Nicole Kidman has shared some rare and intriguing memories of her married days with Tom Cruise. The 57-year-old Australian actress was married to the now 61-year-old action star from 1990 until 2001, during which they starred together in Stanley Kubrick’s critically acclaimed film Eyes Wide Shut. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Nicole reflected on director Stanley Kubrick’s approach to directing their scenes in the erotic thriller. She expressed her belief that Kubrick was “mining” their marriage for inspiration. I suppose he was mining it… There were ideas he was interested in. He’d ask a lot of questions… Triangles are...

The Children, Eleanor!
We’ve spent the month of July discussing the badass babes of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror (listen), the queer undertones of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (listen), and the “very bad weather” of Jan de Bont‘s 1996 tornado film, Twister (listen).
Now we’re wrapping up our de Bont double bill with his less successful 1999 special effects remake, The Haunting!
In the film, sheltered Eleanor (Lili Taylor) is recruited for a dubious insomnia study at the infamous Hill House by questionable doctor David Marrow (Liam Neeson). Along with bisexual Theo (Catherine Zeta-Taylor) and horny Luke (Owen Wilson), Nell is terrorized by annoying ghost children and the monstrous owner of the house, Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning).
As the spectral hauntings become more and more severe, Nell must uncover her tenuous connection to the previous victims before the terrible CGI swallows her and the other participants whole.

While he’s renowned for flying fighter planes and free-falling off cliffs on motorcycles, veteran action icon Tom Cruise has a medley of intriguing roles on his star-studded resume, including a (sort of) motivational speaker who makes a living off of misogyny. No, really.

But what Cruise does, he does it best, be it aviating or holding seminars on getting laid. In fact, he was so good at the latter that he gave Adam Sandler a serious fright after promising to hook him up with the film’s director.

When "Deadpool" opened to $132 million in North America over Valentine's Day weekend in 2016, everything changed for Ryan Reynolds. Up until that point of his career, he'd been an immensely appealing B-level star with A-list potential. His best shot at hitting the blockbuster big time came when he slipped on the power ring as Hal Jordan in 2011's "Green Lantern." When that not-as-bad-as-its-reputation-but-not-all-that-good-either $200 million gamble stalled out with a $220 million worldwide gross, Reynolds was back to being the wisecracking comedic engine of mostly ho-hum action movies and, on occasion, a very interesting actor in pretty good indie dramas.
That he hasn't made anything in that latter category of movies post-"Deadpool" is a bummer for those of us who think Reynolds has more to offer as a performer than a shotgun spray of smug quips in forgettable four-quadrant product like "Detective Pikachu" and "Free Guy." The "Deadpool" movies are clearly personal for Reynolds,...

Actress Nicole Kidman has recently made a rare public comment about her experience working with ex-husband Tom Cruise on Eyes Wide Shut, a film directed by the legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. This revelation comes as the film approaches its 25th anniversary, sparking renewed interest in the behind-the-scenes dynamics of its production. Kubrick’s Vision and Intimate Direction Reflecting on Kubrick’s approach to directing, Kidman noted how I suppose he was mining it. There were ideas he was interested in. When Stanley Kubrick died just days after screening a cut of Eyes Wide Shut — and four months before its premiere — there were a lot of unanswered questions. What even was this film about? What would he do with Hollywood power couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman? Was he even done with the film? Even a quarter century after the release of Eyes Wide Shut, that last one is still debated, with some claiming that while Kubrick did shoot everything he intended to and screened what he had, he was nowhere near complete. But according to Kidman, her perfectionist director was well enough ready to release what would end up being his “haunting final masterpiece.”
When asked by the LA Times if the version of Eyes Wide Shut we all saw was in fact the version he intended for release, Kidman insisted, “Oh, yeah. He had been editing it for 18 months.

As Nicole Kidman marks 25 years since Eyes Wide Shut, she’s reflecting on making the movie with her co-star and then-husband Tom Cruise.
The Academy Award winner recalled working with writer/director Stanley Kubrick and “just a lot of talking” as they spent weeks rehearsing one memorable scene of the pair having an intimate talk over a joint in their bedroom.
“When Tom and I first started with Stanley, it was at his home, and we didn’t even go over to the sets at Pinewood [Studios],” she told the Los Angeles Times. “Six, eight weeks passed, and we’re wondering, ‘Are we ever going to start?’ And we just wouldn’t start. We were getting comfortable with each other, comfortable enough to throw out ideas. For that scene, we improvised the beginning of it through the rehearsals.”

