data, the new film is to be produced by his Filmmaker R&k company and distributed by New.
Ryoo also says that throughout his career he has sought to change genres and that “Humint” will represent a “more mature espionage action” picture than some of his previous efforts.
Ryoo will release “I, The Executioner” at an unspecified date in the second half of this year. He has already settled the casting of “Humint” and has scheduled full-scale production of the...

Jon Bon Jovi is a snowbird — the nickname given to people of a certain age who flee their northern homes during the winter months to areas with warmer climates.
It’s late April and the famous New Jersey native is in Palm Beach, Fla.
“My license still says the great state of New Jersey,” the Bon Jovi frontman tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I’m there when it’s not cold. But when it’s cold, these old bones are on the beach.”
The rocker, 62, is talking and thinking a lot about his age lately. While his Hulu docuseries, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” chronicles the iconic rock band’s rise to the top, the through line of the four episodes is the singer’s struggle to overcome vocal problems in time for the group’s 40th anniversary tour.

Bradley Cooper is one of the most accomplished actors working in Hollywood right now. While he gained fame for his comedies such as The Hangover series, he graduated to dramatic roles with films like American Sniper and Silver Linings Playbook. He even turned director with the musical romance A Star Is Born and last year’s Maestro.
Cooper opened up about his struggles as an up-and-coming actor in the business. He mentioned that he had once auditioned for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. The actor emotionally recounted how despite not getting the role, he cherished the letter that Mann sent him after his rejection which he has preserved to this day.

Al Pacino has been regarded as one of the greatest actors ever. Several of his films are now regarded as classics, and numbers cannot measure his impact on the world of Hollywood. Having been an inspiration for decades, he has made many others pursue his craft and has become ingrained in the fabric of cinema.

Christopher Nolan is among the most celebrated movie directors of our time, having tapped into various genres throughout his fruitful career, from mind-bending neo-noir detective thrillers to space sci-fi operas to biography dramas and many others.
Funnily enough, despite his broad directing range, some people still recognize Nolan primarily for The Dark Knight trilogy, his sensational take on Batman’s story. But little did we know that the director didn’t even want to make its final installment at all!
Nolan Resents Third Movie Installments
While Christopher Nolan has always been vocal about not being interested in the superhero genre —- which is amusing coming from the man who created one of the best superhero adaptations ever — it wasn’t his general attitude to the genre that almost kept him from making The Dark Knight Rises. It was something rather weird.

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are two of the most prolific veteran actors currently working in Hollywood. The legends have won Oscars and have featured in multiple acclaimed films. They have also worked with legendary directors such as Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, and more.
De Niro and Pacino have worked together on four films to date, with the last being The Irishman. Though they first featured in the film The Godfather – Part II, they never shared the screen as their roles were set in different periods. The first time they ever shared a screen was in Michael Mann’s cult classic film Heat.

Actor Val Kilmer is known for his roles in iconic films such as Batman Forever and The Doors, which made him a household name. Kilmer’s career saw exponential heights during the late 80s and early 90s with his popularity bolstered by his performance as Iceman, a rival to Tom Cruise’s Maverick, in 1986’s Top Gun.

Val Kilmer was almost a lead in one of the cult classics of David Lynch. The Top Gun actor could be a massive name early in his career if he accepted Lynch’s 1986 mystery-thriller Blue Velvet.
Val Kilmer has been cast in several commercially and critically successful films throughout his career. He has also garnered attention from pop culture enthusiasts for his role as the Dark Knight in Batman Forever. However, the Iceman fame has also lost some iconic roles that could have elevated his career.
