There’s barely any actor in the entertainment industry who would sell their soul to Lord Voldemort to get an endorsement from an acclaimed filmmaker like Martin Scorsese. But when it came to the Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, he apparently received the director’s alleged praise out of nowhere, back in 2010.

Fresh out of the Harry Potter fame, The Sun had once reported how Rupert Grint had earned Martin Scorsese’s apparent praise and comparison with Leonardo DiCaprio. It was also stated that Scorsese had supposedly expressed his desire to cast Grint as a gangster in his films. However, later on, the outlet’s report turned contradictory, when Scorsese denied watching any of the Harry Potter films.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Scary, absurd, inessential." That's how critic David Denby described director Renny Harlin's 1999 shark movie "Deep Blue Sea" in his review for The New Yorker. I think it's fair to say that history agrees with his first two points. That third point, however? That one has been challenged greatly as the film was a success in its day and has gained a much larger following in the years since its theatrical run. It's now a franchise with two direct-to-video sequels. More than that, one could easily make the argument that it's the second-best shark movie ever made, only behind Steven Spielgerg's all-time blockbuster classic "Jaws."
Spielberg didn't invent the shark movie with "Jaws," but there was very much a dividing line between...

Set against the backdrop of tragedy, Titanic left an indelible mark in the hearts of the audience. The movie featured a young Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the lead and a musical masterpiece, ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Celine Dion. The heartbreaking Ballad became synonymous with the movie itself.

It's astonishing to think that James Cameron, the mastermind behind FX-laden mega-blockbusters like "Titanic" and "Avatar," once made movies on the cheap. When Cameron made "The Terminator" back in 1984, he was able to assemble relatively low-rent effects to produce some pretty incredible visuals. In one scene, for instance, after actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was briefly on fire, Cameron needed his jacket to realistically smolder. Cameron didn't want to burn Schwarzenegger with anything pyrotechnic, so he threw some (inexpensive) acid onto Arnold's jacket. The dissolving material looked like smoke.
"Terminator" fans might also know the story of how Cameron needed a shot of the killer robot's glowing mechanical eyeball flickering out at the film's conclusion. The achieve the shot, Cameron bought a small red lightbulb at an electronics store, crushed it in between two pieces of styrofoam that he painted silver, and blew cigarette smoke into the frame. He filmed the scene in his garage.

James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) will forever be remembered as one of the most iconic films to have graced the film industry. You simply cannot have a conversation about cinema without mentioning the film that removes your heart from your chest cavity, stomps on it, and puts it back in, forcing you to feel all the feels. On top of that, Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On helped James Cameron in breaking our hearts into a million pieces.

Apart from being a highly appreciated cult classic movie, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio has delivered a few of the most memorable scenes in the history of cinema. One among them is the intense scene involving DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton and the iconic flamethrower.

While the flamethrower scene became memorable for its dramatic flair, considering how Leonardo DiCaprio incinerated Manson cult member Susan Atkins (Mikey Madison) to death, it wasn’t as effortless as it was portrayed. Apparently, DiCaprio’s experience filming it was far from ordinary and bordered on a nightmare for the actor.

Photograph by Courtesy of Paramount Pictures Academy Award-winning producer, director, and writer James Cameron is a true cinematic titan. He made movie history in the 2000s with the groundbreaking Avatar franchise, and throughout the 1980s and 90s, he delivered hit after hit: The Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens, True Lies, and more. These unforgettable films have solidified their place in cinematic history. While the big and small screens have seen numerous Titanic-themed stories, nothing quite compared to Cameron’s iconic 1997 film, Titanic. This Academy Award-winning masterpiece, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, has stood the test of time as one of the biggest movies ever made. However, convincing studios to greenlight this ambitious project was no easy feat. Cameron had to make a compelling case for his vision of Titanic, which was poised to become one of the most expensive films ever produced. Recalling the pitch, Cameron described his meticulous...

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) grossed $38.5 million in Thursday previews. Though not a record (“Avengers: Endgame” took in $60 million), it suggests an opening above the projected $150 million-$200 million. However, it guarantees the easiest of predictions: This will make it the best opening for an R-rated film ever.
“Deadpool and Wolverine” will be the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film as not only an unadjusted gross, but also adjusted to relative ticket prices. It should also easily score the biggest domestic total for an R-rated release, but it will remain far down the list of R-rated hits based on attendance.
At $371 million, it will become the highest grossing R-rated film. But it will need to gross $464 million — $100 million more than either of the two earlier “Deadpool” films — to even make the top 15 when comparing adjusted ticket prices.

