In a few words, not much. Well, that’s not entirely true, but this movie from The Raid’s Gareth Evans finished shooting way back in the fall of 2021. Havoc seems to have just disappeared once filming wrapped. It looks like the film will finally hit Netflix screens later this year. What took so long?
What’s It About?
The film looks to continue Evans’ run in the crime/action/thriller genre. This time around, a detective gets pulled into a drug deal gone wrong. When he starts investigating, he finds that a politician’s son is involved. While trying to figure out how the whole thing fits together, the detective finds a city-wide corruption scheme. He has to wade through it to ensure the kid gets out okay but keep himself safe from the politicians pulling the strings.

Walton Goggins, the ghoulish antihero of Prime Video's Fallout series, has become an unexpected sex symbol with the show's success.
Undoubtedly, the reason is the character of Ghoul. Goggins combines a hardened survivalist's anarchic mind with a Hollywood cowboy's rustic stoicism.
He feels like Ronald Reagan channeling John Wayne, like a man at the end of his days who sticks around for one more horseback ride.
The resignation in his attitude drives his character, not to mention the characters around him who react to his infamy and monstrous appearance. He's the new face of anarchy and arguably the first mainstream character to embody the spirit of anarchy with such a genteel facade.
You must be in love with Cooper Howard, aka The Ghoul, because you've seen Walton Goggin's face many times.

Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

When it comes to trilogies, the third one often ends up being the weakest of them all, and unfortunately, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather 3 wasn’t immune to it. Released in 1990, 16 years after the sequel, the film failed to live up to the bar set by its predecessors, which are often regarded as some of the best the medium of cinema has to offer.
Moreover, due to salary disputes, the threequel didn’t see Robert Duvall’s Tom Hagen return, a character that was pivotal to Michael Corleone’s story in the first two entries. Later, when asked about his decision to stay out of the third one, Duvall had a pretty candid response.

It’s no secret that the main motivation behind reviving the franchise after over a decade was money.

Everyone loves a good rags-to-riches story, and showbiz is full of such examples, with the most notable ones involving the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Demi Moore, Jim Carrey, etc. Walton Goggins, known for leaning into playing morally ambiguous characters, whose recent work involves the Fallout show, shares a similar story, as it took him a while to find his footing in Hollywood.
While Goggins eventually rose to prominence in the 2000s, he didn’t have the smoothest of starts, as during his arrival to LA at the age of 19, he only had a mere $300 under his belt.
Despite his rise being gradual, it turned out to be fruitful.

Steven Lightfoot Developing ‘Scot Harvath’ Books For Sony Pictures Television Under New Overall Deal
Exclusive: Steven Lightfoot has been tapped to develop a series adaptation of the Scot Harvath books from New York Times bestseller Brad Thor, under a relatively fresh overall deal with Sony Pictures Television that has previously gone unreported, Deadline has learned.
We’re told that the deal for scripted drama development across cable and streaming came together last year, ahead of the WGA strike. As previously reported, Lightfoot is also currently in business with the studio as co-showrunner alongside Oren Uziel of Sony Pictures Television’s untitled Spider-Man Noir series, based on the Marvel comic, for MGM+ and Prime Video.
In addition to scripting the as-yet-untitled Scot Harvath series, Lightfoot is exec producing alongside Thor; the John Wick franchise’s Chad Stahelski and his colleagues Alex Young and Jason Spitz at 87Eleven Entertainment; Shaun Redick & Yvette Yates Redick of Impossible Dream Entertainment; Scott Cross & Sean Cross of Cross Pictures,...

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.

Oscar-winner Robert Duvall has starred in dozens of films spanning a 60+ year career, racking up six additional nominations in the process, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Duvall made his big screen debut with the small but memorable role of Boo Radley in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962), released when he was 31-years-old. His first Oscar nomination came just 10 years later: Best Supporting Actor for Francis Ford Coppola‘s mob classic “The Godfather” (1972).
It would take 11 years before Duvall finally clinched that elusive Best Actor Oscar for “Tender Mercies” (1983), a small-scale drama about a drunken country-western singer working towards redemption. He would compete five additional times: lead for “The Great Santini” (1980) and “The Apostle” (1997); supporting for “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “A Civil Action” (1998), and “The Judge” (2014).

There was a time when a great many people would proclaim Francis Ford Coppola's mob masterpiece "The Godfather" as the greatest American film of the last 50 years. Those people can't do that anymore. It isn't because the movie has lost any of its artistic power or breathtaking cinematic invention. It's simply because "The Godfather" is now 51 years old, having been released back in 1972. The film is now closer to 1922, five years prior to the popularization of synchronized sound in film, than it is to today, and that gap will only continue to grow thanks to the inevitable march of time.
Because of that time, we have lost so many people involved in the making of the picture, including Mario Puzo, the film's co-writer and author of the original novel, and Gordon Willis, the cinematographer who crafted the signature dark look of the picture. Also gone are many of the film's cast members,...