With 25 years having passed since Stanley Kubrick’s last film, “Eyes Wide Shut,” was released following his death, Nicole Kidman is looking back on the psychosexual drama and production surrounding it with positive memories. Sharing the screen with her then-husband Tom Cruise, the pair played a well-to-do New York married couple in the midst of a conflict in their relationship, a plot that feels prescient in relation to their breakup in 2001.
Reflecting on the making of the film for a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, when Kidman was asked what of herself she brought to the character, she said, “My boldness. I’m quite up-front and Alice becomes quite up-front, particularly when she was stoned … although that wasn’t me when I was stoned. I was just naturally like that. Up-front.”
Kidman also acknowledged how her boldness was encouraged by Kubrick, despite the legendary auteur’s reputation as a notorious stickler.

Movies always go through a number of changes between an idea in the shower to streaming from your couch, whether minor (your protagonist now wears leather jackets instead of tweed suits) to major (he’s also a wild stunt man instead of a quiet professor). It’s not uncommon, for example, to lighten up some dark source material for a broader audience, so you know when the opposite occurs — a comedy becomes a heavy drama or high-stakes thriller — some choices were made.

We’re usually relegated to merely imagining what a movie might have been like if it had been taken in a different direction, but in the case of Alien, we can see it. It started as Dark Star (which itself started as John Carpenter’s USC master’s thesis), a comedy featuring an alien very obviously made out of a beach ball. “I went away from Dark Star...

A quarter of a century on, Nicole Kidman, co-star of 1999’s Eyes Wide Shut, recalls the challenges of working with Stanley Kubrick.
It’s been 25 years since the release of Eyes Wide Shut, the last film by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, who died just six days after delivering his cut of the film to Warner Bros. The erotic drama still holds the record for the longest continuous shoot in cinema history and took stars Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise out of the Hollywood picture for a chunk of their careers.
Still, it’s not every day you get to work with a living legend, and with the recent passing of The Shining star Shelley Duvall, there’s cause to remember how Kubrick’s directorial style could be rather challenging. Nicole Kidman Reveals Stanley Kubrick’s Rules for Actors During ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ on 25th Anniversary
It has been 25 years since Nicole Kidman uttered the last word in the final film of legendary director Stanley Kubrick, the posthumously released exploration of the mysteries of marriage and relationships, Eyes Wide Shut.
Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, the actress looks back on working with the filmmaker on the 1999 drama, which she calls “a career in itself,” and its record-breaking production length.
Eyes Wide Shut, based on the 1926 novella Traumnovelle by Arthur Schnitzler, took 400 days to shoot in the late 1990s and began while Kidman was still in her 20s; her co-star and then-husband Tom Cruise was arguably Hollywood’s hottest star. The shoot began, as Kidman recounts in the new interview, with the couple spending a lot of time with Kubrick — a living legend but one who demanded they not “put him on a pedestal.” The three became comfortable enough with one another that the two actors...

Update: Nicole Kidman has given a new interview to the LA Times on the occasion of Eyes Wide Shut‘s 25th anniversary, providing new details on the film’s creation (among them surprising notice of where her own input made the final cut). Read the original story below.
Stanley Kubrick’s final film opened 25 years ago today to largely befuddled disinterest. Even in more recent years its champions (Martin Scorsese most notable among them) seemed quixotic claiming it would someday receive appreciation à la 2001, Barry Lyndon, or The Shining. 25 years hence, Eyes Wide Shut seems nearly incontestable as one of the director’s supreme achievements––something that still feels unresolved and irreconcilable, every viewing the opportunity to glance at incomprehensible horrors among your community and within yourself.

Shelley Duvall Says Her The Shining Role Had Her 'Crying 12 Hours A Day For Weeks' - Main Image

Striking the balance between harsh vibes and exceptional cinema, I’m pleased to announce our next program at the Roxy: The Film Stage has teamed with Chapo Trap House‘s Movie Mindset for Fidelio, a one-week, four-film program on the 1%’s malevolent influence, deep-state connections, and sexual corruption (fun edition).
It begins with Saturday, August 3’s double-bill of Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to New York and a 25th-anniversary presentation of Eyes Wide Shut on 35mm; the following week brings prints of Clint Eastwood’s delightfully absurd (or not?) potboiler Absolute Power and Roman Polanski’s late-career triumph The Ghost Writer. At the end of Eyes Wide Shut, Dr. Bill Harford and his wife Alice come together in that most normative of spaces: an Fao Schwarz toy store. As they watch their daughter look at potential presents, Bill feebly tries to explain his sexual sojourn through the city we just watched, one prompted by Alice’s confession of lust for a random sailor. Upon the completion of Bill’s story, Alice declares, “There is something we need to do as soon as possible.” What’s that, her husband and the audience asks? Fuck.”
The camera holds on her face for a beat or two and then cuts to black. End of movie.
Between Nicole Kidman’s percussive line delivery, Tom Cruise’s bewildered expression, and the sudden cut to credits, Alice’s statement feels definitive. Yet, like every other part of Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick’s final film, the word is both precise and beguiling,...