On paper, it looks like the perfect comedy storm: a cult-classic post-Monty Python adventure from Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin, adapted and updated by the dudes behind What We Do In The Shadows and The Inbetweeners. But, for all its pedigree and Apple-funded VFX budget, this 21st-century Time Bandits doesn’t deliver the swag.
The main culprits are the titular gang. Portrayed in the original by dwarf performers including David Rappaport, Kenny Baker and Jack Purvis, the Bandits were an engagingly energetic crew, whose fractious antics powered much of the action-comedy (when the big-star cameos weren’t happening) — as loveable as they were amoral. Here, the noticeably ganglier likes of Lisa Kudrow, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva and Charlyne Yi fail to measure up.
The extended running time doesn’t do the concept any favours
This is mostly down to the new troupe’s oddly low-energy shtick,...

Released in 2008, Kate Winslet’s The Reader is one of a kind. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, the film left its viewers speechless. Based on a German novel of the same name, The Reader was nominated for five Academy Awards in 2009, out of which it won one – Kate Winslet’s first and only Oscar so far.
The Reader (2008) | Mirage Enterprises
There is a scene in the film where Kate Winslet’s Hanna Schmitz is trying to prove her innocence at a trial where several SS guards were accused of letting 300 Jewish women and children die in a fire. The trial ended with Hanna pleading guilty to writing a report which stated that the guards did not know about the fire until the morning. While Hanna was not the one to write the report, the reason why she lied still breaks the heart of many viewers, and rightly so.

Thanks to films like The Wolf of Wall Street, Titanic, The Great Gatsby and so much more, there is no doubt to the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is a phenomenal actor. However, there is one actor out there who managed to intimidate him while working on a film together – Daniel Day-Lewis. Daniel Day-Lewis is a force to reckon with and while his ways to nail a role might not sit right with everyone, it sure helps him bring out the best in his characters.

Kate Winslet, an icon whose name sparkles in the firmament of film history with the gloss of a polished diamond. From her unforgettable appearance in James Cameron’s Titanic to the gritty streets of Mare of Easttown, the Oscar-winning actress has carved a niche where complex, resilient, and authentically depicted women reign supreme.
But, you may wonder, does her influence waft far beyond the big screen? Well, Winslet, 48, has channeled her passion into championing the unfiltered representation of women’s narratives.

Glen Powell seems to be having a stellar year with the release and positive reception of his action-comedy Hit Man. Now, the Top Gun: Maverick star has given yet another blockbuster with the disaster film Twisters. The film acts as a sequel to Bill Paxton’s 1996 film Twister.
Powell’s new action film reportedly had a phenomenal opening at the weekend box office. The film reportedly received positive reviews for its performances and direction. It has also almost beat Oppenheimer’s opening weekend collections on Christopher Nolan film’s first anniversary.

The ‘90s are back – also in Naima Mohamud’s upcoming “Halima,” produced by Finland’s It’s Alive Films, behind Oscar entry “Euthanizer,” and No-Office Films.
“It was a wild time. The hair! The clothes! I really wanted to go back to when boybands, Tamagotchis and popper pants were all the rage. And Aqua, the greatest ‘90s pop band in the world, [behind] ‘Barbie Girl’!” enthused the director, who used to be “obsessed” with its singer Lene Nystrøm.
“I tried cutting my own bangs and dyeing my hair with food coloring to rock her hairstyle. It didn’t work, of course, and the following months were agony. I got told off for wasting food coloring my mother needed to make Somali dessert halwa.”
In Mohamud’s partly autobiographical “down-to-earth dramedy about loneliness, childhood and conquering your fears” – currently in development and eyeing a 2025 shoot – it will be Halima’s turn to experience such “heartwarming and humorous” misadventures.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have long been major fan favorites, especially as lovers onscreen. This is because of the outstanding chemistry the duo has successfully displayed all along, resulting in some of the most critically acclaimed masterpieces of all time. However, the pair didn’t exactly say yes to starring opposite each other the entire time.