The 70th Academy Award ceremony on March 23, 1998, is the most-watched Oscar ceremony to date — most likely due to a “Titanic” film nominated for several awards. However, Gil Gates, who produced 14 Oscar ceremonies between 1990 and 2008, also wanted a special segment to recognize Oscar’s platinum anniversary, and arranged for 70 past acting winners to sit together on the stage, with Norman Rose announcing the films for which each performer won. It was a spectacular gathering of actors and actresses from Classic Hollywood, New Hollywood and the contemporary period.

A blockbuster film tied big records, a legendary actor set a new record, a viewership record was achieved and the Academy celebrated its platinum anniversary in a big way. Billy Crystal hosted the 70th Academy Awards on March 23, 1998, where one film made a “titanic” splash, and the ceremony saw its highest viewership of all time, with more than 55 million people tuning in — a record that stands today not only for the Oscars, but all live awards programs.

Billy Joe Shaver, the outlaw-country original who wrote classic songs for the likes of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings and whose “Live Forever” was performed by Robert Duvall in the 2009 Best Picture Oscar nominee Crazy Heart, died today after a stroke in Waco, TX. He was 81. A friend confirmed his death to our sister publication Rolling Stone.
Although Shaver never had much commercial success as a recording artist, he is widely considered among country’s greatest songwriters. All but one of the tracks on Jennings’ 1973 album Honky Tonk Heroes — an early benchmark of the “outlaw country” genre — were written or co-written by Shaver, including its famous title cut. His best-known songs also include “Ain’t No God in Mexico” “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Some Day),” “Georgia on a Fast Train,” “Tramp on Your Street” and “Try and Try Again.

It’s the kind of West Texas town you’ve seen in a thousand movies — not just tranquil but barren, stock-still, a real desolation row, like a postcard that may or may not contain living things. Michael Shannon, as a local police chief, explains that it’s the sort of small town that people once thought of as quaint: one bank, one pizza place, and so on. Except that Why is it that only five people seem to live there, and that they happen to be the only five characters in the movie? “The Quarry” is so diagrammed that it uses its undernourished dark-side-of-the-heartland atmosphere to excuse the fact that nothing of note is really taking place.

Bradley Cooper is currently at the top of Gold Derby’s charts to win the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance as alcoholic singer Jackson Maine “A Star Is Born.” Should he take the award home he would become only the third performer in Oscar history to have also directed the performance for which he prevailed. The only other two actors who accomplished this were Laurence Olivier for “Hamlet” in 1948 and Roberto Benigni for “Life is Beautiful” in 1998.
SEE5 times Oscars and SAG Awards clashed on Best Actor: Denzel Washington, Adrien Brody, Casey Affleck …
Reviews for Cooper’s performance and his direction have been strong and the film has performed well at the box office so he is well placed to be a strong Oscar contender. He is also overdue for a win after losing three consecutive bids from 2012-2014 for “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle” and “American Sniper” respectively.

It’s been two years since #OscarsSoWhite shook up Hollywood with the call for greater diversity in Hollywood, particularly at the Academy Awards.
“We are seeing an improvement,” Steve McQueen said at the Variety and At&T Toronto International Film Festival party for his new action-thriller “Widows.” “We haven’t gone far enough, but hey, I hope we stick to the cause and get things done.”
McQueen was joined at the party, held at Momofuku, by his cast including Viola Davis (who appears on the current cover of Variety), Cynthia Erivo, Liam Neeson, Brian Tyree Henry, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Kaluuya, Robert Duvall and Michelle Rodriguez as well as co-screenwriter Gillian Flynn.
Variety co-editor-in-chief Claudia Eller praised Davis, who appears on the current cover of the magazine. “I think everyone in this room would agree that your talent is unsurpassed,” Eller said. “You’re a triple-threat. You’ve won Oscars, you’ve won Emmys,...

On opening night of Sundance 2018, writer-director Tamara Jenkins premiered her new film “Private Life” to rave reviews. The New York drama was headed for derailment when she submitted it to Netflix Indie Content directors of content Ian Bricke and his lieutenant Matt Levin; they loved her script about an infertile middle-aged couple (Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn) desperately trying to have a child by any means necessary. The drama turned out so well that Netflix is holding it for the fall festival circuit.
Among those in Eccles Theater seeing “Private Life” for the first time was Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. That’s because if a film is budgeted under $10 million, he delegates full greenlight authority to Bricke, who pushed the $9 million “Private Life” into production and approved the last-minute casting of unknown actress Kayli Carter.