Mia Goth channeled her Stanley Kubrick fandom to prepare for “MaXXXine.”
Goth told Ireland’s Entertainment.ie journalist Brian Lloyd in the below video that she shadowed a sex worker before starring in Ti West’s conclusion to his trilogy love letter to classic Hollywood.
“I was living in New York at that time and I was introduced to a stripper and I spent quite a lot of time with that stripper and I would get to know her and I would ask questions and that was really helpful,” Goth said. “She would then take me to these events. One in particular, it was a crazy party in New York. It felt very much like ‘Eyes Wide Shut.’ I don’t know how I got in but I was like kind of in the corner witnessing everything. Once I felt like I got enough information, I went away because it was quite intense.

Like the rest of the fans, Léa Seydoux is also wondering why action legend Tom Cruise still hasn’t taken home an Oscar award. The Mission: Impossible star has been nominated four times, and two of them were in the Best Actor category.

It remains a puzzle of what could be the reasons why the prestigious award continues to evade Cruise. The actor has a lot of movies under his belt, and he’s quite the most dedicated actor out there as evident in his willingness to perform his own stunts.

A film becomes timeless through the symbiotic relationship between the actors who bring the characters to life, and the director who executes the narratives. In Hollywood, there have been many such iconic collaborations between filmmakers and stars that have resulted in some of the greatest and most memorable works.

Mixed genres movies sometimes turn into actual gems. But we are not talking about similar bunch of them thrown together, like when it is a crime drama with thriller elements. What makes it interesting when the genres that are not so easy to mix are blended together.
For example, horror comedy is one of our favorites, and it does get a lot of praise. But there’s one subgenre that is totally underrated, and that is erotic thriller. Not everyone understands the power of such movies, probably thinking of it as some sort of 50 Shades franchise equivalent.
Here are 5 stunningly good thrillers in which sex serves not as a means of thirsty entertainment, but as a powerful narrative tool.

Sydney Pollack was the Oscar winning filmmaker who could’ve branded himself as Hollywood’s favorite journeyman, crafting solid entertainments for over 40 years. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 20 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, Pollack got his start as an actor, studying under legendary New York teacher Sanford Meisner. He cut his teeth is television, appearing in such shows as “The Twilight Zone,” “Playhouse 90” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” before transitioning into directing for the small screen. Even after making a name for himself behind the camera, he kept popping up onscreen, starring in “The Player” (1992), “Husbands and Wives” (1992), “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999), “Changing Lanes” (2002), “Michael Clayton” (2007) and his own “Tootsie” (1982), to name but a few.
It was this experience as a performer that made him a favorite with actors, including Robert Redford, with whom he made seven films.

The late Stanley Kubrick was one of the greatest legendary directors of all time, having gifted to the cinema the likes of critically acclaimed pieces like 1968’s sci-fi/adventure 2001: A Space Odyssey and 1980’s horror-mystery The Shining. Being so experienced in his respective field, the filmmaker was also an incredibly paranoid human being when it came to his works.

This was especially displayed while he was partly working with Hollywood veteran mastermind Steven Spielberg, on his last film which was completed by Spielberg after his death. This was the sci-fi/fantasy A.I. Artificial Intelligence from 2001, and Kubrick appeared to be quite anxious after entrusting Spielberg with the task of directing the film.

Hollywood has been renowned for figures like Stanley Kubrick whose extreme, almost cruel, attitude invaded movie sets, affecting crews and actors to the point of torture. Unconfirmed stories about the infamous director’s alleged abuse have littered the society papers and historical records from his time and disgruntled stars have lived to tell the tale via op-eds and interviews through the decades.
Stanley Kubrick [Photo: Phillip A. Harrington, Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, 1949]However, the most popular piece of pop-culture myth about Stanley Kubrick revolves around his supposed obsessive-compulsive need for endless takes of a single scene until he obtained the desired result. As rumor would have it, these takes often racketed up to a number as high as 127.
While the psychological after-effects of such incidents would go on to shape the lives of the director and his actors, one thing was for sure: Stanley Kubrick was no perfectionist but he was certifiably a genius with a method behind his madness.

If the Star Wars franchise is considered one of the greatest film series of all time in Hollywood, the credit goes to its creative mastermind George Lucas. The visionary director pioneered a sci-fi revolution with the epic space saga that spanned multiple decades to become a cult classic that will continue to remain evergreen for years to come.