Well, Winslet for one most certainly didn’t, and ended up turning down one too many roles that asked her to be the onscreen lover of DiCaprio. The same was the case for Inception as well, which is, unarguably, one of DiCaprio’s highest-grossing movies. As it turns out, the actress was asked to play the actor’s lover once again, but her response was a big no.

The celebrated legend Bill Paxton, known for his diverse and intense roles spanning from drama to action flicks, is perhaps best remembered for his impactful performances in movies like Aliens, True Lies, and Apollo 13. But unfortunately, despite his illustrious career, Paxton faced a unique personal challenge, where his children struggled to experience his work firsthand.

James Cameron is the unquestioned king of the box office. Three of the biggest movies of all time, "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Titanic," were all directed by him. Were it not for 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," he would own the top three all by his lonesome. But it's his 2009 sci-fi epic "Avatar" that stands alone as the biggest box office hit in cinema history, with $2.92 billion to its name. So, if you were in that movie, it did wonders for our career. Stephen Lang was one of those lucky cast members, playing the evil military man Quaritch. It turns out, this wasn't his first brush with one of Cameron's sci-fi masterpieces.
In a 2022 oral history on Cameron's career by The Ringer, Lang explained that he had first auditioned for the director when he was making 1987's "Aliens." At the time, Lang was just getting his start, having starred...

Like horror, science fiction lends itself well to serialization. Fans of the genre love the chance to explore fantastical worlds far from our own, and once storytellers have developed a brand-new universe, those fans love having a reason to come back. From "Star Trek" to "Star Wars" (which are quite similar), from "The Terminator" to "The Thing," sci-fi franchises can spawn from anything given a strong enough premise.
Moviemaking takes time, though, and we also live in a world where projects are announced many years in advance. This can all make it frustrating to be a fan of sci-fi, often having to wait years to be able to return to a series that you love, even though new installments are constantly dangled over your head. While we're waiting for the next great sci-fi original to spark a new franchise, we've rounded up some of the sci-fi sequels that we simply...

N*de scenes in Hollywood are nothing new. While some are okay with baring their bodies for the screen, all a part of the art, some show hesitancy on the matter. And actor Jim Caviezel, who is most famous for the movie The Passion of the Christ and the show, Person of Interest, is in the latter group of people.

Monica Bellucci’s Irréversible has collectively been regarded as one of the most traumatizing and explicit films of all time. Being advertised as trauma translated into cinema, Gaspar Noé had a very clear vision when he was making the film. The raw reality that it hits its audience with can often be too much. However, the film is more than just its profanity, providing a window into the lives of some deeply complex characters.

2024 has been some year for the importance of photojournalists being writ large both on screen and in the news. Earlier this year, Alex Garland's Civil War envisioned its cautionary tale of an imagined new American Civil War literally through the lens of war photographers Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst) and Jessie Cullen (Cailee Spaeny). Just this past weekend, a turning point in the States' Presidential race was captured in an extraordinary image of a bloody-eared Donald Trump. Now, in Cinematographer Ellen Kuras' feature directorial debut Lee, Oscar winner Kate Winslet is set to tell the story of a decade in the life of iconic American war photographer and WWII correspondent Lee Miller. Check out the trailer for the Sky Original movie below:

Dang, people are really into NATO speeches.
Per Nielsen, 24.2 million people watched President Joe Biden’s solo live news conference on Thursday, July 11. As first noted by the New York Times, that is nearly 5 million viewers more than the Oscars got in March (19.5 million) — and these were the strongest Academy Awards since Covid.
And remember: Thursday’s conference took place two days before the attempted assassination of his presidential-election opponent (again) Donald Trump.
The Biden press conference aired from approximately 7:30 p.m. Et until 8:30 p.m. Et. It was simulcast across eight TV networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Univision, CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. The Academy Awards air (only) on ABC.
All told, Fox News drew the single-largest audience for Biden’s presser. Nearly 80 percent of all viewers (on any channel) were age 55 or older.
See Nielsen’s breakdown here:

The 1997 movie awards season was shaping up to be surprisingly competitive in the early fall of that year. "L.A. Confidential," "Boogie Nights," and "The Sweet After" were making serious noise, while summer sleepers "The Full Monty" and "Ulee's Gold" appeared likely to stay in the picture as everyone awaited the arrival of presumed heavy hitters like Steven Spielberg's "Amistad," James L. Brooks' "As Good as It Gets," and Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown." But when James Cameron's "Titanic," a wildly expensive coin flip from a director best known for popcorn flicks, began screening for critics and guilds in early November, everything clicked into place. The boat movie was an Oscar lock for Best Picture and Director, "As Good as It Gets" had Best Actor and Actress sewn up, and everyone else was playing for the honor to be nominated.