Diversity is kind of a hot topic nowadays. As citizens of a melting pot of a culture, it’s nice to be represented in mainstream entertainment. And if we’re being honest, it’s not just about diversity, but authenticity. It always rings a bit false when you have a white person portraying a person of color. It’s especially easy to get away with this in animation, where you don’t even see the voice actors.
Studios have gotten away with this practice for years, but in today’s world, they’re making a conscious effort to create films that respect the culture it’s portraying, and part of that has to do with the voice cast. This newer approach is expanding to Coco, the latest film from Pixar inspired by Día de Muertos, a celebration of the dearly departed.

Well, hello there baby, you look so beautiful," Walton Goggins purrs, leaning forward and suddenly going into full-on loverman mode. "Look at you, all done up in that white dress and those white shoes. This is a proper get-up, my dear. You look hot!" The 44-year-old actor is sitting in a downtown Manhattan restaurant, his face hovering inches away from a plate of Burrata; he was sold on the appetizer after being told it's "like Mozzarella's sexier cousin," so he's now whispering sweet nothings at the cheese with an intensity and seductiveness that's almost frightening.

I sat down with Oscar-winning screenwriter, actor, director and musician Billy Bob Thornton for Venice Magazine in October of 2001. He had a slate of very diverse projects he was promoting: his first solo music album, "Private Radio," as well as the films "Monster's Ball," "Bandits," and "The Man Who Wasn't There." My strongest memory is of Thornton's quiet intensity and an undercurrent of Southern affability, which came out once he decided you were okay. He seemed to feel that way about me after I shared with him my idolatry of legendary filmmaker Fred Zinnemann, something we shared. I also remember his unusual diet, when our lunch was served. Thornton got the biggest plate of sliced papaya I've seen to date, artfully presented. I got a seafood salad. He looked at my plate, smiled, and told me about the horrible shellfish allergy he'd been saddled with all his life, and how...

Robert Duvall has a few inviolable rules when he's making a movie: If there's a horse to be ridden, he will ride it; if there is a dance to be danced, he will dance it, and if there is a song to be sung, he will sing it.

With "Wild Horses," Robert Duvall returns to the director's chair for the first time since 2002's "Assassination Tango." At 84 years old, his sheer perseverance deserves some measure of recognition. Unfortunately, this low budget western melodrama, which Duvall also wrote and stars in, lacks the sophisticated perspective on parochial American life found in "The Apostle," Duvall's best-known directing effort and the one with which "Wild Horses" bears closest resemblance. But whereas "The Apostle" was a passionate effort for Duvall that he spent years pulling together, "Wild Horses" feels more like a vanity project that eschews polished storytelling for half-baked conceits. With the Screen Actors Guild nominees just around the corner, I thought it’d be fun to try and guess what we’d be seeing in the five film categories. Obviously we have a lot that seem like 100%-certain locks, but, as usual, there are spots that are a toss-up between several potential nominees, making this a fascinating guessing game based on the awards we’ve seen thus far and what picks seem to have a lot of buzz behind them. So, without further ado, let’s dive right into the first category.
Best Supporting Actress
Right now, I would only venture to say that two nominees appear to be a certainty, those being Patricia Arquette for Boyhood and Emma Stone for Birdman, a commonality that we’re going to be seeing a few times in these categories. Both of them have already been nominated multiple times, and in many cases won,...

Exclusive: Production has wrapped on Robert Duvall’s Wild Horses, which Voltage Pictures is selling internationally at the Afm.
Duvall stars in the Western alongside James Franco, Josh Hartnett, Luciana Duvall and Adriana Barraza.

“It was very beneficial to have worked in Utah with these actors and wonderful crew. We could not have done the movie without the input from the Texas Rangers. Their expertise plus their natural acting abilities within the film made this a memorable experience.

The Judge did not come close to winning its opening weekend. Nor did the critics swoon over the pairing of Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, playing a hot-shot, big-city attorney and his ornery father, a prominent small-town judge accused of murder. But even if the script is Grisham-light and the prodigal-son bit overly familiar, there's at least one reason to keep it on your must-see list: Duvall. "Now it's about time to recognize Robert Duvall as one of the most resourceful, most technically proficient, most remarkable actors in America today," wrote the New York Times. Part 2 of this list gets a bit more foreign. In fact, this may be the first full list that has more foreign-language films than English-language ones. Maybe English-speaking audiences aren’t as willing to watch religious films. Maybe films associated with religion come off as preachy or accusatory. Or maybe (most of) the films on this list have done it so well already that it doesn’t need to be done again.