In honor of her receiving this year’s AFI Life Achievement Award, Nicole Kidman is being celebrated with a career retrospective at Nashville’s non-profit film center, The Belcourt, starting next week. Having undergone extensive renovations and preservations in 2016, The Belcourt is now one of Nashville’s most beloved homes for the arts, attracting audiences from all over Tennessee and the Southeast region, as well as visitors from across the country and globe. The theater programs over 300 films a year across 4,500 screenings, some of which feature Q&As with filmmakers and scholars.

Few actresses of her era take as many chances as Nicole Kidman. The Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning actress has been one of the industry’s most sought-after performers since the early 1990s, and appeared in everything from splashy musicals like “Moulin Rouge!” (which netted Kidman her first of five Academy Award nominations) to historical fiction like “The Hours” (which won Kidman the Best Actress Oscar for playing Virginia Woolfe) to psychological thrillers like “Eyes Wide Shut” (where she starred opposite her now-ex-husband Tom Cruise) to blockbuster superhero movies like “Aquaman.”
And that’s just on the big screen. In recent years, Kidman has acquitted herself exceedingly well in a spate of prestige television series, winning an Emmy for her nuanced work in “Big Little Lies” and scoring a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “The Undoing.”
But her biggest challenge yet was arguably her turn as Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin...

Netflix’s popularity can be attributed to many different movies and shows, but, in my opinion, their horror anthology series Black Mirror was integral to their overnight success because I can remember obsessing over its brutal satire like it was yesterday. Then, the streaming platform’s Indian branch made Lust Stories, and the idea of provocative storytelling featuring Bollywood stars felt promising. Love, Death, and Robots became everyone’s favorite almost instantly, with its vivid style and precise storytelling. And then things sort of went downhill with absolutely trashy products like Ghost Stories, Ludo, Paava Kadhaigal, Pitta Kathalu, Ankahi Kahaniya, Ajeeb Dastans, Feels Like Ishq, Ray, and Lust Stories 2. The only diamond in the rough was Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. And it seems like Netflix has learned the right lesson from it and has brought another anthology series inspired by the works of an acclaimed director: Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams.

Back in 1990, soon after his divorce from Mimi Rogers, fans found the perfect ship as the next best power couple in Hollywood: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. A pair like one made in heaven, these two lovebirds were seen together almost everywhere and fans couldn’t help but swoon looking at them being so in love with each other.
But then something went wrong, and this ship crashed.

While that came as a devastating blow to his fans, friends, and family, it seems that Cruise was even more heartbroken by how the course of events had turned out for him and his now ex-wife back in the day.
In fact, if anything, the heart-rending way he responded to questions about their split during interviews perfectly sums up the love and utter respect he had for Kidman in his heart.

Tom Cruise didn’t just jump up and down on a couch as an overeager romantic. The otherwise calm and composed Cruise often blurted out his love for his partner on public platforms in the 2000s. The actor might be single now, but there was a time when he was associated with some of the top actresses. After his divorce from Nicole Kidman, Cruise was involved in a romantic relationship with Penélope Cruz.

Though many thought Nicole Kidman should have been welcomed into the Academy's good graces with 1995's To Die For, it would take six years until that early promise materialized in the actress' first Oscar nomination. Curiously, the path to such success went through a return to down under cinema that started to take shape with The Portrait of a Lady by kiwi auteur Jane Campion. This was also when Kidman began to challenge herself conspicuously by collaborating with true visionaries, picking projects based on who was behind the camera. That line of thinking took the actress into the dark reveries of Kubrick's swan song and, ultimately, the musical riot of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge!, which started shooting shortly after Eyes Wide Shut hit theaters.

‘If you see one movie this summer, see Star Wars. If you see a second, see Austin Powers.’ Thus spake trailer-man, in the teaser for Mike Myers’s upcoming comedy sequel, and to a great extent, that’s exactly what happened in the summer of 1999. Well, almost.
The 20th century was running out of time and that summer was impatiently filled with as many tantalising prospects as any big movie season in recent memory. It appeared to be the summer of comebacks. Following Terrence Malick’s long-awaited return to directing in the recently-released The Thin Red Line, Summer ’99 would see not only George Lucas but Stanley Kubrick making their much-delayed encores – though we knew by then that this was actually Kubrick’s swan song.

This one is for the true Lanthimites, the Dogtooth sisters, the biscuit women, The Killing of a Sacred Deer heads, a film to which the callbacks are so abundant that one can’t help but wonder what the connection is for writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos and co-screenwriter Efthimis Filippou behind the scenes, outside of simply sharing tones and themes that all of their other films share. Regardless, the director as we knew him pre-Emma Stone is back (relatively speaking). And this time… with Emma Stone!