The summer of 1994 saw the release of several blockbuster films, including “Speed,” “The Lion King” and “Forrest Gump,” all of which topped the box office upon their opening weekends. On July 15, 1994, yet another film made its nationwide debut at number one. With an all-star cast, action and adventure with a bit of comedy and an offbeat romance, “True Lies” is sheer entertainment. Read on for more about the “True Lies” 30th anniversary.
It had been 10 years since director James Cameron and action star Arnold Schwarzenegger struck box office gold with “The Terminator;” they later proved that the pairing wasn’t a fluke with the even more successful sequel “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in 1991. “True Lies” was also a moneymaker, finishing the year 1994 third, behind “The Lion King” and “Forrest Gump.”

In the world of cinema, directors try out several things to perfect a particular scene. Many would think performing an action sequence would be the most difficult. However, if several actors are to be believed, it would be the love scenes that are the toughest to perform on a set, with so many people around. But certain intimate scenes can be performed with the leads not even touching each other.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the most beloved fantasy franchises and the film adaptations only cemented its legacy as a modern-day classic. The trilogy of films directed by Peter Jackson was known for its groundbreaking visual effects and faithful adaptation of material that was deemed to be unadaptable.
Years later, the franchise received a revival with the Amazon Prime Video series The Rings of Power. The show was the most expensive series at the time and rivaled the production quality of Game of Thrones. While fans had polarizing views on the show, actor Bernard Hill, who played King Theoden had no kind words about the series.

American producer behind the blockbuster films Titanic and Avatar admired as a tough trouble-shooter
Three of the highest grossing films of all time – Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009) and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) – were produced by Jon Landau, who has died aged 63 of cancer. Asked to define his relationship with James Cameron, who wrote and directed all three, Landau said: “Jim dreams the dreams and it’s my job to make them a reality.”
Landau’s own dreams during the shooting of Titanic were more like nightmares. In one, he dreamed that the production’s colossal replica of the ill-fated ship was built entirely from toothpicks, and began to collapse under the weight of all the passengers.

James Cameron, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldaña, Alan Bergman, Peter Jackson and Avatar: The Way of Water cast and crewmembers are among those in Hollywood paying tribute to Jon Landau, who died Friday at 63.
Landau was an Oscar-winning producer, most known for his collaborations with Cameron on blockbuster films including Titanic and the Avatar franchise. His other credits include Alita: Battle Angel, Solaris and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
Cameron remembered his longtime friend in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, writing, “A great producer and a great human being has left us. Jon Landau believed in the dream of cinema. He believed that film is the ultimate human art form, and to make films you have to first be human yourself. He will be remembered as much for his vast generosity of spirit as for the movies themselves.”

Actress Minnie Driver was the ‘it girl’ of ‘90s Hollywood, as she was touted to be the next big star after her Oscan-nominated performance in Good Will Hunting. While she was expected to hit the levels of stardom of other starlets like Kate Winslet and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Driver has chosen to work on more independent and small-scale productions.
Driver’s last blockbuster film, Hard Rain, was reportedly not a good experience. Apart from being a box office bomb, the filming conditions were reportedly extreme and miserable due to it being set around a natural disaster. To top it off, Driver reportedly fought with the producer over miserable working conditions.

Veteran film executive Bill Mechanic shares some memories about producer Jon Landau, who died July 5 at the age of 63, and the experiences they shared during the making of James Cameron’s 1997 epic Titanic, which was backed by Fox Filmed Entertainment when Mechanic was that company’s chairman and CEO.

I always looked at Jon as a born film person. His parents, Ely and Edie, were respected producers, and he knew everything there was to know about movie production.
When I joined Fox, Jon was the head of production, meaning he oversaw every film we made from the studio’s point of view. It was a surprise — and a loss — for us when he left the studio to produce Titanic. But it was also great knowing that we’d have someone so knowledgeable working on a movie that promised to be as ambitious as Jim’s picture.
